Digital photo frames were one of the best-selling consumer electronics products this holiday season, but some of them carried a nasty surprise -- malicious software code that tried to hop onto personal computers when the frames were plugged in. These popular devices are now so powerful that they've become computers in themselves, although people who buy them don't always realize that. And like computers, the frames are capable of carrying code that logs keystrokes, steals data and calls out to other malicious code once it's installed itself on a PC. No one knows how many digital photo frames were infected. But the Consumer Electronics Association estimated that 7.4 million such frames were sold in 2008 -- up 41 percent from 2007 -- and projected that sales would jump again this year by 33 percent to more than 9.8 million frames.
Among the frames reported to be infected were a Samsung 8-inch frame sold by Amazon. com, an Element 9-inch frame sold by Circuit City and a Mercury 1.5-inch frame sold by Wal-Mart. Amazon. com has e-mailed warnings to customers about the Samsung frame, but a Circuit City spokesman said the retailer wasn't aware of any infections. A Wal-Mart spokeswoman said the company would remove the Mercury frames from its Web site. American consumers shopped hard for bargains this year, and digital photo frames have been good deals. Wholesale prices continue to drop. Wal-Mart has been selling the Mercury frame, which comes embedded in a key chain, for $24. But the infected frames also show how risky it is to live with a global supply chain where the cost of buying products at the lowest price means those products can vary widely in quality. The Mercury photo frames sold by Wal-Mart, for example, were manufactured by Kobian, a company with headquarters in Singapore, factories in India and dedicated subcontract facilities in China, according to the company's Web site. No offices were listed in the United States. Kobian could not be reached for comment. It's other devices, tooThis year's crop of malicious code varied in its potential destructiveness but some of what reportedly was found on the frames was old code that was easily detected by antivirus software. It all spreads by taking advantage of a feature in Microsoft Windows called Autorun that makes digital frames and other electronic devices run automatically when they're plugged into a PC. Microsoft turns on Autorun by default to make these devices easier to use, although security experts routinely tweak Windows so that Autorun is turned off. Microsoft, however, advises against this. Turning off Autorun is not a simple step, said Ziv Mador, a senior program manager at Microsoft's malware protection center, and PC users who try it are likely to wind up confused."They're used to entering a CD (or plugging in a frame) and it loads automatically, and that will not work anymore," he said. "The important thing is to have up-to-date antivirus software and keep it turned on. That will mitigate much of the risk."Paul Ferguson, a security researcher at Trend Micro in Cupertino, Calif., said not all infections are caused by digital photo frames. Memory sticks, digital cameras, thumb drives and other devices that run by connecting to PC can all carry viruses. In November, the Department of Defense banned the use of all removable storage devices in order to halt the spread of a worm on their networks, according to reports. In May, infected memory sticks were accidentally handed out at a computer security conference run by Australia's national Computer Emergency Response Team."It was very embarrassing, but this stuff always needs to be suspect," Ferguson said.

Last Christmas Santa Claus brought me a digital photo frame. It was one of the models that displays photos from an SD card that you slot into the base of the frame. I had a spare SD card lying around so I put it into my PC and transferred some photos over from a recent holiday and then put the frame on a bookshelf. 12 months later and the frame still has the same photos repeating on an endless loop. sure I could pull out the SD card and put some new photos on there but it would be MUCH easier if I could just log into a web service and tell the frame to pull photos from my Flickr account, Windows Live Photo Gallery and Live Mesh,.. maybe even display the latest weather or news headlines? @lijiansnd you're correct - the ability to pull photos from Flickr or get weather information are not necessarily new features for a digital photo frame but what makes FrameIt unique is that it's a web based service that integrates with lots of different photos storage sites like Flickr, SmugMug, Live Spaces, Live Mesh etc. not to mention information sources for news, weather etc. The service is constantly being updated meaning that the features of your digital photo frame (should) get better over time! Also the frame in the video above has built in internet connectivity so you don't have to keep it plugged into your computers USB port, and your computer turned on, like the Guitar Boy 2.4" frame needs. The price difference is significant though.

