A dog tag is the informal name for the identification tags worn by military personnel, because of their resemblance to actual dog tags. The tag is primarily used for the identification of dead and wounded along with providing essential basic medical information for the treatment of the latter such as blood type

And history of inoculations. In the event the member has a medical condition that requires special attention, an additional red tag with the pertinent information is issued and worn with the dog tags. Wearing of the tag is required at all times by soldiers in the field. It may contain two copies of the information and be designed to break easily into two pieces. This allows half the tag to be collected for notification while the other half remains with the body when battle conditions do not allow the casualty to be immediately recovered. Alternatively, two identical tags are issued. One is worn on a long chain around the neck. the second on a much smaller chain attached to the first chain. In the event the wearer is killed the second tag is collected and the first remains with the body. Dog tag tattoos, alternately known as "meat tags" are growing in popularity for active U. S. soldiers. These are tattoos that are usually featured on the torso, and can be used for identification in case the deceased is otherwise unidentifiable.

During the American Civil War of us., some soldiers pinned paper notes with their name and home address to the backs of their coats. Other soldiers stencilled identification on their knapsacks or scratched it in the soft lead backing of the Army belt buckle. Manufacturers of identification badges recognized a market and began advertising in periodicals. Their pins were usually shaped to suggest a branch of service and engraved with soldier's name and unit. Machine-stamped tags were also made of brass or lead with a hole and usually had (on one side) an eagle or shield and such phrases as "War for the Union" or "Liberty, Union, and Equality." The other side had the soldier's name and unit and sometimes a list of battles in which he had participated. A New Yorker named John Kennedy wrote to the U. S. Army in 1862, offering to furnish discs for all officers and men in the Federal Army, enclosing a design for the disc. The National Archives now has the letter along with the reply, a summary refusal without explanation. In the Spanish-American War, soldiers purchased crude stamped identification tags, sometimes with misleading information.

The Prussian Army issued identification tags for its troops at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. They were nicknamed Hundemarken ("dog tags") and compared to a similar identification system instituted by the Kaiser for dogs in the Prussian capital city of Berlin at about the same time.

The British Army and their Imperial forces in Canada, Australia and New Zealand issued identification tags from the beginning of the First World War. The tags were made of fibre, one in red and one in green and suspended around the neck by butcher's twine. The same pattern was worn into the Second World War and the Korean War by Commonwealth forces. The U. S. Army first authorized identification tags in War Department General Order No. 204, dated December 20, 1906, which essentially prescribes the Kennedy identification tag. "An aluminum identification tag, the size of a silver half dollar and of suitable thickness, stamped with the name, rank, company, regiment, or corps of the wearer, will be worn by each officer and enlisted man of the Army whenever the field kit is worn, the tag to be suspended from the neck, underneath the clothing, by a cord or thong passed through a small hole in the tab. It is prescribed as a part of the uniform and when not worn as directed herein will be habitually kept in the possession of the owner. The tag will be issued by the Quartermaster's Department gratuitously to enlisted men and at cost price to officers." The Army changed regulations on July 6, 1916, so that all soldiers were issued two tags. one to stay with the body and the other to go to the person in charge of the burial for record-keeping purposes. In 1918, the Army adopted and allotted the serial number system, and name and serial numbers were ordered stamped on the identification tags of all enlisted troops. (Serial number 1 was assigned to enlisted man Arthur B. Crean of Chicago in the course of his fifth enlistment period.) In 1969 the Army converted to the Social Security number for personnel identification. Some nations (e. g. Germany) had instead a single tag with identical information stamped on both sides of it, which could easily be broken off for the purpose of record-keeping.

There is a recurring myth about the notch situated in one end of the dog tags issued to United States Army personnel during World War II. It was rumored that the notch's purpose was so that if a Soldier found one of his comrades on the battlefield, he could take one tag to the commanding officer and kick the other between the teeth of the Soldier to ensure that the tag would remain with the body and be identified. According to Snopes, the notch is there simply to hold the tag in place on the embossing machine.

