The Gift is a short book by the French sociologist Marcel Mauss and is best known for being one of the earliest and most important studies of reciprocity and gift exchange. Mauss's original piece was entitled Essai sur le don. Forme et raison de l'échange dans les sociétés archaïques ("An essay on the gift. the form and reason of exchange in archaic societies") and was originally published in the Année Sociologique in us. The essay was later republished in book form in English in two translations. The first, by Ian Cunnison, appeared in 1954. The second, by W. D. Halls, appeared in 1990.
Mauss's essay focuses on the way that the exchange of objects between groups builds relationships between them. He argued that giving an object creates an inherent obligation on the receiver to reciprocate the gift. The resulting series of exchanges between groups thus provided one of the earliest forms of social solidarity used by humans. The essay drew on a wide range of ethnographic examples. Mauss drew on Bronisław Malinowski's study of kula exchange, the institution of the potlatch, and Polynesian ethnography to demonstrate how widespread practices of gift giving were in non-European societies. In later sections of the book he examined Indian history and suggested that traces of gift exchange could be found in more 'developed' societies as well. In the conclusion of the book he suggested that industrialized, secular societies such as his own could benefit from recognizing this dynamic of gift giving.
The Gift has been very influential in anthropology, where there is a large field of study devoted to reciprocity and exchange. It has also influenced philosophers, artists and political activists, including Georges Bataille and Jacques Derrida, and - following it's use in The Cathedral and the Bazaar - research into the phenomenon of Open source software. Many today see Mauss's work as a guide to how giving can promote a better way of living. The gift-giving and exchange practices Mauss described were often self-interested, but at the same time has a concern for others. the main point of the traditional gift is that it furthers both of these human aspects at the same time.
Gift books, or literary annuals, were primarily published in the autumn, in time for the holiday season and were intended to be given away rather than read by the purchaser
Gift books first appeared in England. The Forget Me Not, subtitled a Christmas and New Year’s Present for 1823, was published in November, 1822 and was believed to be the first example. It was decoratively bound and came in a slipcase. It was successful, and by 1832 there were sixty-three different annual gift books being published in England. In 1826, The Atlantic Souvenir was the first American annual published.
Many of the most popular and well-known gift books were edited by women, including Sarah Josepha Hale, Maria Weston Chapman, Lydia Maria Child, Alice and Phoebe Cary, and Lydia Sigourney.
The annual The Token, which began in 1828 and lasted fifteen years, was edited by Samuel Griswold Goodrich. Because of the prevalence and popularity of gift books, he referred to the time period as the "Age of Annuals".
A notable feature of gift books were their decorative aspect. They featured increasingly lavish bindings, ranging from glazed paper to embossed silk or embossed and inlaid leather with mother of pearl. Their size increased over time as well as their interior decoration. Pages often featured flowery borders, and the books were copiously illustrated with engravings or colored plates. A inscription plate was often included for the gift giver to inscribe to the recipient.
The material included was usually original but sometimes in the cheaper volumes may have been reprinted. Usually the books included the year in the title but in some cases, this was omitted, and the publisher would sell the volume's remainders the next year. In some cases an old annual would be reprinted with a new name, or with just the lead article and some illustration plates changed, or even renamed using a more popular name from a rival publisher. These practices sometimes make it difficult to construct correct bibliographies, and may have been one reason why "the whole tribe of annuals fell into something of disrepute".
Some of the more important annuals of the time were the Opal, Talisman, the Magnolia, the Gift, the Liberty Bell (an abolitionist work) and the Token. The era of the gift book did not outlast the 19th century. most were no longer being published by the late 1800s.

Hafiz has long been one of my favorite poets. I first discovered him when I was in college via Goethe and Ralph Waldo Emerson, and I've been readng his poems ever since. Since I am (alas!) without Parsi, I'm unable to read Hafiz in the original, and must rely upon the kindness of translators. Daniel Ladinsky has done an interesting job of rendering Hafiz's verse into English. Ladinsky has an ear for rhythm and he strikes me as an individual with deep spiritual sensibilities. When he renders one of Hafiz's couplets as The body a tree./God a wind, one senses that there's more going into this translation than just philological expertise. Landinsky, like Hafiz, is a mystic. That spiritual bond with Hafiz, as well as a shared joy in the sheer vitality of creation, makes Landinsky's renderings light-hearted, in the sense that they shimmer with what Hafiz would call God's Light. Some of my favorite examples. Whenever/God lays His glance/Life starts/Clapping. What is the beginning of/Happiness?/It is to stop being/So religious. All the talents of God are within you./How could this be otherwise/When your soul/Derived from His/Genes! But while I can appreciate the lyrical way in which Ladinsky trys to express Hafiz's insights, I do wonder about the reliability of the translations. They're loaded with modernisms that are somewhat grating after a while. we're derived from God's genes, the sun is in drag, characters in the poems dig potatoes, the soul visits a summer camp. Moreover, many of the renderings make Hafiz sound suspiciously like a Zen master throwing out koans (an obvious example of this is the poem Ladinsky titles Two Giant Fat People.) To his credit, Landinsky freely admits in his translator's preface that he's taken the liberty to play a few of [Hafiz's] lines through a late-night jazz sax instead of from a morning temple drum or lyre. But he's unapologetic, claiming that the translator's job is to help Hafiz's spirit come across to the Parsi-less reader, and that this demands a free rendering. I'm not so sure. This attitude strikes me as rather patronizing to the reader and disloyal to Hafiz himself. So my bottom line is this. Ladinsky's book is a good read on both poetical and spiritual grounds. But I'm forever left in doubt as to whether I'm reading Ladinsky or Hafiz.
