This little thing is thin, lightweight, solid construction, and cranks out more lux than I've ever seen from any other pen light. Incredibly handy and not heavy when you find it stuck in your mouth for 20 minutes looking for something that fell into one of those crevices under your car seat that is, for all intents and purposes, a black hole. You'll have a hard time finding AAAA batteries at most stores (not that you'll need them often as it runs A LONG TIME per set), but here's a trick. Peal open a good quality (copper top) 9 volt battery and inside you'll find 6 AAAA batteries that will fit!!! I will be getting one of these for each car since I've discovered this nifty trick!! For this price at amazon, it's a must have and great gift that anybody is likely to appreciate.
First, I've found all LED lights that make outragous claims of average battery life of dozens to hundreds of hours is either misleading or totally wrong. no matter what brand or where you bought them from. They either go totally dark in much less than half the rated time, or have gone too dim to even read large print with the light pressed closely to the page. To even get close to half the rated life, skip the alkalines, you must use expensive lithium or the highest capacity NiMi rechargables available on the planet. So they all lie about or misrepresent your actual battery life. I'm sure some of them, if you put the most expensive batteries in the world in them, run the light almost to their rated battery life, if you take them into a fully darkend room, & hold the light to your face, strain your eyes, you will find the LEDs are still glowing very faintly. but that's not useful light. I haven't found AAAA rechargables or lithiums, but you won't need them. This is the only LED light I ever found that doesn't give you bull on battery life. It uses a single LED & 3 AAAA alkaline batteries that can be obtained cheap from many sources. Slightly longer than an oridinary pen, I take it everywhere, & is always with me at work. As an engineer, I've used it several times daily for over 6 months with the original batteries. I thought it might be getting a little dimmer so recently put fresh batteries in it. Although it got brighter, not significantly, so I put the old batteries back in. This light just won't die. Lot's brighter than any keychain light, it's as useful as most big lights. It fell 14' from a ladder onto solid concrete, into puddles, snow, & got paint & glue on it. Using harsh chemicals & scraping to get all the paint & glue off, it still looks & works like brand new. I don't know what they used to paint that light with, but there's not a scatch on it anywhere. no dents yet either. Solid & durable. Your best light will be the one that works when you need it to, & is close at hand. Best $14 I ever spent! Update. AAAA Batteries can be found right here at amazon. Just type AAAA or streamlight in the search box. The streamlight AAAA 6-pack runs $6-$7 & are really alkaline energizers. Also if you tear off the metal around a "copper top" alkaline 9 volt battery with a couple of pliers you'll find 6 aaaa batteries inside. But beware. the AAAAs inside the 9 volt battery have the polarity reversed! So you must put those in your light BACKWARDS. You should also stretch the light's spring out a little for a tight fit & better contact. This won't effect it if you go back to ordinary batteries, just make sure to get the polarity right.
While not the brightest flashlight, The stylus is ultra dependable. I've had mine three or four years, it has bounced around my motorcycle bags on camping trips, sits beside my bed in case of power outages, etc. It is very usable lighting your way walking, tasklighting, etc. I would not use it to investigate a dark warehouse. AAAA batteries not too easy to find, but they last forever it seems.
My Dad's favorite Christmas gift This is a nifty pen light! My Dad loves it. We usually make fun of him telling him that he keeps his office in his shirt pocket.
Great penlight!. I just this moment received this penlight..I anxiously opened it to see what I had bought sight unseen!.
Streamlight quality I was not disappointed with this purchase as with all Streamlight products. I have used them for years and they have all been very duarble and have always exceeded my.
Great Light The Streamlight 65018 is the perfect mini flashlight! It fits into a shirt pocket or a purse and is easy to use. The brightness of the white LED light is fantastic.
High Quality Slim Penlight I use this penlight everyday at work. This light is very bright. This is a great neuro assessment tool. Use it like a pen to check your patient's Babinski reflex.
Great Light As a medical professional, I have used many penlights of different types and found that they were either awkward to use or the light would burn out and replacement bulbs are.
Handy Pen Light This item is handy for instant light - although not the brightest as compared to a regular hand-held flashlight. Good for close-up inspections such as documents, etc.
Streamlight Stylus Penlight For my needs it works great and the quality of the light is very nice and the light stream is adjustable.

