Of course fat in America is a relative thing, what with the Super Size servings so rampant in this country. Since when did a helping of pasta actually equate to an entire one-pound box of Barilla spaghetti? Even little old Italian grandmothers whose reputations ride on overfeeding their families won't pile on a plate that high. But at your average chain restaurant these days, that's what you get. a whole lotta food. Last month we went to a Brazilian churrascurria for my in-laws' 50th anniversary dinner. For them it was a little trip down memory lane, as they spent several years living in Rio de Janeiro. For us, it was the express bus ride on the binge-eaters' superhighway. I would hazard a guess that while residing in Riohome of that tall and tan and young and lovely girl from Ipanemathe in-laws didn't gorge themselves quite like we all did at that all-you-can-eat mutton palace. While bands of waiters wielding meat-laden skewers milled about our private dining area, guests helped themselves to a McMansion-sized salad-and-sides bar that could easily have fed a refugee camp for a month. I was sufficiently repulsed by the toddler who grabbed a baseball-sized marinated mozzarella ball from a serving bowl. After squishing it in his germ-infested palm for a minute, he reconsidered and returned it to its rightful place, for the next sucker to place it on his or her plate (and possibly contract the fat virus). That was at least 150 calories that wouldn't go my way. But I made up for it, and soon my plate over-floweth(ed). As we returned with plates a-groaning to the dining room, a sort of Vincent Price-esque Gothic room with rich, vermillion walls (alas, reminiscent of the carnage that probably occur in the kitchen, what with all the animals they must butcher each night), I suddenly noticed the mirrors. Now I realize from a decorator's standpoint, mirrors are a great ideathey create an expansive feeling even in a small room. But this room was overrun with ceiling-to-floor mirrors, something that doesnt exactly lend itself to shoveling food into your mouth, when you know every time you look across the table you'll see none other than yours truly stuffing your own pie-hole. But this place had a clever little trick. the mirrors were all slimming, placed at a clever angle so as to easily remove 15 pounds from one's appearance. So even while we were committing gluttony to the point of nausea, we'd catch glimpses of ourselvesour unusually thin selvesand feel practically justified in going for that third helping of black beans and rice. Because hey, we look so darned good in the mirror! Nature is a fickle mistress, isn't she? First she throws a vengeful little fatso virus at us, so that no matter what we do, we pork out. Then she enables us to foolishly trust that we look fine, because the enormous mirrors suspended at a strategic angle tell us we do, even if a cursory check downward argues differently. But I have faith that a skinny virus must be just around the corner, and I'll go searching for itmaybe not even wiping the handles of the shopping carts with wet wipes, so as to encourage catching it. As I write this the skies are dark and heavy and the first flakes of snow are whirling around, tumbling to the ground. There is the promise or do I mean the threat of much more of to come later in the day and tomorrow. This being England, where we dont deal well with snow and ice, there will probably be major disruption on the roads and things will grind to a halt or be heavily delayed until it all clears again. I could think how horrible it is. How much I hate winter and how dark and cold and usually wet a month February is, the month that my mother always used to call February fill-dyke or fill-ditch because of the way that, as the nursery rhyme goes,
However, in good news, blue hands or not, Ive got a brand new Blaze out for February, Under the Influence. When a workaholic management consultant on assignment in a laid back surfing town on the California coast walks into a restaurant/bar one night in February shes so clueless she doesnt even realize its Valentines Day until she notices the place is crowded with romantic twosies and shes the only onesie in the place. Except for the sexy bartender known locally as Hot Johnny. With no place to sit, she ends up at the bar and the two develop an instant attraction. I really love opposites attract stories, and the truth is that I met the real Hot Johnny in a coast side surfing town. How could I not write about him? Of course, my Hot Johnny is entirely fictional but I did borrow the name. I also made full use of him for background info and I got some insight into how a bartender goes about inventing a new cocktail. RT gave Under the Influence 4.5 stars and a Top Pick.
