Happy New Year my dear sweet blog friends! I was cleaning the studio yesterday (I know, *gasp!*), and I came across a bunch of lingerie bags from a while ago when I offered them on my site. I think I pulled them a year ago.they didn't sell well (read. at all), and while it might have been a good idea, perhaps not a good product offering. In the year since, I've used them in many ways other than their intended purpose. Turns out, they are the perfect size for shoes, and work well when traveling. They are also a fabulous project bag, especially now that I am knitting and have a few things going at once. They are also quite easy to make, and that is what I want to share with you today! To start, you'll need about a 1/2 yard of fabric, folded and about a 36 piece of twill tape or ribbon (plus, thread, scissors and.a sewing machine.duh.). I'm using a lightweight linen here. I've made a simple pattern with a 12 x 18 piece of posterboard. Place the posterboard directly on the fabric with one edge on the fold. Trace pattern directly onto fabric, and then cut out. You'll end up with a long rectangle of fabric when open. If you are using a plain fabric (like I am here), you can easily embellish the bag later with embroidery, stencils, patchwork or little die-cut pieces of fabric. I think I'll add some fun die-cut fabric pieces. I found some simple shapes online and printed them out to make a little pattern, and then cut them out of some fun fabric. (Not shown. I also used the die-cut patterns to cut out a piece of double-sided interfacing to help adhere the die-cuts to the linen later.) Put these aside for now. Next, take your main fabric, open it, and with the wrong side facing you, press the top 4 inches of the sides in. That's not articulated very well, but check out the photo above and below, and do like that! You don't have to measure with this project, just eyeball it. Do this on all four corners/sides. Then, press down the two top edge pieces about 2 inches from the top. You could serge this if you want, I did not. Next, sew this piece down about 1/4 from the cut edge. Then, using your sewing machine guide, sew across again with a 3/4 seam allowance. By doing this, you are creating a little tube for the drawstring. Next, remember your cute embellishment? Now is the time to attach it. If you are using a die-cut piece of fabric, first adhere it to the right side of the fabric with lightweight double-sided fusible interfacing. You can then embellish it further with embroidery - I whipstitched around the bra bikini shown above (but forgot to take a picture of it! sorry!). Then, turn the piece wrong side out, matching up the top pieces, and begin stitching the sides together below the last horizontal stitch line. You can start at the 1/4 seam allowance guide on your machine, because that turned in portion at the top will end, and you will continue at 1/2 seam allowance down the side of the bag. *Just remember not to start at the very, tippy top of the bag or your won't be able to insert your drawstring! If you'd like, you can clip the bottom corner of the bag. Then turn it right-side out and press. Take your twill tape or a piece of ribbon and attach a safety pin. insert it into the second opening at the top and pull it through to the end. Then, insert it into the other side and continue pulling it through. Make a little knot at the end so that little guy doesn't go anywhere. Cinch it tight, and you are done! Oh, look. Now I have three new utility bags! A lingerie bag, a shoe bag, and (*slaps forehead*) a knitting project bag! I know which one I'll be using! I hope you try this! Contrary to my super anal instructions, it's very, very, very easy! Enjoy!

Every bag from the collection looks fantastic. The bags hit the store on Dec 28th, so Im going to make sure I have some money left over after all my Christmas shopping. The above bag is the one I have my eye on for a new everyday commuting bag. I almost bought the original version from HH a few years ago when I was on the look out for a light weight bag. Now Im glad I waited. Heres hoping the pocket situation in the Target version is the same as the original version. PS how fantastic is the Sonia Leather jacket? UPDATE. I just checked the Target website and the Hayden-Harnett bags are availble to order! I placed my order for the sure to be fabulous Canvas Flight tote in Purple/Gold and I threw in the Thakoon Zip Back top in Ebony/Purple for good measure so I can pretend to be Michelle Obama. Ill probably swing by my local Queens Target after New Years to check out the rest of these collections in person, but I wanted to get my order for my Must Haves in ASAP since both collection are sure to be flying out of stores.