This item. Streamlight 65618 Stylus Reach Pen Light with Flexible Cable, Black with Arctic White Beam Streamlight
Amazon. com Product Description Let's say you're working on your car and you drop a crucial part down below the engine block. You can't see where it went, and your regular flashlight won't fit into the narrow spaces around your engine. Time to dismantle your car in the hope that you'll recover the part? Of course not! Simply grab your Streamlight Stylus Reach pen light, extend the flexible cable, then thread it around the hoses to get a better look. Whether you're looking for lost auto parts, wayward nuts and bolts, or a spent fuse, this is a handy little light. The high-intensity LED (10 lumens) is mounted at the end of a flexible PVC cable that allows you to get light into very tight spots. The cable may be extended from seven to 14 inches if you need a little more reach. The durable LED will last up to 100,000 hours, and you'll get up to 60 hours of illumination from the included three AAAA alkaline batteries.--Josh DettweilerWhat's in the BoxPen light, three AAAA alkaline batteries
If you've ever worked in confined spaces (under a car's dash, behind a sink, inside an appliance, etc.), you know that at times even small flashlights are too big. Sometimes you need a small light that can wrap around obstructions and light obscured areas. Until now, in these situations I have used a "Bend-A-Light" that is similar to the Stylus Reach. The standard Bend-A-Light retails for about the same price as the Stylus Reach, so a comparison of the two is useful. The Bend-A-Light is larger and slightly heavier. Its flexible neck is longer than that of the Stylus Reach (9.5" vs. 7.5" from bulb tip to flashlight body). However, the effective reach of the Stylus Reach is greater because its body is only slightly wider than its flexible neck (owing to its use of super-small "AAAA" batteries). The body of the Bend-A-Light houses "AA" batteries and is over twice as thick. The Stylus Reach also features an aircraft aluminum casing (vs. the Bend-A-Light's plastic body), a MUCH more flexible neck that is shielded and insulated with PVC, up to 60 hours of run time on one set of three "AAAA" batteries (included), momentary "blink" or constant-on switching, and it's waterproof! Moreover, it has an unbreakable LED light that burns cool and is as bright or brighter than the Bend-A-Light's fragile, incandescent bulb. [I should mention that there is a considerably longer (24"), brighter Bend-A-Light called the "Krypton Pro Bend-A-Light." However, I have no experience with it.] I am exceptionally impressed with the brightness and quality of the Stylus Reach. It is one of those items that nobody knows they need until they have it. It would make a great gift for any do-it-yourselfer or tech geek. If Streamlight would make a version of the Stylus Reach with a longer neck, I'd happily buy it, too.
Top quality light in every way. bright white light, durable bulb, strong shaft, on/off switch easy to actuate. Size is perfect the batteries are a little hard to come across and needs an apparatus to focus the light. Still the best pen light I have ever seen or used and anyone who has used my light inquires, how much was it? and where did you get it?
As a welding inspector for commercial, residential and public buildings and bridges I get sent to look at some difficult to reach areas off ladders, in deep trenches or 17 stories up a steel frame. The areas that I look at are poorly lit and at times I have to use a mirror to see all areas, this light gets me 100% coverage for what I need to do. The bad news is that this light takes AAAA (quadruple A) batteries, if you don't stock up and carry extras this light is nothing but dead weight in your pocket. A fresh set of batteries do last about 4 weeks or so for me, product says they're rated to 60 hours. I keep a fresh pack of batteries in my canvas bucket just in case, of course I keep an extra light as well. The flexible cable is tough and the entire light fits snugly in any of my coverall pockets. The LED tip is unprotected, scuffs easily, but the brightness doesn't seem to be affected by this.

A light-sensitive stylus wired to a video terminal used to draw pictures or select menu options. The user brings the pen to the desired point on screen and presses the pen button to make contact. Contrary to what it looks like, the pen does not shine light onto the screen. rather, the screen beams into the pen. Screen pixels are constantly being refreshed. When the user presses the button, the pen senses light, and the pixel being illuminated at that instant identifies the screen location.
This handmade prototype of a "light gun" in 1952 was part of the Whirlwind Project at MIT. Subsequent devices were used to hone in on suspicious blips on the CRT in the U. S. air defense system (see Whirlwind and SAGE). (Image courtesy of The MITRE Corporation Archives.)

