Paperweights are decorative objects, designed to hold sheets of paper on a surface to prevent wind from blowing them away. Paperweights are commonly made from glass, although may also be made from clear acrylic or other materials. They are often collected as examples of fine workmanship, and appreciated for their aesthetic as opposed to their utilitarian aspect. They are often exhibited in art museums as examples of fine glass art. They generally have a flat base and a domed top, which may be faceted or etched. The weight may be coated with one or more thin layers of colored glass, and have windows cut through it to reveal the interior motif. The ground on which the inner parts rest may be clear or colored, made of unfused sand, or resemble lace (latticinio). Antique paperweights were made primarily in three French factories, between 1845 and 1860, in Baccarat, St. Louis, and Clichy. Weights (mainly of lesser quality) were also made in the United States, Great Britain, and elsewhere, though Bacchus (UK) and New England Glass Company (USA) produced some that equaled the best of the French. Modern weights have been made from about 1950 to the present. There are approximately 20,000 paperweight collectors worldwide.
Collectors may specialize in one of several types of paperweights. Millefiori paperweights contain thin cross-sections of cylindrical composite canes made from colored rods and usually resemble little flowers, although they can be designed after anything. These are usually made in a factory setting. The exist in many variations such as scattered, patterned, close concentric or carpet ground. Lampwork paperweights have objects such as flowers, fruit, butterflies or animals constructed by shaping and working bits of colored glass with a gas burner or torch and assembling them into attractive compositions, which are then incorporated into the dome. This is a form particularly favored by studio artists. Sulfide paperweights have an encased three-dimensional medallion or portrait plaque made from a ceramic. They often are produced to commemorate some person or event. Swirl paperweights have opaque rods of two or three colors radiating like a pinwheel from a central millefiori floret.
California-style paperweights are made by "painting" the surface of the dome with colored molten glass, and manipulated with picks or other tools. They may also be sprayed while hot with various metallic salts to achieve an iridescent look. Victorian portrait and advertising paperweights were dome glass paperweights first made in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania using a process patented in 1882 by William H. Maxwell. The portrait paperweights contained pictures of ordinary people reproduced on a milk-glass disk and encased within clear glass. This same process was also used to produce paperweights with the owner's name encased or an advertisement of a business or product. Pittsburgher Albert A. Graeser, patented a different process for making advertising paperweights in 1892. The Graeser process involved sealing an image to the underside of a rectangular glass blank using a milkglass or enamellike glaze. Many paperweights of the late 1800s are marked either J. N. Abrams or Barnes and Abrams and may list either the 1882 Maxwell or 1892 Graeser patent date. It has been theorized that Barnes and Abrams did not actually manufacture advertising paperweights for their customers, but instead subcontracted the actual manufacturing task out to Pittsburgh area glasshouses. The PCA's Annual Bulletins published for 2000, 2001 and 2002 describe these in detail. Workmanship, design, rarity, and condition determine the value of a paperweight. They range in price from a few dollars, to a record $258,500 once paid for an antique French weight. Antique weights, of which perhaps 10,000 or so survive (mostly in museums), generally appreciate steadily in value. Visible flaws, such as bubbles, striations and scratches affect the value. Glass should not have a yellow or greenish cast, and there should be no unintentional asymmetries, or unevenly spaced or broken elements. In a modern piece, an identifying mark and date are imperative.
Paperweights are made by sole artisans, and in factories where many artists and technicians collaborate. Both may produce inexpensive as well as "collector" weights. A number of small studios appeared in the late 20th century, particularly in the US. These may have several to some dozens of workers with various levels of skill cooperating to produce their own distinctive "line". Notable examples are Lundberg Studios, Orient and Flume, Correia Art Glass, Lotton, and Parabelle Glass. In the U. S., Charles Kaziun started in 1940 to produce buttons, paperweights, inkwells and other bottles, using lamp-work of elegant simplicity. In Scotland, the pioneering work of Paul Ysart from the 1930s onward preceded a new generation of artists such as William Manson, Peter McDougall, Peter Holmes and John Deacons. In the late 1960s and 1970s, artists such as Paul Stankard, his former assistant, Jim D'Onofrio, Chris Buzzini, Delmo and daughter Debbie Tarsitano, Victor Trabucco and sons, Gordon Smith, Rick Ayotte and his daughter Melissa, and the father and son team of Bob and Ray Banford, began breaking new ground. The work of Paul Stankard was particularly noted for its incredibly realistic portrayal of flowers, including their roots. He has more recently moved away from the classical domed paperweight to rectangular forms, which are among the finest glass objects produced in the twentieth century.