Posted on | December 18, 2008 | 3 Comments I was pretty impressed when I saw the images for the Anya Hindmarch bags for Target and tried to purchase one this past fall when Target had a number of pop up shops in Manhattan for Fashion Week. Sadly the pop up shop was so mobbed I didnt even see any of these bags, let alone have a chance to purchase one, and after that I gave up. So imagine my suprise a few weeks ago when I paid a visit to the Target in Queens Center and saw a whole rack of these beautiful bags. I went with the smaller bag and was finally able to give it a trial run last weekend and was quite impressed. The bag was the perfect size for wallet, make up, phone and keys and I liked the magnet on the front flap. Although it came out a little plasticky looking in the above phones, the pleather on this bag in person looks much more luxe with the gold trim and gold Anya logo. Better late then never with this bag.

Ive never owed one, or really seen anything that caught my eye until my beloved Nancy Botwin on Weeds started carrying around a beautiful slouchy hobo Lucky Bag. So of course now I want this bag so I can be just like Nancy (minus the selling pot part). UPDATE. I do have this bag! Before I even had a chance to post this entry I happened to pop into the Filenes Basement on Sixth Ave and there was Nancy Botwins bag in a black and white patchwork pattern. It was love at first sight and I bought it for far less than the listed price. So far it is a great bag with my only complaint being that it only has one pocket in the inside. (I know I sound like a broken record on the pocket thing, but seriously why cant designers get this right?) Posted on | September 9, 2008 | 2 Comments So I took the summer offof wearing heels. Although I have some cute strappy summer sandals my feet just couldnt do. Besides summer weather means dressing more casual, so I had some of my trouser pants tailored for flat shoes and I threw my summer heels into the back of my closet! I happily discovered that flats with a bit of patent leather details looked sleek and fancy instead of frumpy and boring!
A college student, I started two different totes. Unfortunately, I ran out of the colors I wanted to use, and unwilling to wait for grocery day to get some more, I decided to do something small in one of the other colors I had. Since today was one of the first warm, *beautiful* days of the year, I figured I needed some sandals, so I whipped these up.I just improvised the pattern, but I think they came out all right! I have *no* idea how useful they will actually be as shoes (or more like sandal-slippers, really) but Ill see how they hold up outside. They seem fairly sturdy, though Im really wondering if theyll melt on hot pavement. Guess Ill find out! Tute! I really just winged it, but hopefully I can explain the basics well enough. I made my yarn according to these instructions. using strips about 2 inches wide. Then, for my foot, size 7 1/2, I chained 14 loose stitches on a size K hook. I started by doing scs in the first half of the stitches, then I did hdcs for the next half. In the last stitch, I crocheted 5 or 6 hdcs to start making the round toe. Then, I continued around and stitched into the the backs of the chains, using hdcs in the first half of the stitches, and scs in the second half. This is to make the front part of the shoe is a bit wider than the heel. I continued with that general pattern in a spiral, increasing stitches a few times around the curves, enough to make it lie pretty flat. In the final ring, I used mostly scs, except for hdcs around the heel and around the big toe to make them a bit larger (note. I also tried making these with dcs, which shaped them nicely, but the material ended up a bit too open and floppy.) I ended my spirals after going around the toes, so I think up toward the top of my foot it was 8 rows wide, and toward the heel only 7 (and I mean rows of crochet, not spirals--so I think it was 3.5 times all the way around? I have fairly narrow feet, so you may need to adjust that.) Of course, for the left and right foot, you need to slightly change the positioning of the hdcs and scs, so that the big toe is in the right place. For the front strap, I finished my spiral in just about the right place, so I began a strip across that was 2 stitches wide, then connected it to the other side when it was the right length to fit my foot. I did the same for the other straps. I never actually cut my yarn, I just made flat stitches around the edge of the shoe until I was in the right place. The rear strap was 7 stitches behind the front strap on the inside of the foot, and 5 stitches behind on the outside (the front strap is at a diagonal to match my toes). I started the heel strap on the second row up on the rear strap, which let it rest just below my ankle bone. For my feet, the front strap was 9 rows long, the rear strap was 13 rows, and the heel strap was 10 rows, but you can just fit it to your own feet. I made the straps a bit tight so that they would fit well after natural stretching. Oh, and each shoe took between 10 and 15 bags to complete. I forget exactly how many, but the nice thing about the bag yarn is that you can always easily add more. So, does that make any sense at all? If not, I can try to start another pair and write an actual pattern, but I expect itll require a lot of altering anyway, just because we all have such different feet! If any (or all?) of that was confusing, feel free to ask questions. I know basically nill about crochet, so if I can do it, so can you! Good luck! Id love to see them if you make a pair
