A sleeping bag is a protective "bag" for a person to sleep in, essentially a blanket that can be closed with a zipper or similar means, and functions as a bed in situations where it is impractical to carry around a full bed (i. e. when camping, hiking, hill walking or climbing). Its primary purpose is to provide warmth and thermal insulation. It also protects, to some extent, against wind chill, precipitation, and exposure to view, but a tent performs those functions better. The bottom surface also provides some cushioning, but a sleeping pad is usually used in addition for that purpose. A bivouac sack (bivy) is a waterproof cover for a sleeping bag that may be used in place of a tent for lightweight travelers or as a backup if inclement weather occurs.

A basic sleeping bag is simply a square blanket, fitted with a zipper on one or two sides, allowing it to be folded in half and secured in this position. A sleeping bag of this type is packed by being folded in half or thirds, rolled up, and bound with straps or cords with cord locks. The basic design works well for most camping needs but is inadequate under more demanding circumstances. The second major type of sleeping bag, sometimes called a mummy bag because of its shape is different in a number of important ways.

It usually does not unzip all the way to the feet. The zipper is a weak point in any sleeping bag's insulating qualities. Together with the tapered shape, this design feature helps protect the feet, which are more vulnerable to heat loss than other parts of the body.

Many different insulating materials are available for sleeping bags. Outdoor professionals usually prefer either synthetic fill, such as PrimaLoft, or down, and they have debated the merits of these materials for years. Synthetic fill does not readily absorb water, dries easily, and provides some warmth even when thoroughly soaked. These properties may save the owner's life if, for example, the sleeping bag is accidentally dropped into water on a cold day. Synthetic material is also firm and resilient, so it insulates well even underneath a person's weight. Synthetics also have the ability to loft faster than down, allowing the sleeping bag to provide the insulation faster than a down bag. On the flipside, synthetic fill cannot be compressed as much as down, causing such bags to take up more space when not in use. Furthermore synthetic insulation tend to break down faster than their natural counter part. Down fill weighs less than synthetic and retains heat better, but usually costs more. Down must be kept dry. a soaked, down sleeping bag may provide even less insulation than no sleeping bag at all, leading to hypothermia. Newer, more technically advanced sleeping bags often have water-resistant shells and can be used in damper conditions. It is also recommended to keep a sleeping bag in a larger sack (storage sack) as opposed to the small traveling sack (compression bag) during long periods of storage. However, many regular backpackers and hikers agree that hanging a sleeping bag, taking care to move the position of the bag on the hanger at intervals so as to not create a "dead spot" (a spot where the fill has been crushed so that it is no longer useful), is the best method of storing a bag for long durations. Other materials, notably cotton and wool, have also been used for sleeping bags. Wool repels water nicely and also resists compression, but it weighs much more than any alternative. Cotton suffers from high water retention and significant weight, but its low cost makes it an attractive option for uses like stationary camping where these drawbacks are of little consequence.

In Europe, the EN 13537 standard normalizes the temperatures at which a sleeping bag can be used. A test, relying on a heated mannequin, provides four temperatures.

Indoor sleeping bags, sometimes called slumber bags, are widely available, often for use particularly by children. These are usually not designed to be weatherproof, and are often made of natural fabrics instead of the synthetic fabrics commonly used for outdoor sleeping bags. Children's sleeping bags in particular often feature elaborate, brightly-colored printed designs, such as images of popular media characters. Slumber bags make floor sleeping more comfortable, and are often used for sleepovers, family visits, and other situations where there are not enough beds for everyone.

Trekking Trekking sleeping bags are designed for longer trips where the total weight and pack size are more critical. They will make use of down or performance synthetic fillings to reduce the weight and bulk whilst maintaining a high level of warmth to weight.

Mountain Mountain sleeping bags may be specialist lightweight models for alpine use where the main aim is to keep bulk and weight to an absolute minimum. Equally they may be the extra warm bags required for temperatures in excess of -15C. If you are intending to use a sleeping bag in extreme low temperatures for extended trips a vapour barrier liner will improve performance.

Different manufacturers use different criteria to award their own ratings and every individual feels the cold differently too. For these reasons we give our sleeping bags a broader seasonal rating to give you an overall idea of the bags intended use based on typical UK conditions.

When using a sleeping bag there are a number of factors that will affect how you as an individual feel the temperature.� They can be divided into two categories as follows.

Insulation from the ground. Conduction through the base of the bag can be a major factor when sleeping in the cold. Selection of the appropriate mat and sleeping position can make a big difference in your comfort.