Following WWII, the US Navy Department adopted the dog tags used by the US Army and Air Force, so a single shape and size became the American standard. In the Vietnam War, American Soldiers were allowed to place rubber silencers on their dog tags so the enemy would not hear the metallic clanking. Others chose to tape the two tags together with black tape. Still others chose to wear one tag around the neck, and the other tag on the lace of one boot. All three variations were commonly seen among U. S. troops. Prior to the use of Social Security Numbers on dog tags beginning in the 1960s, the military printed the individual's military service (or serial) number. Dog tags are traditionally part of the makeshift battlefield memorials Soldiers and Marines create to their fallen comrades. The casualty's rifle with bayonet affixed is stood vertically atop the empty boots, with the helmet over the stock of the rifle. The dog tags hang from the rifle's handle or trigger guard. Service members also often give them to loved ones before deployments or when dating, similar to the student practice of giving a sweetheart one's letterman jacket or ring to wear.

Also, dog tags have recently found their way into youth fashion by way of military chic. Originally worn as a part of a military uniform by youths wishing to present a tough or militaristic image, dog tags have since seeped out into wider fashion circles. They may be inscribed with a person's details, their beliefs or tastes, a favorite quote, or may bear the name or logo of a band or performer. Some people also prefer to have the information on their tags transferred to a smaller, sometimes golden or silver tag by a jeweller, as the original tag can be considered too large and bulky by some. Some are also used for health problem's such as heart problems, epilepsy, etc.

The Australian Defence Force issues soldiers with two tags of different shape. Number 1 Tag (the octagonal shaped disc) and Number 2 Tag (the circular disc). They are embossed with the title AS, the member's PMKeyS number, initials and name, religion and blood group.

Recently, the U. S. Army stopped using the term "Dog tags", replacing it with "I. D tags". US Forces are also permitted to wear a small religious medallion, usually provided for them, on the smaller chain (e. g. a Cross or Star of David). On Fedora 8, we believe that we have isolated this issue as being related to normal Fedora 8 updates of the following two packages. NSS 3.11 -- NSS 3.12 MOD_NSS us. -- MOD_NSS us. or later Dogtag developers are currently working on a permanent fix for this issue. However, until such time, users wishing to run a TPS subsystem are urged to use the original Fedora 8 GOLD bits available via After this fresh install it is important not to apply any updates that affect either the nss or mod_nss packages. As we believe a very similar problem exists on Fedora 9, we would urge users wishing to run a TPS subsystem install this component on the aforementioned Fedora 8 platform.

The characters created by embossing or engraving are made by removing some of the tag's surface and are not as deep as stamped characters, which are made by stamping the tag with a metal die. Stamped tags are therefore more durable. The most common metals used for pet tags of are aluminum, stainless steel, and brass. Aluminum is the least durable of the three. Plastic chips can be etched or printed, come in many colors, and are often highly reflective to make the dog more visible if it gets loose and runs into the street after dark.

There were also special series for the Officers Reserve Corps (ORC) O us., National Guard O us., Officers (directly appointed from civil life) O us., Officer Candidate School (OCS) O us., and the US Coast Geodetic Survey (Army) Department (prefix K) . For Dog Tags, it should be noted that there are many changes related to wartime shortages of strategic materials, involving manufacturing of these items in monel, brass, steel, stainless steel .

Remark 2. due to the enormous increase in numbers of service men, the War Department was obliged to introduce additional series of digits furthermore some Service Commands inducted more than 1,000,000 men ! Consequently, the W. D. launched a new series of digits for DRAFTEES starting with 4 as first digit, immediately followed by the second digit (indicating Corps Area/Service Command). as a result of this, the Second Service Command received a new series starting from 42,000,000 42,999,999, also the Third Service Command was allotted a new box i. e. 43,000,000 43,999,999, and so was the Fourth Service Command equally provided with another series starting from 44,000,000 44,999,999 ! This explains the introduction of series starting with digit 4 . Lets take a serviceman with ASN us. the first digit 4 points