It allows the user to point to displayed objects, or draw on the screen, in a similar way to a touch screen but with greater positional accuracy. A light pen can work with any CRT-based display, but not with LCD screens (though Toshiba and Hitachi displayed a similar idea at the "Display 2006" show in Japan
), projectors and other display devices. A light pen is fairly simple to implement. The light pen works by sensing the sudden small change in brightness of a point on the screen when the electron gun refreshes that spot. By noting exactly where the scanning has reached at that moment, the X, Y position of the pen can be resolved. This is usually achieved by the light pen causing an interrupt, at which point the scan position can be read from a special register, or computed from a counter or timer. The pen position is updated on every refresh of the screen. The light pen became moderately popular during the early 1980s. It was notable for its use in the Fairlight CMI, and the BBC Micro. Even some consumer products were given light pens, in particular Thomson's TO7 and TO7/70 computers. Due to the fact that the user was required to hold his or her arm in front of the screen for long periods of time, the light pen fell out of use as a general purpose input device. The first light pen was used around 1957 on the Lincoln TX-0 computer at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and is mentioned as the "Lincoln Wand" in the first RFC, RFC 1. Since the current version of the game show Jeopardy! began in 1984, contestants have used a light pen to write down their wagers and responses for the Final Jeopardy! round. Since light pens operate by detecting light emitted by the screen phosphors, some nonzero intensity level must be present at the coordinate position to be selected.

A penlight is a small, pen-sized flashlight, usually containing two AA batteries or AAA batteries. A number of different designs are common. In some an incandescent light bulb has an integral lens that focuses the light, thus no reflector is built into the penlight. Others, such as the well known Maglite brand use incandescent bulbs and standard reflectors, while LED bulbs are becoming increasingly common.

The Audioprism CD Stop Light Pen is a proprietary coating that is applied to the edge of a compact disc using a convenient applicator pen. Application is easy and takes only seconds. The Audioprism CD Stop Light Pen reduces the scattered reflections of the laser beam and increases the signal-to-noise ratio of the detected laser. The result is an overall increase in clarity and a significant decrease in the edginess in the sound of many compact discs. You will notice an immediate and dramatic increase in clarity, resolution, and ambience. You can enjoy the convenience and mobility of digital audio while still enjoying the warmth and clarity sound so often associated with analog. It's nothing short of spectacular. "The improvement was astonishing!" - Dick Olsher, Stereophile, March, 1990. "The cost per disc of this tweak is almost zero it offers a big bang for the buck and can be confidently recommended." - John Atkinson, Stereophile July, 1995.