Sleeping bags do not generate any heat. A sleeping bag works by retaining a layer of warm air that you generate around you. this is what keeps you warm.

Shape most modern sleeping bags are mummy shaped with cowl hood and a taper towards the foot. these features allow the maximum amount of warmth to be trapped inside the bag.

Compression Bags many sleeping bags come with a compression bag which is fitted with straps to enable you to squash the bag up smaller than it would normally go. These bags are also available to buy separately.

Sometimes it is easier to pack your rucsac with a sleeping bag that is loosely compressed (allowing you to pack things more easily around it).

If using your sleeping bag regularly, it is a good idea to use a liner inside the bag. This keeps the bag clean and the liner is easier to wash than the whole bag.

Sleeping bags are a very important ingredient to any multi-day trip outdoors. Whether car camping or sleeping high on a cliff, having the right materials between you and the elements is a decision that should not be taken lightly. With all the colors, sizes, styles and materials these days, it's important to know what you are buying and how it will benefit you. Sleeping Bag Quick Tips.

Every sleeping bag has a different purpose, and it is important to match up the right sleeping bag to your activity of choice. The most important way to categorize a sleeping bag is by its rated temperature. Match up the bags rated temperature with the coolest temperatures that you expect to experience at night, then give yourself 10 insurance degrees to play it safe.

When choosing a sleeping bag for an adventure, the most important choice is down or synthetic insulation. Neither choice is ideal for all situations, and both have significant drawbacks and advantages. Down filled bags are light, compactable, and easy to maintain. However, if a down sleeping bag gets wet, the bag will lose all of its insulating properties and the user will be cold. Many manufacturers now make down bags with impervious outer materials to prevent moisture from negating the down's magical insulating properties. Down bags work well in dry climates and cold winter climates where moisture isn't an issue.

Synthetic filled sleeping bags are slightly heavier than down bags and they compress slightly less than their natural fiber relatives. If a synthetic bag gets wet, you will stay warm and the sleeping bag will maintain its insulating properties, ensuring you a safe and moderately comfortable night sleep. Synthetic bags work well in humid and wetter climates where moisture can be expected.

Select the right size, and don't settle for a bag that doesn't fit. Most sleeping bags are sized by height. If you are 5'8" and you select a sleeping bag that is sized for someone who is 6'3", you are wasting space, energy and weight. A sleeping bag should fit close to your actual height. It is nice to have extra room at the bottom for some clothes and possibly a hot water bottle, but not too much room that you are heating extra space and being inefficient.

Where are you going? There are an infinite number of destinations, and chances are that we carry a sleeping bag that will fit your needs. For example, a good summer sleeping bag for backpacking on the East coast would be a +40 degree F bag. A good winter sleeping bag for Alaska in the winter would be a -40 degree F bag. Be sure you know the climate that you will be primarily traveling in. If its on the west side of the Cascades, a synthetic bag may be your best bet because of all the moisture, and on the other end if you are hiking in the Nevada desert (remember, nights in the desert are cold!) a down filled bag could be a good choice. If you are a well rounded outdoor enthusiast, try to find the bag that most fits your activities. If you are a backpacker in mild climates, try to choose a bag that is compact and lightweight. If you are a mountaineer in cold climates, the temperature rating will be an important factor influencing your decision.

How cold will it be at night? A properly functioning sleeping bag maximizes efficiency by trapping non-moving, body-heated air inside the insulation, separating the user from the outside elements. Determine the minimum temperatures that you will experience at night in the backcountry and use that as a guide in choosing which type of sleeping bag. Do yourself a favor and give yourself some insurance by selecting a bag with a temperature rating that slightly exceeds the low end of the temperature range you expect to experience.

What is the best fit for my body and sleeping style? In order for a sleeping bag to accomplish its mission of keeping its user warm on a adventure, the bag needs to fit the user properly. Sleeping bags are measured in three ways. insulation type, temperature rating, and height. Select the correct fill and temperature rating with the guidelines above. For height, select the height that corresponds closest to your height. Select a bag that is at or slightly above your height. selecting a bag that is too short in order to save weight (a few grams) is not recommended. Another way to select a sleeping bag is to determine your sleeping style. If you are a mover at night or a stomach sleeper, a wider bag may be a good fit. If you are strictly a back sleeper, make sure that your bag is long enough. If you are extremely claustrophobic. a mummy-style bag may not be the best choice for you.

