Cute. Two years ago, my mom decided to make pillows with the Dominican flag in time for the Dominican Day parade in NYC. The flags cost $2 each, she bought large pillows at the 99 cent store. She made about 50 pillows and sold them for $10. They were a big hit.

My family received a flag when my father-in-law passed away as a veteran over 10 years ago. We flew the flag at our home until it started to wear from exposure. I would like to keep this flag as a memento rather than burn it. Would it be appropriate to make a throw pillow for each of my in-laws with this flag? Etiquette rules say you cannot use it for wearing apparel, bedding or drapes, but my purpose would be more for display (and each family member could have a special memento of their father). I don't want to offend anyone, but I don't want to burn this special flag. Thanks.
Dear M, This is a tough question, but I commend you for your thoughtfulness. In regards to your question, the Flag Code (Title 4, Chapter 1) seeks to ensure that the flag shall never be displayed in any fashion except as a flag.this would exclude its use as a throw pillow. Another possible means to preserve this special memento would be to have it properly folded (into a triangle) and displayed as such.special cases can be purchased or made for this purpose. If you are dead-set on creating the throw pillows, this could be possible provided it is done in the context of destroying the flag. The method for destroying the flag is generally to cut it into its constituent parts (the star field seperate, then each stripe). While the most common method for destruction is burning, it only stipulates that it be done in a dignified manner. If these parts (stripes and star field) could be used in a dignified manner and displayed as such (not used as functional pillows!), then I feel that this could be considered as acceptable. The preferred method, however, would be to display your flag folded as mentioned above. Thanks for your question!

TEMPE, Ariz. If you want a pillow and blanket in coach on US Airways, it's going to cost you $7. US Airways said Thursday it will begin charging for its "Power-Nap Sack" on Feb. 16. It's following the lead of JetBlue Airways, which announced a similar policy last summer. Airlines are adding fees on checked luggage and now pillows and blankets to raise more money as they battle a downturn in travel caused by the recession. US Airways reported that January traffic fell 6.2 percent. Kevin Jackson, a marketing official for Tempe-based US Airways, said selling the pillows and blankets "is a natural extension of our 'pay for what you choose and use' model we began rolling out last year." Jackson said the sleep kit was an affordable way for passengers to increase their comfort while flying. The kits include a 34-by-60-inch fleece blanket, a neck pillow, eye shades, foam ear plugs and a $10-off coupon for items in the SkyMall catalog. They come in a fleece drawstring bag embroidered with the airline's logo. The airline said it will stop handing out free pillows and blankets in coach on domestic flights. Customers in first class and in Envoy and Economy class on trans-Atlantic flights will continue getting complimentary pillows and blankets. The kits won't be available on US Airways Express. For customers who can't wait until Feb. 16 for their own US Airways-embroidered nap kit, the company said they went on sale Thursday at the airline's Web site.