Living in Iran years ago, I first encountered the poet Hafiz as a beloved Iranian folk figure. I have read with pleasure and an open heart many versions of his poems, both in Persian (Farsi) and in English. It was with high expectations because of reviews that I bought this book, only to find Mr. Ladinsky's poems literally unrelated to the original Hafiz. Instead, based on his own explanation, they appear to be simply a product of his imagination. The author has no background in Iranian culture and speaks no Persian. Instead, he obviously uses the commercially successful style of Coleman Barks (of Rumi notoriety) by reading someone else's word-for-word translation and then creating new verses, the intent being to capture the spirit of the original. But these verses are so distant from Hafiz that one wonders how they qualify even as renderings, an amorphous term for Mr. Barks' practice that allows the bypassing of usual literary standards. Rendering is much less demanding intellectually than translating as well as an easier way of becoming published, and it contains a built-in literary defense mechanism (the plea of subjectivity) against criticism for poor scholarship or inauthenticity. Rendering is not new. Before the Iranian Revolution, one task of Iranian academia was the separation of authentic work of Hafiz from a mass of imitation poetry falsely attributed to him. Now comes this work that bears substantially more resemblance to the tone of Mr. Barks, its apparent stylistic model, than to Hafiz. Even giving the author the benefit of the doubt for sincere devotion and industry, this book and his other two similar works best fit into the category of spiritual opportunism. This phrase, spiritual opportunism, appeared recently in a national article about several authors (Andrews, Rampa, Morgan, et al.) who have written about mystical customs (Native American, Tibetan and Australian Aboriginal) in such a way that they now are accused of appropriating other cultures' spiritual traditions, either through ignorance or for the purpose of personal gain. Mr. Ladinsky's work seems to take appropriation even further than the others. Not only does it superficially represent a spiritual tradition of a subjected foreign culture, it actually offers self-created verse as representative of a specific poet. Even though Iranians lack a voice to make their great poets known in an authentic manner within the current culture of pop spirituality, no amount of commercial success can disguise the truth that this book is a misrepresentation of the poetry of Hafiz and that it does a grave disservice to Iranian poetry and spiritual traditions.

In The Gift, best-selling author Richard Paul Evans (The Christmas Box, The Locket) spins an engrossing tale about lonely store detective Nathan Hurst, who befriends Addison, a pretty, divorced mother with some serious baggage. Her 9-year-old son, Collin, moves closer to death when he exercises his extraordinary power to heal the sick. Every time Evans appears to take a predictable turn in the story (Nathan falls hard for Addison. her ex is an opportunistic cad), he sucker punches your emotions with some tender moments between Collin and his mom. Ron Davis shows how the learning disability of dyslexia is caused by the successful use of visual thinking skills at an early age. This gift works well for recognizing real life objects, but not printed symbols such as alphabet letters and words. Disorientation is turned on by confusion, so the stress and invalidation typically encountered during the early school years compound the problem. Mental tricks are adopted to give the appearance of learning. Loss of self-esteem causes many dyslexics to adopt ingenious methods to hide their learning disability.

In The Gift. Imagination and the Erotic Life of Property, Lewis Hyde uses anthropology, economics, psychology, art and fairy tales to examine the role gifts have played and continue to play in our emotional and spiritual life. By gifts, Hyde means both material objects and immaterial talents and inspirations, such as 'a gift for music' or 'a gift for mathematics.' Or, as Hyde himself so lyrically observes, "I have hoped . . . to speak of the inner gift that we accept as the object of our labor, and the outer gift that has become a vehicle of culture. I am not concerned with gifts given in spite or fear, nor those gifts we accept out of servility or obligation. my concern is the gift we long for, the gift that, when it comes, speaks commandingly to the soul and irresistibly moves us." Above all, Hyde is interested in examining the effect our current immersion in the market economy and the myth of the free market has both on our view of gifts and on our ability to give and receive them. The market economy is deliberately impersonal, but the whole purpose of the 'gift economy' is to establish and strengthen the relationships between us, to connect us one to the other. "It is this element of relationship which leads [Hyde] to speak of gift exchange as 'erotic' commerce, opposing eros (the principle of attraction, union, involvement which binds together) to logos (reason and logic in general, the principle of differentiation in particular). A market economy is an emanation of logos." In a market economy, one can hoard one's goods without losing wealth. Indeed, wealth is increased by hoarding--- although we generally call it 'saving'. In contrast, in a gift economy, wealth is decreased by hoarding, for it is the circulation of the gift(s) within the community that leads to increase--- increase in connections, increase in relationship strength. Through this book, Hyde helps us focus on the importance of gifts, their flow and movement and the impact that the modern market place has had on the circulation of gifts. In the first half of the book, Hyde examines the structure of traditional gift economies. For non-Western cultures he relies on anthropological studies. for Western culture he looks at our fairy tales and myths. In the second half of the book, Hyde looks at the lives and art of Walt Whitman and Ezra Pound, two American poets whose reaction to their gifts and the effects of the market economy on those gifts were very different. Whitman focused his poetic gift on giving expression to the inarticulate, the erotic, the fecundity of nature. Whitman did not hold to material ambitions. he easily distinguished between earning a living and the labor of art --- "The work of my life is making poems," he declared when Leaves of Grass first appeared. Whitman's riches were founded in this refusal to take seriously things outside his art. In contrast, Pound focused his poetic gift on bringing