To a new series introduced for draftees called until January 43, while digit 2 indicates the man originates from the Second Service Command/Corps Area or such as ASN us. from the Third Service Command

Remark 3. towards the end of 1967, the Army announced its intention to drop the use of Army Serial Numbers ! Between 1967 and 1969, before switching to Social Security Numbers, most Identification Tags had both indications, i. e. ASN + SSAN ! Finally ASNs were dropped June 30, 1969, and as such the new data (on Dog Tags) looked as follows. 1st line = SURNAME, 2nd line = FIRST NAME + INITIAL, 3rd line = SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT NUMBER, 4th line = BLOOD TYPE + RHESUS FACTOR, 5th line = RELIGION . Remark 4. about brass Dog Tags. in December 1940, the Army had to make a choice between brass or monel they chose the latter (stronger alloy with brass nickel content) because nickel was on the list of critical items. Brass was used as a substitute standard in mid 1941, but by the end of 1942 due to a large growth of the US Armed Forces, there was a shortage of both brass and monel, and now also brass was on the shortage list of critical items. so the Army had to look again for another solution, by end March of 1942, stainless steel became the substitute material . Although steel was also on the critical list, it was somehow still available in fairly larger numbers (as compared to some other raw materials) for other applications, like Dog Tags ! Because of the continuous evolution in war industry, material shortages of different metals and/or metal alloys appeared on several occasions, whereby the Army still issued smaller lots of steel and monel Identification Tags (quantities still available in some depots), this variety in production only stopped end 1943 early 1944, when production reverted only to stainless steel ! (lets not forget that by May 1945, the Army numbered over 8 million men and women) .

Remark 5. the A. R.C. (American Red Cross) through its millions of volunteers provided comfort and aid to members of the Armed Forces and their families, they served in ZI hospitals suffering from severe shortages of medical staff, produced emergency supplies for war victims, collected blood, money, scrap, and ran Victory gardens, they further maintained training programs in home nutrition, first aid and water safety . Overseas, American Red Cross workers served as Field Directors providing compassionate and moral support for the troops they accompanied, while women mostly operated Clubs Canteens and traveling Clubmobiles (Donut Girls), they acted as social workers and arranged for recreational programs . As nurses they were actively attached to Military Hospitals, Hospital Ships, and Hospital Trains ! Although wearing different uniforms and insignia, A. R.C. personnel did however wear regular Army Dog Tags ! I have not been able to find out whether specific numbers (or boxes) were allotted to the A. R.C., but what I do know is that they used for the second line, prefix ARC, such as ARC 28774 (preceded by first name, second initial, surname + tetanus immunization

Important. in order to enable collectors to trace the origin of some ASN embossed on dog Tags, or encountered on documents, youll find herewith the listing of Army and Corps (later called Service Commands) areas as in use during WWII.

