Also, if you open an close the money clip without any cash or something to clip inside, it will scrape the other side of the clip leaving scratch marks on the other side. This was apprently the first time I opened it up and heard the scraping. As far as functionality, it seems to work ok (though this is only after 1 day of use). After clipping a stack of 5 credit cards, it kinda stretched it out and it could no longer securely hold a folded set of 4 dollar bills. I paid $25 for this clip and in my opinion that's way over priced. If you want something elegant, I'd recommend shelling out more money for something better cause the workmanship and quality of the finish really drags this down. I'd return it but I don't wanna have to deal with the shipping and handling.

I paid $25 for this money clip and it is exactly what it was described to be - a lightweight, titanium - money clip. I have been using it for approximately two weeks and have had no problems. The clip securely holds my five credit cards along with several folded bills. I was a bit disappointed in the weight of the clip, as it is much more lightweight than I thought it would be. I keep reminding myself that titanium is lighter than steel and just as strong, I just still have yet to adjust to the lightness. I tend to equate lightweight to 'not capable'.and this is not the case here. It is nothing fancy and is a very plain-looking. DEA Administrator Karen P. Tandy today announced the results of Operation Money Clip, a multi-jurisdictional, Special Operations Division coordinated, multi-agency Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation that targeted and dismantled an international money laundering and drug trafficking organization and resulted in the arrest of 83 defendants.

Money Clip case began with a single traffic stop in rural Kimble County, Texas and the seizure of U. S. currency. Based on evidence seized at the traffic stop, DEA was able to expand the case to 43 investigations spanning the nation.

Operation Money Clip has resulted in 26 separate seizures for a total of $4.4 Million USC, 2,526 kilograms of cocaine, 74 pounds of crystallized methamphetamine (known as Ice), 2.8 pounds of methamphetamine, 39,265 pounds of marijuana, and 1 kilogram of heroin. Today's enforcement actions resulted in the seizure of an additional approximately $300,000 USC, 1,000 pounds of marijuana, 2 weapons, and 45 vehicles. Five residences are pending seizure in Los Angeles.

Operation Money Clip was initiated in response to DEA Administrator Tandys directive, issued shortly after her arrival at DEA, to focus investigations on the abilities, methods, and routes used to smuggle large amounts of currency from the United States to the sources of drug supply in Mexico and other foreign countries.

Operation Money Clip clearly illustrates how money fuels the drug trade, and attacking these illicit profits is the key to dismantling drug organizations, Tandy said. By getting to the root of this sophisticated criminal organization, we have taken away their profits, their drugs, and arrested their key leadership. This operation ensures that these drug traffickers will never do business on American streets again and proves that, in order to defeat these large criminal organizations, law enforcement must be coordinated and united.

Begun in October 2003, Operation Money Clip targeted a Mexican-based poly-drug trafficking organization with ties to the Mexican drug trafficking Federation of Traffickers. DEA San Antonio and the Kimble County, Texas Sheriffs Department began the investigation based on a bulk currency seizure of over 2.2 million dollars. Through a complex and multi-jurisdictional follow-up investigation, DEA agents in 25 cities expanded the investigation and found that the organization allegedly laundered as much as $200 million dollars from various rural and urban American cities to Mexican targets over an approximately two year period. The ensuing investigation established that this organization allegedly distributed approximately 500 kilograms of cocaine, 200 pounds of methamphetamine, 20 kilograms of heroin, and 10,000 pounds of marijuana per month over a two year period.

Operation Money Clip is a testament to the spirit of cooperation and teamwork that DEA enjoys with federal and state prosecutors and with other federal and state and local law enforcement agencies. We've already shown you several ways to streamline your keys with a DIY flair, but reader Oliver writes in with his own inventive method for lightening his pockets by combining his keys with his money clip. I've recently enjoyed having a money clip rather than a wallet for trips out of the house because it doesn't weigh down the pant pockets as much. The next biggest annoyance was definitely the keys. It occurred to me that I could rivet the keys to a plastic store card (one I don't really want anymore) and include them in the money clip! It was really quite easy to make, simply drill two 1/8th inch holes in the card and put a 1/8th inch washer on the front and back (with the key contacting the card). Then use two 1/8th inch diameter rivets (1/4 inch long) to hold everything together. It's a simple idea, but if you're looking to get rid of your bulky keychain, it's worth a try.