order to the forces of fertility and the erotic through sheer strength of will. He was incensed by the barrenness of his age, by its lack of generosity towards art and artists. (Pound himself was well known for his sponsorship of other artists, most notably T. S. Eliot and James Joyce.) Pound came to obsess on economics and the unjust distribution of wealth. His obsession was the death of his art. Hyde is deeply interested in the transformative gift. the gift that changes us profoundly, often received in the form of psychological healing or spiritual teachings. An important aspect of a transformative gift is that the transformation is not instantaneous. it requires the recipient to undertake some extensive and often difficult inner work in order to effect the transformation completely. What motivates us to undertake this labor? In general, it is a feeling of love and gratitude toward our teacher or therapist. This can lead to problems in today's market economy, where healing and teaching are frequently sold rather than freely given. After all, even a gifted teacher, therapist, or spiritual guide must eat! It is nonetheless possible for an element of the gift economy to circulate above the cash. I recall some young parents at our Waldorf school who, although barely scraping by themselves, managed to come up each year with the full tuition for their child. When asked why they did not apply for financial aid, for which they certainly qualified, they looked surprised and said, "The tuition is our gift to the teachers for what they are giving our child. If we could afford more, we would certainly give it." As an extreme example of the opposite approach, the author mentions the Church of Scientology, which in 1979 (when Hyde's book was published) had a minimum initial 'donation' of $2,700 for a twelve-and-a-half intensive course. This kind of exaggerated cost tends to cut off the forces of love and gratitude necessary for true transformation. The point is that a conversion, in the general sense, cannot be settled on ahead of time. We can't predict the fruits of our labor. we can't even know if we'll really go through with it. Gratitude requires an unpaid debt, and we will be motivated to proceed only so long as the debt is felt. If we stop feeling indebted, we quit, and rightly so. To sell a transformative gift therefore falsifies the relationship. it implies that the return gift has been made when in fact it can't be made until the transformation is finished. A prepaid fee suspends the weight of the gift and de-potentiates it as an agent of change. Therapies and spiritual systems delivered through the market will therefore tend to draw the energy required for conversion from an aversion to pain rather than from an attraction to a higher state. There is another area of Western culture where a remnant of the old gift economy is still active. the scientific community. In examining the community of science, Hyde begins by noting that within this community it is the scientist who shares ideas with others--- who gives away rather than acquires--- who receives the most recognition and status. What, then, is the effect on science of treating ideas as gifts, as contributions to the community? Hyde presents an interesting case. The task of science is to describe and explain the physical world, or more generally, to develop an integrated body of theory that can account for the facts, and predict them. Even such a brief prospectus points toward several reasons why ideas might be treated as gifts, the first being that the task of assembling a mass of disparate facts into a coherent whole clearly lies beyond the powers of a single mind or even a single generation. All such broad intellectual undertakings call for a community of scholars, one in which each individual thinker can be awash in the ideas of his comrades so that a sort of 'group mind' develops, one that is capable of cognitive tasks beyond the powers of any single person. The commerce of ideas--- donated, accepted (or rejected), integrated---constitutes the thinking of such a mind. . . .. '[I]deas in physics are discussed, presented at meetings, tried out and known to the inner circle of physicists working in the great centers long before they are published in papers and books. . . .' A scientist may conduct his research in solitude, but he cannot do it in isolation. The ends of science require coordination. Each individual's work must 'fit,' and the synthetic nature of gift exchange makes it an appropriate medium for this integration. it is not just people that must be brought together but the ideas themselves.

California Young Reader Medal Award - Students Read & Vote - Website description. The California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) program encourages recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of our state. Since 1974, millions of California children have nominated, read, and voted for the winners of the California Young Reader Medal. The CYRM program is sponsored by four statewide organizations committed to books and reading. California Association of Teachers of English (CATE), California Library Association (CLA), California Reading Association (CRA), and California School Library Association (CSLA.) Books are nominated in four categories. Primary (K-2), Intermediate (3-6), Middle School/Junior High (6-9), and Young Adult (9-12.) Students may read and vote for books in any and all categories, but they must read all the books nominated in a category to be eligible to vote. Students read the nominated books from July - March and vote for their favorite. Teachers and librarians introduce the nominees to students, often in exciting and innovative ways. Donate to READING is FUNDAMENTAL - Children who don't have books and who don't read regularly are less likely to succeed in school and life. RIF books are new, carefully selected, and are given to children for their own collection. Readers often take books and reading for granted, not even imagining that many families have few (if any) books at home. RIF is a well-respected and worthy program to support. See
Library FRIENDS and Foundations - Give to your local library. Most libraries have a non-profit Foundation or FRIENDS of the Library organization in order to raise funds for library programs, library furnishings and artwork, and special collections beyond the means of the annual library budget. Special friends and family members can be remembered in small and large gifts, ranging from a gift for books (name plate inside book) or larger bequest for programs (i. e., literacy programs like Project READ) or facilities (capital campaign contribution.)