How can I maximize the performance of my bag? Sleeping bags, if well cared for, can last for 10 years or more. Both down and synthetic are made to last, but many factors are involved in the lifespan of your equipment. Start taking care of your bag even before you set out for your adventure. Make sure that your sleeping bag. be it down or synthetic, is not stored in a stuff sack. At home, make a place to hang your sleeping bags in a cool, dry place. If sleeping bags are stored in a compressed stuff sack, the insulation will be affected and compressed greatly over time. When in the field, make sure to keep you sleeping bag aired out. when you have a few moments lay out your bag in a dry place in order to evaporate some of the moisture that it absorbs from your body at night, especially in winter. Keep in mind that prolonged exposure to the sun will damage the materials. If the temperatures are below freezing, be sure to air out your sleeping bag. The frozen water molecules inside the insulation will change from solid to vapor without becoming a liquid through a transition called sublimation. On a week long winter climbing trip, a sleeping bag can end up gaining pounds in frozen moisture! Caring for the bag once back home after a trip is an integral part of the life cycle of your sleeping bag. We don't recommend that you wash your sleeping bag after each weekend outing (unless you need to), but a good washing will help maintain the loft of both a down and synthetic bag. Make sure that you wash the bag with specific down wash soap that you can purchase at Altrec. com. Other soaps can leave residue behind and hinder the life of the bag. Wash the bag on gentle cycle in a front loading washing machine only. Don't be afraid to put your sleeping bag in a drier, just be sure that you select and run the drier on LOW heat. Throw some clean tennis balls into the drier to create funky beats as well as give the down an opportunity to separate, thus drying faster. If the drier doesn't fully dry the down after once cycle, don't put the sleeping bag through another dry cycle. simply let the bag air dry completely. If the bag is not dried completely and then stored, it will mold and be virtually useless and smellier than before.

Your sleeping pad is almost as important as the sleeping bag itself. Without a sleeping pad, the sleeping bag can't work its magic. By the power of conduction the cold ground – even in summer – will rob you and your sleeping bag of heat. Different sleeping pads have different temperature ratings, but that is not as important as having a sleeping pad in the first place. Many options are available. just make sure it gets you off the ground.

Try your best to not breathe into the sleeping bag or sweat too heavily. water, even in the form of vapor, can negate the warming properties of the bag.

It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10. Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. I took this sleeping bag on a cold, chilly night in Tallahassee, FL. I went as low as 18 degrees, lower than the rated 25 degrees. It kept me warm all night and all I wore were two layers of PJ's. I dig the narrow design so it makes it easier to roll and tote. The only down side is that I am 6ft tall and I couldn't rap the mummy hoodie over my head. My recommendation, buy it b/c for the price you can't loose. I can't wait to take it out camping again at Terreya Park.

The recall targets 4,100 Pirates of the Caribbean sleeping bags and 8,000 Tinker Bell wands sold at Disney Stores nationwide between April and October of 2007, the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

At the end of a day of hiking, you've earned your sleepand you need it! For the next 8 to 10 hours, your sleeping bag will be your most important (or at least, most appreciated) piece of gear. But with hundreds to choose from, how do you pick the sleeping bag that's right for you? Here are five things you should know before you buy one.

Sleeping bags are rated according to temperature. In theory, a 20-degree bag will keep you warm in 20-degree temperatures. a 40-degree bag will keep you warm in 40-degree temperatures, and so on. Unfortunately, it's rarely that simple. A 20-degree bag from one manufacturer might not be as warm as a 20-degree bag from another. The easiest way to compare bags. Fluff them up and set them on the floor next to each other. The fluffiest bag is usually the warmest. People's body temperatures are also different, and you may sleep warmer (or colder) than other people. If you're the type who always needs extra blankets, then you need a warmer bag. To pick the right bag, try to imagine the lowest temperature you'll be camping in, then pick a bag rated 5 to 10 degrees colder. But don't go overboard. "Warmer" is not necessarily "better." In summer, a bag that is too warm is uncomfortableplus it weighs more and costs more. Here are some guidelines. Most summer hikers will be comfortable in a 40-degree bag. Those who hike above treeline or in the spring and fall usually use 20- to 30-degree bags. Most winter wanderers need a bag that can handle 0- to 20-degree temperatures.

