A fishing rod or a fishing pole is a tool used to catch fish, usually in conjunction with the sport of angling, can also be used in competition casting (sport). (Sustenance and commercial fishing usually involves nets). A length of fishing line is attached to a long, flexible rod or pole. one end terminates in a hook for catching the fish. A 'fishing pole' is a simple pole or stick for suspending a line (normally fastened to the tip), with a hooked lure or bait. They are most commonly made of fiberglass, carbon fiber or, classically, bamboo, and are the only fishing levers properly referred to as "poles". In contrast, 'fishing rod' refers to a more sophisticated casting tool fitted with line guides and a reel for line stowage. Fishing rods vary in action as well as length, and can be found in sizes between 24 inches and 20 feet. The longer the rod, the greater the mechanical advantage in casting.
These high-tech poles are commonly used for coarse fishing in Europe, they are made using a variety of different qualities of carbon fiber which is reflected in the price, the prices range from about £100 to £5,000. Varying in length from 3 meters through to the longest at about 18.5 meters, they allow very precise positioning of the bait, which in turn enables huge catches of fish with accurate feeding, catches of carp on fisheries in the UK frequently reach 90 kg (200 pounds) in a 5 hour match, mostly made up of carp ranging in size from 250 grams (0.5lb) to 1.3 kg (3lb) in weight.
Fly Fishing rods are, thin, flexible fishing rods designed to cast an artificial fly, usually consisting of a hook tied with fur, feathers, foam, or other lightweight material. More modern flies are also tied with synthetic materials. Originally made of yew, green hart, and later split bamboo (Tonkin cane), most modern fly rods are constructed from man-made composite materials, including fiberglass, carbon/graphite, or graphite/boron composites. Split bamboo rods are generally considered the most beautiful, the most "classic", and are also generally the most fragile of the styles, and they require a great deal of care to last well. Instead of a weighted lure, a fly rod uses the weight of the fly line for casting, and lightweight rods are capable of casting the very smallest and lightest fly. Typically, a monofilament segment called a "leader" is tied to the fly line on one end and the fly on the other. Each rod is sized to the fish being sought, the wind and water conditions and also to a particular weight of line. larger and heavier line sizes will cast heavier, larger flies. Fly rods come in a wide variety of line sizes, from size #000 to #0 rods for the smallest freshwater trout and pan fish up to and including #16 rods
For large saltwater game fish. Fly rods tend to have a single, large-diameter line guide (called a stripping guide), with a number of smaller looped guides (aka snake guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of the relatively thick fly line. To prevent interference with casting movements, most fly rods usually have little or no butt section (handle) extending below the fishing reel. However, the spey rod, a fly rod with an elongated rear handle, is often used for fishing either large rivers for salmon and steelhead or saltwater surf casting, using a two-handed casting technique. Fly rods are, in modern manufacture, almost always built out of carbon graphite. The graphite fibers are laid down in increasingly sophisticated patterns to keep the rod from flattening when stressed (usually referred to as hoop strength) See St Croix ART. The rod tapers from one end to the other and the degree of taper determines how much of the rod flexes when stressed. The larger amount of the rod that flexes the 'slower' the rod. Slower rods are easier to cast, create lighter presentations but create a wider loop on the forward cast that reduces casting distance and is subject to the effects of wind. Fly Rods. Guide to Fly Rod Flex Action. Furthermore, the process of wrapping graphite fiber sheets to build a rod creates imperfections that result in rod twist during casting. Rod twist is minimized by orienting the rod guides along the side of the rod with the most 'give'. This is done by flexing the rod and feeling for the point of most give or by using computerized rod testing (see Fly Rod Balancing ). See also Fly fishing. Custom rod building is an active form of hobby among fly fishermen. See Fly rod building.
Spin casting rods are rods designed to hold a spin casting reel, which are normally mounted above the handle (See Fishing reel). Spin casting rods also have small eyes and a forefinger grip trigger. They are very similar to bait casting rods, to the point where either type of reel may be used on a particular rod. While rods were at one time offered as specific "spin casting" or "bait casting" rods, this has become uncommon, as the rod design is suited to either fishing style, and today they are generally called simply "casting rods", and are usually offered with no distinction as to which style they are best suited for in use. Casting rods are typically viewed as more powerful than their spinning rod counterparts - they use heavier line and can handle heavier cover.
Spinning rods are made from graphite or fiberglass with a cork or PVC foam handle, and tend to be between 5 and 8.5 feet (1.5 - 2.6 m) in length. Typically, spinning rods have anywhere from 5-8 large-diameter guides arranged along the underside of the rod to help control the line. The eyes decrease in size from the handle to the tip, with the one nearest the handle usually much larger than the rest to allow less friction as the coiled line comes off the reel, and to gather the very large loops of line that come off the spinning reel's spool. Unlike bait casting and spin casting reels, the spinning reel hangs beneath the rod rather than sitting on top, and is held in place with a sliding or locking reel seat. The fishermans second and third fingers straddle the "leg" of the reel where it is attached to the reel seat on the rod, and the weight of the reel hangs beneath the rod, which makes for a comfortable way to fish for extended periods. This also allows the rod to be held in the fisherman's dominant hand (the handle on all spinning reels is reversible) which greatly increases control and nuance applied to the rod itself. Spinning rods and reels are widely used in fishing for popular North American sport fish including bass, trout, pike and walleye. Popular targets for spinning in the UK and European continent are pike, perch, eel and zander. Longer spinning rods with elongated grip handles for two-handing casting are frequently employed for saltwater or steelhead and salmon fishing. Spinning rods are also widely used for trolling and still fishing with live bait.
These rods are used to fish for smaller species, they provide more sport with larger fish, or to enable fishing with lighter line and smaller lures. Though the term is commonly used to refer to spinning or spin-cast rods and tackle, fly rods in smaller line weights (size #0 - #3) have also long been utilized for ultra-light fishing, as well as to protect the thin-diameter, lightweight end section of leader, or tippet, used in this type of angling. Ultra-light spinning and casting rods are generally shorter (4 - 5.5 feet is common) lighter, and more limber than normal rods. Tip actions vary from slow to fast, depending upon intended use. These rods usually carry 1 to 6 pound (4.5 to 27 N) test fishing line. Some ultra-light rods are capable of casting lures as light as 1/64th of an ounce - typically small spinners, wet flies, crappie jigs, tubes, or bait such as trout worms. Originally produced to bring more excitement to the sport, ultra-light spin fishing is now widely used for crappie, trout, bass, bluegill and other types of panfish.
Sea rods are designed for use with huge fish from the ocean. They are long (around 4 metres on average), extremely thick, and feature huge and heavy tips, eyes, and handles. The largest of sea rods are for use with sport fishing boats. Some of these are specialized rods, including shark rods, and marlin rods, and are for use with very heavy equipment.
The most common type of sea rods are for surf casting. Surf casting rods resemble oversized spinning or bait casting rods with long grip handles intended for two-handed casting techniques. Generally between 10 to 14 feet (3 - 4 m) in length, surf casting rods need to be longer in order for the user cast the lure or bait beyond the breaking surf where fish tend to congregate, and sturdy enough to cast heavy weighted lures or bait needed to hold the bottom in rough water. They are almost always used in shore fishing (sea fishing from the shoreline) from the beach, rocks or other shore feature. Some surfcasters use powerful rods to cast up to six ounces or more of lead weight, artificial lures, and/or bait hundreds of feet.
Trolling is a fishing method of casting the lure or bait to the side of, or behind, a moving boat, and letting the motion of the boat pull the bait through the water. In theory, for light and medium freshwater gamefishing, any casting or spinning rod (with the possible exception of ultralight rods) can be used for trolling. In the last 30 years, most manufacturers have developed a complete line of generally long, heavily built rods sold as "Trolling Rods", and aimed heavily at ocean anglers and Great Lakes salmon and steelhead fishermen. A rod effective for trolling should have relatively fast action, as a very "whippy" slow action rod is extremely frustrating to troll with, and a fast action (fairly stiff) rod is generally much easier to work with when fishing by this method. Perhaps the extreme in this philosophy was reached during the 1940's and early 1950's, when the now-defunct True Temper corporation - a maker of garden tools - marketed a line of trolling rods of 4.5 to 5 foot length made of tempered steel which was square in cross section. They acted as excellent trolling rods, though the action was much too stiff for sportsmanlike playing of fish once hooked. As Great Lakes sportfishing in particular becomes more popular with each passing year, all rod manufacturers continue to expand their lines of dedicated "trolling" rods, though as noted, for most inland lake and stream fishing, a good casting or spinning rod is perfectly adequate for trolling.
Telescopic fishing rods are designed to collapse down to a short distance and open to a long rod. 20 or even 30 foot rods can close to as little as a foot and a half. This makes the rods very easy to transport to remote areas or travel on buses, compact cars, or public buses and subways. Telescopic fishing rods are made from the same materials as conventional one or two piece rods. Graphite and fiberglass or composites of these materials are designed to slip into each other so that they open and close. The eyes are generally but not always a special design to aid in making the end of each section stronger. Various grade eyes available in conventional rods are also available in telescopic fishing rods. Care for telescopic fishing rods is much the same as other rods. The only difference being that one should not open the telescopic rod in manner that whips a closed rod into the open position rapidly. Whipping or flinging a telescopic fishing rod open may and likely will cause it to be difficult to close. When closing the rods make a slight twisting motion while pushing the sections together. Often the rods come with tip covers to protect the tip and guides. Surf rods are very popular rods to use telescopic models of. Carrying around a 12 or 14 foot fishing rod, even in 2 pieces, is cumbersome. The shorter the sections the shorter they close, the more eyes they have, and the better the power curve is in them. More eyes means better weight and stress distribution throughout the parabolic arc. This translates to further casting, stronger fish fighting abilities, and less breaking of the rod.
Judging by stone inscriptions, fishing rods go back to ancient Egypt, China, Greece, Rome and medieval England, where they were called "angles" (hence the term "angling" as a synonym for fishing). Prior to widespread availability of synthetic materials, such as fiberglass and graphite composites, fishing rods were typically made from split Tonkin bamboo, Calcutta reed, or ash wood, as it was necessary that they be made light, tough, and pliable. The butts were frequently made of maple, with bored bottom. this butt outlasted several tops. Handles and grips were generally of cork, wood, or wrapped cane. Guides were made of simple wire loops or, later, loops with ring-shaped agate inserts for better wear. Even today, Tonkin split-bamboo rods are still popular in fly fishing. Rods for travellers were made with nickel-silver metal joints, or ferrules, that could be inserted into one another forming the rod. Some of them were made to be used as a walking cane until needed for sport. Since the 1980s, with the advent of flexible, yet stiff graphite ferrules, travel rod technology has greatly advanced, and multi-piece travel rods that can be transported in a suitcase or backpack constitute a large share of the market.
In theory, an ideal rod should gradually taper from butt to tip, be tight in all its joints, and have a smooth, progressive taper, without 'dead spots'. Modern design and fabrication techniques, along with advanced materials such as graphite and boron composites have allowed rod makers to tailor both the shape and action of fishing rods for greater casting distance, accuracy, and fish-fighting qualities. Today, fishing rods are identified by their weight (meaning the weight of line or lure required to flex a fully-loaded rod) and action (describing the location of the maximum flex along the length of the rod). Modern fishing rods retain cork as a common material for grips. Cork is light, durable, keeps warm and tends to transmit rod vibrations better than synthetic materials, although EVA foam is also used. Reel seats are often of graphite-reinforced plastic, aluminum, or wood. Guides are available in steel and titanium with a wide variety of high-tech metal alloy inserts replacing the classic agate inserts of earlier rods.
Also known as "power value" or "rod weight." Rods may be classified as Ultra-Light, Light, Medium-Light, Medium, Medium-Heavy, Heavy, Ultra-Heavy, or other similar combinations. Power is often an indicator of what types of fishing, species of fish, or size of fish a particular pole may be best used for. Ultra-light rods are suitable for catching small bait fish and also panfish, or situations where rod responsiveness is critical. Ultra-Heavy rods are used in deep sea fishing, surf fishing, or for heavy fish by weight. While the use of designating a rod's power is widespread, there is no fixed standard. Application of a particular power tag by a manufacturer is subjective. Any fish can be caught with any rod, but catching panfish on a heavy rod offers no sport whatsoever, and successfully landing a large fish on an ultralight rod requires supreme rod handling skills at best, and more frequently ends in broken tackle and a lost fish. Rods are best suited to the type of fishing they are intended for.
A rod is usually also classified by the optimal weight of fishing line or in the case of fly rods, fly line the rod should handle. Fishing line weight is described in pounds of tensile force before the line parts. Line weight for a rod is expressed as a range that the rod is designed to support. Fly rod weights are typically expressed as a number from 1 to 12, written as "N"wt (e. g. 6wt.) and each weight represents a standard weight in grains for the first 30 feet of the fly line established by the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Association. For example, the first 30' of a 6wt fly line should weigh between us. grains, with the optimal weight being 160 grains. In casting and spinning rods, designations such as "8-15 lb. line" are typical. A rod's action and power may change when line weight is greater or lesser than the rod's specified range. When the line weight used greatly exceeds a rod's specifications a rod may break before the line parts. When the line weight is significantly less than the rod's recommended range the line may part prematurely, as the rod cannot fully flex to accommodate the pull of a given weight fish. In fly rods, exceeding weight ratings may warp the blank or have casting difficulties when rods are improperly loaded.
Beside steelhead, many anglers tend to forget about other fisheries that are widely available at the same time. Their size may be dwarfed by a winter steelhead, but fishing for coastal trout and char can be just as exciting!