Author. Jean Giono Publisher. Chelsea Green Publishing Originally published in. 1953 The story. it is a touching story of Elzard Bouffier, a shepherd, who after being widowed, has decided to restore the ruined ecosystem of the isolated and largely abandoned valley in the south of France by single-handedly cultivating a forest, tree by tree. He planted 100 acorns each day before, through, and after two world wars, and transformed a sorrowful place into one full of life and joy. Why it's a great gift. This is an inspirational story about what one person can do to restore the earth. Jean Giono's story offer a tribute to how much good one person can accomplish in a lifetime and advise on how to live life with deep meaning. If you're not sure yet, you can watch the animated version of the story, produced by Frdric Back in 1987. Building on the enormous success of his book 'Shelter', Lloyd Kahn continues his odyssey of finding and exploring the most magnificent and unusual hand-built houses in existence. Page after page, the book describes homes built from the soul, inventiveness free from social constraint, but created with a solid understanding of natural materials, structure, and aesthetics. Author. Colleen Patrick-Goudreau Publisher. Fair Winds Press Published in. 2007 What it is about + Why it's a great gift. The holidays always make me want to slow down and spend more time in the kitchen, making delicious goodies from my friends and loved ones. I've been progressing to become a vegetarian for a few months now, and Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's podcast, Vegetarian Food For Thought has been a wonderful outlet for learning about compassionate eating and actions. Though I don't drink soy milk or even have any blocks of soy in my fridge, I've learned so much from her tips that even my meat-loving boyfriend has been enjoying our dinners even more as of late. Imagine my delight when I heard Colleen was coming out with her first cookbook, titled The Joy of Vegan Baking. The thought of not baking with milk or eggs put me on edge right away, but after tasting some delicious vegan donuts and cupcakes recently, it was clear that no taste would be lost in the transition. There are oodles of preconceived notions about vegetarian and vegan foods, especially desserts, but after tasting some goodies that I made from these recipes, it is clear that those perceptions are wildly outdated. Though I won't be able to spend any of the holidays with my family this year, I will be making treats from my best friend and boyfriend out this book. Will I tell them its vegan? not until they eat 3 or 4 of them and rave about how tasty they are. Any cook, experienced or novice, would enjoy The Joy of Baking - new food revolutions are on the horizon, and vegan baking is just one of them. Featuring full-color photos and 150 familiar favorites -- from cakes, cookies, and crpes to pies, puddings, and pastries -- this book will show you just how easy, convenient, and delectable baking without eggs and dairy can be. This book is fresh from the oven - it came out on October 2007. Check out the book's website for sample recipes and of course to see where you can buy it. Author. Eric Carle Publisher. Simon Schuster Originally published in. 1991 What it is about + Why it's a great gift. Since teensygreen is all about green kids, and I have two little girls of my own, I thought a great kid's book would only be appropriate! Eric Carle is a true champion of animals and nature through his books, and The Tiny Seed takes readers on a beautiful journey through the life cycle of a seed. Kids love to find the smallest seed on every page as it travels many miles through the seasons, overcoming tough obstacles (like hungry birds and big feet!), and finally grows into a stunning, giant flower - only to start the cycle over again. This book works on so many levels - it not only teaches kids about seasons and the life of a seed, but it subtly helps children learn respect for nature, such as why we not only need to plant more flowers and trees, but why we also need to leave what's already there alone. Young children love the colorful collage images, while older kids can get to know the subject through Carle's gentle words. This book, and pretty much all of Eric Carle's books, are great gifts for kids of any age. The vibrant pictures and fun subjects really bring nature to life, and kids learn about the subject at hand through their imagination. The Tiny Seed is also a great conversation starter about nature, the seasons, and helps kids open their eyes to the world outside. I was pleasantly surprised when my older daughter wouldn't pick any flowers at the playground because, as she put it, they need a chance to grow, too! I would recommend any Eric Carle book for the holidays, but The Tiny Seed is an absolute favorite! Stefani Newman is a recent transplant from New York to Florida to Panama City, Panama. If getting used to a new country isn't enough, Stefani decided to jump into the blogging world with her informative blog, teensygreen. teensygreen focuses on helping families make more eco-friendly decisions by highlighting innovative green products, and covering news that brings a little green to every family. When she's not writing she can usually be found at the park, pool, or counting the many ships waiting to get into the Panama Canal!
Author. Bill McKibben Publisher. Times Books Published in. 2007 What it is about. Drive alone into a gated community in the suburbs, to park in a private, 2-car garage and hole up in a secret internet room. This is what our wealth has bought us, according to McKibben. Ways to better seclude ourselves. In America, it's lonely being rich. Deep Economy is most concerned about our sense of self in a hyper-individualized world, a world in which we've been conditioned to deprioritize personal connections with other human beings in the pursuit of individual success, monetary or otherwise. Personal ambition is important, of course. But to McKibben, these ambitions are too often one-sided and unrealistic, in the age of mass media. It's one thing to keep up with the Joneses, quite another to keep up with The O. C., McKibben quips. To prove his point, he takes you through multiple, wide-ranging journeys in Deep Economy. a year of spent eating only local food, a scientific and historical look at the possibilities of a community-based, post-petroleum agriculture, an exploration of mass media and the outlook on local radio, and a somewhat obligatory summary of the pending global warming crisis a crisis that a more community-centered outlook can help mitigate, McKibben points out, as well as help absorb the aftershocks in the case of a true disaster. Why it's a great gift. Deep Economy opens up a different way of thinking about happiness, individuality, community and ambition -- all while providing solid info on the most important issues facing us as a society today. Reading it's sure to give the recipient innovative and exciting ideas for starting off the new year! Now she cuts through the concrete jungle of Los Angeles on her pink Townie bike to shop at local farmers' markets and socialize in pre-loved Prada heels. Author. Chris Goodball Publisher. Earthscan Publications Ltd. Published in. 2007 What it is about. A handbook for cutting your carbon footprint and bills -written by a former director at consumer champion Which?. All the green choices consider the accompanying consider the accompanying cost, so in the case of a hybrid Prius, Goodall concludes that its 18K price means youre paying 350 per tonne of CO2 the car saves. Which he thinks is too much. When it comes to motoring he also does the maths and concludes car clubs like Streetcar and Zipcar are better news than hydrogen cars and biofuel vehicles. This book has bags of authority, and nicely couples personal anecdotes (his allotment) with table after table of hard-headed maths, saving you doing the tedious sums yourself. The occasional slip into academic language (replacing labour with energy is one of the primary engines of economic growth) will turn off some readers, but for most people thisll make for a rewarding and inspiring read. Why it's a great gift. Because its ideal for anyone at the early stage of greening up their life when