High upon a mountaintop a stone may dream of flight. This we respect before it hits our heads. But the sauce pan neither dreamed nor tried to move. When the quantum clangs that steady state will change. And so the saucepan flew. A black hole flipped quark on Lipseys front, which stream Newtonicly transferred to mouth. Tobacco juice shot straight in TidBs eyes. The saucepan landed on his brow. The rock then landed in the bed of coals. Sparks came down. Dark screams roused mules. Picture books gave words. Sparks are falling. Mules are bawling. TidB is waving blind. Grad students fell in all directions. Fire coals took buggies. Phoenix scalped the Patagonian hump. Who will pay the bill? There is no Jack Bommb in the book. Shall we send a platitude down? Attach it to a rock? Better the trouble we already caused before its worse. How bout, in response to your inquiry that knowledge is now given? How about, Pilgrim Bones? How about, Baghdad Come! Injections or a pill would serve.
On your typical tv set the electron gun (in the CRT) scans across the screen (phospor) one line at a time. It starts at the upper left corner of the screen then draws going to the right. When it gets to the right the electron gun turns off goes down one line and turns on and draws the next line. It does this until it gets to the bottom of the screen. Where it goes back to the top and starts over again. These are called raster lines. Well when the electron beam hits the phosphor it glows brightly and slowly dims until it is struck again by the electron beam. Our eyes don't really notice this bright and dimming because they do not refresh that fast. You can see the bright/dim effect if you record the picture on the tv with a camcorder. Since the TV and the Camcorder refresh at about the same frequency you will see a bright group of lines that roll up the screen. Since the Video Chip in the computer has to create the video signal it knows where it is currently drawing the curent raster line. The light pen when pointed to the screen detects this bright/dim effect and when the light goes from dim to bright it sends a signal pulse to the video chip. The video chip sets a latch which feeds 2 numbers, usually X location, Y location, into a memory location associated with the video card/chip. The computer program then looks at the numbers in the memory location. And can tell where the light pen is pointed on the screen by the two numbers. Some light pens are more sensitive than others. They are usually just a Photo receptor cell with a pinpoint lens and a schmitt-trigger flip flop chip. Some video cards had light pen plugins on them. For example CGA and EGA cards had a light pen connector in them with following pinout. 1 Light Pen Input [-] 2 no pin 3 Light Pen Switch [-] 4 +5V output 5 +12V output I have not seen or heard of one on a VGA or higher video card. Not a high demand item, but there are probably ones out there. The sensitivity of the nintendo gun is probably to low/slow to work at the higher scan rates of the tipical computer monitor. TV scan rates are pretty slow compaired to the computer ones. So if you find a video card that has the light pen plugin you will probably have to use their light pen.
The persistance of the phosphor is overcome by its fast attack characteristic which gives a useful response. Back in the 60's and 70's many computer terminals used light pens, and they used just this principle. You can check it out for yourself by holding a biased photodiode up to a TV screen and observing its output on an oscilloscope.
Most modern video game light pens work in the same way as the light pen. The only exception is that the gun is some distance away from the screen and the optics inside light pen make sure that the photodetector "sees" only a small part of the video screen. On old games where all you need is a simple 'hit/miss' indication, some of the video games really cut the corners. Sometimes you can see that during the bright flash, the target areas go completely dark. Dark isn't totally dark, they probably get some output. However, I would guess that it would be a lot easier to tell the difference between bright and dark decay curves than it is monitor every line, pixel by pixel.
Many people have asked in many forums is is possible to convert old video game light pen or light gun to a PC. Quite propably this is possible if you put enough electronics and effort on the project. I don't have any plans for this. Most often the light gun is consructed in such way that is it just a simple light detector that detects the light going to position the gun is pointing at. On your typical tv set the electron gun (in the CRT) scans across the screen (phospor) one line at a time. It starts at the upper left corner of the screen then draws going to the right. When it gets to the right the electron gun turns off goes down one line and turns on and draws the next line. Well when the electron beam hits the phosphor it glows brightly and slowly dims until it is struck again by the electron beam. The video chip in the video game knows where it is currently drawing the curent raster line. This is how this idea is implemented in most video gme hardware. PC graphics cards once (CGA and EGA cards etc..) used to have connector for attaching a light pen or light gun. It worked in the way above. This feature was very rearely used. With the introduction of the VGA card, this connector and functionality has been removed from the graphics cards, because it was not needed. So adding a light gun to a modern PC get much harder, because the graphics card does not have the necessary hardware built into it. If you want to get the location information from light pen signal, some special external hardware that connects to light pen and graphics card connector needs to be added. The hardware can measure the Y position by counting the number of HSYNC pulses between last VSYNC pulse and the pulse from the light pen sensor. For X-position the time from las HSYNC pulse to light gun pulse needs to be measure accurately (counting the number of pixel clock pulses from grahics card is the idea, but generally you can't get the pixel clock out of PC graphics card through the standard connectors in them, so other tricks needs to be used) Maybe constructing this technology today does not make much sense. The reason is that there is a huge work ro build this kind of thing and the time it is usable is pretty limited. Light gun can only work on CRT monitors (and maybe some CRT video projectors). Light gun technology does not work with LCD flat nale displays that are quicly becoming more and more popular on PC systems.