Glass paperweights by Bob Banford and Ray Banford, makers of glass paperweights, art glass, crystal, studio glass and contemporary art glass, featuring lampwork, lampworking, flamework, flameworking, hot glass, glass blowing, and glass sculpture.
From the rich glass heritage of South Jersey come the paperweights of Ray and Bob Banford, a father and son who started their glass journey in the early 1970s. Ray was interested in collecting, buying and selling art glass, while Bob was interested in the art of glass blowing. Ray bought Bob a torch for a graduation present and it started their journey into the art. After years of trial and error study they produced their first saleable paperweights in 1973. Paperweights from the antique classic period of the 1840s were their inspiration. They were the culmination of the finest skills and products from the factories at that time. The clearest of crystal, most intense colors, and the skills of the best glassblowers were incorporated into the making of paperweights. The most talented glass cutters finished the pieces. The Banfords have continued this practice today. By searching for the best colors, using only the finest of optically clear crystal glass, they have honed their art to a point where pieces by the Banfords grace many private and public collections. Their paperweights are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute, Corning Museum of Glass, Chicago Art Institute, Musuem of American Glass at Wheaton Village, Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, and many others. Although Ray is semi-retired, they both continue to further their skills, adding new techniques to their work and expanding their ability to produce the finest paperweights. Their work is individually signed internally with their own distinctive initial canes. Rays signature cane is a black "B" in a white field. Bobs cane is a red "B" in a white field with a cobalt blue rim. Most pieces are one of a kind, further enhancing their collectability. glass paperweights, art glass, Banford, Bob, Robert, Ray, art, glass, crystal, studio glass, lampwork, lampworking, lamp work, lampworked, flamework, flameworking, flameworked, hot glass, glass blowing, glass sculpture, contemporary art glass, antique glass, Clichy, Baccarat, Murano, St. Louis, Saint Louis, Perthshire, Ysart, millefiori, Debbie Tarsitano, Caithness, L. Paperweights evolved from the functional to the beautiful during the early part of the industrial revolution. As the economic engines of commerce began to generate bills, letters, and other business paper something had to be provided to hold them down during the breezes that were common when offices had windows and air was allowed to waft through the workplace. Early paperweights were simple, functional items of metal or glass. By the 1840s, a whole industry emerged in France that would transform the simple paperweight into a glorious work of art for every desktop. The French glass factories of the 1840s stood on the shoulders of the Italian glass workers of Murano (Venice) who continued the artistic traditions of ancient Rome. While the Italians utilized and retained many of the ancient processes, the French were the first to capitalize on the optical characteristics of glass. They enclosed their decorations motifs within glass spheres and made the magnification part of the total effect. Their paperweights of the late 1840s stand as the artistic pinnacle of the classic period. The Crystal Palace Exhibition in London in 1851 showcased the French and German/Bohemian paperweights and they were subsequently emulated and 'improved' by the glass houses in the United Kingdom and slightly later in the United States.
The Classic period starts in the 1840s and runs through the 1880s and was centered in France (Clichy, St Louis, Baccarat, and Pantin), England (Walsh-Walsh, Bacchus, and others), and then America (Boston Sandwich, New England Glass Company, and Pairpoint). The Folk Art and Advertising period began in the 1880s and continued into World War II. Some of the most original American contributions to paperweights were made in Millville New Jersey, including the crimp rose and the frit weights (decoration made with powdered glass). This period saw the decline of the major glass factories (as mechanization changed how glass was made) but saw the advent of small, family-run glass factories that continued paperweight making. The Contemporary period started after World War II when Charles Kaziun almost single-handedly reinvented the processes and mechanisms used to create the classic paperweights and introduced the studio glass artist - an artist effectively works alone in a studio to create glass paperweights and other glass objects using the techniques first popularized by the classic period.
Collecting paperweights began almost as soon as they began to appear on the market. There are many ways to collect and to enjoy the beauty of antique or modern glass paperweights. Four general approaches include.
Probably the most common collecting style is the type collecting where the collector accumulates one good example of each major type of paperweight style (millefiori, lamp-work, sulphide, etc) from one or more of the glass factories. This collecting style provides a broad spectrum of weights in a single collection. The theme collector tends to collect paperweights that have a unifying theme or common thread. For example, a theme collector may collect paperweights that contain birds or specific flowers. There are some interesting collections that only contain paperweights that are purple or sulphides of politicians. The in-depth collector likes to specialize on one type of paperweight and often have the definitive collection of a specific type of paperweight. The depth and breadth of this collection style makes it easy to study the variation in manufacturing techniques and can be useful in identifying mystery weights that occasionally appear in the hobby. Probably the most fun collecting style (and the style most people use when they start collecting) is I like it so I have it. This style is perfectly acceptable and a lot of fun - although going to the other collecting styles eventually makes keeping track of what you already have a little simpler and makes your collecting universe a bit easier to manage. As important as the books on paperweights (and they have been being issued in rapid succession in the past few years as more and more people start collecting) is the paperweight collecting community, which is best represented by the Paperweight Collectors Associations, Inc. and the website. www. paperweight. org (which you are viewing). This organization publishes quarterly newsletters, annual bulletins containing a wealth of paperweight information, and sponsors a major gathering of collectors, dealers, and contemporary paperweight artists every other year.
The Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA, Inc.), a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1953 and has members throughout the world. The PCA, Inc. became a 501(c)(7) organization in 1988, a 501(c)(3) organization in 1996, and was incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania in 1995. The PCA, Inc. is a mutual organization for the benefit of its members. It does not discriminate against applicants or employees on the basis of age, race, sex, sexual orientation, color, religion, national origin, size, disability, socioeconomic background, or any other status protected by state or local law."