You've never got a fishing rod on you when you want one. Oh how we remember all those times strolling along the banks of the Limpopo, when up pops the fin of a marlin, or perhaps we hear the splash of a leaping sword-fish, and darn it if we've forgotten a fishing rod. If only we'd had a Pen Fishing Rod to hand? Of course marlin and swordfish are not fresh-water fish and we've never been to the Limpopo, but it sounded more appealing than watching a dead perch floating in the Grand Union Canal. We're getting off the point somewhat (again!). Ok, this clever little gadget is about the size of a large marker pen at only eight inches long, and yet opens up to become an aluminium alloy 4ft fishing rod, complete with a left and right handed reel (packed separately), a 5lb breaking strain line, and even includes a triple hook spinner. Never again will you be caught short when you spot a fish rise, and it's small enough to carry with you everywhere!
This fabulous gadget caught my attention and reeled me in. I went for it hook, line and sinker. Despite being a strong swimmer it pulled me in! It's wild and outragous fish any where, be the best - have a pen fishing rod!
The pen fishing rod is great! You can easily take it anywhere because its so small. Its a bit bigger than a pen but still small enough to fit in your pocket. Its fab!!!

Fishing. Early history. ).one of the first tools made. This was attached to a handline of animal or vegetable material, a method that is efficient only when used from a boat. The practice of attaching the line in turn to a rod, at first probably a stick or tree branch, made it possible to fish from the bank or shore and even to reach over vegetation bordering the water.

Manufacturing fishing rod, rod blanks and carbon fibre tubes in Liverpool, UK. Home of the Torrix and Ballista Carp and Barbel Rods
I started Harrison Advanced Rods in 1989 because I wanted to source better blanks for the rods I was building. Nineteen years on, we make tens of thousands of rods and blanks each year for anglers who take their sport seriously. We are most famous form Carp Rods, but we make so much more. We do not follow fashion - we prefer to lead technically. We led with overfit joints, 40 Ton carbon, 3k and 1k fabrics, and today we still lead with higher modulus and lightweight carbons combined with lower resin content. We are one of the few companies that still make rods and blanks in the UK. Not because we want to preserve UK manufacturing (though that is a pretty good reason), but because I believe we can produce better fishing rods here in my Liverpool factory where I can see every rod blank being rolled from my office window. The guys who work for me are as committed as myself. Every person who is involved in making Harrison Rods loves fishing. Our production is tight and controlled. You cannot get that same level of control if you subcontract your manufacturing overseas.

Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods - Identification and Value Guide While Homel's book is helpful in giving a general idea of a fishing rod's value, there are some gaps in information.
Antique/Collectible Fishing Rods Review This book was perfect for the avid rod collector. The photos and detail were great and easy to compare your own rods to theirs listed in the book. Highly recommend.
Wasn't very helpful for what I needed. I have 7 antique/vintage fishing rods and none of them were in there. Also, the prices were separate from the descriptions so I couldn't tell what I was pricing.

Various fish and differing conditions require different rods. Think about what kind of fishing you're going to do before heading into the shop.
Most sporting goods stores have experts to help you choose the rod for your type of fishing. Have an idea of how often you're going to fish, what type of fish you want to catch and where you'll be fishing.
If buying used fishing equipment, check the rod for hairline cracks on the pole. When testing flexibility, listen for any cracking noise from the tip of pole.