I'm an aircraft owner and use this very powerful LED-powered pen during night flying, but also while traveling on commercial flights and mostly at odd times. crosswords, fishing for something in the car at night, etc. The lighting and ink are independently controlled, so in addition to being effective, it's easy to use. the button on top is on/off for the light and the pen rotates to retract the ink. I've had some promotional-type LED pens in the past, but the button cells burn out and then it's difficult to replace them. This pen runs on a single AAA cell, which is easy to find and replace. The pen also comes with an extra battery and ink cartridge for $20 (with shipping) -- not too bad. -- Robert Cullinan

A light pen is a fascinating input device. By pointing a light pen at the computer's screen and pressing its input button, you can make selections from a menu, draw a picture, or perform whatever function the computer program you're using allows. The biggest attraction of a program which uses a light pen is that you don't have to use the keyboard-using a program becomes as simple as pointing. To understand how a light pen works, you must know a bit about how your computer's monitor displays a picture. Pictures on the screen are made up of tiny dots of light. These dots are produced from an electron gun in the monitor which shoots electrons at the screen. These electrons excite the phosphor coating on the screen, causing it to emit light. In this way, the electron gun actually "paints" the picture, dot by dot, row by row, until the screen is filled. All of this is done in a fraction of a second and is updated many times every second. Your computer keeps track of where the beam of electrons from the electron gun is at all times. The light pen, when pointed to a spot on the screen, triggers the computer to store the location of the beam as it passes. These x and y coordinates are placed in special registers of your computer. Since the position of the beam stored is the same as that of the light pen, programs can determine where you're pointing the light pen by checking the values contained in these registers. The program can then use this information to perform various functions, like drawing a line or selecting an option. Here's what you'll need to make a simple light pen.
When building the light pen, refer to Figure 6-1, the schematic drawing for the light pen circuit, and Figure 6-2, the solderless breadboard layout, as you follow these instructions.
5. Remove the ink cartridge from the ballpoint pen. The barrel of the pen will act as the body of your light pen. With your hot soldering iron, carefully melt a small hole at the end of the barrel where the ballpoint used to be for the wires.
6. Cut four pieces of stranded copper wire about 30 inches long to connect your light pen with the solderless breadboard. These wires must be long enough to allow you to move the light pen freely. 7. Solder one of the four wires to the emitter lead of the phototransistor. Another wire should be soldered to its collector lead. Attach a small piece of electrical insulation tape around both the collector and emitter leads so that they won't come in contact and short out. 8. Pull the wires of the phototransistor through the pen barrel and glue the phototransistor in place at the "tip" end. Be careful not to get any glue over the phototransistor's light-sensitive part. 9. The wire from the emitter plugs into position X16 of the solderless breadboard, while the wire from the collector inserts into point A16. 10. Solder the remaining two 30-inch wires to the leads of the microswitch. Pull the wires through the hole you melted and out the open end of the pens barrel. Glue the microswitch to the barrel of the pen. 11. One of the wires from the switch inserts into point A1 on the breadboard, while the other goes into point A2. 12. Insert the 1K resistor between points C2 and C11 of the solderless breadboard. (For the Atari version of this circuit, use a jumper wire in place of the resistor.)
To check that your light pen is operating properly, turn off your computer and insert the 9-pin plug into control port 1 of the Commodore 64/128 and Atari computers. (The VIC has but one control port.) A light pen won't work in control port 2 of the Commodore 64 and 128 computers. Turn on your computer, type in, and run the appropriate version of Program 6-1.
5 A=564.B=565 10 PRINT "X=".PEEK(A).'Y=".PEEK(B) 20 GOTO 10 Download (Saved BASIC)Download / View (Listed BASIC) Move your light pen around the screen while pressing the microswitch. The numbers of the two columns should change, giving you the coordinates of the point of your light pen.
Your computer is set up to store the position of the electron beam every time pin 6 of the control port, normally at a logic high state, is set low. The light pen circuit is designed to set this pin low. This triggers the computer to save the electron beam's position when it passes the light pen. The phototransistor acts as a very fast switch. Normally, the path between the emitter and collector of the phototransistor is like that of an open switch. The moment the beam of the electron gun passes the point at which the phototransistor is aimed, enough light is emitted to turn the transistor on. When this happens, the connection between the emitter and the collector of this device is effectively that of a closed switch. Since the emitter is connected to ground, the inputs of the NAND gate, which are attached to the collector, are grounded as well. The operation of NAND gates and other logic building blocks is explained in greater detail in Chapter 10, "Digital Logic." Let it suffice to say here that the two NAND gates used in the light pen circuit act as a noninverting buffer. Noninverting buffers are used when a signal isn't sufficient to drive the inputs of other IC gates. The output of this type of buffer is the same as its input. The output of the buffer is connected to pin 6 of the control port through a resistor and the push button switch. When the push button switch is open, the light pen circuit is disconnected from pin 6 of the control port. The push button switch must thus be pressed if this pin is to be triggered. When the light pen is aimed at a point on the screen and the button is pressed, several things happen. Because the screen picture is refreshed many times each second, the electron beam passes the phototransistor at least once in the time it takes to press and release the button. Before and after the beam passes the phototransistor, the input and output of the buffer are logic high, and as a result, pin 6 remains at that state. The moment the beam passes the phototransitor, the input and output of the NAND gate buffer are set low. Thus, pin 6 of the control port is set low for a fraction of a second, long enough to trigger the computer to store the location of the electron beam.
As you ran the test program, you probably noticed that when the pen was held at one spot, the coordinate numbers didn't remain constant, but instead stayed within a relatively small range. This must be taken into account when writing programs to work with your light pen. Another point to remember is that once you use the light pen, the values remain the same in their registers until the light pen is used again. This means your program should have a way of checking that the values in the register are a new selection rather than a previous selection. For instance, suppose the registers contain the values 120 and 125 from a previous menu selection. When you put up your next menu, you expect the user to make another selection with the light pen. In order to determine where the light pen is pointed, you might compare the register values to a specified coordinate range. If the range includes one of the values from the previous selection, the program would immediately proceed as if the pen is pointed in this range before the user even has a chance to use the light pen. One way to avoid this problem is to check whether the user has pressed the push button again. This insures that the previous values in the register have no effect on the selection. Since the light pen line (pin 6) is the same as that of the fire button, you can check for it the same way you would check for the fire button. Another way to avoid this problem is to make sure two consecutive menus have no ranges in common.
Try entering and running the appropriate version of Progam 6-2, which shows how a light pen can be used to make selections from a menu. When the menu appears, just point to the asterisk (*) beside your choice and press the microswitch. The screen clears and the choice you made appears. After a short delay, the word CONTINUE is displayed with an asterisk in front of it. Point your light pen to the asterisk and press the microswitch to return to the menu.