JONES us. can be identified as being a draftee (digit 3) originating from Seventh Corps Area (digit 7), while his folks lived in Colorado (Eighth Corps Area) NOTES. The Quartermaster Corps is charged with the storage and issue of Identification Tags and embossing machines for use therewith the Medical Department is charged with the storage and issue of machines for transcribing entries from Identification Tags - machines for transcribing data from Identification Tags, complete with instruction books, will be issued to such personnel of the Medical Department, as may be designated by The Surgeon general (Circular N°151, 3 December 1940) above was necessary, since the Medical Department was responsible for registration of vaccine inoculation and blood type . It was later extended to include men between 20 and 44. and for non-military service, men aged 18 and 19 and men between 45 and 65 inclusive . War Department Pamphlet 21-13, Army Life, 10 August 1944 states Always wear your Identification Tags . These are considered part of your uniform, and your Officers may ask you to show that you are wearing them at any time on or off the Post AR 600-40, Section III, 31 March 1944 further indicates Identification Tags will be worn by each member of the Army at all times and may be removed temporarily ONLY as the necessities of personal hygiene may require. one Tag to be suspended from the neck underneath the clothing by a 25-inch noncorrosive, nontoxic, and heat-resistant material looped to form a necklace, and the second Tag fastened to the necklace below the first Tag by a 2 ˝-inch extension of material similar to the necklace . The Tags, embossed as provided in AR 600-35, Section VI, will be issued to each member of the Army as soon as practicable after entry into service (War Department Circular N° 262, December 19, 1941, stipulated one Tag to be suspended from the neck underneath the clothing by a cord or tape 40 inches in length passed through the small hole in the Tag, the second Tag to be fastened about 2 ˝ inches above the first one on the same cord or tape, both securily held in place by knots), while FM 10-63, Graves Registration, 15 January 1945 also states one of the two Identification Tags, worn as prescribed in Army Regulations will be attached to the remains when interred . This includes any and all interments in the Theater of Operations the first battlefield interment, as well as the interment into a temporary cemetery for subsequent, final disposition . The duplicate (i. e. second) Tag will be removed at time of interment and attached securily to the grave marker about 2 inches from the top it is also interesting to note that in battlefield burials, when Identification Tags are missing, identification should be made by members of the organization of the deceased . Postive identification obtained should be made of record and a copy of same placed in a canteen, bottle or other container, and buried with the body if one Tag is missing, the remaining Tag will be buried with the body and the grave marker, marked with the name, grade and Army serial number, until a substitute Tag is made in case there is no Tag at all (both are missing), all available identifying data should be recorded on two slips of paper, each placed in a separate bottle or in the most practical container available, and buried six inches below the surface of the ground, centered at the head of the grade (this information is later reproduced on a metal label by means of an embossing machine, and attached to the marker by personnel of the Graves Registration Service) Sources. Dear Spot, LUKE and I just got back from two weeks of service dog training at Shadows for Life in Mansfield, TX. His id tag was ALL the rage whenever we met other service dog teams and trainers! Q. What are the laws that apply to my business? A. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), privately owned businesses that serve the public, such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, taxicabs, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities, are prohibited from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. The ADA requires these businesses to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed. Q. What is a service animal? A. The ADA defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a state or local government. Service animals perform some of the functions and tasks that the individual with a disability cannot perform for him or herself. "Seeing eye dogs" are one type of service animal, used by some individuals who are blind. This is the type of service animal with which most people are familiar. But there are service animals that assist persons with other kinds of disabilities in their day-to-day activities. Some examples include. ______Alerting persons with hearing impairments to sounds. ______ Pulling wheelchairs or carrying and picking up things for persons with mobility impairments. ______Assisting persons with mobility impairments with balance. Q. How can I tell if an animal is really a service animal and not just a pet? A. Some, but not all, service animals wear special collars and harnesses. Some, but not all, are licensed or certified and have identification papers. If you are not certain that an animal is a service animal, you may ask the person who has the animal if it is a service animal required because of a disability. However, an individual who is going to