A fishing rod holder for mounting within a pickup truck bed includes a housing having a top surface with a pair of side walls depending therefrom. Also depending from the top surface are a vertical front wall and an oblique, inwardly extending rear wall. Received within the housing and accessible from the top surface thereof are a plurality of obliquely extending tubular rod holders. A mounting lip is positioned adjacent a front edge of the top surface for fastening the housing to a truck bed wall or toolbox.
What is claimed is. 1. A fishing rod holder comprising. a substantially hollow housing including a top surface having a front edge. said housing further including a pair of opposing sidewalls, a front wall and a rear wall depending from said top surface. said rear wall inwardly and obliquely depending from said top surface such that said housing has a substantially triangular cross-sectional configuration. an elongated, substantially U-shaped lip secured to the top surface of said housing and longitudinally positioned along the front edge thereof for suspending said housing from a support surface. a plurality of tubular fishing rod holders received within said housing and depending from the top surface thereof, said rod holders being parallel to said rear wall to suspend a rod at a predetermined angle relative to a vertical plane. 2. The fishing rod holder according to claim 1 further comprising a plurality of rod holders secured to the rear wall of said housing for accommodating additional fishing rods. 3. The fishing rod holder according to claim 1 wherein said housing further includes an open bottom allowing moisture accumulation within the housing to drain therefrom. 4. The fishing rod holder according to claim 1 wherein said housing further includes a reinforcement plate disposed therein, said plate fastened to the rear wall, the top surface and the front wall to enhance the structural integrity of the housing. 5. The fishing rod holder according to claim 1 wherein said front wall vertically depends from said top surface. 6. The fishing rod holder according to claim 5 wherein said sidewalls vertically depend from said top surface.
The present invention relates to a fishing rod holder designed particularly for mounting within a pickup truck bed to conveniently transport a plurality of fishing rods.
Fishermen often transport numerous fishing rods in a vehicle. However, storing rods in a vehicle presents numerous problems. Each rod usually includes fishing line with lures or hooks attached thereto that can easily become entangled when the rods are contiguously stored in a trunk or other storage compartment. Furthermore, the rods are jostled in a moving vehicle often resulting in significant damage thereto. Various fishing rod holders have been heretofore designed to assist fisherman in transporting multiple fishing rods. However, most of these devices are designed to be attached to the vehicle bumper, i. e., typically the front bumper. Such conventional devices have several disadvantages. They typically employ a complicated, cumbersome attachment means for fastening to the bumper. Furthermore, each rod is typically secured in an upright, vertical position creating substantial wind drag as well as jolting, bending and/or breakage of the rods. For example, U. S. Pat. No. 5,715,952 issued to Chichetti discloses a fishing rod holding device including a pair of horizontal, spaced supporting members having a plurality of vertical, spaced tubular fishing rod holders secured thereto. Suction cups are positioned on the back surface of the supporting members to attach the device to a support surface. U.S. Pat. No. 5,435,473 issued to Larkum discloses a fishing rod holder including vertical tubes secured to a horizontal support surface. The upper end of each holder includes a vertical slot for accommodating a fishing reel post. A restraining bar is received within apertures on the holders to prevent removal of the fishing rods. U.S. Pat. No. 4,871,099 issued to Bogar, Jr. discloses a fishing rod holder including a plurality of vertically extending tubular holders connected to a plurality of horizontally spaced supports. Each holder includes tapered slots for receiving a reel. U.S. Pat. No. 5,815,976 issued to Jernigan, et al. discloses a fishing rod holder including a connector plate that attaches to a vehicle bumper. An arm having a plurality of sleeve holders is coupled with the plate. U.S. Pat. No. 2,055,842 issued to Haislip discloses a fishing rod holder including a clamp attachable to a boat having a cup pivotally secured thereto for receiving and supporting a fishing rod. U.S. Pat. No. 5,033,233 issued to Minter discloses a fishing rod holder including a bracket attached to the rear bumper of a vehicle. One or more tubes are pivotally mounted on the frame, each of which can receive a fishing rod. As indicated above, a myriad of fishing rod holders, some of which are attachable to vehicles, exist in the prior art. However, none are uniquely configured according to the present invention to allow for quick attachment to a pickup truck bed wall or truck bed toolbox as is the present invention. Furthermore, the fishing rod holder according to the present invention suspends each rod at an angle relative to a vertical plane to firmly anchor the rods and to minimize bending or breakage thereof as the vehicle is moving.
The present invention relates to a fishing rod holder designed for a vehicle, particularly a pickup truck. The device comprises a hollow housing having a horizontal top surface, an open bottom, two opposing vertical side walls depending from the top surface and a vertical front wall therebetween. Obliquely depending from a rear edge of the top surface is a rear wall. The rear wall extends inwardly at a predetermined angle so that the housing assumes a substantially triangular cross-sectional configuration. On the top surface immediately adjacent the front edge thereof is an elongated lip having a substantially inverted, U-shaped cross-sectional configuration for encompassing a support surface such as the upper edge of a truck bed front wall or a bed mounted toolbox. On the top surface of the housing are a plurality of substantially aligned apertures. Received within each aperture is an elongated tubular rod holder, each for receiving the lower end of the fishing rod. Each rod holder is substantially parallel to the housing rear wall so as to suspend each rod at an angle relative to a vertical plane. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a fishing rod holder that can be quickly and conveniently secured within the bed of a pickup truck. It is another object of the present invention to provide a fishing rod holder that allows fishermen to conveniently transport multiple fishing rods. It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a fishing rod holder that minimizes damage and bending of fishing rods normally associated with conventional vehicle mounted rod holders. Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become readily apparent from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment when considered with the attached drawings and the appended claims.
The present invention relates to a fishing rod holder designed to mount to a vehicle, particularly a pickup truck. The device comprises a hollow housing 1 having a horizontal top surface 2, an open bottom 3, two opposing vertical side walls 4 depending from the top surface and a vertical front wall 5 therebetween. Obliquely depending from a rear edge of the top surface is a rear wall 6. The rear wall extends inwardly at a predetermined angle so that the housing has a substantially triangular cross-sectional configuration. Centrally disposed within the housing is a substantially triangular reinforcement plate 8 having a rear edge, a front edge and a top edge each peripherally fastened to the rear wall, the front wall and the top surface, respectively, to enhance the structural integrity of the housing. An elongated lip 10 extends along substantially the entire length of the front edge of the housing top surface. The lip has a substantially inverted U-shaped cross-sectional configuration for engaging and encompassing a support surface such as the upper edge of a truck bed front wall or a bed mounted toolbox. On the top surface of the housing are a plurality of substantially aligned apertures 12. Received within each aperture is an elongated tubular rod holder 13 that extends into the housing interior, each for receiving the lower end of a fishing rod. Each rod holder is substantially parallel to the housing rear wall so as to suspend each rod at an angle relative to a vertical plane. A plurality of tubular rod holders 21 may also be fastened to the exterior surface of the rear wall for angularly suspending additional rods, if desired. Each rod holder preferably includes a substantially open lower end with a transverse strip 31 that is received within an indention found on the lower end of most fishing rods to anchor the rod within the holder. As is now readily apparent, the above described device can be quickly and conveniently mounted within a pick up truck bed to conveniently transport a plurality of fishing rods. Furthermore, the angular orientation of the rod holders minimizes bumping, bending and breakage of the rods as the vehicle is moving. The unique design of the housing affords several advantages over more conventional designs. specifically, the inwardly extending rear wall significantly reduces the materials necessary to allow the housing to accommodate the angularly extending rod holders. Additionally, the housing configuration occupies less storage space in the truck bed than would a square or box-shaped housing. Because the top mounted rod holders allow water to seep into the housing interior, the bottom is open so that the water will immediately drain to the truck bed. The present invention is not to be limited to the exact details of construction and enumeration of parts described above. Additionally, the size, shape and materials of construction of the various components forming the present invention may be varied to suit a particular application. Though the device that has been shown and described as primarily designed for mounting to the upper edge of a truck bed wall, the device can be easily fastened to other suitable support surfaces. Although there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that modifications may be made thereto which do not exceed the scope of the appended claims. Therefore, the scope of the invention is only to be limited by the following claims.

