Using the photo editor, open up a new blank image in the size wanted for the luggage tag. Most of the self-laminating luggage tag sheets are no larger than 2.5 inches by 4.5 inches, so its best to keep that in mind. Copy and paste the images picked out for the tag design into this blank field and arrange them into a collage, reducing them in size as needed. Repeat for the other side of the tag. Its fine to have the images go all the way to the edge, but along one side, leave space for the contact information.
When the luggage tag design looks as desired, print it out onto the cardstock. Carefully cut out the tag and laminate with the self-sealing plastic. This will keep it durable for multiple uses. The luggage tag laminates should come with a cutout along one edge, along with plastic loops to attach the tags to the luggage. Simply use the cutting blade to get rid of the cardstock that shows through this cutout, leaving space to attach the loop firmly through the tag. In place of the plastic loop, a metal keyring or even a strong piece of ribbon or fabric can be used. Have fun, get creative and enjoy these DIY tags. You can also do it your belt loop on your pants. Just bring it around, stick this thru and there you go you're attached. You do the same with your luggage tag. If she wanted to tag on hers also, just sit there and she's all frogyed up ready to go. Picking out the fabrics is the most fun on this. This is my cell phone holder, and I took a counted cross stitch pattern and incorporated it on the front. Actually what it was was a card I had bought at a craft fair just like this. I just ripped it off and sewed it into here, which is so appropriate. You can do embroidered items, fussy cut things. I thought this would be very appropriate if we fussy cut. Fussy cut means you take a certain portion of the fabric. In this case, the portion would be the front right here. You would arrange it to where this girl would be right here. You would just specifically fussy cut your strip. Another one I meant to dick and jane. I think this would be fun to fussy cut a particular design to put on the front of your holder. To be fast and easy, look at all the fun fabrics you can do. Wouldn't this be a great luggage tag for all your kids. Don't forget to mark diaper bags. Hi! I'm Shelly Cordon with expertvillage. com. We are continuing making our luggage tag. We have our piece that's 3 1/2 x 12. We're going to turn it to the wrong side and we're going to iron our interfacing onto it and then get ready for sewing. Okay. When you iron the interfacing to this, we have cut this about 1/2 inch smaller because it takes less bulk out of the seam so make sure you see this shiny side face down on the wrong side of your fabric. You're going to iron that. You'll follow the instructions on the pellon, but you basically hold it for a few seconds, lift, and just work your way down. You do not slide the iron when you iron on pellon. We have our interfacing sewed on. Now we're going to take it right sides together, fold it in half and just put a stabilizing pin in there. Now we're going to start right here. not in the center. We're going to leave an opening, so come in about an inch on each side. We're going to start sewing 1/4 inch here, come this way, all the way down, backstitch and stop. Come up here, sew, down, backstitch and stop. We're are going to sew 1/4 inch seams, so make sure your machine is setup for 1/4 inch. I happen to have a 1/4 inch foot. I'm going to put that down. The first few stitches, I'm going to take about 3 stitches, back stitch, and then come back down. Stop, keep your needle in, turn, and continue 1/4 inch down. When you get to the end, you want a do a few blocking backstitches. Now we're going to do the other side the same way. Okay, I've got my 1/4 inch seam sewed all the way around, left an opening. Now we're going to take our scissors and we're going to cut all these corners real sharp. Makes it easier for turning. So we have all 4 corners trimmed. Now we're going to turn it inside out. You might have to struggle a little bit because your interfacing is very stiff. Just be persistent. That's why we backstitched. So here comes our little frog. I tool I love to doing my turning in and out is the purple thing they call. It's just the same thing as if you wanted to use a pencil with an eraser on the ends. Stick that up in there, or those wooden skewers you can buy to make your kabobs. Just we real careful that you don't go poking a hole through the bottom. This just kind of works your corners out. gets you nice clean points. Then now we're going to just press it, tuck in our opening and then we're going to make our handle next.

E thought you'd enjoy this JW 'tag sighting' story. Editor Evelyn Hannon's daughter, Erica Ehm regularly criss-crosses the country on media assignments. One day this month the phone rang in the Journeywoman office. It was Evelyn's daughter via cell phone who said, 'Someone wants to speak to you.' That person was Theresa, a WestJet employee (and also a member of our Journeywoman Network) who was checking in passengers at the Edmonton Airport. She recognized Erica, looked at her suitcase and said, 'Where are your Journeywoman luggage tags?' Theresa was calling to report that Journeywoman's daughter (shame on her) had left her JW luggage tags at home. Needless to say, all involved had a very good giggle.

Have a tip for other JourneyWomen that I think will be very helpful. I always use two different luggage tags (one pretty JW tag and one simple plastic one) on each piece of luggage. I attach them in two different places. I do this because the airline conveyor belts love 'to eat' luggage tags. Often my bags arrive without one tag but the other has survived. Phew! After I made this and attached it to my luggage, I thought to myself one that size will never survive a trip through baggage handling because my plastic one barely does! This is an easy project that can be made for school back packs, library totes or laptop bag for holding your fabulous business cards when you are at a blogging conference. Plus, in doing this project I realized I can make a fabric book with vinyl picture pockets for my nephew (and if I get started now, Ill have it ready by his May birthday!). Note, I did make the vinyl pocket over-sized because I watched this adorable young boy struggle to get his library card out of his wallet because the opening was too snug. I did not want the opening to be just the size of a business card and wanted the option of making my own contact information insert. My supplies. 2 - 4 x 6 pieces of fabric (I used red gingham old denim - using up my stash) 1 - 3 x 4 vinyl 1 - fusible interfacing ~3 by 5 (I eye-balled measured this piece after I sewed the outer pieces) 1/4 grommet length of ribbon scissors iron sewing machine with a teflon presser foot to sew vinyl or a piece of tape on your presser foot - thanks futuregirl for the hack! Directions (Im not skilled at giving directions mostly because I do not know the lingo, I just figure it out and do it, so here goes). 1. With the wrong sides of the 46 pieces of fabric together, sew three sides - leaving the top open. 2. Trim excessive fabric at the corners, turn right side out and push out the corners (this is a part I dont know how to explain, but you need to do so you do not have bulky corners). 3. Press with iron. 4. Eyeball/measure fusible interfacing and insert, iron. 5. Fold in and with the iron press down the top seam and sew. 6. Before attaching the vinyl this is your last chance to iron since you cannot iron vinyl. 7. Place vinyl on the side that you want to be the front (mine is the red gingham side) and tape lightly on the open side (which when finished will be the side near the grommet). 8. Make sure you are using a teflon foot or have placed transparent tape on your presser foot. Also, I sewed with the thin paper (because it came off a roll at the fabric store, that paper is used to keep it from stick to itself) side up to ensure it would not stick. 9. Sew three sides of the vinyl - by putting the tape on the open side I knew not to sew that side (these are the things I have to do to remind myself!) and back stitch at the end to secure the stitch. 10. At this point, I had to remove that paper I mentioned above. 11. Measure and cut the hole for the grommet. 12. Attach grommet and ribbon. If my directions seem to miss a step or are unclear, please leave me a comment. Likewise, if you make a luggage tag, let me know, Id love to see what fabrics you used!