Scott Amron's "Cash Money Clip" is an interesting take on money clips. a dollar bill with a steel plates stuck to it, one over a neodymium disc magnet. I'm a big fan of carrying cash in a clip (I gave up fat wallets in the back pocket and lower-back pain in favor of a small card-wallet and a cash-clip years ago) but I've never really trusted magnetic clips. It's cool to be able to stick teaspoons, small change and bits of metal to your front pocket, but your coins get stuck to 'em and you run the risk of demagnetizing your credit-cards if you absently stick your cash in the same pocket as your card-wallet. Still, this is just too much fun -- and Amron will also sell you a kit so you can convert your own currency to a money clip (you could probably do this without the kit just by shopping around for metal and magnets, too!). The magnet has to be an AC (alternating current) magnet to do any damage. I had two very strong disk magnets I did some tests with and they did nothing to Videotapes or Floppies. hard drives have their own magnets in them, why do they even work? It defies Science! I am more interested in how MANY bills this thing can hold, I carry my money like this and could really use a money clip, but I like to have lots of small bills, so the wad usually has at least 20 bills in it. Carrying Six bills won't do it for me

I had some friends back in college who had some giant hard drive magnets. They usually were stuck to the metal of the circuit breaker box on the wall, and took a couple minutes of hard wrestling to pull off. Once, though, they put the magnets in their pockets and walked around for an hour with various forks and knives stuck to the outside of their pants. It was pretty cute, but then one of them did indeed realize that he had the magnet right next to his wallet and his credit card didn't work the next day. So, even if this money clip isn't enough to do the trick, it is possible to wipe your cards if you are toting around a fierce enough permanent magnet.

Easy solution to wallet caused lower back pain. Switch to the front pocket. I prefer as thin and light as possible, but I still use a wallet over a money clip because it's harder to tell if/how much cash is there when it's sitting out on my desk.

My good friend had a magnetic money clip and he kept his credit cards in it. everytime i went out with him his cards got refused and they'd have to put it in manually.

I've never "got" money clips. When the money is in your pocket, your pocket holds the money together so why do you need a money clip? When you take the money out of your pocket, your hands hold it together so why do you need a money clip? When I want a thin profile, I just put some bills in my pocket.

How exactly does one use a magnetic money clip to stick spoons and small change to their front pocket? Last I checked most flatware and most American coins were not magnetic.

These "World's Thinnest Wallets" totally rock! I learned about them from KK's Cool Tools mailing. I have the compact "European," and it's almost paper thin. I didn't carry a wallet at all for nearly 10 years, until I learned about these. They're made from very strong "spinnaker sail cloth," essentially a paper-thin parachute-type material so they add virtually no extra thickness to your pocket. Highly recommended if you want super thin with the convenience of a real wallet, rather than a money clip. These are much thinnner than the magnets, in any case. I've had mine for a couple of years and it's still pretty much intact. A few threads have started to come loose, and I've trimmed them off. But I expect to get another year or so at least out of mine before I replace it with another of the same.

