I chose styrofoam, ceramic, and stainless steel for my original comparison and looked at the material intensity and the greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of each, taking into account the fact that one was disposable and the others were reusable. My conclusion was that the production of styrofoam cups has a much lower environmental impact than the other two in terms of resource extraction and GHG emissions. But, since the styrofoam cups are disposable you need a new one every time you have a cup of coffee. The environmental impact then adds up until, at 46 uses, the ceramic mug becomes the environmentally responsible choice. And after 369 uses, the stainless steel mug also become a better choice than styrofoam. Ultimately the ceramic mug is the best choice since it is infinitely reusable and has a lower impact than the stainless steel mug (Although you could factor in the convenience and portability of a stainless steel mug with a lid).Now, to look at paper cups. Let's assume that a paper cup is used only once, weighs 20 g, and is made from bleached virgin wood pulp domestically. The material intensity factor for this material is 11.73 g per g of paper so the material intensity of our paper cup is 234.6 g. Using this new number along with the previous results I created a chart that shows the fixed impact of the reusable cups and the variable impact of the reusable cups (the x-axis represents the number of uses and the y-axis represents the material intensity in grams). This shows that styrofoam has a lower material intensity than ceramic until 46 cups and that 24 paper cups are equivalent in material intensity to a stainless steel mug. Hi Pablo, At my office styrofoam and paper cups are provided in the staff kitchen. Several of us have approach management that we should ask employees to bring their own reusable cup and stop providing disposable cups. Our management considered this but came to the conclusion that it wouldn't be as environmentally friendly as it first appears to be since the cups would need to be cleaned and staff would run hot water, using dish soap to clean the cups each day and then would use paper towels to dry them.which would be more wasteful than the cup. I am researching to put together a true cost comparison. Would you have some pointers?

Hello, I am a french reader of treehugger. ( sorry if i do a mistake with the language, please forgive me ). At "Rock'n solex", a student festival, re-usable and recyclable cup was distributed by a association "Ecocup". You lease a strong plastic cup (in PP plastic) for one euro wich exchange with a bar ticket for a new full cup at bar, ( they keep a stock). Then you let the cup after you drink, and recover one euro. The association wash all dirty cups for a other festival. The cup can be re-used in ash tray or other things. It is 20 at 25 less polluting than a disposable paper or plastic cup, or bio-degradable cup, and cheaper!!!! This idea appear in Germany since 15 years. Non Recyclable One of the greatest problems with paper cups are they are non recyclable. The plastic lamination which holds the paper cup in place makes it difficult to be recycled ( in addition to the other problems which have been highlighted here.) Even in a country like India, where 80 to 90% of the waste is recycled. For that matter the disposable plastic cups are better, in terms of recyclability. I think the best way to carry this forward and create a change (in the Americas, were Starbucks is so popular) is to force Starbucks to introduce ceramic mugs as far as possible. At least the people who sit in their cafes and drink can have coffee in ceramic cups( I really don't know, we don't have Starbucks here and what I assume is they give coffee in papercups at their outlets).

The present invention pertains to acetabular reamer cups and more particularly pertains to a disposable acetabular reamer cup. Acetabular reamers are surgical tools, which are used to cut hemispherical cavities in pelvis bones for the insertion of artificial hip joints. An acetabular reamer is composed of an acetabular reamer cup mounted on a tool driver, which in turn is mounted in the chuck or collet of a portable drill or flexible powered shaft. Acetabular reamer cups have a complex arrangement of precisely shaped cutting surfaces extending outwardly from an essentially hemispherical shell. Acetabular reamer cups are separable from their tool drivers for changing cup size prior to or during surgery, cleaning, and/or sharpening. Acetabular reamers must be capable of producing cavities with very close tolerances and must also minimize any risk of causing contamination. Acetabular reamer cups have precise dimensions and are light in weight and must fit on an appropriate tool driver with a minimum of free play and must be quick and easy to install and remove without tools. Prior acetabular reamer cups must be cleaned after each use. Thus, the desirability of a disposable reamer cup. Some previous acetabular reamers have used an open-bottom acetabular reamer cup gripped by the tool driver by means of a flange and slot and an opposed spring-loaded ball catch, like that on a socket wrench or socket driver. This presents a problem in that the catch tends to trap dried blood, which is very difficult to remove during cleaning. An additional problem is that unless tolerances of cups and tool drivers are made very close, at great cost, there is considerable free play between a cup and its tool driver. This increases wear and decreases the precision of the tool. An alternative acetabular reamer, described in U. S. Pat. No. 4, us., utilizes a convex-bottomed acetabular reamer cup having a large central opening complementary in shape to a flange on the tool driver. Since the tool driver also grips the cup with a clamping action, extremely close tolerances are not required to prevent free play between the cup and driver. The convex bottom of the cup eliminates any internal ninety degree angles which could catch contaminants and the large central opening permits easy cleaning. The acetabular reamer cup is, however, complex in shape and expensive and, like all acetabular reamer cups, difficult to resharpen and must be cleaned between uses. It is therefore highly desirable to provide an improved acetabular reamer cup. t is also highly desirable to provide an improved acetabular reamer cup which is disposable and fits on a to driver with a minimum of free play. It is also highly desirable to provide an improved acetabular reamer cup which is disposable and precise in size, light in weight and inexpensive. it is also highly desirable to provide an improved acetabular reamer cup which is disposable and quick and easy to install and remove from a tool driver without tools. It is finally highly desirable to provide an improved disposable acetabular reamer cup which meets all of the above desired features.