The next consideration is fill (the insulation). Many campers prefer down, but in recent years, technology has narrowed the weight vs. warmth gap between down and synthetics. You can find appropriate bags made of either down or synthetics for almost any temperature range. Down insulates better than synthetics, and it is highly compressible, so it takes up less space in your pack. But all down is not created equal. Down fill is measured in numbers usually ranging from 550 to 850. In simple terms, "fill" is a measure of fluffiness (more technically speaking, how much "loft" the down has). The loftier the down, the warmer it keeps youand the higher the price. Down's major flaw is that it loses almost all of its insulating capacity if it gets wet, and a wet down sleeping bag is useless. As a result, you need to protect a down bag by carrying it in a waterproof stuff sack or use a synthetic bag.

The fit of your sleeping bag is not as important as the fit of your boots, but it makes a difference in how comfortablyand warmlyyou sleep. Mummy bags are the snuggest and warmest. Semirectangular bags offer a little more room for claustrophobic sleepers. Rectangular bags are the roomiestalso the draftiest. Other variations of bags include width, length, and even gender. (Men's bags are longer, with more room in the shoulders. Women's bags are shorter, with more room in the hips.) What's the best way to find one that fits? Climb into it in the store! The bag should fit loosely enough to allow you to wear a few layers of clothes when the temperature gets colder than you expected. You should also be able to move around in the bag and reach all the zippers and cords.

Resist the temptation to get a bag that is too roomy. Sleeping bags insulate you by trapping air near your body. The snugger the bag, the warmer you'll feel. This is true for children, too. They need smaller bags. In winter, longer bags give you room to stash some of your gear at the bottom to keep it from freezing.

A sleeping bag's shell material probably won't be a deciding factor in your purchase. But if you plan to spend the bulk of your hiking time in a desert, look for breathable, lightweight fabrics like taffeta and ripstop nylon. If you're headed for a rainforest, choose from among the many breathable, water-resistant fabrics available. In between those extremes, you'll find fabrics like microfiber, tightly woven nylon, or polyester, which is somewhat water-resistant and will protect the insulation from leaks, condensation, and contact with wet gear.

Three-season bags should have a hood. For colder weather, you need a draft collar (to hold in air around the neck) and a draft tube that runs the length of the bag (to protect the zipper from leaking cold air). Some bags, such as those manufactured by Big Agnes, have a fabric sleeve in back through which you can place your sleeping pad. This holds the bag securely on top of the pad. No more tossing and turning until you slip off the pad and onto the hard ground.

You can also add warmth by using an extra-thick air mattress or a sleeping bag liner, wearing extra clothing (especially a hat), sleeping with a hot-water bottle, sharing a tent, and eating and drinking before you go to bed.

Care instructions vary according to the type of fill and the manufacturer. Some bags should either be hand-washed or washed on the gentlest cycle in a front-loading machine (the agitator motion in most washing machines can easily rip the baffles inside of your sleeping bag), then air-dried (again, on the gentle cycle). Check with your manufacturer for specific instructions. Some manufacturers also offer a cleaning service. Store your sleeping bag outside its stuff sack. Compression will damage down over time. It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10. Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. We bought 4 of these bags - one for each of the family (Myself, the wife and a 5 and 4 year old). These sleeping bags are excelent value for the price. Perhaps not suitable for a more gonzo backpacker - or technical trekking, but fine for most family uses. The cloth interior is quite comfortable, and each bag comes with a convenient packing sleeve.

This sleeping bag is great, and a great price. I looked around and these were the best price for the quality. It is hard to find bags with a cotton/flannel interior. I purchased two of these sleeping bags for a Girl Scout outing with my daughter's girl scout troop. My daughter and I were the only ones that did not need extra bedding! We stayed nice and warm in our sleeping bags, with temperature dipping into the 20's. The only problem we had was with the string/rope that ties the sleeping bag into a roll for storage. The string/rope came unraveled on one of the bags and now it is difficult to tie. I was a little disapointed by the storage bags. They are just the plastic liners that the bags come in. Very difficult to fit the bags back into them, so we had to pitch them. Also the discription of the color of the sleeping bag is off, too. The exterior color is an army green color, with a light gray plaid interior.