Well, first off, any magnet produces "magnetic lines of force". If a credit card sat stationary next to a magnet, you probably wouldn't have much of a problem. The problem comes when the credit card is moved across these lines of force. If you run a magnet back and forth across a credit card (or casette tape or floppy disk or video tape), it will "erase" it. Putting your credit card in and out of a magnetic money clip will do the same to the small strip of magnetic tape. DO NOT PUT CREDIT CARDS IN MONEY CLIPS WITH A MAGNET SILLY!! Just trying to help. As a result, it sticks out beyond the edge of the wallet about half to three quarters of an inch. The two free ends of the wire have spherical elements attached thereto to cover the free ends. The wire is folded symmetrically with respect to a straight base portion to provide a “butterfly-like” configuration. the base portion being “the body” of the butterfly, and the folded portions on either side of the base forming “the wings” of the butterfly. The flap is a substantially flat, disc-shaped member affixed to the base portion along a diameter thereof such that the base portion is substantially colinear with a diameter of the flap. A portion of the flap covers a portion of the clasping portion disposed adjacent the base portion and serves to maintain the correct orientation of the bills in the clip.

A money clip operable for holding one or more folded bills of paper currency comprising a single length of bent spring wire having two opposing free ends wherein each of said opposing free ends have a spherical bead affixed thereto, wherein said spring wire has a length of about 35 cm and an outer diameter of about 0.2 cm, wherein each said spherical bead has an axial bore therein with an axial bore diameter greater than or equal to said outer diameter of said wire and wherein each said bead has an outer diameter of about 0.5 cm, wherein said wire has a base portion defined as a portion of said wire having a length between 4-5 cm centered on said length of said wire and a clasping portion adjacent said base portion, wherein said clasping portion of said money clip is formed by bending each respective portions of said wire laterally disposed with respect to said base portion to make a first bend having a first bending angle of about 60″ with respect to said base portion, the plane containing said two free ends and said base portion defining a clasp plane. then bending said free ends of said wire toward one another in the clasp plane at a point located approximately midway between said base portion and said free end to form respective second bends with a second bend angle of about 45′. then bending said free ends of said wire in the clasp plane at a point disposed about one third of the way between said second bend and said free end to form a third bend having a third bending angle of about 135′such that said spherical beads are disposed adjacent to said first bend and said base portion, wherein a flap portion is affixed to said base portion, said flap portion comprising a discshaped, partially laminate member formed of two disc-shaped sheets of a flexible material adhered to one another on one half of the flap portion and separated from one another on an opposing half of said flap portion, said separated flexible material defining a pair of leaves that envelop a portion of said clasping portion disposed adjacent said base portion. 2. The money clip of claim 1 wherein said flap portion further includes visual indicia such as advertising imprinted thereon.

1. Field of the InventionThe present invention relates to a money clip operable for holding and organizing paper currency and the like.2. Prior ArtMoney clips are designed to hold paper currency in an organized folded condition, with quick access. It addition, they may hold credit cards and/or business cards. Some people prefer money clips for holding a small amount of paper money in a clothes pocket, since other money holders, including wallets, bulge the pocket. A money clip should be simple to use, hold the bills securely in a desired orientation, and permit easy insertion and removal of the bills. Examples of disclosures teaching the construction and use of such money clips are presented in U. S. Pat. Nos. 6,823,910, 6,453,236, 6,327,749, 6,082,422 5,913,618 and 5,697,131.A money clip may be used to hold either a single paper bill folded in half or a plurality of such bills. Many money clips that accept a large number of folded bills do not exert sufficient force to hold a single bill in the clip. After a clip has been extended to accept a plurality of bills, the material of a clip can exceed the elastic limits of the spring material and transition to a more or less nonelastic state and assume a new shape. The new distorted shape may provide less holding force on a small number of bills. rendering the clip inoperable for securely holding a small number of bills. As a money clip may be required to hold 1 to at least 20 bills, the clip must be adapted to be elastically deformable over a range of deformation required for storage of a large number of bills.