Paperweights. The Collector's Guide to Identifying, Selecting, and Enjoying New and Vintage Paperweights (Collectors Guide Series) (Paperback)
From Booklist The fascination with glass-art-within-glass, as collector Reilly points out, is a relatively recent phenomenon--at least compared with other antiques. From its beginning in Poland in the 1830s, the craft of millefiori paperweights spread and took on colorful variations in such well-known French factories as Baccarat, Clichy, and St. Louis. Reilly prepares novices for their first collecting foray, explaining types as well as care and display. Color photographs bolster the text that sometimes drags. Those first venturing into this antique wonderland, compelled to do so by the publicity given to such collectors as the late Arthur Rubloff and such collections as that of the Corning Museum of Glass, will find it an interesting though expensive hobby. Barbara Jacobs
This is a nice book for the collector, particularly one who is fairly new to the hobby. It covers most of the more popular makers of the 19th and 20th century. Paperweights have been on the go for a relatively short space of time, about 150 years give or take a year and initially started out to serve the purpose for which they were originally designed, a weight to hold down paper on a desk. A useful implement in the days of pen and paper. Very soon after they started being produced they became more and more complex and attractive with each factory striving to outdo their rivals. There are few people who fail to be fascinated by a good paperweight, particularly the Millefiori type which comprise of small canes of glass of varying shapes and colours, sealed into what initially was a molten lump of glass. The various forms of weights, millefiori as we have just mentioned, Sulphides, Lampwork and Dumps (the large green domes of glass that were often used as doorstops in their larger sizes), are all mentioned. Plus information on how to start collecting and differentiating between the different makers, not always easy, even for the expert. One part of the book that did appeal to me in particular were the pages that showed the different cane designs for the different makers. This is an excellent aid to identifying paperweights that you are unsure of and I have used this method more than once myself.
A very nice introduction to paperweights ~ good photography as well as interesting information on the history and types of weights.