In Europe, carp fishing is a well established and expanding sport where catching carp is by far the most popular branch of freshwater fishing by miles. Since the 1940's, English carp fishing specialists started to develop a huge array of rods, reels, tactics and baits. In 1952 Richard Walker shot to fame when he caught a 44lb common carp from Redmire Pool in England. shortly after this, carp fishing started its momentous gain into the mainstream European sport we know today. Most bass fisherman in the US used to label carp as trash fish, though recently through publicity and education from groups like American Carp Society and CAG more and more fishermen in the US now seem to realize how challenging and exciting carp fishing really is. This year (2006) has been very eventful for carp fishing in the United States and is indicative of the growing interest in carp. Much publicity has been gained through such factors as Al St. Cyr winning $250,000's for catching a 43.18lb common carp from Town Lake in Austin, Texas during a tournament setup by The American Carp Society. As you can see, carp fishing has the potential to add a new dimension to the sport of angling in the United States and could someday rival bass as the most popular freshwater sport fish. The availability of carp and the water they inhabit will also help tremendously in the growth of this sport. Most people use American set-ups when they first get into carp fishing as a good selection of carp fishing equipment and bait is hard to find in stores within the United States, this is becoming less of a problem with e-commerce taking up this niche. Some of these stores have setup in the US and import the euro carp gear to sell online, while others will ship directly from Europe. A very few companies are presently manufacturing their own gear in the US, though this trend is likely to change with the future growth of this magnificent sport. This website contains information on carp fishing and tackle to hopefully help some of the void that presently exists in the US world of carp fishing. We hope to become an independent, educational, fun and social community devoted to the sport of fishing for carp as well as to introduce the sport to more people in the USA. If you would like to experience this sport and ever find yourself in Austin, TX use the contact us form that you will find linked from the top menu.
Wow what a day I just had. I got down to Town Lake for first light, this was going to be the time I tried out my new found knowledge I learnt from English Andrew. After our trip last Wednesday I got home and ordered a more powerful rod (12' Nash Venom 3.5lb test curve), some method feeders, some Buckeye Blend groundbait (from wacker baits), 12+kgs hemp seed and a ton more Carp Fishing gear. I want to point out last week I was saying to Andrew I have NEVER been snapped off by a fish on Town Lake. However I tried to order some 30lb Power Pro online to replace my 12lb monfilament (as the diameter is thinner on the power pro but the 12lb line is more sporting.) but Big Carp Tackle were out of stock, so I went to Amazon and ordered some there but it didn't qualify for Prime shipping hence I didn't get it in time for todays trip. This time I didn't forget to bring the sweetcorn. I mixed the the buckeye with sweetcorn and hemp and got it out about 5 feet from the second strutt of the bridge, setup my landing net (I always do that before I put a rod out) then proceeded to get the rods tackled up and cast. I was then setting up the 3rd rod and.. beeeeeeep 17lb common carp. Probably about 9.45 or so my friend Chris came down to speak about a new business he had just setup and needed some information about making the most out of his website. so we were chatting for maybe an hour before he had to head to work at Mother Egans, that's an Irish Pub on West 6th St. 20 or so minutes later I had another visitor, this guy was a bass fisherman from Denver, so we started chatting and then beeeeep another screamer. This one took off like a steam train, I got it within 20 yards of the bank - snap, the line broke, how is that for karma? I never even saw the fish and that leaves a hole in your stomach and a ton of what ifs in your head. If only the power pro had got here in time, what if it was a 40lb+, you get the idea. anyway I controlled myself in company and didn't swear until he had left. I setup again and cast out within inches of where I had just hooked the fish and a few minutes later the bite alarms sounded off again beeeeep, I thought wow I am getting another chance, again off it went and once again got it within 20 feet of the bank and within inches of where the last carp had snapped my line and yep you got it - snap another one gone. again, I never saw it, I can only imagine. I am thinking there maybe an underwater snag as it happened so close to each other both times. Anyway this time I was on my own and if it had been on TV it would not have been the bite alarms that went beep, if you get my drift. Maybe an hour or so after that I had a guy setup fishing next to me, I think he was after catfish. I got another screamer this one really tore off and I had an audience hanging over the bridge cheering me on, while I was playing this fish the right hand rod also went off like a steam train, I initially thought the Carp I had on my line had snagged but soon realised that was not the case, so I asked the guy fishing next to me if he could grab the rod before the fish tore off all the line or bounced the rod in the water. Well the people on the bridge were amused it was like Laurel and Hardy. The other fish was on my new rod (so I didn't get to christen it) and the fish I had was on my lightest rod (1 3/4lb test curve.) The end result - 18lb carp and luckily I had the biggest on my line 24lb, see below.
Went fishing this week with Al and we tore them up. It was a foggy morning and really cool time to be fishing. You couldn't see ten feet in front of you at times. We caught 6 carp that day and I caught my PB at 32lbs 8oz. Great day!!

Fiberglass fly fishing rods. Experts and beginners can use popular fiberglass fly fishing rodsin most fishing conditions. The durable material usually stands up to wear better than graphite fly fishing rods.
Graphite fly fishing rods. More expensive than fiberglass, lightweight graphite fly fishing rodstypically allow more accurate casting.
Action, the amount of fly fishing rod stiffness or flexibility, comes into play when you cast and when you attempt to reel in a fish.
Slow-action fly fishing rods. Reel in small lightweight fish with these flexible fly fishing rods. Slow-action fly fishing rodshave the most bend, making them difficult for beginners to control, but offer the greatest accuracy for short-range casting.
Medium-action fly fishing rods. Beginners find medium-action fly fishing rods easy to handle. They offer a little flexibility with the rod bending in the middle and at the tip. Use them for short and long-range casting.
Fast-action fly fishing rods. Stiff fast-action fly fishing rodsbend at the end of the rod and do not have a lot of give. They make a good choice for long-distance casting and reeling in large fish. However, they do not offer the accuracy of a short-action rod and beginners often find them difficult to handle.
Length also factors into fly fishing rod action. Shorter rods generally have less action than longer fly fishing rods because they generate less torque when casting and reeling. Beginners will want a rod long enough to provide a good casting distance, but short enough to maneuver in the water. Medium-sized fly fishing rods between eight and nine feet provide the action, casting control, and strength you'll need.
Short fly fishing rods. Use short fly fishing rodsmeasuring less than eight feet in tight fishing situations where trees, bushes, stream size, or other objects will restrict your movement.
Medium fly fishing rods. Use medium-sizedeight or nine-foot fly fishing rods in most fly fishing conditions. They allow for longer casting and can handle more weight than shorter rods.
Large fly fishing rods. Measuring more than nine feet, large fly fishing rodsmake the ideal choice for longer casting and pursuing big-game fish.
The stiff section at the end of a fly fishing rod helps strengthen the rod and can help you reel in a fish. Hold the rod against your body or the ground and use it as leverage when fighting your potential catch.

