Acceptance Speech, June 2008 Im very proud and humbled to stand here as your new National President. It is such a great honor to follow in the footsteps of all the great ladies who have served before me over the last 80 years. I want to thank all of the Mothers who have given advice. Some of you will remember Katherine Mannion and Mary Teater. they never missed a convention while the were with us. Katherine passed away a few years ago and Mary is with us in body only. Her Daughter tells me each day is new to her and that she is happy in her little world. I treasure the time I had with these wonderful women. I would not be who I am today if it were not for Barbara Calfee my good and devoted friend. She has also been my mentor since we met in Miami many years ago. To my husband Frank I thank you, for he too has given of his time and devotion to the Gold Star Mothers and he has helped me to fulfill all of my dreams. He is doing quite well and he insists that I continue to do what I think is best for the Gold Star Mothers. I am looking forward to working with the new executive board. They are young and have many new and refreshing ideas. It will be this new generation who will bring new ideas to our beloved organization. You have already seen some of the changes, for instance the new newsletter that we have been sending for the past few years. It was the brain child of the new members of the board and I am grateful for their many good ideas. It will be so important for each of us to work together, to be a T. E.A. M (together everyone achieves more). We all have one common goal and that is to make our beloved organization one of the best. Our duty lies with those brave men and women who answered the nations call. As Mothers we will work to help all the veterans families. We are Americas Gold Star Mothers it is our job to hold a hand, wipe a tear, listen to often repeated stories. Its our job to remember our sons and daughters, to remember their patriotism and sacrifice. By giving our all, we too can go ABOVE AND BEYOND that will be my battle cry for the coming year. God Bless each and every one of you and may God keep our troops safe and bring them home to their loving families. Thank you, Georgie Carter Krell ABOVE AND BEYOND Some biographical information about Georgie Carter Krell

A small contingent of dedicated Democrats protested late Wednesday morning against Oregon Republican Sen. Gordon Smith and his stance on the Iraq war. Local activist Ben Talley led Pendletonians Peter Walters and Barbara Wright, who at times lofted signs saying Stop Gordon Smith. A couple of others later joined the hardy band that was part of a statewide action the Democratic Party of Oregon organized to send a message to Smith and voters. The protest lasted from 11.30 a. m. to 12.30 p. m. at Smith's offices in Portland, Medford, Eugene, Bend and downtown Pendleton. [
As Budget Deal Approaches, Families of Servicemen and Women Voice Disapproval of Spineless CongressWASHINGTON - December 14 -- Just before Congress recesses for the year, and days before funding for the federal government is set to run out, Congress is on the verge of making a deal that will involve funding a limited number of domestic issues in exchange for the inclusion of funds President Bush has been seeking to continue the war in Iraq. Members of Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) are outraged with those in Congress who profess to be against the war in Iraq, yet help broker and support a budget deal that continues to fund it. Congress will once again be complicit in permitting an illegal and immoral war to continue unchecked. They continue to buy this war, and now they own it lock stock and barrel, said Nancy Lessin, co-founder of MFSO. She added, Military and Gold Star families who have been speaking out against the war in Iraq are not fooled by Members of Congress who plan to vote against the budget package they have just brokered or allowed to happen. They continue to betray our troops, their families and this nation by facilitating the funding of a war based on lies. [
GOLD STAR OPINION 3900 DEAD US SOLDIERS- KAREN MEREDITH us. On January 1st, 2007 we marked the 3000th dead US soldier in Iraq. Nearly one year later, we mark the death of the 3900th dead US soldiers. 900 young men and women never coming home, 900 families torn apart, turned upside down in 2007.Did you hear this sad statistic on your local news? Unlikely. The AP published a very short story, Forbes picked it up. Not one of the network news affiliates in the San Francisco Bay area covered the story on their websites, not yahoo. com, not cnn. com. Nothing, nada, zip and zero. We did hear about the first families holiday celebration at Camp David. the president gave his wife a silver tray and purse and she gave him a new coat [
GOLD STAR OPINION- A GOLD STAR FAMILY HOLIDAY Amy Branham us. A Gold Star Family is a family who has had a member of their immediate family killed in the line of duty during a time of war. At the time of this writing, there were 3,892 Gold Star Families just since the beginning of the war (or occupation) of Iraq. In my group, Gold Star Families Speak Out, we also include the families of those men and women who have taken their own lives. So, just how does a Gold Star Family celebrate the holidays? The answer is most of us do not. At least not for the first couple of years. [
The war in Iraq has killed 4,000 Americans after five years of fighting. Every one of those war deaths is a blow to the heart of family members. In Benicia, the gold star in an apartment window has faded, a bit, during the past three years, unlike the love of a mother who still mourns her lost son. I see his picture every morning and every night when I go to bed. He is still with me, said gold star mother Shamma Shumney. .
5 years ago, we didnt knowThe sorrow the painTears falling like rainThe heartache and sadnessRips through us like a bulletWe only have to remember 5 years agoWhen you where still hereAt the time it seemed clearThe scars of war are sometimes hard to seeNo one knows what goes on inside of meHonor and courage, heroes indeedMy brother, son, daughter, nephewPeople we need!
GOLD STAR OPINION- EASTER 2008 KEVIN JOYCE LUCEY us. On this day as we celebrate Life and the Resurrection, there are so many of us bearing the burdens of loss, grief and bewilderment - and some of us who even struggle the struggles with faith and hope. The timing of this year's Easter coincided with the fifth anniversary of the war. our son's 27th birthday and with the rapidly approaching formal 4000th casualty of this war - the true number of casualties being so much more than the formal numbers indicateThe timing also collided with Bush's ineffective reasoning and rationales for the war which appear to be forever changing - but finally appearing to be finally reflecting with our son's opinion for their launching this war. the oil.and Cheney's disdain for the American people [more]

The Gold Star medal is a special insignia that identifies recipients of the title "Hero" in the Soviet Union and several post-Soviet states. From 1934 to 1991 it was associated with the title "Hero of the Soviet Union". Since the demise of the Soviet Union, that title has been replaced by successor titles and insignia in some of the now-independent states, such as "Hero of Belarus", "Hero of the Russian Federation" and "Hero of Ukraine".