Ive had some. There was the day Harlequin advised they wanted to buy my first book written for them (I remember the time, date, weather, etc in perfect detail)! On a smaller scale, recently with time running out before my daughters formal (a little like a prom) we ventured out after her last exams and found the ideal dress that made her look a million dollars, at a price I could afford, within half an hour! Ive just been blessed with another once in a lifetime experience, the sort I know Ill carry with me the rest of my life. I spent December with my family travelling in Europe, visiting friends we havent seen in years, seeing familiar places we love and exploring new ones. It was the sort of trip you dream of. We didnt miss any of our connections. We didnt lose either luggage or kids. We stayed on friendly terms through the whole month (which, lets face it, can be a real test when travelling). Our hotels were terrific. Our friends as lovely as we remembered and almost every day brought a wonderful new experiences to be treasured. As Australians who rarely see snow we were thrilled to have it sprinkle on us just as we walked into a walled, cobble-stoned medieval town to visit a traditional German Christmas market. We had a sparkling bright day in the Alps when we went for a horse drawn sleigh ride. We stayed in an oasthouse, a half-timbered hotel that was 550 years old, a castle perched high above vineyards and villages, and in rooms right next to the Seine in Paris. We got the last tickets to a Royal Shakespeare Company production in London, were invited to a Christmas concert in the private chapel of a German schloss and had a day in an old-style farmhouse in the Bavarian Woods. Above all, we were welcomed, not only by our friends but by strangers as well. The woman in the incredibly upmarket chocolate shop in Paris who positively beamed when I sneaked in and used up my whole store of French (about four words) to buy chocolate truffles. The bus driver who circled back to drop us where we needed to be. The host of our tiny hotel in Bavaria who farewelled us with chocolates and a bottle of bubbly. Being able to share it all with my family was the best thing of all. Sharing those smiles and those experiences was a tremendous gift. Plus, I have to say, Ive now got one or two exciting ideas fermenting for future stories, inspired by places we visited. You can see how inspired I was, staying at a fairytale castle!
After I am done reading, I have to put all the little people into a box and give them a sharp talking to, turning them back to their bigger selves the next day. "No more little people! I say.
January seems like a time when things that are NEW are good. New presidents, new diets, new goals. So I thought I would tell you about some of the new writers that I know are going to be coming up in the next few months that Ive fallen in love with and that I think you will too. We started the year off with a bang with two authors that I just cant get enough of, for COMPLETELY different reasons. Josh Bazell is super hilarious and his debut novel BEAT THE REAPER seems so well conceived that its like hes already secretly written ten novels and has just deigned to give us this one perfect one. Also, hes in medical school which makes me feel quite lazy for JUST having a regular job. How does he do it? Regardless, he did and I thank him for it. If that wasnt enough, youll just have to view this video for yourself so you know how great the book will be/is.
Also this month is a novel that you will devour called THE LITTLE GIANT OF ABERDEEN COUNTY, a novel about a girl named Truly who grows physically and emotionally beyond her small town's wildest expectations. I havent been as astonished by a debut since I read GODS IN ALABAMA by Joshilyn Jackson.
I also have to just mention that another debut author, Michael Shilling, wrote a super fun book about a rock band in decline called ROCK BOTTOM and has an amazing website where the songs by the band are covered by other bands. Youve got to listen to them. In February we are publishing GALWAY BAY which is a novel that has been in the works for many years. The story is loosely based on the authors immigration experience from Ireland to the US which seems so timely right now that we have entered an age where the son of an immigrant is our president.