You cant sleep. It’s freezing, so you try to crawl inside your sleeping bag as deep as you can — leaving only a little opening for your mouth to breathe. Or maybe it’s kind of warm out. You’re too toasty inside the bag but too cold without it. The trick to foolproof camp z-z-z’s is picking the right sleeping bag for the weather conditions. So we asked Terry Schocke for some help. This man knows his sleeping bags. As director of programs at the BSA’s Northern Tier National High Adventure Bases in northern Minnesota, Schocke helps Scouts prepare for sticky summers, bitter to-the-bone winters and everything in between. Here’s what he says to consider when buying your next bag. THE LOWDOWN PRICE There’s a wide range. Quality backpacking bags can be found for $75 to $150. Double that price if you’re looking for a down-filled bag. In the $30 to $60 range you’ll find bags that are heavier and won’t pack down quite as well. “A good rule of thumb is, the more you spend, the more compressible and lightweight the sleeping bag will be,” Schocke says. DOWN VS. SYNTHETIC The stuff inside a sleeping bag that keeps you warm is called insulation. There are two main types. down (as in goose down) and synthetic, which is man-made insulation with brand names like Quallofil, PrimaLoft and Fiberfill. “Compared with synthetic bags, down is more compressible, durable and lighter for the same warmth,” Schocke says. “But it doesn’t handle moisture well and is tougher to care for.” Schocke recommends that Scouts stick with synthetic bags because they work well, are simple to care for (machine washable) and are much less expensive. TEMP RATINGS Most bags have a temperature rating on the tag. It’ll say something like. +30° or -20°. This tells you, roughly, the minimum temperature that will be comfortable while in that bag. “It’s important to know there’s no industry standard about how they determine temperature ratings,” Schocke says. “Those are just generic guidelines.” Also, keep in mind how you sleep — temperature-wise, that is. Are you a hot sleeper? Or do you always seem to be colder than your friends? If you’re a cold sleeper, for example, go with a bag that’s rated for colder temperatures. SHAPE Sleeping bags come in two main shapes. rectangle and mummy. Rectangular bags are roomier, giving you more room to roll around and are best for summer camping. They also weigh more and don’t pack down as well. Mummy bags are best for colder conditions. They hug your body, and most come with a hood you can cinch down over your head. “The tighter it fits, the warmer it’s going to be,” Schocke says. “It’s best to get the smallest bag you can feel comfortable in.” That way your body doesn’t waste energy trying to heat up a lot of extra space. However, you don’t want it so tight that it restricts circulation or compressibility. And in winter you may want a little extra space in the foot area to keep boots warm, dry out gloves or to keep a water bottle from freezing. WEIGHT COMPRESSIBILITY If you’re backpacking, it’s important to find a bag that’s lightweight and compressible. The most compressible bags can be stuffed until slightly larger than a volleyball. It is my belief that every person (not just Scouts) should have a sleeping bag that goes down to 0 degrees. If it is too warm, you can just unzip it a little. Sooner or later, you will need that lowest temperature rating, and your life may depend on it. The lower the rating, the more days of the year that you can go camping later. I consider a 40 degree bag is just about useless. It gives you a false sense of security, but still costs money. Also you can add quite a bit of warmth by wearing an oversized hooded sweatshirt or a ski-cap at night. You need to keep your head and neck warm to be able to go to sleep. Mummy bags will definitely keep you warmer, you just have to get used to the restricted area around your feet and the bag closing in around your face. Get a bag that is a little extra long and it feels a lot better. I couldnt care less about a light-weight sleeping bag or a highly compressible sleeping bag. About 99% of the camping is done within 50 of a car. Warmth is the most important thing.

When you hear a bag described as a "20-degree bag," it means that most users will remain comfortable if the air temperature drops no lower than 20°F. Mainly they're tailored to fit women bettera little wider in the hips, a little narrower in the shoulder. That makes them more comfortable to sleep in, but also improves thermal efficiency because the air spaces inside the bag have fewer gaps and pockets that you have to heat up. With the magnitude of Arthur Russell's legacy quite firmly prominent in the minds of most music lovers today each new reissue of rare or hard-to-find material is rightfully greeted with feverish glee. To give you a bit of background on this one, Sleeping Bag was Arthur Russell's record label, set up in 1981 with Will Socolov and including Kurtis Mantronik amongst the labels A&R, with a roster that included Russell working under a plethora of pseudonyms alongside Mantronix, Cash Money & Marvelous, EPMD and Just-Ice among other seminal NYC acts during the mid-late 80's exploring the nascent genres of hiphop, disco and proto house, or basically put, dance music. It is also recommended to keep a sleeping bag in a larger sack (storage sack) as opposed to the small traveling sack (compression bag) during long periods of storage. However, many regular backpackers and hikers agree that hanging a sleeping bag, taking care to move the position of the bag on the hanger at intervals so as to not create a "dead spot" (a spot where the fill has been crushed so that it is no longer useful), is the best method of storing a bag for long durations. Other materials, notably cotton and wool, have also been used for sleeping bags. Wool repels water nicely and also resists compression, but it weighs much more than any alternative.