The Gold Star was established by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on August 1, 1939. Previously, Heroes of the Soviet Union were awarded the Order of Lenin and a special diploma (gramota, грамота) describing the heroic feat. The medal was introduced to distinguish these heroes from other Order of Lenin recipients. The Gold Star was not normally issued for posthumous awards of the title "Hero of the Soviet Union". The medal is a gold star hanging from a rectangular suspension device with a ribbon in the color(s) of the issuing state (red for the USSR, white/blue/red for the Russian Federation, blue/yellow for Ukraine, red/green for Belarus). It is worn on the left side of the chest above all other orders and medals. The title and medal are awarded for combat feats and extraordinary achievement in exploration endeavors, so eligibility is open to military servicemen and civilians alike. Non-combat awards include.
Marshal Zhukov received four. During the Cold War, cosmonauts routinely received the award. As the Soviet Union did not acknowledge its involvement in the Korean War for many years, some awards for that conflict were initially presented as late awards from World War Two. Soviet intervention in Afghanistan and the war against the mujahadeen produced awards for combat operations in the 1980s. The title and medal lost some prestige when Soviet leaders after Josef Stalin began awarding themselves Gold Stars. The most notorious and dubious "Hero" was Leonid Brezhnev, who accumulated fifteen hero titles over his lifetime.

But on October 11, 1918, George's wife in Chicago received a box marked Effects of deceased Officer 1st Lt. George Vaughn Seibold. The Seibolds also received a confirmation of George's death on November 4th through a family member in Paris. On Sunday, December 15, 1918, nine days before Christmas Eve, the following obituary appeared in the Washington Star newspaper. Lieut. G. V. Seibold Killed in ActionBattling Aviator, Recently Cited for Bravery in France, is War Victim. Lieut. George Vaughn Seibold, battling aviator, cited for bravery in action some time ago, lost his life in a fight in the air August 26, last. His father, George G. Seiboldhas been officially notified of his sons death by the War Department. Lieut. Seibold was a member of the 148th U. S. Aero Squadron. He was first reported missing in action, though a number of circumstances led to the fear that he had been killed. Hope was sustained until now, however, by the failure to receive definite word. George's body was never identified. Grace, realizing that self-contained grief is self-destructive, devoted her time and efforts to not only working in the hospital but extending the hand of friendship to other mothers whose sons had lost their lives in military service. She organized a group consisting solely of these special mothers, with the purpose of not only comforting each other, but giving loving care to hospitalized veterans confined in government hospitals far from home. The organization was named after the Gold Star that families hung in their windows in honor of the deceased veteran. After years of planning, June 4, 1928, twenty-five mothers met in Washington, DC to establish the national organization, American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. The success of our organization continues because of the bond of mutual love, sympathy, and support of the many loyal, capable, and patriotic mothers who while sharing their grief and their pride, have channeled their time, efforts and gifts to lessening the pain of others. We stand tall and proud by honoring our children, assisting our veterans, supporting our nation, and healing with each other.
On May 28, 1918, President Wilson approved a suggestion made by the Womens Committee of the Council of National Defenses that, instead of wearing conventional mourning for relatives who have died in the service of their country, American women should wear a black band on the left arm with a gilt star on the band for each member of the family who has given his life for the nation. The Service Flag displayed from homes, places of business, churches, schools, etc., to indicate the number of members of the family or organizations who are serving in the Armed Forces or who have died from such service. Service flags have a deep Blue Star for each living member in the service and a Gold Star for each member who has died. Thus, the gold Star and the term Gold Star Mother, as applied to mothers whose sons or daughters died in the World Wars, has been accepted.
Often the question has been asked, Who is a Gold Star Mother? During the early days of World War I, a Blue Star was used to represent each person, man or woman in the Military Service of the United States. As the war progressed and men were killed in combat, others wounded and died of their wounds or disease, there came about the accepted usage of the Gold Star. This Gold Star was substituted and superimposed upon the blue Star in such a manner as to entirely cover it. The idea of the Gold Star was that the honor and glory accorded the person for his supreme sacrifice in offering for his country, the last full measure of devotion and pride of the family in this sacrifice, rather than the sense of personal loss which would be represented by the mourning symbols. On June 4, 1928, a group of twenty-five mothers residing in Washington, DC, met to make plans to organize a national organization to be known as American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., a nondenominational, non-profitable and nonpolitical organization. On January 5, 1929, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. The Charter was kept open for ninety days. At the end of this time they had a membership of sixty-five, which included mothers throughout the United States. North, South, East and West. There were many small groups of Gold Star Mothers functioning under local and state charters. When these groups learned of a national organization with representation in nearly every State in the Union they wished to affiliate with the larger group and many did so. This group was composed of women who had lost a son or daughter in World War I.
American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. is registered in the United States Patent Office, Legislative Branch of the United States Congressional Library and the United States World Book Almanac. The original copy of the Federal Charter granted to the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. was placed in the Archives of Congress. The lineage of the NDSU Gold Star Band can be traced back to 1904 when the late Dr. C. S. Putnam organized a military band to perform for functions of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). The band acquired its Gold Star designation from the many superior ratings earned during annual ROTC federal inspections. William Euren, a protege of Doc Putnam, assumed the band directorship in 1948. During his 20-year tenure, he guided the transition from a traditional military band to that of a polished concert ensemble. Euren began the tradition of annual concert tours in the United States and Canada. Roger Sorenson served as director of bands from 1968 to 1970. Orville M. Eidem was director of bands from 1970 to 1993. During his tenure the band program continued to grow and flourish in all areas, including a new standard of excellence for the jazz program. Upon Eidem's retirement, his assistant, Wayne F. Dorothy, became the director of bands until 1999, when Warren D. Olfert became director of bands. To learn more about the band's history, click here.