you want the facts, and you want a cash-saving incentive to help you get motivated. Goodalls book has a sufficient depth of detail to help your giftee make decisions and shopping choices to cut their carbon emissions, instead of general and ultimately unhelpful advice like drive less, use less energy or shop greener. If you want to learn more on the book's topic, please check out Chris Goodall's lowcarbonlife. net, a website with the single purpose of helping individuals in the UK and elsewhere to do something about greenhouse gas emissions. NEWTOWN - It's a matter of opinion whether Nick Wolf really is God's Gift to Women, as he is described on the back cover of his self-published book. But then, the 16-year-old Newtown High School junior is known to be a bit of a jokester, the kind of guy who really doesn't take himself too seriously. In fact, that's why he wrote "101 Pick-up Lines" in the first place. The compilation of ice-breakers that Wolf either made up himself or heard and liked, is the result of years of friends and family members telling him, "You should write that down" or "You should write a book," after he uttered one of his remarks. Lines like "Are you a parking ticket?. Because you have 'fine' written all over you," or "I don't have a library card, but do you mind if I check you out?" may not guarantee the person who uses them a date on Saturday night, but they usually are at least good for a laugh from the girl to whom they are directed. And creating a little levity is what Wolf intended in the first place. "I wanted to write a book that would make people laugh and bring a smile to their faces," he said. But writing the book, as it turned out, was the easy part, he said. Finding someone to publish it was a whole different story for the youngest of Ed and Barbara Wolf's three children. After months of searching, he eventually decided that paying to have it published was the best way to go. "I'm very proud of him," his mother said. "He
Did a lot of research." The book came back from the printer last June, and sales, at $9 per copy, have been decent so far, Wolf said. But the first-time author has a higher motivation than making money. He's hoping to sell enough copies to be able to make a sizable donation to the Newtown Relay for Life when the annual fundraiser for cancer research comes around this summer. His maternal grandmother died from cancer at age 50 in 1986, well before he was born, and raising money for research is a way of honoring her, he said. "I'd like to raise at least $1,000." In the past several weeks, Wolf, who's an Eagle Scout and works at the high school's in-house TV station when he's not dashing off one-liners, has appeared on FOX-61 TV and radio station I-95 to promote the book. It's available at Amazon. com and at Target stores, and he's urging people to pick up a copy. "It's funny and sweet," he said. "If somebody is feeling bad, it makes their day." What is the Gift Book program? Beginning with Books Center for Early Literacy seeks to ensure that all children have access to high-quality books and the necessary support to know the joys and benefits of literacy. The Gift Book program offers parents the support, materials, and encouragement they need to successfully start their children on the road to reading. How does it work? The Gift Book program distributes packets of three quality, new paperback books and tips on reading aloudto low-income families with young children. Parents also receive a coupon to take to the nearest library for a fourth free book. Parents are urged to read to their children every day and are given suggestions on how to make home storytimes more enjoyable and beneficial for children and parents. The books are distributed through social service, health, and educational agencies serving young children and their families in southwestern Pennsylvania. Beginning with Books prepares the staff of these agencies to counsel parents when they receive the packets. What are the benefits? A University of Pittsburgh study compared a small group of kindergarten children who had received book packets at the age of one with a matched control group. The study showed that children who had received the packet four years previously were now more likely to ask their parents to read to them every day (81% vs. 64% of the control group), and their parents were more likely to do so (55% vs. 21%). The study concluded that participants provide more literacy experiences in the home for their children, visited the library more often and provided more reading materials. Moreover, the children whose parents had received the gift packet were perceived by their teachers as having higher reading ability than children of parents who did not receive the packet. On Tuesday, several WebJunction staff members and I participated with hundreds of other ALA conference goers in the association's "Libraries Build Communities" Day to assist the New Orleans Public Library. (Chrystie Hill was in Friday's team, and got photographed with ALA President Leslie Burger.) We were assigned to sort donated books at the Algiers Branch Library. The branch was spared the worst of the storm and the levee break flooding, but Katrina exploited a few small flaws in the building's roof and waterlogged the ceiling. The ceiling proceeded to collapse, ruining everything underneath. This day helped me see the best and the worst of librarians. The best? Hundreds and hundreds of yellow T-shirt clad librarians (and, in our case, at least one public library trustee and one library spouse) filling the atrium of the Morial Convention Center on a warm morning, waiting to head out to their assignments. They --- we --- were filled with a desire to be useful, to try to show that we cared enough to extend our stays by a day or skip some meetings or liquid lunches in order to help. The worst? Well, keep reading.Apparently, some time in late February or early March, a viral e-mail was set loose on the world, claiming that the library needed books, and to send everything you could. See this or this for examples. The donations poured in as if the book levee had been breached. Having spent six hours in one of the places where these donations were stored, I can tell you that most of it was pretty sad stuff. Now please note that I am NOT criticizing the gifts that some of the vendors made. There were a number of boxes of clean, new materials from one large publisher, for example, that looked to be really good. (The publisher has not talked about this gift on its web site that I could find, so I'm not using its name here.)And I'm not even criticizing the civilians (non-librarians) who may have honestly believed that the library and its clientele could use a 1960 edition of
Or marked up mid-1970s physics textbooks, or books on how to lose weight. They meant well, and were responding to what probably seemed like a logical request. But there were also boxes of books that had been sent in by libraries, including some pretty well known libraries. And what was in those boxes was a disgrace. Outdated, dirty, abused, ugly, useless.basically trash. It was as if these libraries were afraid that someone was going to look into their trash bin and find out they were throwing away printed materials. So instead, they shoveled them into boxes and threw them at New Orleans. What could they have been thinking? Instead of helping, this deluge of tripe used staff time that could have gone into restoring service. I'm sure that some libraries and schools gave good, usable materials to New Orleans Public Library, and I know many groups raised money. But 99% of what we found in that cavernous building would not have made decent kindling. I came away with one firm conclusion. I am changing my will so that my book collection gets sold as part of my estate instead of being donated to a library. I realized that I don't own anything that's really worth being contributed to a library, and like most libraries, they need my money a hell of a lot more than they need my used books! Incidentally, the library has an FAQ on its site about donations now. But as one of the NOPL staff told us during the day, she expects that e-mail requesting donations to keep circulating on the web as long as that chestnut about the dying boy collecting the postcards.