The invention relates to a light pen input system with a light pen which is adapted to generate at least one scanning light line sweep for scanning a surface such as for example a display screen. The time from starting a scan until a light sensing element placed at a known position detects a scanning light line is measured and processed for determining the coordinates of the pointing position of the light pen. Thus, an 'inverse' light pen is provided which may be implemented at low costs and which may be used with non-CRT displays. Furthermore, the system is independent of the display screen size.

The Belkin Penlight Stylus is an interesting accessory for your Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). It is a replacement for your existing stylus and is designed with a built in LED tip and reasonably good balance and feel for writing Graffiti. The LED is powered by a replaceable BR435 Lithium 3V battery, one of which is supplied with the stylus. The LED light in the stylus is meant to be used occasionally instead of your PDA's backlight, thereby extending the life of your PDA battery. Belkin Components (formerly Belkin Corporation), has a huge list of PDA and other accessories in its product list these days and the Penlight PDA Stylus is one of the newest additions.
The stylus works reasonably well, but it's not a replacement for your PDA's backlight. Unlike the PDA's backlight, only a small Graffiti area is visible around the stylus tip. The light brightly illuminates only a small, circular area about 10mm in diameter, surrounded by a 4mm wide band of shadow and a wider, diffuse outer ring of faint light. You can't tell if the Graffiti you're writing is complete nonsense unless you stop and check the output every few words. You have to concentrate on what you're writing and avoid looking at the bright stylus tip. The stylus light is strictly for emergencies, such as situations in poor light in which your PDA battery is nearly dead and you have to enter some important data.
Cons. The LED lens - which forms the writing tip of the stylus - is not frosted and does not diffuse the light into a soft, even pattern. There is also a band of shadow, the light is harsh and you will get reflections off your PDA screen, all of which make it difficult, though not impossible, to use the Penlight PDA Stylus as an emergency reading light.
Pros. Battery life is quite good. The tiny lithium BR435 can last through months of occasional use and replacements have come way down in price - as low as $2.00. The stylus is a featherweight, lighter than a stock PDA stylus, but well-balanced. I like it as a Graffiti writing instrument (although it's not significantly better than the Sony stylus I normally use and like just fine). I wrote this review on the PDA using the Belkin stylus. When your PDA battery life is down to 5% and you have to take a bunch of notes in a poorly lit area, the Belkin Penlight PDA Stylus may come in handy.
Abstract. Background. Photophobia has been described as a useful sign in distinguishing severe from benign eye pathology. Objective. This observational study was performed to assess the utility of the penlight test for photophobia in patients presenting with a red eye in general practice. Methods. Thirty patients presenting with a red eye to one GP in 1 year were studied. All patients were examined with a penlight flashlight for photophobia. This was followed by slit-lamp examination for diagnosis of serious or benign eye pathology. Results. The penlight test was positive in eight out of 10 (80) patients with serious pathology (mainly uveitis and keratitis) and was negative in 21 out of 26 (81) patients with less serious pathology (mainly conjunctivitis). The positive predictive value of the test was 60 and the negative predictive value was 90 (chi-squared = 7, P = 0.001, odds ratio = 17, 95 confidence interval 2179).Conclusion. The penlight test for photophobia was found to be a useful test for distinguishing serious from benign eye pathology in a general practice population.