We welcomed in a record number of exhibitors and crowds to the 2008 Iowa Gold Star Arabian Horse Futurity over Labor Day Weekend. The barns were full of some of the finest Arabians and Half Arabians from all around the country. Stall count was at an all time high of 590. 2008's Progressive Barn Party was the biggest and best one to date!!Food was available in the Horse Barn, Cattle Barn, AND Vendor Barn. Our 2008 Live Stallion Presentation also stepped it up a notch by introducing RFD Television star - Tommy Garland - who carried our flag during the opening ceremonies. We had 34 stallions participate in the Thursday night live presentation -- the most stallions we've ever had perform in one night. After the presentation, Midwest hosted the DA Valentino party at their stalls and did private showings of Valentino at that time. On Friday the Gold Star hosted the prestigious Magnum Psyche Futurity with Vico Rocco, Bob Boggs, and Mr Las Vegas -- Wayne Newton as judges. The room was PACKED with spectators! We had Channel 13, Fox News, KCCI Channel 8, RFD TV, and PBN all out with cameras filming all the activities on the fairgrounds. Radio stations were also advertising our event across the midwest. Our purebred stallion auction completed the weekend by breaking all previous records and topped $380,000.00 in bids. That total, added to a record final total for the Partbred Auction threw the complete total over $400, us. If the excitement of the stallion auction wasn't enough -- the fun atmosphere of the Pirate costume party added to the fun as well as our Capt Jack entertainer!! We had many guests show up in boots, bandanas, eye patches, and dreadlocks. The Gold Star Girls outdid themselves as the Red and Black pirate wenches. This was a three day party that will stay in our memories for a long time!!
Because the star does not have a magnetic field, however, scientists have been left scratching their heads over what causes the clouds to form. for the time being, then, no one really knows where these things come from. I wonder, though, how far this "weather" metaphor really goes. are there storms, and hurricanes, and tornadoes? Is there actual convection up there, in the outer atmosphere of Alpha Andromedae, and, if so, is there ever precipitation – frozen mercury snowing down toward the star's core on slow currents of helium gas? While we're on the subject, I'm also curious if there are any religious systems that use "hurricanes of mercury" as a kind of divine threat. You will be struck down by a hurricane of mercury. After all, aren't Mormons worried about being consumed by "hurricanes of fire"? In which case a hurricane of, say, argon – or a tornado of germanium – isn't all that much of a stretch.
Or perhaps a hurricane of transition metals could come blowing in over the islands of Stockholm, coating that city in a smooth new shell of mineralogical forms.2) Meanwhile, some stars are apparently plated in gold."Scattered through space," we read, "are some peculiar stars that seem to contain more gold, mercury and platinum than ordinary stars such as our Sun." These stars are referred to as being "chemically peculiar."
In other words, "the heavy metals in the star were pushed outwards by the radiation pressure of the star's ultraviolet light, but were kept from escaping by gravity." On chi Lupi, for instance, there is a shell of mercury in the "stellar photosphere."Thin outer layers of gold can thus be found on this and other "chemically peculiar" stars throughout the universe.
3) Finally, we've all heard about things like this before, but "one of the largest and most luminous stars in our galaxy" is also "a surprisingly prolific building site for complex molecules important to life on Earth."The discovery furthers an ongoing shift in astronomers' perceptions of where such molecules can form, and where to set the starting line for the chain of events that leads from raw atoms to true biology. That "true biology" can be tracked back to the stars is nothing new. but the fact that a star called VY Canis Majoris – "a red hypergiant star estimated to be 25 times the Sun's mass and nearly half a million times the Sun's brightness" – is burning with pre-biotic compounds, "including hydrogen cyanide (HCN), silicon monoxide (SiO), sodium chloride (NaCl) and a molecule, PN, in which a phosphorus atom and a nitrogen atom are bound together," is apparently reason to get excited.
First, let me quickly say that I love – love! – the idea that biologists might someday study stars in their quest to understand the chemical origins of molecular biology. and, second, I'm curious if we could combine these three articles – asking. could storms of living matter form on the outer surface of a star, reaching hurricane strength as they blow in whorls and vortical currents across gold-plated skies? The first astronomer to discover a living storm should win some sort of prize, I think.
But there's good news for we living creatures. the "ejected material" that later seeds fledgling solar systems with prebiotic compounds also "contains clumps of dust particles that apparently shield the molecules and can shepherd them safely into interstellar space."Note the "shepherd" metaphor. Anyway, this all seems to suggest "that the chemistry that leads to life may be more widespread in the universe and more robust than previous studies have suggested."
I like the little pamphlet in with the hymnals in the pews at First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City that explain the dogma of our neighbors' faith. Proper Mormons get to on to become 'gods of their own worlds' in their afterlife, besting most of the speculative fiction that I've read in the past 47 years. I prefer the "We Are All Star Stuff" idea such as this one articles and photos, thanks.