a restaurant or theater is not likely to be carrying documentation of his or her medical condition or disability. Therefore, such documentation generally may not be required as a condition for providing service to an individual accompanied by a service animal. Although a number of states have programs to certify service animals, you may not insist on proof of state certification before permitting the service animal to accompany the person with a disability. Q. What must I do when an individual with a service animal comes to my business? A. The service animal must be permitted to accompany the individual with a disability to all areas of the facility where customers are normally allowed to go. An individual with a service animal may not be segregated from other customers. Q. I have always had a clearly posted "no pets" policy at my establishment. Do I still have to allow service animals in? A. Yes. A service animal is not a pet. The ADA requires you to modify your "no pets" policy to allow the use of a service animal by a person with a disability. This does not mean you must abandon your "no pets" policy altogether but simply that you must make an exception to your general rule for service animals. Q. My county health department has told me that only a seeing eye or guide dog has to be admitted. If I follow those regulations, am I violating the ADA? A. Yes, if you refuse to admit any other type of service animal on the basis of local health department regulations or other state or local laws. The ADA provides greater protection for individuals with disabilities and so it takes priority over the local or state laws or regulations. Q. Can I charge a maintenance or cleaning fee for customers who bring service animals into my business? A. No. Neither a deposit nor a surcharge may be imposed on an individual with a disability as a condition to allowing a service animal to accompany the individual with a disability, even if deposits are routinely required for pets. However, a public accommodation may charge its customers with disabilities if a service animal causes damage so long as it is the regular practice of the entity to charge non-disabled customers for the same types of damages. For example, a hotel can charge a guest with a disability for the cost of repairing or cleaning furniture damaged by a service animal if it is the hotel's policy to charge when non-disabled guests cause such damage. Q. I operate a private taxicab and I don't want animals in my taxi. they smell, shed hair and sometimes have "accidents." Am I violating the ADA if I refuse to pick up someone with a service animal? A. Yes. Taxicab companies may not refuse to provide services to individuals with disabilities. Private taxicab companies are also prohibited from charging higher fares or fees for transporting individuals with disabilities and their service animals than they charge to other persons for the same or equivalent service. Q. Am I responsible for the animal while the person with a disability is in my business? A. No. The care or supervision of a service animal is solely the responsibility of his or her owner. You are not required to provide care or food or a special location for the animal. Q. What if a service animal barks or growls at other people, or otherwise acts out of control? A. You may exclude any animal, including a service animal, from your facility when that animal's behavior poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others. For example, any service animal that displays vicious behavior towards other guests or customers may be excluded. You may not make assumptions, however, about how a particular animal is likely to behave based on your past experience with other animals. Each situation must be considered individually. Although a public accommodation may exclude any service animal that is out of control, it should give the individual with a disability who uses the service animal the option of continuing to enjoy its goods and services without having the service animal on the premises. Q. Can I exclude an animal that doesn't really seem dangerous but is disruptive to my business? A. There may be a few circumstances when a public accommodation is not required to accommodate a service animal--that is, when doing so would result in a fundamental alteration to the nature of the business. Generally, this is not likely to occur in restaurants, hotels, retail stores, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities. But when it does, for example, when a dog barks during a movie, the animal can be excluded. If you have further questions about service animals or other requirements of the ADA, you may call the U. The government-issued identification dog tags, which were routinely issued to all soldiers in the First and Second World Wars, were unknown in the Civil War. Soldiers were concerned that their bodies would not be identified in the aftermath of a battle, so they would often pin a piece of paper bearing their name inside their uniform. Later in the War, various merchants and sutlers (itinerant suppliers who followed the armies, selling directly to the soldiers) began to sell tokens which could be stamped with a soldier's name and unit, and perhaps home town. With a hole drilled on one edge, they could be worn on a lanyard around the soldier's neck or attached to his clothing. Tags like these have recently (July 2007) been sold on eBay for as much as $860.