Alkaline and zinc-carbon penlight batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.5V each. NiCd and NiMH penlights have a nominal voltage of 1.25V. The answer also depends on how the batteries are wired. If they are in series, the voltage is 4 times the nominal voltage. If they are in parallel, the voltage is the same as the nominal voltage, but they can handle 4 times the current.

Simultaneous surface area measurement for multiple objects by geodesic active contourOptik - International Journal for Light and Electron Optics.
A novel measurement scheme for a three-dimensional (3D) object's surface boundary perimeter is proposed. This scheme consists of three steps. First, a light-pen single-camera 3D coordinate vision measurement system is devised to obtain the 3D coordinates of a detected object's 3D surface boundary. Second, a novel 3D B-spline active contour is applied to converge to the object's 3D surface boundary accurately. Finally, for the convergent active contour, its true contour length is computed as the detected object's true perimeter. An experiment on a bent surface's perimeter measurement indicates that this scheme's measurement repetition error decreases to 0.6%.
Sea pens do look a lot like quill pens stuck into the sandy bottom of oceans or bays, largely because of the feathery appearance of their plant-like "branches."In reality, of course, they have nothing to do with feathers or plants. They are animals ancient ones that evolved hundreds of millions of years ago in seas mostly filled with creatures like themselves. Before brains and complex nervous systems developed, organisms such as sea pens and jellyfish ruled the day. Along the spine of the slender sea pen is a collection of hundreds of polyps that extend out from the main body to filter particles or small creatures from seawater. They are equipped with stinging cells, so they can stun the tiny animals that make up part of their diet. In times of danger most of the sea pen can slip down into the sand, leaving only a slim bit of stalk above the surface. One fascinating property of the slender sea pen is its ability to generate its own light patterns, a trait known as bioluminesence. It is thought to help attract prey, but one source reports interesting effects when they are disturbed. touch them near the middle of the stalk, and ripples of light emanate outward in both directions. Touching one end causes the light to ripple one way only, while touching both ends causes two sets of ripples to move toward the middle, brightening where they meet. They're normally found only at depths of 50 feet or more in the ocean, although in protected bays, the same source says they might be seen in shallower water. Routines developed for an ongoing course in research methods and statistics provides examples of the custom instructional applications that can be created using extended BASIC and a light pen, including title and transition displays, progressive disclosure, animation, overlays, and simulations. Strengths of this technique are reviewed. (MBR)
See Detailed RatingsJune 19, 2008. John D. Perez is a talented new author, 'Light at the End of My Pen!' This book had me laughing, crying and excited about the hope for mankind and for our next generations. A very insperational read and I would recommend it to all of the Barnes and Nobel family of readers!

In computing, a device resembling an ordinary pen, used to indicate locations on a computer screen. With certain computer-aided design (CAD) programs, the light pen can be used to instruct the computer to change the shape, size, position, and colours of sections of a screen image.
The pen has a photoreceptor at its tip that emits signals when light from the screen passes beneath it. From the timing of this signal and a gridlike representation of the screen in the computer memory, a computer program can calculate the position of the light pen.