The present invention is directed to a money clip that substantially obviates one or more of the limitations of the related art. To achieve these and other advantages and in accordance with the purpose of the invention, as embodied and broadly described herein, the money clip of the present invention includes a length of spring wire (˜35 cm) having an outer diameter preferably ˜0.2 cm. The spring wire has two free ends. Each of the free ends is terminated by a spherical bead having an axial bore with a bore diameter greater than or equal to the outer diameter of the wire. While the outer diameter of the bead may be any size, it is preferably about 0.5 cm. The bead is attached to the free end of the wire by inserting the free end of the wire into the axial bore in the bead and affixing the bead thereto. A base portion of the wire is defined as a portion of the wire having a length preferably between 4-5 cm that is centered on the length of wire. The clasping portion of the wire is formed by bending the respective portions of wire laterally disposed with respect to the base portion to make a first bend having a first bending angle of about 60° with respect to the base portion, the plane containing the two free ends and the base portion defining a clasp plane. The respective ends of the wire are then bent toward one another in the clasp plane approximately midway between the base portion and the free end to form respective second bends with a second bend angle of about 45°. The respective ends of the wire are then bent in the clasp plane about one third of the way between the second bend and the free end to form a third bend having a third bending angle of about 135°. The bending procedure provides a clasping portion wherein the respective spherical beads are disposed adjacent to the first bend at the respective ends of the base portion. In essence, the money clip comprises a single length of bent spring wire having two opposing free ends wherein each of the free ends have a spherical bead affixed thereto. The spring wire preferably has a length of about 35 cm and an outer diameter of about 0.2 cm. Each spherical bead has an axial bore therein with an axial bore diameter greater than or equal to the outer diameter of the wire and an outer diameter of preferably about 0.5 cm. The wire has a base portion defined as a centrally located portion of the wire that is straight and has a length preferably between 4-5 cm. The remainder of the wire on each side of the base portion is bent in a plane that includes the base portion to form a clasping portion adjacent to base portion. The bending angles used to form the clasping portion may vary considerably. In a preferred embodiment, the clasping portion of the money clip is formed by bending each of the respective lengths of wire laterally disposed with respect to said base portion to make a first bend having a first bending angle of about 60° with respect to the base portion. the plane containing the two free ends of the bent wire and the base portion defining a clasp plane. The respective ends of the wire are then bent toward one another in the clasp plane at a point located approximately midway between the base portion the said free end to form respective second bends with a second bend angle of about 45°. The length of wire adjacent to the free ends of the wire are then bent a third time in the clasp plane at a point disposed about one third of the way between the second bend and the free end to form a third bend having a third bending angle of about 135°. In the clasping portion thus formed, the spherical beads are disposed adjacent to the first bends and respective ends of the base portion. A flap portion comprising a disc-shaped, partially laminate member formed of two disc-shaped sheets of a flexible material adhered to one another on one half of the flap portion and separated from one another on an opposing half of said flap portion, is affixed to the base portion. The portion of the flap portion comprising separated flexible material defines a pair of hinged leaves that envelop a portion of the clasping portion disposed adjacent the base portion. The flap portion preferably further includes visual indicia such as advertising imprinted thereon. The features of the invention believed to be novel are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. However the invention itself, both as to organization and method of operation, together with further objects and advantages thereof may be best understood by reference to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