Great comment. After years of being the dumping ground for outdated "donated" materials libs should know better. Thanks for blogging about his.
Contributions to the Book Gift Fund are a great way to celebrate any occasion -- graduation, retirement, anniversary, birthday, or holiday -- and donations to this fund also make thoughtful memorial gifts. Book Gifts give you the opportunity to recognize a family member, colleague or friend while you also assist the development of broad and distinctive collections in the University Libraries. Book Gifts can target any collection of interest to you or the honoree.
For contributions to the Gift Book Fund, we select books in the academic field of your choice and mark each with a commemorative bookplate. The bookplate is a lasting reminder of both the occasion or tribute and your contribution to the University Libraries. We notify the honoree of your gift (or the family, in the case of memorial gifts) but the amount is not disclosed.
If you contribute a sum of $1000 or more to the Gift Book Fund at any time, you can request special material and format selections such as reference items, CD-ROMs, or online databases.
Donors of $1000 or more become members of the Andrew Carnegie Society, the university's annual giving society. Donors of $100 or more may apply for library borrowing privileges. All donors receive annual mailings from the library about current projects and initiatives.

Wondering what gift to get someone who clearly enjoys comic books? Here are several present ideas that will leave them delighted.
If an inexpensive gift is in order for a casual to heavy comic book reader, check out some of these gift ideas for under $50.
Gift Certificate to a Comic Book Shop - This is a no-brainer for an easy comic-book related gift. What fan wouldn't enjoy a few free issues or perhaps an amount toward that Fantastic Four bronze statue they've been eyeing?
Subscription to a Series- A gift subscription is also a great idea for the comic book fan who doesn't live near a comic shop. For around $30 a year, depending on the series, each issue of most major series can be mailed to the gift recipient each month like a magazine.
Digital Download Service- Another great service to give as a gift to a comic fan is a subscription to an online database download service. Marvel Comics offers unlimited downloads for $60 a year and other digital services are available elsewhere as well. Great for the comic book fan who doesn't mind reading comics on their computer.
Comic Book Displays- Sometimes a collector wants to display one of their prized comics for all the enjoy. Such gift ideas could be comic book display cases, frames, display binders and lockable display boxes.
The economy is tough right now and things look a little grim, but you can spread joy to someone's life by giving a thoughtful gift. I know that this year even though I am spending less on gifts, I'm giving with more heart. Over the past few weeks I've created several gift guides, including two about books that are great for friends and family, along with yesterday's non book list that won't break the bank. For me, the best part of the holidays is giving (don't get me wrong, I

For coffee and tea drinkers. how about a coffee mug or travel mug from their favorite bookstore? Most regular coffee mugs are less than 10, and travel mugs usually run under $15. Bonus points for including a box of tea bags or a pound of their favorite coffee with the mug. For recessionistas. you can't go wrong with a burse (book purse). It's recycling and fashion rolled into a handbag. For your mail carrier, pilates instructor, hairdresser, or anyone you can't figure out what to get them. gift certificates and gift cards to both independent and chain bookstores are never a bad idea. Thrilling Holiday Gift Book. A Controversial, True Story - One Man Caught in U. S. Government's Psychic Spy Experiments
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 10 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The ideal Christmas gift for those intrigued by governmental conspiracy, "OPERATION BLUE LIGHT. My Secret Life Among Psychic Spies" (Cherubim Publishing, September 2008, ISBN us. $18.95 294 pages), is one of the most scintillating memoirs ever to be written. A true story of deception and subterfuge, it took Philip Chabot 40 years to tell us about his amazing experience, and it's now available through Amazon. com and www. philipchabot. com. Some book reviewers say it's hard to believe, but truth is often stranger than fiction. The fact is, Chabot was a vital player immersed in a fascinating American conspiracy. Through mental technologies, the U. S. Government and the CIA shamefully exploited of a select group of people who had psychic abilities in order to covertly spy on other countries. This book reveals the government's never-ending fascination and involvement with "mental" technologies and their collusion with psychiatric types to master control of the human mind for their own purposes and schemes. "OPERATION BLUE LIGHT. My Secret Life Among Psychic Spies," is the story of the Pentagon's attempts to develop the perfect tool for espionage. psychic spies. These "spoken telepaths" were able to infiltrate any target, elude any form of security, and never risk a thing. For 40 years, the government selected civilian and military personnel for psychic ability, trained them, and put them to work, full-time, at taxpayers' expense, against real intelligence targets. Before now, the only information the public has received was about the work of remote viewers in the 1980's and 1990's. The actual beginning of the use of psychics has not been told until today. Chabot's abilities were monitored then tested by U. S. Government agencies including the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Council, the FBI, the National Security Agency, and maybe others. Most of this material is still officially classified or "conveniently missing." Chabot's story may explain why masses of CIA documents about the MKULTRA Mind Control project, including the material on Extra Sensory Perception, were destroyed in 1972 when Sid Gottleib and Richard Helms retired from the CIA. In "OPERATION BLUE LIGHT. My Secret Life Among Psychic Spies," Chabot finally