Many Civil War tags were made from old coins, stamped with the soldier's name - A. B. Miner's tag at right is one example of this kind of tag. George Moore's dog tag (left) was offered for sale on eBay in February of 2002 by Robert Fernbacher, who said in the listing. The 76th New York saw severe action in support of the Iron Brigade at Brawner's Farm on Aug. 28, 1862. There were 32 men killed and 75 wounded. Capt. Grover and two of the skirmishers were wounded. Private Moore found himself in one of the hottest parts of the Battle of Brawner's Farm when he along with 7 other men were picked by Capt. Andrew Grover to be skirmishers. Capt. Grover's men reached a rail fence about 50 yards ahead of the main line where they could hear the commands of the rebel officers in the distance. The skirmishers shouted back the rebel orders to the main line which in turn got relayed to Gen. Doubleday. The skirmishers were caught in the middle of the rebels and main line with firing coming from both sides. An article on Civil War ID tags in

(September 2006) by Joseph Stahlin said that This disk, made by the Scoville Brass Company of New York, was based on the US $10 gold coin of the period. The disk was then in Stahlin's collection, according to the article.

Dog tag for Corporal Samuel D. Squires. Tom Bowen Jr. is the owner of this tag, purchased from Campsite Artifacts. He writes, It is of the common type - (gold washed eagle War of 1861) and simply says Corp. S. D. Squires. He died at Falmouth and this tag was found by a digger in the Falmouth area in 2005. Interesting that the letter p in CORP is a different die letter and about 1/2 size of the other capital letters. It seems the P in the sutlers die set must have been lost and the tiny p was substituted - (this is the size of the th in 76th on the other ID's) It may make identification of future discs more certain, if we see more ones with a small letter P. I looked and none of the existing examples used the letter P.

In today's modern world there's hardly anyone who is not familiar with the pair of silver, oval metal tags worn by soldiers and servicemen both now and in eras past. The common, familiar name for theses identification tags is "dog tag" because of their resemblance to the actual licensing disks worn by dogs (Recently, the army stopped calling the tags Dog tags and adopted the more civilized moniker I. While there are several dog tag formats extant around the world, it's the US Army dog tags form that we are most familiar with. They list the surname, given name, social security number (originally service number), blood type and religion - stamped on small oval pieces of metal that are worn on a metal chain around the neck. The U. S. Army was the first branch to authorize identification tags in War Department General Order No. 204, dated December 20, 1906. The Army altered its regulations on July 6, 1916, and now all soldiers are issued two ID tags -- one to remain with the body and the other to go to the individual responsible for the burial for record-keeping purposes. After WWII, the US Navy Department adopted the same dog tags used by the US Army and Air Force, which led to a single size and shape to become the American standard of today. During World War II, dog tags were first worn by civilians when soldiers often gave them to loved ones before deployment or when dating, very much like the high school or college tradition of giving a girlfriend one's letterman jacket or school ring to wear. Also, in the 1950s, at the height of fears about a possible nuclear war with the USSR, it is rumored that all New York City public school pupils were issued dog tags to identify them in the event of war. In recent years, the wearing of dog tags has found its way into the fashions favored by the younger generation through a style first termed as "military chic". Originally, they were worn as a part of a pseudo-style of military uniform by teens and college students wishing to put forward a tough or militaristic image, dog tags have since gained prominence in broader fashion circles, also becoming popular with celebrities like movie or rock stars and athletes. The tags can be engraved with a person's personal details, sentiments for a loved one, their beliefs or tastes, a favorite quote, or may bear the name and/or logo of a popular band or performer. Like its military cousin, for the longest time identification tags used to aid in finding lost pets were all stamped or embossed on metal blanks which were more or less limited to a finite amount of information proscribed by the size of the embossed letters used on the tags by the machines employed for stamping. In recent years, new materials like silicone, colored metals and plastics and methods of machine or laser engraving have given birth to a cornucopia of fun, new shapes, colors, and methods of engraving for the new materials which have rendered the old stamped tags obsolete. Gone is the day of the boxy, sometimes unevenly spaced letters borne on a silver or gold-colored metal blank which was only available in limited-sized round or oval shapes. In addition to a varied palate of colors like red, green, orange, purple, or even reflective choices like a holographic silver, tags now come shaped like hearts, paw prints, dog or cat faces, and dog houses. It's even possible to find shapes like a skull and crossbones, dog bones, suitcases, stars, t-shirts and the Liberty Bell. Now, anyone can buy personalized id dog tags and can include any type of custom message or design. Unless and until we have identification of the type that can be painlessly injected into the arm, leg or neck of a soldier, we will always have unidentified soldiers.

I agree with Peter Hayward. Although having a full DNA record of each and every soldier will in theory help establish the identity of any human remains, the fact is that if a soldier is "missing" and no "remains" are available..

Disagree with Peter and Marina. @Peter, every Soldier has their DNA on file. Even for Soldiers from earlier eras without DNA on file there has been routine success at identifying remains through the use of relatives' DNA. Also, it is far more likely that a piece of DNA will be retrieved than an injected marker. @Marina, a missing Soldier is not the same as an unknown Soldier. It took us five years to recover SSG Maupin's remains but we never stopped looking and at no point was he considered to be unknown.

In the South Pacific, one of the more hazardous patrols was finding and recovering bodies from the place of a fire fight. The men I served with all said, "Don't risk anybody's life hunting for my body. Let it lie where it fell".