Today’.s avid fisherman spends on average $1,200.00 a year on fishing. We are always looking for ways to increase our hook-up. With the Rapid Release Rod Holder you are guaranteed to land more fish. This quick release design allows the angler to set the hook and remove the rod from the holder in one motion. Unlike the Cabela’.s Quick Draw where you have to remove the rod from the tube after setting the hook. This results in fighting the rod holder rather than the fish. The Rapid Release Rod Holder is a true break away rod holder that guarantees to release your rod every time. We believe in fighting the fish not the rod holder. Our Rapid Release Rod Holder can be mounted to any Scotty or Cabela’.s Mounting system with the optional universal adapter. Also adapts to the Scotty Downrigger with the optional deck mount. Rapid Release Rod Holders can also be mounted on gunwale and round or square rails, pontoon boats, Charters, trolling or drift fishing. We even have a model for shore (Surf) fishing. This is the worlds most diversified rod holder. And it is so strong we carry a lifetime warranty and it’.s 100% MADE in the USA.
Buy your rod licence now Any angler aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England (except the River Tweed), Wales or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland must have an Environment Agency rod licence. We do not issue online licences to eligible disabled or senior citizen (65 years and over) concessions at present. These can be purchased from Post Offices in England and Wales. Money from the sale of licences helps to fund our work managing fisheries. If you are caught fishing without one, you are cheating other anglers and could be fined up to £2,500.
* Salmon and sea trout licence covers non-migratory trout and coarse fish as well. Remember, if youre coarse fishing with 3 or 4 rods, you need 2 licences. These licences are also available from The Telesales Service on 0844 800 5386, or from any Post Office in England and Wales.
In its simplest form, a fishing pole, or rod, is a stick used to throw out a line with a hook on the end for the purpose of catching fish. Sport fishing rods vary in width, length and flexibility (action), depending on where you're fishing and what you're trying to catch. Basically, you want a rod that is stiff enough so it doesn't break when a fish is on your line. But flexible enough to absorb the tension of a fighting fish, so you don't break your line. Study up. Match the right rod with the right reel, the right line and the right bait to catch the fish you're after.
The eyes decrease in size from the handle to the tip, with the one nearest the handle usually much larger than the rest to allow less friction as the coiled line comes off the reel. Unlike bait casting and spin casting reels, the spinning reel hangs beneath the rod rather than sitting on top, and is held in place with a sliding or locking reel seat.
Bait-casting and closed-spin casting rods are designed to hold reels that are mounted above the handle. So the line-guide eyes are on the top and the casting trigger is on the bottom. They're made from graphite or fiberglass with a cork or PVC foam handle and tend to be between 5 and 8.5 feet (1.5 to 2.6 m) in length. They have anywhere from five to eight guide eyes to help control the line. The eyes decrease in size from the handle to the tip, with the one nearest the handle usually much larger than the rest to allow less friction as the coiled line comes off the reel. Longer rods, with elongated grip handles for two-handed casting, are frequently used for saltwater or steelhead and salmon fishing. Spinning rods are also widely used for trolling and still fishing with live bait. Bigger rods are used for bigger bait and bigger fish.
Fly rods come in a variety of sizes to catch anything from small freshwater pan fish to large saltwater game fish. Fly rods tend to have a single, large-diameter line guide (called a stripping guide), with a number of smaller looped guides (called snake guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of the relatively thick fly line. Fly rods are almost always built out of carbon graphite and the rod tapers from one end to the other. The degree of taper determines the amount of flex in the rod. The flex and length of your fly rod depends on where you're fishing and what you're after. Fly fishermen love to make their own flies. They also like to make their own rods. Custom rod building is a popular hobby with fly fishermen.
If you're trying to catch big fish, you need big equipment. Sea rods are long (around 10 feet on average), extremely thick and feature huge and heavy tips, eyes, and handles. There are different rods designed for surf casting and for fishing from a boat on the ocean.
Really short spin casting rods, varying between 24 and 36 inches in length, are used for ice fishing. But that doesn't mean you can't catch a large Walleye or Northern Pike through a hole in the ice.
Telescopic fishing rods are designed to collapse down to a short distance and open to a long rod. Twenty- or even 30-foot rods can close to as little as a foot and a half. This makes the rods very easy to transport. Telescopic fishing rods are made from the same materials as conventional one- or two-piece rods. Graphite and fiberglass or composites of these materials are designed to slip into each other so that they open and close. The eyes are generally, but not always, a special design to help make the end of each section stronger. Various grade eyes available on conventional rods are also available on telescopic fishing rods. Care for telescopic fishing rods is much the same as other rods. The only difference being you should not open the telescopic rod into the open position rapidly. Whipping or flinging open a telescopic fishing rod will likely make it difficult to close. Often the rods come with tip covers to protect the tip and guides. Surf rods are very popular rods as telescopic models. Carrying around a 12- or 14-foot fishing rod, even in two pieces, is cumbersome. The shorter the sections, the shorter they close, the more eyes they have, and the better the power curve is in them. More eyes mean better weight and stress distribution throughout the parabolic arc. This translates to further casting, stronger fish fighting abilities and less breakage.
If you want to catch smaller fish, or get more fight out of a larger fish, then try an ultra-light fishing pole. They're shorter (4 - 5.5 feet is common), lighter and have more flex than normal rods. Tip actions vary from slow to fast, depending on your intended use. Some ultra-light rods are capable of casting lures and flies as light as 1/64th of an ounce. Ultra-light rods are widely used for crappie, trout, bass, bluegill and other types of panfish.
Fishing rod tapers describe how much a fishing rod bends or flexes under pressure. Different tapers are used for different fishing scenarios as well as for personal preference.
Rod taper is important for several reasons. The feel for the lure being used and the fish being caught dictate the appropriate taper use. A fast action tip will be used when fishing jig type lures. The angler can feel and therefore control what the lure is doing quite easily. Since only the very tip of the rod bends, when a fish strikes the angler has ample rod shaft and backbone to set the hook correctly. In contrast to fast tapers, the slow flex rods offer the angler advantages when fighting large fish with light fishing line. This additional flex allows the rod to absorb the force of the fish as opposed to the line. This is often the angler who likes to fish split shot rigs or Lindy rigs for walleye.
A fishing rod is a device used in sport fishing that consists of a long pole with a line held in place alongside it with the use of guides. Usually the line is kept in storage on a reel that the angler spins to both take up and let out the line while casting. At the loose end of the line is a hook to hold the bait, either live worms and insects or artificial lures, as well as bobbers (or floats) and sinkers that keep the bait at the proper level in the water.
Describes a bamboo rod, with a silk line, a needle used as a hook, and rice as bait. In ancient Greece and Rome, fishing with a rod was already a common activity. In Homer'.s time, or around 900
Fishing with a barbed hook, rod and line were known. The line was made from either horsehair or finely woven flax. The rod is believed to have been made from Arundo donax, a plant native to the Mediterranean area and the largest of European reeds. It grows up to 20-30 ft ( us. m) long, and it is knotted. A plant known as ferula might have been the source for smaller rods, but cornel wood, a slender hardwood, or juniper might also have been used. The rod was jointed, either by tying the parts together with string, or tiny pieces of metal known today as ferrules could have been used. The bronze hook was not tied on. rather, the top of the hook extended over the string in a sheath to keep fish from biting through the line. Sometimes a piece of lead was attached to the hook to ensure depth, while fly fishing quickly developed when it was learned that some kinds of fish would eat flies off the surface of the water. The bait used in fly fishing was a piece of red wool with rooster feathers attached. The feathers presumably appeared as a waxy color to the fish, hence resembling fly'.s wings, and they helped keep the bait afloat. Anglers had no running tackle—.they had to pull the line in using force. Angling captured the imagination of Greek and Roman scholars. Plutarch wrote that a good rod must be slender and springy, because a heavy rod would cast a shadow and scare the fish. The line must not have knots or be coarse, and it should be white so as to match the color of the water. Dionysius wrote that an angler with two rods, four hooks apiece, and an assistant could catch more fish than a net, if good bait is used. Fishing rods changed only slightly for more than a thousand years. In England in 1496, a nun named Dame Juliana Berners wrote The Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle. This book described artificial flies, some of which are still used today, and rods 18-22 ft ( us. m) long with lines made of horsehair. During the middle of the seventeenth century, the fishing rod was greatly improved by adding a wire loop or ring at the tip. This allowed the line to be let out and pulled in easily. Lines at least 26 yd (23.8 m) long were mentioned by 1667. Such lengthy lines led to the development of the reel. The first reels were wooden spools with a metal ring which fitted over the fisher'.s thumb. By 1770, fishing rods with guides along the length and reels were in common use. Fishing rods were improved during this period by replacing heavy European woods with tough, elastic woods, such as lance-wood and greenheart, both from the New World. Bamboo from the East was also used. By the late nineteenth century, hexagonal fishing rods were made by laminating six triangular strips of bamboo. At the same time, reels were greatly improved. Horsehair lines were replaced by silk coated with oxidized linseed oil. During the twentieth century, fishing rods became shorter and lighter without losing strength. Bamboo was replaced by fiberglass or carbon fiber. Nylon became the dominant material for use in fishing lines after World War II, and plastic became used to make artificial flies. Fishing became an increasingly popular sport in the late twentieth century. Thirty-one million fishing licenses were sold in the United States in 1992, compared to 20 million in 1959.
Although some fishing rods are still made of bamboo, most modern rods are made of fiberglass or carbon fiber. The ferrules, which hold the portions of the rod together, are made of metal or fiberglass. The grips on fishing rods are usually made of cork, but are sometimes made of plastic, wood, or cloth. Reel seats are made of aluminum or other metals or plastic. Guides are made of chrome-plated brass or tungsten carbide and an alloy called nickel silver.
Fishing rods consist of tubular sections, known as blanks, and various smaller components attached to them. Blanks are sometimes made of bamboo, but most blanks are made from strong, flexible fibers, such as fiberglass or carbon fiber.
1 Bamboo is shipped to the fishing rod manufacturer in the form of hollow canes about 6-8 ft ( us. m) long and about 1.25-2 in ( us. cm) wide. The canes are split in half lengthwise with a heavy knife or a cutting machine. The interior of the split cane contains thin partitions spaced about 15-18 in ( us. cm) apart. These natural partitions occur at the points where leaves emerge from the bamboo plant. They are removed with a chisel or cutting tool. The bamboo may then be heated briefly to harden it. Some makers of bamboo blanks soak the bamboo with a liquid plastic resin to strengthen it and to make it waterproof.
8 Most fishing rods are made up of two or three blanks, allowing the rod to be disassembled for ease in storage and transportation. Usually the blanks are attached together with connectors known as ferrules. Ferrules are made from metal or fiberglass, and are attached to the ends of the blanks with strong cement.
9 Grips for the handles of fishing rods are made from natural cork, obtained from the outer bark of certain evergreen oak trees found in Mediterranean regions. They may also be made from synthetic foam rubber. The grip is attached to the end of the blank with epoxy glue.
10 Guides are small rings which are attached along the length of a fishing rod in order to control the line during casting. They also distribute the stress of the line evenly on the rod. The guides are made by cutting and bending wires of steel or chrome-plated brass. They made also be made from a combination of tungsten carbide and nickel silver. The guide is taped into position on the blank. Nylon thread is wrapped around the base of the guide to secure it in place. The wound thread is then coated with lacquer or varnish.
11 A reel seat is the part of a fishing rod to which a steel reel, containing nylon fishing line, can be attached. Reel seats are made from aluminum, chrome-plated brass, or plastic, then attached to blanks.
12 The fishing rod is packaged and shipped to retailers. The consumer assembles the fishing rod, attaches a reel, and threads the line from the reel through the guides.
Modern fishing rods are made using fiberglass or carbon fiber sheets. Coated with liquid plastic resin, the sheets are attached at one end of a steel rod called a mandrel. The mandrel is rolled between two heated metal rollers, known as platens, that apply pressure as layers of fiber are wrapped around the mandrel. The wrapped mandrel is heated, causing the resin to harden. Next, a pressurized ram removes the mandrel from the hardened fiber blank. The blank is lightly sanded to remove excess resin and to provide a smooth surface. It is then coated with layers of various protective materials. The blank is buffed between each coating to give it a smooth finish.
Testing of a fishing rod begins soon after a new design is developed. A prototype of the new product is manufactured and used to catch fish in a variety of outdoor conditions. The design is altered as necessary, and the process is repeated until the new design meets its desired goals. During the manufacture of the blank, the pressure applied to the fiber sheet as it is wrapped around the mandrel must be uniform, or the rod will be uneven. Protective finishings applied to the blank must be even and not too thick, or the rod will not function correctly. During the assembly process, all the parts must fit together correctly. Ferrules must be lined up correctly and must have the proper dimensions to allow the fishing rod to be assembled easily without being too loose. Guides must be spaced the correct distance apart. If they are too far apart, the line will sag. If they are too close together, the line will not move smoothly.
Manufacturers of fishing rods are constantly developing new products which enable consumers to cast lines farther and more accurately.