If you've been getting tired of the steady stream of ho-hum digital photo frames hitting the market lately, maybe the DP-1001DW is your density. er, destiny. The new pic-viewer from Japanese maker byd.sign has one notable feature that really sets it apart from the unruly riff-raff of the digiframe world. a 1Seg tuner. While you get a 10.2-inch, 800 x 480 display, a contrast ratio of 300.1, support for MPEG, XviD, and MP3 files, as well as a totally attractive choice of a white or black bezel, you also have the totally orginal option of. watching TV. So, really, it's more like a 10.2-inch television. That only works in Asia. In all fairness, it does appear to sport an alarm clock as well. No word on price or release date, but we don't plan to budge until this is nestled tightly in a corner of our home. being viewed by a tiny human or small animal.

Once a lot of people have these in their living rooms, there are plenty of opportunities to drive additional services. The frame is running Flash on Linux, so it is also a fully functional PC. Digital photo frames were one of the best-selling consumer electronics products this holiday season, but some of them carried a nasty surprise -- malicious software code that tried to hop onto personal computers when the frames were plugged in. These popular devices are now so powerful that they've become computers in themselves, although people who buy them don't always realize that. And like computers, the frames are capable of carrying code that logs keystrokes, steals data and calls out to other malicious code once it's installed itself on a PC. No one knows how many digital photo frames were infected. But the Consumer Electronics Association estimated that 7.4 million such frames were sold in 2008 -- up 41 percent from 2007 -- and projected that sales would jump again this year by 33 percent to more than 9.8 million frames.
Among the frames reported to be infected were a Samsung 8-inch frame sold by Amazon. com, an Element 9-inch frame sold by Circuit City and a Mercury 1.5-inch frame sold by Wal-Mart. Amazon. com has e-mailed warnings to customers about the Samsung frame, but a Circuit City spokesman said the retailer wasn't aware of any infections. A Wal-Mart spokeswoman said the company would remove the Mercury frames from its Web site. American consumers shopped hard for bargains this year, and digital photo frames have been good deals. Wholesale prices continue to drop. Wal-Mart has been selling the Mercury frame, which comes embedded in a key chain, for $24. Think of it as a social photo site with an associated digital photo frame. Once you set up an account you can set options that let others view and/or add photos as well. Photos can be viewed on the site, on the desktop via Windows or Mac software, embedded into other sites (Ive embedded a few sample images below) and there is also a Chumby widget option. But the big use is to have them sent wirelessly to the photo frame that they are also selling. Heres the downside. The photo frames are $249, which compares badly to competing products that are in the $100-$200 range. The screen is 7 inches, which is on the small side. And for now you cant even get them. Orders now will be fulfilled in 6-8 weeks, as the team builds the first batch by hand. On the upside, the team is focusing on the software, particularly the social opportunities that have largely been ignored in the digital photo frame market until now. Once a lot of people have these in their living rooms, there are plenty of opportunities to drive additional services. The frame is running Flash on Linux, so it is also a fully functional PC. Parrot is back at it again, working up a digital picture frame thats as much about design as it is about function. But dont let the artistic design fool you, the Parrot Speechio is full-featured and has included more ways to transfer files to the frame than weve seen from any other. The Speechio features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC - Near Field Communication, mini-USB port and an SD card reader. The Internet connectivity via Wi-Fi connection and included email functionality, the Specchio can automatically receive and display pictures that are sent by an owners friends or family, as well as those that are uploaded onto photo sharing sites such as Picasa, Flickr and Fotolog. Photos can also be transferred to the frame via Bluetooth mobile phone or supported device. But the really interesting feature is transferring photos via Near Field Communication. Sliding an NFC mobile phone against the back of the Parrot Specchio frame will enable photographs to be immediately transferred and displayed on the screen of the digital photo frame without the need for pairing the products. This NFC technology has been used in trials with public transportation systems and other rapid payment situations, but even with support from Nokia, the platform hasnt yet taken off. Parrot integrating such a feature into a digital frame is certainly forward thinking as very few consumer electronics have gone this route to date. From a design perspective, the frame looks like a metallic mirror when turned off. Only when its turned on, do you even realize its a digital photo frame. The 13-inch HD frame is being launched alongside a 10-inch crystal imaging" photo frame, both promising high quality digital playback of both still photos and video. This means home movies, or even films downloaded to a memory card, can be played through the frame, along with your favourite MP3 tracks as well. With only 256MB internal memory, the frames are certainly lacking in this department compared to some of their competitors, but a memory card reader is of course included to help you expand this. Each frame boasts an ultra-slim design at just 2.2cm thick, interchangeable coloured frames and a remote control. There is also calendar and alarm clock functionality as well.