Looks like I've been picked to be the tour guide, here. Sorry Geoff for the threadjack.@Em. Our scriptures speak of God living near the star Kolob. And there's no word on where that is. Sorry to burst the bubble of intrigue. For folks who are interested in cosmologies, though, Mormon cosmology is certainly worth a gander (the Wikipedia article is a nice gloss, but could be much much longer).@Alexander Trevi. The Salt Lake temple interior is very much reflective of religious architectural motifs of the period, but without a nave, transept, or other cathedral-like spaces. There are several stories, each with many rooms. Some are large and are for formal worship, others for quiet reflection. Whereas most of Christian architecture is meant to underscore man's nothingness compared to deity, LDS temple architecture is meant to underscore man's status as children of God. Which means there are no large, cavernous spaces with soaring ceilings. Most rooms are proportioned like the rooms in homes (albeit rather nice homes). Here are some photos from 1912. After the recent restoration work, the Church commissioned and published many photos of the interior. but I can't seem to find them. But as a resident of Salt Lake City, I've had the chance to worship in the Temple, and it's lovely. The palette (which you can't gather from the B&W photos) is white, soft pink, pastel teal, and cream — with gold leaf throughout (Here's a link to the official Church portal on temples). The Granite Mountain complex is just up the road in the Cottonwood canyon area. and storing important documents in the temperate climate of a cave (natural or man-made) is hardly new or uncommon. Here's a good article on the controversy surrounding proxy baptism on behalf of Holocaust victims. by way of casting the practice of proxy baptism in the proper light (every religion's ordinances fit within a particular, and often cohesive world-view. trying to discuss them outside of that context is difficult), I'd say this. we believe that all must be baptized who wish to receive exaltation. proxy baptism is a way for families to pave the way for their ancestors by doing the necessary legwork and then allowing the ancestor to accept or reject that work, as they wish. A poor (but workable) analogy would be purchasing tickets for one's ancestor to an important event, and leaving them at will-call. If we're all to live with each other in the here-after, such acts of service (in the Mormon worldview) by folks on behalf of their ancestors are meant to help the two parties bond on a personal level. Moving on.We're walking, we're walking. @Steve. If children aspire to become like their parents — and parent aspire for their children to become like / better than themselves, it shouldn't be a surprise that our Heavenly Father wants us to be like Him (inasmuch as it is possible).. anyway. Mormon doctrines are as complex and intriguing as most other belief systems. and hardly lend themselves to proper treatment in such a confined and linear medium as this. Bet this never hits the TV news! Gold Star Mothers is an organization made up of women whose sons were killed in military combat during service in the United States Armed Forces. Recently a delegation of New York State Gold Star Mothers made a trip to Washington, DC to discuss various concerns with their elected representatives. According to NewsMax. com there was only one politician in DC who refused to meet with these ladies. Can you guess which politician that might be? Was it New York Senator Charles Schumer? Nope, he met with them. Try again. Do you know anyone serving in the Senate who has never showed anything but contempt for our military? Do you happen to know the name of any politician in Washington whose husband once wrote of his loathing of the military? Now you're getting warm! None other than the Queen herself - the Hildebeast, Hillary Clinton. She refused repeated requests to meet with the Gold Star Mothers. Now - please don't tell me you're surprised. This woman wants to be president of the United States - and there is a huge percentage of the voters who are anxious to help her achieve that.
Had been in Washington visiting Senate offices. The only office that refused to meet with the Gold Star Mothers was none other than Sen. Hillary Clinton,
Quoted above took the invective to an ever higher level, maintaining that Hillary Clinton was not just the only senator who wouldn't give the Gold Star mothers the time of day, but the "only politician in DC who refused to meet with these ladies" (obviously a gross exaggeration, since two women couldn't possibly have visited every politician in Washington, and just calling upon every senator would have required them to visit one hundred separate offices). The incident referred to in the NewsMax. com article took place on
The American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., deeply regret the misunderstanding about Senator Hillary Clinton. The two mothers who visited Washington did not have an appointment with the Senator and she was not in her office on that day. We would appreciate it if the
Letter to Senator Clinton drew no response, the two Gold Star mothers made the comments that formed the basis of the NewsMax. com article. As the Albany Times Union later reported, though, their complaint was primarily prompted by their reaction to a receptionist in
It got blown out of proportion, in a way," Gold Star Mother Shirley Jones said of a flurry of nationwide carping about New York's junior senator after Jones made a few offhand remarks about her organization's reception at
Said she and another mother were disappointed when they stopped by Clinton's office to lobby for legislation to provide annuities for Gold Star parents and weren't even given a few moments with a staff member. She said Clinton's receptionist seemed oblivious to Gold Star Mothers, the Vietnam War and the losses American families suffered because of it. Clinton's office is apologetic about the slight, saying the senator's temporary basement office was understaffed during her first months in office and the staff has since reached out to communicate with Jones about the legislation.
At the time this allegation was made Senator Clinton was not even in her office. These allegations were not initiated by the Gold Star Mothers that Senator Clinton would not see them. This is a fabricated report picked up by an individual using the Gold Star Mothers as an instrument to discredit Senator Clinton. Four Gold Star Mothers and a Vietnam veteran made an appointment with Senator Clinton at a later date and were very well received. Photographs were made with Senator Clinton and she presented each one with a signed proclamation paying tribute to the American Gold Star Mothers. We regret any embarrassment this may have caused Senator Clinton and her staff and would like to move beyond this issue and continue the positive volunteer work which we willingly and graciously provide for the veterans and their families and support of other Gold Star Mothers. American Gold Star Mothers are a strong group of women who have sacrificed sons or daughters in conflicts to preserve the freedom that we enjoy. We do not need mischievous gossip and unfounded lies to promote our organization. Please help stop it now.
An expanded version of the "Hilary snubs Gold Star mothers" screed appeared on the Internet months after the original. In it, another anti-Clinton diatribe that debuted in cyberspace in November 2000 was teamed with the Gold Star incident of May 2001. The expanded

To most the site is but another construction nuisance to be left in the rearview mirror, amid a cloud of dust. Few realize that the ceremony marking the opening of the original bridge in 1933 caused over 5,000 people to march from downtown Sidney there to pay tribute to a group that always pays the ultimate sacrifice in wartime, but is now largely forgotten. the Gold Star Mothers. Many will remember this Veterans' Day on November 11 at the bridge, when the new structure is rededicated, and the surviving Gold Star Mothers recognized. This is the story of the Mothers and how the bridge came to bear their name. When the battlefield sounds of The World War (as World War I was then known) faded away, numerous veterans groups such as the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars were organized to commemorate the memory of those who had died in the great conflict. Formed of those who survived, these groups honored their comrades in arms routinely on such occasions as Memorial Day and Armistice Day. The healing process for them had begun. For another group, the broken hearts would never heal.