Concur with the comment by the unnamed Soldier at 10.56. War is messy, an ID marker may end up in the missing body part. I agree we are pretty good at forensics now so that if even a body part is found the person can be identified. The problem as Soldier pointed out is finding the body. In World War I, there were hundreds of thousands of unknown and missing soldiers. Some were ours but mostly French, British, and German. Some blown apart by horrendous artillery bombardment. Some were buried alive due to trench cave-ins and ended up missing and never found. In Flanders they say more soldiers drowned in their flooded trenches or as they lay wounded in flooded shell craters than the Navy lost at sea. Most of those bodies when recovered were unidentifiable. In the no-man's-land of Verdun and Passchendale the rats chewed away the faces of the dead and their bones were bleached by clouds of poison gas. As far as DNA, I am not a big fan of keeping soldier's DNA on file. I have a clear picture in my mind of some future politician deciding to use that DNA for nefarious "cost-saving" purposes that could end up doing harm to the soldiers that own that DNA. There are many possibilities for mischief there, too many to list. Lock-boxes are never locked to crooked or even well-meaning-but-misguided politicians. Volunteers from my local VFW post will be placing flags on veteran's graves this weekend. Our small town cemetery does not have the monuments and grandeur of Arlington, but the people at our ceremony will be as solemn as Mr Bush and a lot more so. If you see an old man in a campaign hat selling Buddy Poppies this weekend, he is probably doing it to subsidize sending CARE packages to those deployed to OIF and OEF, or to help defray expenses for senior citizen vets to get back and forth to the nearest VA medical center. Stop and thank him and throw in a few greenbacks to the kitty.

There's an absolutely gorgeous imagined vingette in Dos Passos' _USA_ -- I think at the end of _1919_ -- of a dying soldier disgusted with his fate, hating the possibility that his name on a monumnet might turn into an empty symbol or recruiting device, and hurling his dog tags into the brush so they'd never be able to identify him or abuse his name -- and of course the poor s. o.b. becomes the "Unknown Soldier."

I can't improve on what Mike said, but would suggest that DNA records are too valuable not to collect for identification of casualties. Why not put the DNA info in the hands of the VFW, or some other veteran group?

Can you give me information on the most trusted resource for recovering dog tags. My father Larry Francis Lucas, December 20 1966, Army, MIA now recovered and buried in Arlington. His tags were last located in a village close to the place where his plane crashed. Any resource would be helpful. We are very interested in finding out more about revovering his tags. I have lived in SE Asia for 10 years, some local children in a remote location (without any tourism ) were wearing old dog tags, (there are many war time plane wrecks nearby, an abandoned wartime airfield also) We bought the tags from them, explained why they were so precious and brought them home with us, we are wanting to re-unite the tags with the soldiers, can you help us with this?? In 1994 a tourist to Hue City, Vietnam, purchased more than 1,400 dog tags believing they were from Americans listed as missing in action (MIA). An additional 199 dog tags were acquired in Vietnam in 2006 by a former New Zealand First Member of Parliament with the same belief and a strong desire to return the dog tags to the family of the deceased or missing serviceperson. A check of the dog tags revealed that although none appear to be those of an MIA, most are genuine and were worn by Americans during the war. It's been a while since we've heard any DAP noise from BenQ, perhaps because they've been in the trenches collecting scraps of aluminum-magnesium to piece together their latest MP3 player, the limited edition MusiQ. Etched with two different designs ("steel wings" for guys and something called "magic bean" for girls), the 512MB/1GB player has a built-in microSD card slot and comes with a decorative dog tag and metal earphone chain. BenQ is really pulling out all the stops with this one, as they've already put up a dedicated battle-themed MusiQ microsite (in Chinese). The 512MB player will retail for about $88 and can be ordered via a hotline beginning December 4th or online beginning December 15th. BenQ will also be throwing in limited edition gift sets (metal bracelet and carrying case) at random

Well, looks like the earbuds are Sony MDX series, so they are at least better then most buds I have seen come with mp3 players. So for most people who are not audiophiles or headphiles then they will sound perfectly good for them.