leaves us his legacy and divulges his terrifying experiences as a Psychic Spy in the turbulent 1960's. This gripping story follows the path that lead a teenager from a small town in Indiana to become the focus of Worldwide covert attention. Chabot confronted the agencies that were trying to manipulate him, and in doing so, neutralized the Cold War threat they posed to his future. An unusual and compelling memoir, Chabot shows that the use of psychics started much earlier than previously revealed. Traditional methods of gathering intelligence include using satellites, intercepting communications and recruiting agents. However, today top secret documents have emerged revealing that the Ministry of Defense ran a covert project to recruit psychic spies during the Cold War in the hope of tracking down people and items of interest to the government and the military. Even more intriguing, according to Chabot, "The use of psychic spies may still be happening today. Most recently, by the 1990s, it was revealed that the Pentagon continued to employ a highly classified team of 'psychic spies,' who use a form of remote viewing to aid in the gathering of intelligence in foreign countries." The author's frightening first-hand experience proves that the life of a psychic isn't as glamorous as it may seem. Even though Chabot discovered his abilities at a young age, the problems of having "the gift" greatly outweighed its benefits. According to book reviewer Bryan Carey of Houston, Texas, "His accurate predictions gave others the creeps and it led many to be fearful of him and label him as unstable. Ultimately, it landed the author in a mental hospital.." Why is Chabot telling his story? "Mostly I felt I owed it to 'the casualties of the cold war's psychic battlefields,' for whom this book is dedicated. I have gotten to a place where I don't care how unbelievable people find it. Also it needs to be told because it is unlike any other -- the accuracy and details of my 'spoken telepathy' I had was not like any published experience. So my story needs to be put on the record." "I also chose to publish it because it is just a good story, and I believe you will enjoy reading it even if you are not among 42% that believe in telepathy. I hope that my book will be of value to those living with psychic abilities, as well as to those who have friends or relatives who have not understood them," Chabot explains. Written in the first person, this story is lively and highly interesting to read -- it actually resembles a spy film as it involves suspense, mystery and a lot of action. The dialogue is vivid and the characters well crafted. It is a gripping story that can be read in one sitting. It is both entertaining and enlightening as it regards the secret agents' field. It caters to all those who love action and spy stories and those who like stories about people with psychic abilities. "We recommend this book because of its personal and gripping story of a young man coming of age with a powerful and impressive gift. Its magnitude overwhelms him." -- The Bookshelf Reviews. "This book flows like a stream of consciousness. It is personal, interesting and fast paced." -- D. McCue "Bigskeeter," Amazon Reviews. And while youre thinking about gift books, be sure to check out these photo books, selected and reviewed by the Monitors staff photographers and photo editors. They range from on history (Looking for Lincoln. The Making of an American Icon, a look at the way Abraham Lincolns legacy was shaped by images after his death) to celebrity (Seen Behind the Scene by Mary Ellen Mark, a collection of backstage photos from more than 100 movie sets on which Mark has worked.) Some take on serious topics such as What Matters, a collection of photo essays assembled by David Elliot Cohen that ask viewers to look harder at some of the critical issues of our time, and Kurdistan. In the Shadow of History, a visual history of the Kurdish people collected and organized by documentary photographer Susan Meiselas. And then there is Magnum Magnum, a book assembled to mark the 60th anniversary of the renowned photo agency. This book is a celebration of the power of photography, a work that the Monitors reviewer calls a visual conversation. Thanks to NR Editorial Associate Elizabeth Fisher, who helped compile your shopping list. Miss Fisher recommends taking this time of year to make sure everyone you know and love has read The Brothers Karamazov. You, of course, don't have to look far for good books. Victor Davis Hanson has a new one out on the Peloponnesian War called A War Like No Other. How the Athenians and Spartans Fought the Peloponnesian War. Priscilla Buckley, former longtime managing editor of NR is author of the new Living It Up With National Review. Bill Buckley returned to his Blackford Oakes character with Last Call for Blackford Oakes. Byron York came out with The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy earlier this year, a good primer for any political junkie going into 2006. John J. Miller's latest is A Gift of Freedom, a look into the world of conservative philanthropy. Mark R. Levin put out the handbook to Supreme Court nominations, Men in Black. How the Supreme Court Is Destroying America. And if you're into advance ordering, Kate O'Beirne's Women Who Make the World Worse is but weeks away. Have a blessed one. And happy shopping too.
Here are two books I read, on impulse, which were very pleasant surprises. Book of Haikus, by Jack Kerouac. Kerouac's prose leaves me pretty cold, but this book of haiku (he eccentrically added the "s") shows a real gift. He is not bound by counting syllables. He defines the form as a three-line snapshot. He gets it better than Allen Ginsberg, and Ginsberg's very short poems are pretty good. NR bonus. Kerouac was a reader when he died. Father and Son. A Study of Two Temperaments, by Edmund Gosse. Philip Gosse was a 19th-century English marine biologist, and a member of the Plymouth Brethren, an extremely austere fundamentalist sect. Darwin gave these pieces of his head a sharp shock. This memoir, by his son, Edmund, a literary critic who introduced Ibsen to England, is critical, funny, and loving all at once. Astonishingly, it does not condescend. An interesting sidelight on the I. D. debate.