A money clip in accordance with the present invention is shown in perspective view at numeral 10 in FIG. 1. The money clip 10 includes a clasping portion 11, a base portion 12 that is continuous with the clasping portion 11 and a flap portion 13. The clasp portion 11 includes a length of spring wire 14 (˜35 cm) having an outer diameter preferably ˜0.2 cm. The spring wire 14 has two free ends. Each of the free ends is terminated by a spherical bead 15 having an axial bore with a bore diameter greater than or equal to the outer diameter of the wire 14. The outer diameter of the bead 15 is preferably about 0.5 cm. The bead 15 is preferably attached to one of the free ends of the wire 14 by inserting the free end of the wire into the axial bore in the bead and affixing the bead thereto. The base portion 12 of the money clip 10 is defined as a portion of the wire 14 having a length preferably between 4-5 cm that is centered on the length of wire 14. The clasping portion 11 of the money clip is formed by bending the respective portions of wire laterally disposed with respect to the base portion to make a first bend having a first bending angle A of about 60° with respect to the base portion 12, the plane containing the center of the two beads 15 and the base portion 12 defining a clasp plane. The respective ends of the wire are then bent toward one another in the clasp plane at a point approximately midway between the edge of the base portion 12 and the free end to form respective second bends with a second bend angle B of about 45°. The respective ends of the wire are then bent in the clasp plane at a point located about one third of the way between the second bend and the free end to form a third bend having a third bending angle C of about 135°. The bending procedure provides a clasping portion 11 wherein the respective spherical beads 15 are disposed adjacent to the first bend at the respective ends of the base portion 12.The beads 15 disposed on the free ends of the wire 14 provide additional grasping strength when one or more folded bills 16 (shown in phantom) are inserted into the grasping portion 11 and the folded edge of the bills advanced into the clasping portion until the fold in the bills is adjacent to the base portion 12. It is found that after the bills 16 are inserted into the clasping portion 11 as described above, the folded edge of the bills 16 can rotate away from the base portion 12 while the money clip is in the user's pocket and may even come out of the clasping portion. Surprisingly, it has been found that the affixation of a flap portion 13 to the base portion 12 reduces the tendency of the folded edge of the bills 16 to move away from the base portion 12.The flap portion 13 is disc-shaped and comprises two layers 17 and 18 of a flexible material laminated to one another on one half of the flap portion 13, the laminated half of the flap portion 13 indicated at numeral 19. The layers 17 and 18 are separated from one another on the opposing half of the flap portion 13. To attach the flap portion to the base portion, the flap portion is placed over the base portion with the upper layer 17 above the base portion and the lower layer 18 below the base portion such that the base portion is adjacent to the laminated portion 19. A row of stitches or an adhesive is applied to attach the upper layer 17 to the lower layer 18 adjacent the base portion thereby sandwiching the base portion therebetween and affixing the flap portion to the base portion. The unlaminated portion of the flap portion 13 provides flaps that partially envelop the clasping portion adjacent to the base portion. The flap portion reduces the tendency of the folded edge of the bills to move relative to the base portion. While particular embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated and described, it would be obvious to those skilled in the art that various other changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For example, although exemplary dimensions suitable for a money clip have been disclosed, it is obvious to the skilled artisan that the dimensions such as the length and diameter of the wire, the diameter of the bead and the bend angles may be varied to suit other applications such as providing a clip for organizing lottery tickets, business cards or other paper products. It is therefore intended to cover in the appended claims all such changes and modifications that are within the scope of this invention.

Metairie, Louisiana A man in his late 70s returning from a night theater rehearsal was robbed at gunpoint, but luckily the victim had enough forethought to minimize his loss. Walking alone toward his car a male suddenly approached the victim from behind, grabbed him and put a knife to his throat. Give me your wallet, now. The victim replied, I dont carry a wallet, but I do have a money clip. He then slowly reached into his pocket and extracted the clip and gave it to him. The money clip held approximately $40 dollars. That way the victim didnt lose his credit cards, drivers license and other important personal information, which the attacker didnt know he had. This is a simple precaution, but one that, if ever needed, could save you a lot of headache and problems. Thats why I call it the Power Of A Money Clip. Acknowledgement. I've used these money clips for 30 years, getting a new one every eight to ten years. This simple tool holds my money and provides an excellent knife that is always available in an unobtrusive way. The footprint is tiny. 3 cm X 5 cm folded,13 cm long when both knife and nail file are open. Most other "pocket" knives are bulky and complex, but this knife has a slim profile (it's just a knife, file and clip). The blade is easily sharpened with any kind of small stone or diamond-imbedded file. It's not the highest quality steel but it's certainly good enough for my purposes. Because it is always with me, I always try to use this knife first for any task. Mostly I open letters/packages, but it also can be used for staple removal, as a mini screwdriver, scribe or awl, for removing splinters, etc. I work in the operating room as a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) and even there, with all the precision instruments, I've used this knife to cut off loose dressings (after the blade has been steam sterilized, of course).