Today I'm offering some back story, a peek into the world (and the family) my grandmother was born into. It reads like the start of an historical romance to me. One that may or may not have a happy ending. I hope you enjoy it. Note. my grandmother had a habit of scribbling notes all over her photographs. At least when she wasn't scissoring out people she no longer liked. Part 1 can be found here. Part 2 can be found here.* * *Once upon a time, lets say around 1900, a little girl named Elsie Isobel lived in a big house on a hill. The house was called Sea View and it was situated in Litherland Park, a section of Liverpool, England. ("Bootle" is also scribbled on the back of the photo.)Elsie lived there with her mother Ellen, her father Charles, her brother Cass, and her sister Edith, and the entire Dimler clan. They didnt live there long. A few years later Charles sold his daughter Edith to childless relatives and used the proceeds to move the rest of his clan to New Zealand where they would find fame and fortune. Grandma El didn't know exactly why he had to leave England so abruptly but the whispers said it was because of a woman. "He was a divil of a man," she used to say with a twinkle in her eyes. "A real charmer." Which was code for the fact that Great-Grandpa Charley didn't much pay attention to the fidelity part of his wedding vows. Here's my great-grandfather Charley who died in New York City in his 47th year. Personally I think he looks like trouble. Together they were a scary group. I dont mean to give you nightmares but here they are, circa 1890, before Elsie and her siblings were born.Theyre my ancestors and they scare the hell out of me. They look like Victoria and Albert . . . and the kids they didnt talk about. See the young couple on the left in the picture? Theyre my great-grandparents, Ellen and Charles. Elsie's parents. They are newlyweds in this photograph. Take a good look at Ellen, please, and tell me if thats the face of a happy young bride. I dont think so either. See the man and woman next to Ellen and Charles? Theyre Charless parents, George and Barbara, the owners of Sea View. Family lore has it that George died in the bed of the dairy farmers daughter and the servants lugged his big old carcass back across the lawn to the main house so they could claim he died a gentlemans death in his own marital bed. Hah! Grandma El told me countless times that he liked to follow the serving wenches up the stairs so he could slip his hands up their heavy black skirts. They wouldnt dare say anything to the master of the house. Not if they wanted to keep their positions. Next comes Georges namesake, his eldest son George, and Georgies wife Peg. The kids had a nickname for Peg. They called her Hairy Toes because she had the habit of slipping silently through the mansion, peering through keyholes and eavesdropping on conversations. Then we have William and Katie, two more siblings, followed by daughter Kate and her husband Frederick Ziegler. George the Elder never forgave Katie for marrying a German even though the Dimlers shared the same origins. Now go back to the photo one more time and take a good look at the big beautiful dog on the front lawn. What a lovely animal. So handsome and well-behaved. Can you imagine my Aunt Ediths shock when she returned to Sea View in the early 1960s and found the dog still there on the front lawn?You see, the Dimlers loved their dog. They loved him so much that when he died, they couldnt bear to part with him so they had him stuffed and placed him on the front lawn. They werent entirely weird and heartless, however. They did bring him in when it rained. Which is probably more than my Aunt Edith could say about her years with them. To be continued . . . PS. A couple of people have asked me if I use a pattern for the little bags I sew. Not usually, but the bags are generally adaptations of one basic design. I thought I'd share that design in case anyone is interested. First, cut out the fabric! You can cut out either one piece where the fold would be the bottom of the bag or two pieces (you'd have to cut out two pieces if the pattern in the fabric goes in one direction. otherwise, the design would be upside down on one side of the bag). I use 1/4" seam allowances, so if you want the finished bag to be 5" wide and 7" tall, your one piece would need to be 5 1/2" wide and 14 1/2" long. The example is one piece, folded. You will want to cut a lining as well. It will be the same size as the exterior. Stitch the sides of the bag, right sides together and using a 1/4" seam. Also stitch the bottom if you cut two pieces instead of one. Next, you will sew in the corners of the bottom of the bag to create a flat bottom. Grab the bottom corner and fold the front and back of the bag down. Pin where you want to stitch. This will depend on how large of a bottom (heh heh, that sounds funny) you want. I measured in 1" from the corner. Repeat with the other corner and with the lining. Straps are next. I used a light webbing in the example, but you can use just about anything. Cut the handle about 1" longer than you want. If you want to sew straps using the same fabric as your bag exterior, you can either sew a tube and turn it inside out or cut a wide strip, fold in 1/4" and press on either side, then fold the strip in half and stitch down one end. Now you are going to attach the lining and the outer portion of the bag and the straps! You need to pin the right sides of the bag together, so this will most likely entail turning one of the bags inside out and inserting it inside the other. Make sure the side seams line up. Pin the sides and the centers of the front and back. Now take a handle and insert it between the lining and the exterior. Make sure each side of the handle is equidistant from its corresponding side seam (I think I went in 1 1/4" from the side for these handles). I like to have part of the handle sticking up about 1/4 or 1/2" from the edge. Okay, so now you have everything pinned. Stitch 1/4" from the edge, leaving a couple inches open (I usually leave the portion between a handle unsewn). You have to have this opening so you can turn the bag inside out, like so. You're nearly finished! Push the lining into the bag, and if you are detail oriented you will carefully press the top edge (I am lazy, so I did not press. I do something called finger pressing. I love that term). Pin the top edge, making sure the lining does not creep up and become visible (this is a good reason to make a two-tone lining. I often sew a strip of the exterior fabric to a lining piece so that the top part of the lining will match the outside of the bag. Comprende?). Carefully pin the section that is still open. After you sew it you shouldn't be able to tell where the opening is! All righty, now you are going to edge stitch the top. And VOILA! Your bag is complete! You may, of course, embellish as you please.