The banner was small, but the star was large, The color of a blue, night sky. She hung it in the window with trembling fingers And tried hard not to cry. He was so young to go far away As all soldiers have to do. She knew that danger Lurked everywhere, As she touched the star of blue. The weeks went by, the months rolled on She knew he would not die. Her faith in God held her head up high. In her heart she sang a song. But the battles raged. The news was not good Why did so many have to die? She was cold, And she felt terribly old As the day came that she faced with dread. When a knock on the door Shattered her life evermore, And the blue star turned to gold. Esther B. Home Recording recently sat down with noted engineers Stan Ross, Dave Gold, and Larry Levine of L. A.’s famed Gold Star Recording Studios,
It was just another day of greatness at Gold Star Recording Studios on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. Jules Siegel, Goodbye Surfing. Hello God. 1967 Kid, you’re going out there a nobody, but you’re coming back a star, is the classic show business cliché, and for 33 1/3 years, Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios founded by David S. Gold and Stan Ross breathed life into that phrase for hundreds of major artists. Between 1950 and 1984, Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochran, Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, Sonny Cher, Buffalo Springfield, Duane Eddy, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, The Ronettes, Dick Dale, The Righteous Brothers, Iron Butterfly, Herb Alpert The Tijuana Brass,
The Runaways’ Joan Jett and Cheri Currie, Meat Loaf, The Champs, The Baha Marimba Band.even Alvin The Chipmunks among dozens of others, all had their first introduction to the art of recording at the trailblazing studio that changed the course of modern music. Located in the heart of Hollywood, Gold Star Studios’ efforts encompassed the entire entertainment industry and threw open the doors of unbridled creativity to music, film, television, radio and Broadway artists and impresarios such as Frank Loesser, Johnny Mercer, Sammy Fain, Dimitri Tiomkin. legendary West Coast Jazz artists such as Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Oscar Moore, The Hi-Los and the classic swing bands such as Louis Bellson’s. As the recording ‘home’ of ABC-TV’s first prime-time Rock Roll Show ‘Shindig’. Gold Star Studios hosted virtually every major pop artist of the 1960s. And for established artists like Bobby Darin, The Who, The Monkees, The Band, The Go Go’s, The Ramones, The Association, Art Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Tommy Boyce and others. Gold Star Studios provided safe creative harbor, an opportunity to revitalize flagging careers, explore new sonic territories free of ‘bean-counter’ constraints or to pay homage to Gold Star’s rich heritage still reverberating in the walls of Gold Star’s ‘perfect’ echo chambers - the walls in The Wall of Sound. And most importantly. Gold Star between 1950 and 1984 generated more National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Songs of the Century and Grammy Hall of Fame winners than any other independent studio in America. Combining David S. Gold’s custom-designed and hand-crafted technology with Stan Ross’ relentless creativity and groundbreaking approach to recording as an art form, Gold Star Studios pioneered or gave the first popular exposure to recording techniques and effects that define modern music. from the first platinum album to such now - commonplace audio effects and techniques as phasing, flanging, automatic double-tracking and others. Before they were two of modern music’s most esteemed geniuses, Dave Gold and Stan Ross were two plucky, street-smart kids who overcome almost insurmountable odds to build their dream studio - gleefully hoodwinking Hollywood’s tight-knit songwriting community in the process. Unencumbered by major record label restrictions, Gold Star’s freewheeling recording-is-art’ approach ultimately changed the course of modern music and modern recording studio design while wrestling America’s recording capital crown from New York, Nashville and Memphis. Featured in hundreds of books, hit films, documentaries, accredited college courses and magazine articles. Gold Star Studios pioneered the single most important innovation in 20th Century music. what Sir George Martin called the recording - studio - as - instrument concept. In the 1950s, recording equipment and console technology was primarily designed for radio or television uses and available through professional audio contractors. Today, entry level, semi-pro and professional recording technology and software is as far away as your nearest music store and is as essential a tool for songwriters, composers and musicians as pens and paper. Today, entry-level musical instrument, amplification and effects technologies routinely incorporate the sounds and effects that shocked listeners and revolutionized the entertainment industry decades ago when they first appeared on Gold Star recordings. Today, recordings from Summertime Blues though Pet Sounds through End of the Century still resonate today with listeners of all ages because two brilliant, upstart Los Angeles kids in 1950 envisioned the future of music - and made it happen at Gold Star Studios. Welcome to the website that celebrates the epicenter of modern music. Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios - where hundreds of hungry young artists and esteemed ‘elder statesmen’ all captured their Days of Greatness!
* David Gold created the effect and in some respects the idea that culminated in the creation of Alvin The Chipmunks, which is why the ‘father’ was named ‘David’. * As a teenager, Stan Ross studied recording from a pioneer of modern disc recording - Bert B. Gottschalk. * Unlike virtually every other studio in the western world, David personally designed and hand-crafted the technology on which the classic Gold Star and ‘Wall of Sound’ recordings were recorded. * Stan innovated a custom filtering effect that allowed Rosemary Clooney to ‘duet’ with her recently deceased sister during the filming of her 1980s biopic. * The ‘Wall of Sound’ was the sound of walls and David’s pioneering flexible recording console designs. Gold not only designed the chamber, but personally hand-crafted the acoustical wall coating. The legendary Gold Star ‘perfect’ echo chamber was the result of years of painstaking experimentation and actually survived the March, 1984 fire that destroyed Hollywood’s most famous and influential recording studio. * Although recorded at a rival studio, Stan Ross was called upon to salvage what later became one of the most important songs of the 1960s - For What It’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield - when the band was unable to come up with a satisfactory performance . Stan fashioned a ’drum’ from a guitar wrapped in paper supplemented by a kick drum played by hand. It worked. Stan approved the final mix and, after two failed singles, Buffalo Springfield finally had a career.