The future is likely to see this trend continue. Fishing rods are also likely to become more and more specialized, with each rod designed to catch fish of a certain weight. A recent development suggests that fishing rods may be very different in the near future. The Interline fishing rod, manufactured by Daiwa, has no guides. Instead, the line runs through the center of the rod and emerges from its tip. This revolutionary design avoids the common problems of broken guides and lines tangled in guides.

I bought the fishing rod to play with Rapala fishing. The front of the fishing rod obscures view for the wiimote camera. Because of this you cant navigate Wii menu or even use some function of the game such as putting the fish in your net after you have reeled it in. Luckily the front piece comes of. Which leaves only the added functiality of the nunchuk reel. Turning the Nunchuk on the reel is not easy and does not feel very natural to me. It is also a real hassle to unplug the nunchuk from the wiimote when installed since your fingers cant reach the nunchuck quick release buttons, I use a pen to do this. Not recommended.
Do not buy this as it is a worthless piece of junk. I bought it thinking it would give me an edge in fishing in zelda Twilight Princess and wii play's fishing but it doesnt as its nothing like a fishing rod and a wii remote on its own is so much better and it makes fishing even harder to do. Im never going to use it ever again and it will just collect dust!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!

Author. Martin BrinkmannLeaning how to choose the right fishing rod and reel is the first step in discovering a fun and relaxing new hobby. Fishing tackle is the term used to describe the equipment fishermen use to catch fish. The pole is the simplest piece of fishing tackle and may be made of inexpensive materials like cane and bamboo, or more expensive materials like fiberglass. When you choose the right fishing rod and reel to use, you need to consider what type of fisherman you want to be and what type of water you will be fishing in. Equipment failure when you are about to land the big one is not fun. Saltwater Fishing Fishing tackle for saltwater fishing cannot be made with any aluminum, steel or iron parts because the saltwater will corrode them. They must be stainless steel or nickel. If you are saltwater fishing inshore, use ultra-light equipment. For deep-sea fishing, much larger and heavier tackle is necessary. Ice Fishing Ice fishing requires specialized equipment. Rods between onef oot and three feet in length are used. Simple reels hold the line. Some ice fishermen choose to use tip-ups which fit over the hole they have cut in the ice, and when a fish hits a lever releases and a flag tips up and alerts the fisherman. Other Types Other type of fishing include still fishing, drift fishing, bait casting and fly fishing to name a few. There are four types of rods and reels to be considered when choosing the right fishing rod and reel for any of these types of fishing. Spincasting Spincasting is great for beginners . The rod has a straight handle and small line guides. The reel is attached to the top of the handle and the line comes out of a small hole in the cover on the front of the reel. Spinning Rods and Reels Spinning rods have a straight handle also, but the line guides are larger and on the bottom of the rod. The spool is not covered allowing the fishing line to release faster so it casts farther. Baitcasting A baitcasting rod can have either a straight handle or a grip like a pistol. The reel and line guides are mounted on top of the rod. line spool turns as you cast and must be controlled properly to avoid snarls. This is probably not the right fishing rod and reel for a beginner. Flyfishing Flyfishing tackle is different from all other types. The reel is used only to store the line. Rods are chosen by weight. Many people looking to buy a fishing rod simply show up at the local big box store and pull the first rod that catches their eye off the rack. Others search the Internet for reviews on popular upscale brands. Still others ask a friend, or in my case, write to me asking which rod to buy. Here are some basic rod facts that you need to know before you head out or go online to purchase one.
Inshore fishing means relatively shallow water and relatively small fish under 20 pounds for the most part. So, you need a rod that can handle a good size fish, but not one that weighs so much you cant even fish with it.
Casting Casting rods are used with conventional reels and can be used with lures or bait for light bottom fishing. They also accommodate floats and are good for free-lining live bait.
Bottom Fishing Either casting or spinning rods can be used for inshore bottom fishing. The water depth, current, and amount of weight required to get a bait to the bottom helps dictate which size rod to use.
Fly Fishing If you are reading this and you are a beginning fisherman, fly fishing may be the last thing on your mind. But, inshore saltwater fly fishing is extremely popular. If you do plan a first time purchase of a saltwater fly outfit, go with a prepackaged complete outfit in a 6 to 8 weight range. This is a good midrange starting point heavier weights are for larger fish (Tarpon, big stripers, etc.), lighter weights are usually found in freshwater applications.
Bottom Fishing These are the meat rods that many anglers have used to catch loads of fish. They are heavier and stiffer than a trolling rod, generally longer than a trolling rod, and are able to stand up to the abuses that a big fish can give them.
Fly Fishing Fly rods that are used offshore are built for punishment. These are the heavier outfits that have large arbor reels (reels that hold lots of line) and come in weights from 9 to 12. These are very specialized rods for a very specialized type of fishing.
Butt Length - The butt of the rod is the part between the reel and the back end of the rod. Casting rods will generally have shorter butts. Spinning rods will have slightly longer butts, and bottom fishing or trolling rods will have much longer butts. The length of the butt on a rod is dependent on how the anger plans to use the rod. Angler preference for comfort and ease of use is also in play here.
Extra-Fast Taper This taper has the upper 12 to 18 inches of the rod bending with an extremely strong butt section. These rods are generally more expensive, and offer precise casting ability on light artificial lures. They have the flexible rod tip to work a small lure but still have the strength to horse a bigger fish if necessary. Understanding the terminology and simple attributes of fishing rods can help you make a good choice when looking for a new rod.