I have a real fetish for ultra-simple shuffle-type players, and this one looks really cool. Unfortunately, the price, marketing blunders, slightly overplayed "bling" factor, and inevitable availability issues will almost assuredly keep my from getting one. Since it's "limited edition, it also means that there's no way that it could compete with the iPod shuffle. If they'd gone with a different marketing strategy, and produced them en masse, they could have pulled it off I think. Pity.

I did not watch any 9/11 movies FLT 93 or WTC by Oliver Stone and I'll never watch any Oliver Stone movies again because he only donate pennies to WTC related charities. Well, I was trying to find one in Beijing and couldn't. Now that I see these pictures (and the infamous ad) though, I can see that it is pretty thick and the plug for the headphones is too apparent, so it really won't look that much like a jewelry accessory or dogtag. Plus, it would be better if you could get a custom plate instead of the company patterns. I would buy it and pay up to a hundred bucks if you could personalize the plate and if it was a little slimmer, with a more discreet plug. They should make one without SD and maybe reduce the memory to 256 MB so it would be slimmer and look more like a real dogtag, as more of a novelty. Its sound probably isn't good enough for serious audiopholes anyway. As for the ad campaign, they screwed up. Not likely they intended to offend their customers.

I have many memories of life in the 1950s. hopefully, most of them are accurate. I treasure my military style dog tag that the New York City Board of Education issued in 1953 or 1954 when I was a student in kindergarten or first grade at P. S. 11 in Woodside, Queens. It was an era in which elementary children walked to school with friends and without parental supervision. I could walk to the supermarket to buy a loaf of bread for my mother. It was something I liked to do, and there were virtually no safety concerns. The Board of Education considered the world beyond the immediate neighborhood and determined that it was necessary to issue dog tags to identify students in case of a devastating bomb attack from Cold War enemies of the United States. Throughout my elementary school life, I experienced shelter drills and air raid drills. I don't think I understood the ramifications, but I obediently followed the teachers’ instructions over the years. We had to practice duck and cover defenses as well as lining up in the halls away from glass that could shatter on us. These activities were just part of the school day. What terrified me were the air raid sirens. I lived about 300 feet from a fire station that operated a siren. It wasn't possible to hide from that noise. My older sister had standing orders from my mother to escort me home quickly if the sirens started up when we were outside. I can still remember watching a short animated "story" on television that I believe was on the Ed Sullivan Show. In retrospect, this doesn't make sense, but it was a long time ago. Ed Sullivan, or the actual person involved, warned parents to send small children out of the room so they wouldn't be frightened by what was about to be shown. I was sent out, but I still watched from a secure position out of my parents’ sight. The movie illustrated what would happen when a nuclear bomb exploded. I can still envision the scene in which sleeping people were melted in their beds. In spite of all this, I had a relatively normal childhood. I am more traumatized by living now in Los Angeles. I was living in Northridge during the Northridge Earthquake in 1994. I was sure that the epicenter was directly under my house, even though local seismologists located it several miles away. My dog tag memento of my early life in New York City is priceless. I'm grateful to still have it after so many years.

Załóżmy więc, że te trzy kompozycje faktycznie nazywają się Mantodea. Tyle z rzeczy bardziej sztywnych i oficjalnych, czas na zagadnienie "namber łan" - czyli muzykę.

Chociaż tak dokładniej zastanawiając się nie jestem wstanie wskazać konkretnego powodu, sprawiającego, iż to właśnie ta piosenka podoba mi się najbardziej. Myślę, że dowodzi to tylko równego poziomu tej EP-ki.

Podsumowując, jeśli nie rażą Was bardziej nowoczesne dźwięki i lubicie takowe granie, możecie śmiało stanąć z Mantodeą w szranki, podejrzewam, że wyjdziecie z tego pojedynku usatysfakcjonowani. Aha, oprawa graficzna niezbyt mnie zachwyciła, ale da się to przeżyć.