* David’s innovative studio designs were later appropriated by other studios - including Herb Alpert’s AM studio B. Gold Star was one of the very first ‘compact’ studios that followed the logic of efficient sound reproduction rather than the conventional cavernous record company studios designed to accommodate big bands and orchestras. * One of Stan’s earliest field recording assignments was for then -Congressman Richard M. Nixon’s infamous ‘Pink Lady’ campaign. * David personally recorded Ronald Reagan’s promos with the stars of each weeks show for four seasons of the historic ‘General Electric’ TV broadcasts at his ranch, Universal or his home. GE Theater and his speaking engagements were a training ground that led to Reagan’s first successful run for California governor and then President. * Stan once produced a hit record by utilizing the controls to ‘follow’ a bandleader who was teaching a melody to the various assembled musicians prior to the actual session. * After he attained stardom, Neil Young insisted on David Gold personally mastering all of Neil’s solo albums to ensure the highest quality sound reproduction. * When The Champs were unable to complete the B-side to a recording, Stan improvised a new arrangement on the spot and gave them their one and only hit. “Tequila”.

Our History In 1965, the four Daoud brothers were embarking on a fast food journey that would soon embody the Great American Dream of owning a successful business. Working odd jobs and attending college, the brothers scraped together $1,200 and combined it with cash advances on vending machines to buy their first restaurant, Hamburger Heaven in Mt. Washington. Included with the restaurant was a recipe for Cincinnati-style chili. With much tinkering and reformulating of the recipe, the brothers settled on what has become one of Cincinnati's classic tastes. To this day, the spice blend is a closely guarded secret that remains within the family. The brothers renamed the restaurant Gold Star Chili and opened two additional restaurants within a year responding to the chili's popularity. From the beginning, the Daoud brothers worked hard to put Cincinnati on the map with Gold Star Chili. They created a product to exacting specifications and perfected its preparation. By the time the Cincinnati Reds were world champions in 1976, there were 21 Gold Star Chili locations. The year the Bengals went to their first Super Bowl there were 48, and in 1989, Gold Star opened its 100th location. In 1995, Gold Star Chili celebrated its 30th anniversary and in 1999 Gold Star Chili, Inc was named Small Business of the Year by the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. Also in 1999, Cincinnati Magazine crowned Gold Star Chili the winner in an independent blind taste test conducted by five star chefs among Cincinnati style chili chains. Today Gold Star Chili continues to be a favorite location to enjoy the Cincinnati chili tradition and can be found in Cincinnati, Dayton, Middletown, Hamilton, Northern Kentucky, Lexington, and Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Gold Star also operates concessions at Paul Brown Stadium, Children's Hospital, and the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. It is the patronage of our customers and the hard work of our franchisees and associates that have helped make Gold Star Chili successful. The Daoud families thank you.
Nelson Algren wannabees flock to Gold Star Bar, like moths to a flame. While Tuman's sold out and a more upscale breed of lounge has moved in, Gold Star Remains one of the original Bohemian dives along Division Street. What's so special about it? Nothing, really. Well. perhaps it's the laid-back feel to the place, the alleged presence of ghosts that creates an eerie fascination, or perhaps the cheap beer and indie juke. My bet's on the latter, but most likely it's a combination of all of the above. It might help to know these things about Gold Star prior to going there, as it doesn't look like much from the outside (and that might be an understatement). To begin with, Gold Star is not to be confused with the Gold Star Sardine Bar, which used to be a cabaret and jazz club on Lake Shore Drive in the once ominously numbered 666 N. LSD (later re-numbered 680 to increase its real estate value). Instead, the Gold Star Bar is housed in a red brick three flat next to a liquor store (on the corner of Wood Street), and across the street from Phyllis' Musical Inn. There is a mid-century style neon sign that I have never seen lit, so the Gold Star Bar may be a little difficult to find at night. This sign is actually a holdover from the days when there used to be a hotel above it, of ill repute. The faade is primarily comprised of black-painted plywood with Gold Star written in gold, cursive script surrounded by stars. It looks like a child of five may have been commissioned to paint it. There is also a gold star in the sidewalk, reminiscent of a Hollywood square there are even a few seedy people hanging around out front just like everywhere in Hollywood. Never mind those butterflies in your stomach as you step through the plate glass door encrusted in glass blocks as you'll find a rather sedate environment that is not at all unwelcoming. In fact, it has the same surprising warmth found at other dark, gothic neighborhood bars in the area like the Inner Town Pub, Rainbo Club and the Charleston. Inside, you'll find a golden hue and all the dcor of an old Chicago neighborhood joint. ancient wooden floors, a high, green-painted tin ceiling, scuffed white and red-painted walls, and a worn wooden bar that extends halfway down the room on the left side. Behind the bar are more gold stars, a neon Point Beer sign, a few trophies and a gargoyle above the bar. The latter of which is probably to ward off the spirits (some evil?) that have been felt and, some say, seen in the bar. Don't worry we'll get to the ghost stories a little later. The open space behind bar used to house a grand piano but now allows the bartender to roam around.