Your photos are really great for explaining how to put in the handles and lining. I usually baste the handles into place to avoid running over pins when I stitch that part.

One question-- am i missing something (i am a beginner) or is there some way to keep the lining inside the bag, beyond than the top stitching-- like tacking the lining and the bag together at the bottom? Sort plastic grocery and shopping bags into two lots. thick and thin. Printed bags crochet into great patterns, and the more colour the better (you can organize into stripes or add and switch colours randomly for a variegated overall pattern). For square bag and smaller hook, cut thin bags into 4 to 5 cm (1-5/8- to 2-in) wide strips. For round bag and larger hook, cut thin bags into 5 to 6.5 cm (2- to 2-1/2-in) strips and thick bags into 2.5 to 4 cm (1- to 1-5/8-in) strips. You can cut strips in two ways. Trim off top and bottom of bag, then, starting at top edge, cut strip in spiral, across and around bag, to bottom edge. OR trim off top of bag and lay bag flat on work surface, then, starting at top edge, cut strips straight down to fold at bottom edge, cutting through both layers. Tie strips together, end to end, with overhand knot. enclose strip ends as you crochet to avoid weaving in later. Get creative customize the shape and size to suit yourself! Cheaper alternative. you can also create your own ribbon by taking the same kind of fabric (about 2 1/2 inch piece), folding it in half right sides together and sewing (with a 1/2 inch seam) all the way down, iron the seam open and use a wooden spoon or long piece of dowling to flip it right way around. The top and bottom will be sewn shut when the bag is sewn together..
Pre-treat your fabric by washing it, drying it, and ironing out any wrinkles. Cut your two rectangles. I used pinking shears, but you don't have to. At this point, I applied my iron on transfer, but you can wait until the bag is sewn (just to make sure you manage to put the bag together before you waste a transfer) Put your fabric right sides together and stitch up the two sides (it's up to you which way you want the bag -- deep or wide!) In other words, you choose which are the sides and which are the top and bottom. I made mine square so it didn't matter. Your seam should be about 1/2 and inch (or a smidge more. err on the side of making it too big). Iron your seams open. Keeping things right sides together, look for the top of the bag (if you've already ironed on your transfer, make sure you don't do things upside down. er, I speak from experience here *blush*). This will be the opening of the bag, so we don't want to sew it closed. If you're using a sewing machine, zig zag stitch around the raw edge so it doesn't fray. Then fold it over about 1 ˝ and pin it. Iron it, being careful to make it nice and straight. Now just straight stitch all the way around, about 1/4 inch from the upper edge. Do a second row of stitches about 1 1/4 inches from the upper edge. If you're doing all this by hand, fold over about 3/4 inch and iron it. Now fold over another 3/4 inch and pin it. Iron it, being careful to make it nice and straight. Now just straight stitch all the way around, about 1/2 and inch from the upper edge.
Make sure your two lengths of ribbon are the same size. Pin one end of one of the ribbons about 1/3 of the way in from the edge on one of the sides (we'll call this side A). Make sure you make it go all the way down to the bottom hem (which we haven't sewn yet) as this will make the bag a lot stronger. Making sure not to twist the ribbon, pin the other end of it ALSO ON SIDE A about 1/3 of the way in from the other edge. Pin it so the ends are both flush with the bottom hem. There'll be a loopy part extending over the top hem. This is the handle (it shouldn't be TOO long as the bag is for the kids to carry). Trim the ribbon a bit if the handle seems too big. OPTIONAL. You can use fusible (iron on) sewing tape to tape the ribbons to the bag before you stitch them for a bit of extra support. If using a sewing machine. Once you're happy with the length of the handle, start stitching the ribbon to the bag along the top hem, turn the bag and stitch the ribbon down the length of the TOP HEM (not all the way down the bag), turn the bag and stitch the ribbon along the top hem, turn the bag and stitch all the way back up. You've made a rectangle of stitching that should match the stitching you made on the top hem. If stitching by hand. Stitch back and forth 3 times along the same stitch line as you made on the top hem. Now repeat the entire process on Side B of the bag so you have a handle on each side.