Pictures and Tears, by James Elkins. Art historian Elkins "posted inquiries in newspapers and journals, asking for stories from anyone who had responded to a painting with tears." A fascinating analysis of why contemporary viewers steadfastly resist the emotional pull of art. Instead of giving a coffee-table art book, give a book that examines how we respond to art and why we don't. The Mountain of Silence, by Kyriacos C. Markides. In the life of an Eastern Christian island monastery, visible devils still attack monks, and a wonderworking abbot can telescope time. Beneath this surprising material is an invitation. a pre-modern, mystical faith still practiced today, which offers a bracing alternative to intellectualized Western Christianity. For anyone interested in spirituality of any stripe, or even for those who think they're not interested. Animals in Translation, by Temple Grandin. With a Ph. D. in animal science, Grandin says that her autism enables her to understand animals instinctively. Lots to learn for the animal-lover on your list.
In the year 1105, Paris was hardly more than a village of muddy streets and few grand buildings, whereas the Muslim cities of the Middle East were splendid places, lavishly appointed. Yet in that very year, some 3,000 pages of Aristotle's greatest works missing from the West for more than a thousand years were uncovered in Toledo, Spain, where the local Catholic archbishop, Raymund, with world-changing wisdom, brought in a team of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scholars to work together on that treasure trove. Richard Rubenstein's Aristotle's Children (2003) tells the dramatic story of how those long-lost pages changed the trajectory of the future, tilting the West toward empirical reason and practical wisdom. A terrific book. a huge missing piece in the West's own self-knowledge. And an intellectual turning point as world changing as Newton and Darwin. To my surprise, the sociologist Rodney Stark is just publishing a perfect companion book, The Victory of Reason, a story of how the Christian commitment to reason (even in theology) led to invention and discovery beyond the givens of Scripture (concepts such as person and Trinity, for example), and soon also to creativity in political organization, science, and commerce. Stark rejects the soft-bigotry of the "Enlightenment," which described its past as the "Dark Ages." On the contrary, Stark documents how the great victory of reason began much earlier and in a much different place, than the Enlightenment imagined. His shocking subtitle is "How Christianity led to Freedom, Capitalism, and Western Success." These are two great books to read or give for Christmas. Top them off with George Weigel's The Cube and the Cathedral, to learn what happens to Europe when nothing but the Enlightenment is left.
The Engineer of Human Souls, by Josef Skvorecky. This is a beautiful comic novel starring Danny Smiricky, a Czech immigrant to Canada, written by Josef Skvorecky, a Czech immigrant to Canada. It's a not-to-be-missed tale of exile and jazz, communism, and fascism, love, sex, and politics. The Conspiracy of Pontiac, by Francis Parkman. The truth is. anything by Parkman is worth giving as a gift. It could be Conspiracy or The Oregon Trail or Montcalm and Wolfe. Parkman is a great historian and terrific storyteller. And yes, it is possible to be both. There is almost no better way to learn about the history of America than reading Parkman's books. And if you know someone who is a new immigrant, sharing Parkman's clear, concise, and moving history, is one of the most generous gifts you can give. The Book of Jewish Food. An Odyssey from Samarkand to New York, by Claudia Roden. This has got to be one of the best engagement presents I got. It's practical because it includes over 800 recipes. But it's also an amazingly rich, extensively researched, and well-written chronicle of Jewish life. Plus, reading it will help burn a ton of holiday calories. Valley of the Dolls, by Jacqueline Susann. Will this book grant the reader a greater insight into the human condition? Probably not. Does Jacqueline Susann offer a serious commentary on relations between the sexes? Not really, but it's a hell of good way to pass a cold, snowy night. Those little dolls will have you hooked!
I've given away any number of copies of the Library of America's one-volume Flannery O'Connor anthology, Flannery O'Connor. Collected Works, which contains O'Connor's complete novels and short stories and a well-chosen selection of her letters and essays. It's one of the dozen books I keep on my desk so that I can consult it without having to go to my bookshelves, and rarely does a week go by without my dipping into it. I can't think of a better present for the serious reader. I'm delighted to report that America's other O'Connor Edwin O'Connor, author of The Last Hurrah is now represented in the Loyola Classics series of Catholic novels with The Edge of Sadness, which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961. Long out of print and all but forgotten, this haunting tale of a Boston-bred priest and his struggle with loneliness is one of my all-time favorite American novels, at once intensely poignant and warmly funny. The Loyola Press has done yeoman service to the republic of letters by making it available once more. Turning to three of my professional specialties, the best new book I read this year in my capacity as a drama critic was Peter Ackroyd's Shakespeare. The Biography, a lively, wonderfully well-written mixture of known fact and plausible speculation through which I galloped with the utmost pleasure. As for music, Jean Pierre Lion's Bix. The Definitive Biography of a Jazz Legend is a superior piece of biography that tells the sad story of jazz pioneer Bix Beiderbecke skillfully and sensitively. Finally, I commend your attention to Matisse the Master. A Life of Henri Matisse, the second and final volume of Hilary Spurling's biography of the greatest painter of the twentieth century. Speaking as an art collector who appreciates both sound scholarship and lucid writing, I can't begin to say enough good things about this gripping chronicle of a crowded, complicated life.

Offers its readers a rare glimpse into Americas vibrant past through the lens of a virtually unexplored visual vernacular, a world of makeshift means and primitive methods, of gestural madness and unruly visions, of piety and poetry and a million private plagiarisms. To find out more about