Here at the bar, the beer is cheap. How cheap? Let's just say it would be about half the price of what the House of Blues charges. The place is so cheap that I once ordered two Budweisers and got two Old Styles. I'm pretty sure the bartender heard my order. Perhaps the small neon Budweiser sign in the tiny front window had been a little misleading. There's no kitchen at Gold Star, but you might be able to snag some free popcorn or be blessed by the nightly appearance of the Tamale Guy. Across from the bar, the walls are adorned by frameless works from local artists, beyond which is a seating area comprised of green plastic lawn chairs around formica-topped tables, and a small pool table in the back surrounded by three tattered couches and an ancient cigarette machine. There is also a jukebox that offers an impressive array of punk and alternative favorites, including Tom Waits, Naked Raygun, Sam Cooke, Buzzcocks, David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust, of course), Clash, Jesus Lizard, Radiohead, MC5, and Black Flag. This area used to be the residence of the old Polish woman that ran the bar from the 1930's until 1990, until the bar changed hands and the wall was knocked out. The crowd at Gold Star is a mix of old regulars and young, alternative newcomers to the area. Everyone seems to wear somewhat scruffy clothing to match their hairstyle. Many of the younger types are the newest generation of Bohemians, including writers, artists, actors, web designers, bike messengers, and others that cannot yet afford a place in Lincoln Park or prefer life on the edge in the Ukrainian Village. Gold Star is a good location for Bohemians as it lies between the Chopin Theater and the Myopic Bookstore, the latter of which is open for night owls until 1.00 a. m. It may be a bit of a stretch, but one could draw a comparison between Gold Star and McDaids of Dublin, circa the 1940's and 50's when it attracted cutting-edge literati like Brendan Behan and Patrick Kavanagh. Gold Star was even the site of the 1995 Chicago Underground Press Conference Underground Press Conference, remembered by Marc Spiegler. Gold Star seems blissfully devoid of pretension, but I do get the feel that there are a few alterno-poseurs here and there. While the place does not look it at all, Gold Star does get pretty revved up in football season. Evidence of this is the aging Green Bay Super Bowl Champions banner with yet another gold star painted on it, hanging from the ceiling. As you may of guessed, the bar is unfortunately owned by Packers fans. Will's Northwoods, eat your heart out!
Also in attendance at times are a few ghosts. Before we get into that, one must understand the history of the area. As Lee DeVita points out inBarfly's Guide to Chicago's Drinking Establishments (2000), For the first 50 years of the 20th Century, much of West Division Street was settled by Polish immigrants. During Prohibition, Division Street was known for speakeasies, whorehouses and gambling dens. After Prohibition, many of the speakeasies turned into Polish polka bars and the whorehouses and gambling dens continued on. While gambling doesn't appear to have factored much in Gold Star's past, the bar did evolve into a cross between the speakeasy and whorehouse it was during Prohibition. it became a bar with a hotel above it. The hotel was actually a place to visit with teenage Polish girls, for a fee of course. Apparently, the bar still gets a few inquiries for those in need of these things today. Hell, the antique key-rack still hangs to the left of the front door, where the room keys once hung. This was the height of Polish Broadway and the heyday for the Gold Star Bar. The bar was sumptuous, with an, interior of an ornately-wallpapered and lavishly-furnished pub, according to Ursula Bielski in her book
Good times did not follow in the 60's, and Gold Star suffered a similar fate to the Green Mill in Uptown. Polish Broadway became full of gin mills, hookers, addicts, and often lethal brawling in the street. While regentrification has taken hold of much of the area, some of this legacy continues. I once heard of an incident in the mid-90's that occurred in front of one of those old-school, liquor store/dive bar combinations, where two old immigrant men got into it over a woman. The argument devolved into a violent kafuffle, in which one of the men almost decapitated the other man with a knife, killing him. OJ would be proud. Chicago Bar Project fan and former Wicker Park denizen, Cowboy Tim recalls. It wasn't a decapitation. It was a good ol' fashioned THROAT-SLITTIN'. Two men in their late 60's or early 70's got into a fight over some stupid hooker, and one of them produced a MACHETE (no less) and slit the throat of the other, right there on the sidewalk. The bloodstains remained on the sidewalk for months and months afterward -- testament to what happened and the fact that nobody takes any care of that fuckin' neighborhood. Nobody cleans up in front of their property 'round there. Perp was arrested and charged with 1st-degree murder. This was all over the local news at the time, too -- most upsettin' to my mother ('Oh, my God -- isn't that right down the street from the apartment you're about to move into?'). Oh, and in the interim, I've managed to reach into the deep recesses of my enormous mind to recall the name of the stinky taproom in front of which the crime occurred. Cut-Rate Liquors, in the 1600 block of W. Division St. Local townsfolk casually renamed the joint 'Cut-Throat' immediately followin' the incident. MU-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!
The neighborhood is better today, but one should always be careful and keep an eye out in this area. Sadly, as part of the recent regentrification, the polka clubs have been swept away along with the gin mills, whorehouses and gambling dens. However, for those of you wishing to get down to Roll out the Barrel, there's still the Baby Doll Polka Club on the South Side. The Gold Star has had its share of violence in the past as well a legacy that lingers with the bar today, even though its violent episodes appear to be a thing of the past. As pointed out by Bielski,. a number of hot-blooded killings are reported to have taken place here over the generations, including the one that occurred in the 1950s, when a previous bartender shot a would-be holdup man in the tavern's front doorway. Susan Stursberg, an employee of the Gold Star for nearly ten years, has long felt a degree of discomfort in this area of the bar, whether opening or closing up for the night or socializing in the vicinity. She has also wondered from time to time about strange movements in her peripheral vision. A visiting psychic. pointed to a presence in the bar's front doorway-the site of the murder. The ghost of a girl in a lime green dress and a man in a straw hat have also been reported by Gold Star patrons and staff to have been there one minute and gone the next.
Gold Star is kind of like Cheers except even if everybody knows your name, nobody really gives a shit.