Fly Fishing involves using an artificial fly or bait as a lure with a fly rod. It is not like spinning rod fishing, chuck and duck fishing, or any other kind of fishing. Fly-fishing has a long history, dating back to as early as about 200 A. D. Fly-fishing calls for a graceful method of casting and re-casting. In fly-fishing, the line and leader will have no additional weight attached. There are many fishing area that are restricted to only fly fishing, and if you are a beginner, it is a good idea to visit one of these locations. You could also sign up for some casting classes if you are new to the sport, even if you have had some experience with other styles of fishing. The essential gear needed for saltwater fly-fishing includes a rod, a reel, and artificial flies. The rod is the most important piece of fly-fishing equipment. The type of rod that you purchase should be dependent on the type of fish you are trying to catch and the bodies of water that you will be fishing in. There are many rods to choose from, and there is a broad price range. If you are a fly fishing novice, you are probably going to be starting out in small ponds and lakes where you will be fishing for small bass and trout, so your best bet is to get a rod that has a five or six weight fly line. Keep in mind that rods are weighted by the actual physical weight of the line, and not by pound test. If you are looking to make some big catches, such as pike or large bass, then you should seek a heavier line, around eight or nine weight. Logically, heavier lines can carry out heavier flies, and vice versa. Lines with weights up to fourteen are available, but you will not need this heavy a rod unless you are going to be hauling in seriously large species of fish. There are three weights, and sometimes beginners make the mistake of taking the three weight simply because it is the lightest, but in reality, fly fishing with a three weight is not easy because you wonât have optimal control, and a five or six weight will be a much easier to get started with. Second in importance only to the weight of the line is the length of the rod. The majority of rods are two-piece, although there are also some that are comprised of even more pieces nowadays. The average length is between eight and nine feet. A shorter rod would be a good idea, if you are buying for a child or even a small adult. Also, the most durable rod material is graphite, so avoid buying rods that are made of anything else.
Once you have made your rod selection, it is time to choose the perfect reel. If you are going to be fishing in exclusively salt water, then it is critical that your line is designed for saltwater use, not fresh water use. If you do not get a saltwater reel, even if you are diligent about rinsing your reel off after each use, your reel will break down and get ruined. Essentially, the reel is responsible for holding the line, so if you are a beginner and you are fishing in fresh water, an inexpensive click and pawl reel will work well. You may even be lucky enough to find a rod and click and pawl reel set sold together. If you are into a bigger game, you may consider investing in a reel that has a high-quality drag system, and will take as much as 250 yards of backing. Finally, you will need to buy your bate. Artificial flies are very inexpensive, so buy a lot before you head out, and look for the flies labeled for use with the type of fish you are aiming to catch.
Walleye Fishing Rods. Your Fishing Technique Will Choose Your RodYour choice of walleye fishing tackle particularly rods for walleyes depends on your walleye fishing technique. Walleye fisherman that try multiple fishing techniques every fishing trip will carry multiple type of walleye fishing rods, that are set up for either walleye lures, walleye jigs or walleye live bait. The following Walleye fishing rod recommendations will help you chose your rods best suited for your style of fishing. When you are looking for walleye fishing tackle particularly a Walleye fishing Rod for casting and trolling lures and live bait rigs from 1/4 to 5/8 once, select 5 1/2-to6-foot medium power, fast action spinning rods for your walleye fishing. The medium power, fast action spinning rod is generally considered a general purpose rod because of it's many uses. For casting small walleye fishing jigs, and other walleye fishing lures and rigs weighing 1/16 to 3/8 ounce select a 5-to 5 1/2-foot, light power, fast action spinning rod. This rod differs from the medium power rod because when you are flipping the rod in the back position right before you release for the cast, the rod will flex, giving you extra distance which is great for smaller size walleye fishing baits and lures. Make sure when you are looking for walleye fishing tackle for casting and trolling for walleye with large deep-diving crank-baits and live bait rigs weighing more than 1/2 ounce to select a 5 1/2 to 6ft, medium power, fast action bait casting walleye fishing rod because this rod has more backbone than most spinning rods, it is better suited for heavier walleye lures and rigs. For you live bait walleye fishing anglers, pick a 6 to 7ft light power, medium action spinning rod. This rod will cast much further than a shorter stiffer rod. The Walleye is a very finicky fish and are known to be very light biters. When you start your search for quality walleye fishing tackle selecting the right walleye fishing rods is very important, and you need to look for a rod that will feel the slightest twinge of a bite. You will notice when you start shopping for rods that the rods marked "fast action" will generally be much more sensitive, than the slower action rods. I would suggest that you purchase your walleye fishing rods constructed of graphite. These rods transmit vibrations and are very sensitive to the slightest bite. Other features that improve a walleye fishing rod's ability to transmit vibrations include a blank that extends all the way through the rod handle. one piece construction.and light weight, single-foot guides, ferrules and double foot guides add weight and tend to restrict the rods action. Just remember to follow these simple steps when purchasing quality walleye fishing tackle. They may save you some time, money and frustration. A luxurious fly-fishing rod, modestly priced at a little under $20,000. This rather interesting initiative comes to honor the brands founder and her documented passion for fly-fishing, as well as to bring a little glitz and glamor into the otherwise not-so-very-fashionable world of fishing. Chanels previous sports endeavors included a limited-edition quilted $12,000 bike (complete with a signature-quilted bike bag on the rear), as well as skis, tennis rackets with matching balls, and a boomerang. However, the luxury fishing rod has a very special history - and comes in very special packaging. This is a little description of the rod in question by UK newspaper The Guardian. "[.]the fanciest angler on the planet can kit himself out with a Chanel rod and a set of meticulously tied, monochrome Chanel flies, complete with the famous "double C" logo on the gossamer wings, presented in a rather fetching, quilted black leather box". Monochrome flies with the Chanel logo on their wings may sound a little strange - and also a little too much - however, lets not forget that we are talking about a high-end designer here with a taste for refined minutia, and designer sports accessories - even fly-fishing rods - are all about paying special attention to details. As a result, the brands fans will be satisfied at the chance to bring a little glamor on the side of the pond or stream, and wont mind the hefty price tag too much.
The most important thing about choosing a fishing rod is to get the one that works for you," says two-time Classic Champion, Kevin VanDam. Simply put, "a 'good' fishing rod is one that helps you fish effectively and efficiently with the lure you are using. "Too many anglers worry about materials, mechanics and names. Those things are important but the ultimate standard is to choose a rod that performs the task at hand properly. There's really no other way to judge a rod."He continues by pointing out that if you're throwing a small, shallow running crankbait, you need a rod with the proper action and tip that lets you cast accurately. Precise lure placement matters. On the other hand, if you're throwing a big, heavy deep-diver you need power and a rod that'll let you make long casts. Accuracy is less important. The same rod no matter how high the quality of its materials and construction won't do the same job. If you do use the same rod for both applications, one of them is not a good rod because it won't perform properly. That sounds great in theory but there's a practical, real-world problem with it money. Most of us can't afford to purchase a special rod for every type of lure we throw. We have to make do with what our budgets allow. What to do? VanDam recommends we start with three rods that are acceptable for most applications. He then recommends add-ons based on where we bass fish and our level of experience.
1. Start with a 6-foot, 10-inch, medium-heavy action baitcaster. That rod will handle most spinnerbaits, crankbaits, lipless crankbaits, jerkbaits and topwater plugs. 2. He also recommends we carry a 7-foot, medium action spinning rod with a high speed reel. That'll work for most finesse applications such as drop shotting, shaky heads and weightless worms.3. A 7-foot, 2-inch heavy casting rod will round out the arsenal. It'll manage heavy cover applications such as flipping or pitching, and it work frogs effectively. Those are the basics. They aren't all going to be perfect, but they're a start. Most lures, rigs and applications can be fished effectively in most parts of the country with one of them. VanDam stresses another factor that he believes is critical to fishing success compatibility. "Every company's rods are different. They all have different blanks, different handles, different guide spacing, different actions, different tips and a different overall feel. It's important that all your rods be from the same company. "Now, I design rods for Quantum. I think they're the best in the industry. I'd like to see you buy ours. But, if you like another manufacturer's rods better, you should buy them. And I mean buy all of your rods from them. Don't mix and match."If you're going to become a better bass angler you've got to be able to cast quickly and accurately with good rods. You can't do that if every time you pick up a rod and reel it takes you 10 minutes to readjust. You can't afford to waste that much time."If all your rods and reels are the same, you'll feel comfortable immediately when you switch outfits. I can't stress how important that is to becoming a better anger. It's critical, absolutely critical, that all your rods and reels are from the same company."VanDam says he can't recommend additional rod choices unless he knows an angler's particular circumstances. "I can't pick another two or three must-have rods unless I know where an angler's going to be fishing and how much experience he or she has," he explains. "Every situation is different. "In Michigan, where I'm from, there are a lot of shallow, clear natural lakes. And, we fish a lot for smallmouths. Long spinning rods are popular here. If you live in Florida, however, you'll probably need a heavy flipping rod, something that'll get you through the heavy weeds and vegetation."When I worked in my brother's tackle store in Kalamazoo R & D Sports Center I frequently recommended anglers not buy additional rods too soon. If you're new to our sport take some time and go fishing. Don't get in too big of a hurry. Find out what works for you and what techniques are popular in your neck of the woods before you buy more rods."Finally, a word or two about price. According to VanDam you generally get what you pay for with fishing rods. He says the biggest problem with cheap rods is that the blanks and actions aren't uniform. The rods vary from one to another. VanDam is an angler noted for demanding perfection in every product he endorses. His new Signature Series crankbait rods from Quantum will retail for around $150.
The RodMaker Why do you select one rod over another? Let's assume for the moment you are going down to your local discount store to buy a bass rod. There you see a large selection of rods to pick from. Your first decision will be to select either a spinning or baitcasting rod. Then what length do you need? What power do you require? And what type of grip do you prefer? How many guides should the rod have? Does the rod have the proper action? And finally, what presentation will you use the rod for? You might be saying to yourself, "So, what does all of this have to do with buying a rod for bass fishing?" Guess what? Everything, that's right, everything. All of these questions relate to how a rod will react when fished. Now, I have observed people looking at different rods in a store with no idea as to what they are looking at or for. They seem to pick a rod more for how it looks, rather than how it might fish. So let's examine the different types of rods used for bass fishing today. The first rod can be used for several applications - blade, spoon, or soft stickbait. This rod should be made of standard or intermediate modulus graphite. It should be a 6-foot casting rod with fast action in the medium to heavy power range. It should have 6 guides in addition to the tip. Of course, it would have your choice of grip material. The next rod we will look at is the heavy cover rod, primarily used for flipping pitching. This rod should be made from high modulus graphite such as IM-7. It should be a 7-foot casting rod with fast to extra fast action and heavy power. It goes without saying that any quality rod should have a guide for each foot of length plus the tip. What's next? Oh yea, the Carolina Rig rod. This should also be a high modulus rod 6-foot, 6-inch to 7-foot. It can be either a casting or spinning rod with fast action and medium to heavy power. Then there is the crankbait or balsa wood stickbait rod. This rod is ideally made of fiberglass or at least a composite. Just ask David Fritts what he uses. It can be either a casting or spinning rod, 6-foot, 6-inch to 7-foot, moderate action with medium power. Now comes the good ole topwater rod. This also should be a fiberglass or composite rod. The reason being is fiberglass and composites are softer and therefore more giving when you set the hook. And who hasn't jerked the lure out of a fish's mouth before. The topwater rod should be a 5- foot, 6-inch to 6-foot casting rod of moderate action with medium power. Oh boy, one of my favorites - the spinnerbait rod. Now, the spinnerbait rod should have a composite blank, 6-foot in length. Although casting is preferred, a spinning rod can be used. The rod should have moderate action with medium power. Anyone out there doing any smallmouth fishing? Well, here's a rod for you - the grub rod. The grub rod should have a graphite blank, 6-foot and use a spinning reel. It has fast action and medium power. How about the finesse rod? This should be a high modulus IM-6 blank. It should be a 6-foot spinning rod with moderate to fast action and light to medium-light power. This rod is used when the bite is light and you're using those great 4-inch worms. And last, but by no means late is the worm rod. Now. the worm rod is 100% graphite. It can be either spinning or casting, 5-foot, 8-inch to 6-foot, 6-inch with fast action and light to medium power. So there you are. Now, when you go looking for that new fishing rod, you will know what to look for in a rod. These are not trade secrets that I am giving away. But rather knowledge, the knowledge that every bass fisherman or woman should possess.