The book is not as comprehensive as the title suggests, virtually leaving out the Scottish factories apart from one or two cursory comments. This may seem remiss of the author, especially for those of us who cannot afford the early French weights of Baccarat, Clichy and St. Louis, most of which are snapped up by the American market, where the hobby is thriving. Many of the workers from these French factories migrated to America Whether the author has missed the Scottish factories intentionally or by error is hard to say, but we should remember that Strathearn, Perthshire and Caithness are relatively new kids on the block and two of those, Strathearn and Perthshire existed for a relatively short space of time. They have been superseded by ex-craftsmen from those factories, i. e. John Deacons and Peter McDougall, to name but two, who are making excellent weights at for the moment, reasonable prices and will have their place in paperweight history, perhaps with their weights commanding the same high prices that the French factories do now, but by and large the Scottish factories play a small part in paperweight history. Returning to the book itself, what is between the covers, particularly the photographs is nothing short of superb. Photographs of weights from the mid-eighteen hundreds, from the French factories, which coincidentally only made paperweights for a relatively short space of time. These weights are a joy to behold and particularly with the millefiore (thousand flowers) something different can be seen each time you look at the weight. If you cannot afford the many hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds that these paperweights now command, a good colour photograph is surely the next best thing. The many differing forms of paperweight are shown in the book. Millefiore as mentioned. Lampwork and to a lesser degree Sulphides, a type of weight that showed enclosed within the weight, the portrait of a famous person of the day, comprised of a white material, looking a little like china clay. These weights are not usually as popular with the collector as the other types. If you are a collector or have an interest in paperweights, you will want to own this book.

Im a paperweight girl. ok, my house isnt covered in them, but if i had more counterspace, it would be. i love the way they let you play around with color and pattern, injecting a little pop of liveliness into any room. i use them to hold down napkins, mail, recipe pages, stacks of magazines and well, paper. im pretty partial to iomois paperweights because of the incredible array of trend-conscious patterns they offer but i thought it would be fun to do a roundup of my favorite paperweights on the market (with plenty of options for every price range). just click more to view the full selection of 30 paperweights. This is a great feature (although I am sad that none of the p-weights we carry were featured). I think the first grouping is my favourite. Those colorblocks are a biiiig splurge but they are just beautiful. The iomoi paperweights are always fab!
The dove script paperweight is nice, but I cant see paying $95 for something that completely lifted from the book Hills Manual of Social Business Forms. Maybe if it were original.

Glass paperweights became fashionable in the 1840s and 50s, even winning top honors at the Great Exhibition in London before falling out of vogue in the 1870s. Major makers like Baccarat, Saint Louis, and Pantin used various techniques to create vibrant and intricate internal designs. 1) The sulphide technique for small figural items or images. 2) the millefiori method for blobs, knots, swirls and flowers. and 3) the lampwork method for 3D images inside the glass.

Create a festive floral paperweight. It's similar to brightly colored glass produced in Murano, Italy.
1. Murano, Italy, is a world leader in the production of beautiful glass. Among those objects are the colorful millefiori (thousands of flowers) paperweights, which have their beginnings in Renaissance times. Millefiori paperweights are assemblages of thousands of small slices of floral "canes" of multicolored glass. These canes are long rods, cut into small, colorful pieces. 2. To create your own version of a millefiori paperweight, use Crayola® Metallic Colored Pencils to create many small floral circles on dark paper. Make each flower different, using different background colors and patterns to create a beautiful collection of tiny flowers. Draw circles around your flowers, and cut out each one with Crayola Scissors. Set your flowers aside. 3. Find a rock or another heavy object that will fit inside a small paper bowl. Place it in the bowl. Cut a circle of construction paper that fits over the rim of your bowl. Use Crayola School Glue to attach the construction-paper cover to the bowl. Dry. Turn the bowl over, so the flat cover which holds in the rock is on the surface of the table. 4. Glue your floral circles to the outside surface of the bowl to complete your millefiori paperweight. Overlap circles slightly to cover the entire bowl. Dry.

Paperweights are heavy and often decorative objects, designed to hold sheets of paper on a surface to prevent wind from blowing the paper away. Before the advent of air conditioning, offices had to keep their windows open in the summertime and use fans to cool off buildings. Thus, paperweights were necessary to keep papers on desks. Nowadays, paperweights are mostly used as decorations. Paperweights are commonly made from glass, although may also be made from clear acrylic or other materials. They are often collected as examples of fine workmanship, and appreciated for their aesthetic as opposed to their utilitarian aspect. They generally have a flat base and a domed top, which may be faceted or etched.
The diversity and beauty of glass paperweights offers great scope and this invaluable guide provides a comprehensive and enjoyable introduction to the subject. The development of paperweights is traced from the mid-1900s to the present day, featuring the major factories of France, Scotland and the United States. Popular makers are illustrated, with their trademarks identified.