While the Gold Star may not be as interesting today as during its heyday during, and immediately following, Prohibition, there's still enough to keep you interested between the patrons and supernatural. Still, I'm sure that Nelson Algren, the working-class novelist of the 20th Century and former resident of the area, would be happy to see the Gold Star frequented by neighborhood types, he probably wouldn't object to the yuppie newcomers as they do not seem to have spoiled the atmosphere. One might argue that they compliment it quite well, even. Or, maybe I'm just biased because the old regulars might view me as one of those damned yuppies. Whatever the case, head over to Gold Star for a Bud er, I mean Old Style and a ghost story. Afterwards, head over to Myopic Books down the street to pick up something by Nelson Algren or Steven King. Boo!

A series of 3 posters as part of an advertising campaign for the Israeli Goldstar beer. Each poster shows an iconic flowchart that depicts the subtle differences between men and women, in particular in terms of making decisions in the context of toilets, relationships or clothing [adsoftheworld. com]. Karl, thank you for being willing to see that there may be alternate opinions. WRT PC and items like the Godstar posters, if I don't know the lady in question when I'm first speaking to her, I am the perfect gentleman (English sense of the word) until I figure out where she stands on PC (anal-retentive versus the fun end of the PC spectrum). I then follow her lead. I know that there's three ladies at the office who would break up and laugh until they cried if they got the images, two that would smile and give me an eye-roll and another three that I woun't pass them along to because... One of the basic rules of advertising is "know your audience". Taking items out of their context and target audience makes for interesting conversations and lots of PC. Think of George Carlin's "Seven Words" and his subsequent monologue on the use of the four-letter "C"word that refers to a rooster or male bird vesus the gutter-slang for the male appendage. The word in and of itself, the word is absolutely innocious, but when you put it into a context (add the word "sucker"), you'll have problems.
Many of you are missing something VERY significant in this ad. This beer is an Israeli product. We know that fromn the Hebrew on the beer mug. There is a prayer in orthodox Judasim said only by men that basically Thanks God that he was not born a woman. Then look at the slogan next to the beer mug - Thank God I'm a Man. This statement is HIGHLY offensive to practicing Reform and Conservative Jews that believe in religious equality of women. Orthodox Judaism does not allow women to participate on an equal basis with men. There is NO WAY I would ever buy this product if I were in Israel.
In May 1918 President Wilson approved the suggestion of the Women's Committee of National Defenses. It recommended that American women should wear a black band on the upper left arm, adorned with a gold star. Each star representing a family member who had given his or her life for their country. This was suggested in lieu of conventional mourning attire. The "star" tradition began in WW I when white Service Flags were displayed from homes, business, schools and churches to indicate, by the use of a blue star, each active service member in the U. S. Military. A gold star stitched over a blue star showed the nation those who had given their lives for their country and the devotion and pride of those left behind. This tradition continued through WW II. In his Letter to the Women's Committee by Pres. Wilson the term "Gold Star Mother" was first used. The Gold Stars not only signified the supreme sacrifice made by the deceased, but intended to give their family a measure of pride and consolation. June 4th, 1928 was the day a group of 25 mothers in Wn DC made plans to begin a national organization to be known as American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. It was to be a nonpolitical, nondenominational and nonprofit organization. Incorporated on Jan 5, 1929, it had 65 charter members from all areas of the U. S. As recently as June 12, 1984, the ninety-eighth U. S. Congress granted the GSM, Inc. a Federal Charter. A list of purposes and provisions are listed, to include general promotion of peace and good will in. assisting veterans and their dependents in the presentation of claims to the V. A.. perpetuating the memory of those whose lives were sacrificed. giving lessons of patriotism, love of country and respect for the country's flag to local communities and to extend assistance to all GSM. This organization was and is open to all mothers of fallen soldiers of all wars as well as those who have died a service-related death. Presently GSM groups give support to their local veteran's hospitals in many ways and help with and attend veteran's ceremonies. They have their own license plate available, monthly meetings, annual conventions, and are eligible to live at the group's complex, American Gold Star Manor in Long Beach, CA. The last Sunday of September has officially been declared GSM day. Upon the death of a son or daughter, the U. S. Gov't provides the mother (and often the other family members) a small gold-star pin. Betty Spengler, a resident at The Fairfax in Alexandria, lost her son in Viet Nam. She said, "You always have your memories that are there--especially during the Holidays." My mother-in-law, Julia Magruder, also a GSM lost her youngest son in Vietnam while all three of her sons were serving. She shared the following. "My receiving the gold star was a satisfying and proud remembrance of the son it stood for. The smallness of the pin creates a very personal relationship when worn. It signifies so much."

Hope I've done it some justice, though..)
Aryland's schools won another gold star this week when the College Board reported that the state ranked first in the percentage of high school seniors scoring well on the Advanced Placement tests, which entitle students to college credits at many higher-education institutions. The accolades will surely please state school officials, who have touted the progress the state has made in recent years. But like similarly upbeat assessments of state graduation rates and student achievement levels last month by the journal

Gold Star Mother was the name conferred on mothers and widows of WWI and WWII military personnel who made the supreme sacrifice during the wars. My wife's great grandmother, Lena Goldberg, lost a son, Israel Goldberg, in WWI. Here is her GSM medal. Sgt. Goldberg was killed in the First Battle of Marne while in the Third Division of the US Army.
In 1930, Mrs. Goldberg was one of the GSM, and leader of the Yonkers NY contingent that visted the graves and battle sites in France. An interesting side note, that the medal and trip were before WWII started that WWI was called THE WORLD WAR in the documentation that came with the medal. Here is the medallion that she wore during the trip to France.
And what's the transit connection? The Staten Island Ferry had a boat in the 1937 series named Gold Star Mother, in honor of the nations GSM's.