Many anglers call the home made pole a custom made rod.. I tend to disagree with that, since to me.. a custom made anything is made just specifically for one person, like my darts.. balanced and weighted to fit just me.. made by someone who is an expert in the field and for h eavens sakes, you certainly dont have to be an expert to make yourself a nice rod. Ive done a few myself, using what I had lying around, although its a sight easier to buy up the kits and work from those still youre not going to get the kind of comments you get if you use a length of white oak or a flexible branch from a skinny willow tree. The rod builders who are serious about their craft tend to look down their supercilious noses at the kits, but to be honest, Ive had good luck with them, Im a Pennsylvania country kid, whos first fishing pole was little more than a length of stick with a few screw in picture hangers on it and a length of line.. who am I to criticize.. To me, the kit makes a lot of sense.. I didnt know much at all about the components of a fishing rod and they all come in the kit.. whats not to love. The real issue with the kits seems to be that people feel its just a hand made rod no different than you could buy in a store.. Maybe so, but again.. maybe not.. You are the one whos doing it.. if you want to use some special glue, make sure every joint is perfect and every thing seats exactly as it should, that every component is absolutely perfect, or that the handle is a different color or wrapped differently, then youre going to have something that far surpasses the same thing thats been pre-made wont you? Using a kit doesnt mean by any stretch that you cant add your own personal touch to it.. buy components that are a bit different if thats what you want, aside from the kit, and add something extra, or take something away. You can change the wraps and the finish.. The only real down side, is that if you stick entirely to the kit, what you have, are parts of the rod that you didnt select.. someone else did.. the up side is that you have everything you need to make the rod, and once youve done one, it becomes much much easier to choose the components youre going to need the next time, by hand, from scratch so to speak so that the next one you makeand their will be a next onewill be absolutely and uniquely your own. The St Croix Rod Kit has everything that you need to build the rod and then some.. It comes with Blank End Cap Cork handle Reel seat Foregrip Winding check Guides Tiptop 3 colors of winding thread 5-minute epoxy (for glue) Rod finish epoxy to coat and protect winding Instructions It will be easy enough to build your rod without a lot of other things if thats what you want to do. The prices for the rod kits which ranged between 100 and 200, offered multiple rods and a few accessories. Cabelas also has a rod building kit and theirs start out a bit less costly, with the lower priced ones (granted, possibly not what you want) costing about 50 dollars. You can find those St Croix spinning rod kits here and the Cabelas Rod Kits Here.. To be honest, Im not sure I could have, or would have built my own first rod without using a kit to see whats involved, what I needed and what I wanted to get extra the next time.. so.. let them sneer if they must.. check out the rod building kits to get going in the right direction and then, when youre ready, go grab your own parts and do it completely your way.

We are currently seeking manufacturing companies to license, purchase patent rights or enter into a royalty agreement for this timely invention. The Fishing Rod Holder has a harness with straps, a body pad, and a fishing rod holder. The harness member is comprised of a waist strap and a bandoleer-like shoulder strap, each having buckle elements for adjusting the fit to the user. The fishing rod holder is comprised of a U-shaped tube-like element having apertures whereby the fishing rod holder can be securely fastened to the body pad using appropriate fasteners.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention in use. Shown is a physically challenged sportsman wearing the fishing rod holder harness. The body pad can be selectively positioned on either the right or left side of the user. The harness member can be adjusted to fit any size user by independently adjusting the belt element through the belt element buckle and the bandoleer like buckle element. The butt of the fishing rod can be inserted into the holder and selectively retained therein by engaging the compression-locking member using the pivotal L-shaped handle.
Figure 2 is a side view of the present invention and sportsman as shown in Fig 1. Shown is a physically challenged sportsman wearing the fishing rod holder harness having a fishing rod locked into the fishing rod holder. The fishing rod holder harness is comprised of a harness member, body pad member and fishing rod holder member. The harness member can be tensionally adjusted to the height and girth of the user using the appropriate buckle elements. The body pad member which provides a stable platform to secure the fishing rod holder can be selectively located on either the right or left side of the user. Once selectively located the fishing rod holder member is fixedly secured to the body pad member preventing further pivotal movement. Further more, the fishing rod holder has a selective locking member for increasing or decreasing the diameter of the rod holder.
Figure 3 is a side view of the present invention and sportsman as shown in Fig 2. Shown is a physically challenged sportsman wearing the harness and fishing rod holder. The fishing rod holder is comprised of a harness member, body pad member and fishing rod holder member. The harness member can be tensionally adjusted to the height and girth of the user. The body pad member which provides a stable platform to secure the fishing rod holder can be selectively located on either the right or left side of the user. The fishing rod holder being bolted to the body pad can be angularly adjusted and fixed secured by the bolt from further pivotal movement. Also shown is the lock-clamping member in the open position where the user can remove the rod for casting and work the lure.
Figure 6 is a cutaway end view of the rod holder showing the sides of the U-shaped tube. The shaft element passing through each side of the U-shaped member has an adjustable fastener fixedly attached on the threaded end for selectively increasing or decreasing the gap between the sides. Pivotally attached to the other end is the L-shaped lever in the open position which is determined by having the longest end of the lever parallel to the shaft element. The shaft element mounted spring forces the tube sides into a spaced apart condition. This configuration provides the user with a single means for selectively releasing the fishing rod from the holder while still maintaining the positioning of the rod within the holder.
Sometimes bad things happen to good fishermen. You make a long cast with a shock leader, say, and the knot catches, pulling the ceramic ring out of the tiptop of the rod. Now what? You've got to reel in the lure, cut the line to remove the ring (being careful not to drop it in the water) and use your fishing pliers to gently squeeze the ring back into the frame on the tiptop. Not fun. If you're prepared, however, minor incidents like this won't ruin your day on the water. Being able to cope with mishaps in the field begins with a repair kit. It can be minimal or elaborate, depending on your needs. Use a small lure box or a simple bag, like a zippered pencil case, to hold the contents. Include a variety of items, from a few spare guides to a stub of candle wax (for loose ferrules). More elaborate kits should include equipment for difficult repairs, such as parallel-jaw pliers and a spool of thread and bobbin, which can be used to rewrap a guide. Think of other times when you've had problems and add the appropriate repair items or tools to your kit.

I am trying to figure out how to adapt your excellent fishing pole holder into a forearm style crutches holder. Originally I was going to slip the ends of the crutches into a cut off plastic bottle and wire the bottle to the bottom of the bike rack supports. The crutches are only about 30 long. I thought I'd just bungie them to the top of the pannier rack where they touched it. Your device looks good. I've been making do so far with a quiver type arrangement with rubberbands and an old luggage strap but for a long trip thats pretty annoying. Do you have any thoughts for a better way to do this? I'm going on a 6 day tour Monday so it needs to be a quick weekend project or I'm back to the quiver carrier.