Twenty-seven years later, in June 2004, Dan was invited to a reunion of his former comrades-in-arms in the nation's capital. His wife, Christina, accompanied him after first offering him the option of reuniting with his buddies alone. "No," he said. "I want you to come. I don't want to live in the past. I want to live in the present and look to the future." The two of them couldn't have known that that trip would eventually lead to the Patriotic Pillow Project, now a full-time calling for Christina. Part of that visit to Washington included dinner at Fran O'Brien's, a swank downtown D. C. restaurant that opens its doors to wounded veterans of the global war on terror on Friday evenings, treating them to a free dinner and the chance to reacquaint themselves with the world beyond the war. Neither Christina nor Dan will ever forget that night visiting with what she calls "our healing heroes." The Finns spent the next two days visiting with wounded vets at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here. When it was time to go home, they both felt like they had to do more. Christina remembered well what it was like when her husband returned from Vietnam. He and his fellow soldiers, she said, received no recognition, honor or praise. She didn't want that to happen to these new heroes. Christina said she wanted them to know just how much America admires their courage and appreciates their willingness to defend freedom. The need to do something more was amplified by the fact that the Finns' own son, Ryan, now serves with the 1st Calvary Division in Iraq. Over the Christmas holidays in 2003, Patricia volunteered to help the local USO welcome home returning veterans at Chicago's Midway Airport. There she met a stranded vet who was forced to spend several days at the airport before he could catch a connecting flight home. Her heart went out to him because the best she could offer him was a raggedy pillow someone had dragged off a plane. Relating the story at her own son's going-away party the following May, a long-time friend of the family who worked for United Airlines said, "Well if its pillows you want, I can help, but you'll have to find a way to make covers." Patricia did, recruiting volunteers to stitch cover replicas of the very thing they were defending -- the American flag. And the Patriotic Pillow Project was born. The pillow project quickly became a family enterprise, with the Finns youngest son, Shawn, becoming the project's webmaster. Their daughter, Heather, a business student, helped with marketing and fundraising. And Christina left her job as an operating room nurse at the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital outside Chicago to devote all of her time to the project. A segment highlighting the project on the Fox News Channel brought volunteers from around the country and donations to help with materials and shipping. United Airlines donated 1,000 pillows, and more than 500 covers have been stitched since June 2004. Working eight hours a day, a group of volunteers that jokingly called themselves "No Sweatshops" cut the material, created the quilted American flag covers, and assembled and shipped the finished products to wounded veterans at Walter Reed and military hospitals in Maryland and Texas. And the effort is appreciated. One veteran whose parents, coming to take him home, tried to pack up the pillow with his other belongings said, "No, don't take that. It fits perfectly under my head - and it's the best thing that I've ever gotten." On March 10 and 11, the Finns made their fourth visit to wounded veterans in the Washington area, making stops at both Walter Reed and the National Naval Medical Center, in Bethesda, Md. With them were 178 handmade pillows constructed by volunteers from across the country. One of the patients the Finns visited at Walter Reed was a former student at the Carver Military Academy in Chicago, where Dan works as a special education coordinator. The wound he suffered in Iraq when an improvised explosive device took off most of his foot is similar to the injury Dan suffered in Vietnam. Before Finns left Chicago, all the teachers at Carver Academy autographed the pillow, adding handwritten messages of love and support. As they departed Walter Reed, the Finns left more than 75 pillows to be distributed to patients they did not have time to see and to any new arrivals who might come before they have a chance to return. During their visit to Bethesda the day before, the Finns also met with several patients and left about 100 pillows to be distributed later.
“Mr. LIPINSKI. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor Daniel and Christina Finn, founders of the Patriotic Pillow Project, also known as Operation Comfort. Daniel T. Finn is a Vietnam veteran who proudly served his country during the years of 1966 and 1967. Upon return to the United States, Mr. Finn received a teaching degree and currently teaches at Carver, the Nation's largest public military academy in Chicago. Christina Finn serves as a medical health professional. In this career, she has observed that the healing process includes both emotional and psychological healing, as well as physical repair. For this reason, when Dan and Christina's oldest son was deployed to Iraq, the Finn's founded the Patriotic Pillow Project This project lovingly and respectfully collects pillows to send to wounded GIs to lift their spirits and honor the recipient. United Airlines and an organization called C. A.R. C. in Chicago have provided the pillows. Then, anyone who can stitch a straight line and follow the pattern provided is encouraged to handcraft a pillow cover. The pillow covers are quilted replicas of our Nation's Flag. Since September 2004, the Patriotic Pillow Project has received 4,350 pillows and delivered more than 2,350 finished gifts of gratitude. This is quite an accomplishment for a project that started out as a single page document distributed to friends and various organizations. It is my honor to recognize Dan and Christina Finn, founders of the Patriotic Pillow Project for their many achievements in supporting our heroic American GIs.”
Senator Garcia's statement is as follows. “I also rise to introduce a special guest which will be part of my statement. In the east Gallery is a lady by the name of Christina Finn. She's the founder of the Patriotic Pillow Project from Oak Lawn, Illinois--a little bit more about that in a moment. She, I believe, is also here with her son Shawn who is a student at Moraine Valley studying computer science. If they would please stand up and we can recognize them. The reason they are here and the reason I recognize them is because Ms. Finn is part of a project known as the Patriotic Pillow Project, which is a project that is worked on on behalf of wounded veterans. What I would like to do is read a very brief tribute that recognizes her work. I will talk a little bit more about it. It says, That it is with great pleasure that we join in offering praise and tribute to Christina Finn for her hard work and dedication to developing the Patriotic Pillow Project. This honor recognizes an individual who has done a great deal on behalf of wounded veterans throughout the country. The Patriotic Pillow Project or Operation Comfort is a charitable national community service project that collects and distributes patriotic pillows along with heartfelt greeting cards to disabled veterans throughout the nation. The pillow cases are handmade to show our nation's veterans how much their courage and willingness to defend our freedom is appreciated. The quilted pillow cases are created by volunteers and are designed to resemble the American flag. To date, over 1,000 pillows have been sent to military hospitals across the country. IN SPECIAL TRIBUTE, Therefore, This document is signed and dedicated to Christina Finn for her tireless work with the Patriotic Pillow Project and to recognize her heartfelt commitment to our country's heroes. Twenty-seven years later, in June 2004, Dan was invited to a reunion of his former comrades-in-arms in the nation's capital. His wife, Christina, accompanied him after first offering him the option of reuniting with his buddies alone. "No," he said. "I want you to come. I don't want to live in the past. I want to live in the present and look to the future." The two of them couldn't have known that that trip would eventually lead to the Patriotic Pillow Project, now a full-time calling for Christina. Part of that visit to Washington included dinner at Fran O'Brien's, a swank downtown D. C. restaurant that opens its doors to wounded veterans of the global war on terror on Friday evenings, treating them to a free dinner and the chance to reacquaint themselves with the world beyond the war. Neither Christina nor Dan will ever forget that night visiting with what she calls "our healing heroes." The Finns spent the next two days visiting with wounded vets at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here. When it was time to go home, they both felt like they had to do more. Christina remembered well what it was like when her husband returned from Vietnam. He and his fellow soldiers, she said, received no recognition, honor or praise. She didn't want that to happen to these new heroes. Christina said she wanted them to know just how much America admires their courage and appreciates their willingness to defend freedom. The need to do something more was amplified by the fact that the Finns' own son, Ryan, now serves with the 1st Calvary Division in Iraq. Over the Christmas holidays in 2003, Patricia volunteered to help the local USO welcome home returning veterans at Chicago's Midway Airport. There she met a stranded vet who was forced to spend several days at the airport before he could catch a connecting flight home. Her heart went out to him because the best she could offer him was a raggedy pillow someone had dragged off a plane. Relating the story at her own son's going-away party the following May, a long-time friend of the family who worked for United Airlines said, "Well if its pillows you want, I can help, but you'll have to find a way to make covers." Patricia did, recruiting volunteers to stitch cover replicas of the very thing they were defending -- the American flag. And the Patriotic Pillow Project was born. The pillow project quickly became a family enterprise, with the Finns youngest son, Shawn, becoming the project's webmaster. Their daughter, Heather, a business student, helped with marketing and fundraising. And Christina left her job as an operating room nurse at the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital outside Chicago to devote all of her time to the project. A segment highlighting the project on the Fox News Channel brought volunteers from around the country and donations to help with materials and shipping.