The disposable acetabular reamer cup 10 of the invention has a cutting bowl 2 and a plug 14. Cutting bowl 12 is substantially hemispherical in shape and has a spirally arranged pattern of outwardly extending cutting edges 16 and adjoining perforations 18. Cutting bowl 2 has a periphery 20 surrounding a bottom opening 22. Cutting bowl 12 defines an axis of rotation 24, which is perpendicular to a plane defined by periphery 20. In a particular embodiment, the material of cutting bowl 12 is 19 gauge (0.040") 410 surgical stainless steel, and both the bowl 2 and the cutting edges 16 are formed as disclosed in U. S. Pat. No. 4,811,632, the specification of which is incorporated herein by reference. Plug 14 occupies bottom opening 22 and is joined to cutting bowl 12. Plug 14 is concentric with axis of rotation 24. Plug 14 defines, in combination with cutting bowl 12, a hollow cup chamber 26. Plug 14 has a tool driver opening 28 concentric with the axis of rotation 24. In a particular embodiment of the invention, plug 14 is circular and fits tightly within cutting bowl opening 22, adjoining periphery 20, and tool driver opening 28 is hexagonal in shape. Tool driver opening 28 is concentric with axis of rotation 24. Plug 14 is retained in bottom opening 22, in a fixed position, by detents 30 and complementary intrusions 32. Each detent 30 is an inwardly extending portion of cutting bowl 2, which is staked, punched, embedded or driven into the intrusions 32 of plug 14. Plug 14 is joined to cutting bowl 12 solely by detents 30 and intrusions 32 and the friction between the cutting bowl 2 and the plug 14. In a particular embodiment of the invention, two to six equally separated detents 30 positioned adjacent to periphery 20 extend inwardly in a direction radial to axis of rotation 24 to a distance from about 0.020" to about 0.040". Plug 14 is molded of a polymeric material. In a particular embodiment plug 14 is a disk of a uniform thickness with circular cross-sections taken transversely to its axis. In another particular embodiment, plug 14 may have cross-sections taken axially of a variety of shapes. In one particular embodiment, disk 14 in crosssections taken axially, disk 14 is of uniform thickness. In another particular embodiment disk 14 in crosssections taken axially, is thicker adjacent driver opening 28 and periphery 20. In this particular embodiment, a portion of disk 14 between opening 28 and periphery 20 is "necked" down in cross-section thereby providing easy viewing into the interior of the reamer cup through plug 14 at all times. See FIG. 3. In another particular embodiment, as shown in FIG. 4, plug 14 has a crosssectional shape of a disk with a conical frustum coaxially joined together. Plug 14 is molded so as to form the intrusions 32 in the outer periphery 20. Protrusions may range from two diametrically opposed intrusions to six equally spaced or three pairs of diametrically opposed protrusions in the periphery 20. In a preferred embodiment, each of the protrusions from a top plan view have a rectangular shape with two opposed ninety degree angles as shown in FIG. 2 in dashed lines. The protrusions of this same preferred embodiment, when viewed in crosssections taken axially of plug 14, have a triangular cross-section with a planar sloping wall 34 extending from adjacent the periphery 20 inwardly and a planar orthogonal wall 36 extending generally parallel to the top and bottom surfaces of plug 14. Thus, intrusions 32 of this embodiment are wedge shaped. As shown in FIG. 2, the detents 30 positioned within intrusions 32 substantially fill the intrusions 32. In a particular embodiment, the plug 14 is formed of polycarbonate material. Plug 14 when in the shape of a disk is approximately 1/8" thick. In all embodiments of the acetabular reamer cup of the invention, each detent 30 is formed by staking, punching or driving the metal of the cutting bowl 2 overlaying the intrusions 32 into the intrusions 32 thereby deforming the metal into the void of the intrusion 32 substantially filling the void of the intrusion 32 and forming a detent of a similar shape to the shape of the intrusion 32. The polycarbonate material of plug 14 which is strong, lightweight, and transparent, having high temperature and impact resistance. An example of such a material is a polycarbonate sold under the trademark LEXAN by E. I. Dupont de Nemours and Company. The disposable acetabular reamer cup 10 of the invention is used in the same manner as other acetabular reamer cups, with the exception that because of its relatively low cost, the acetabular reamer cup 10 of the invention may be discarded after a single surgical use rather than being cleaned and reused. Several embodiments of the disposable acetabular reamer cup of the invention were destructively tested to determine the maximum torque which could be withstood by the reamer cup before failure. Conventionally, these cups are essentially spherical in shape with a radius from about 40mm to about 80mm. Six acetabular reamer cups of the invention, each composed of 410 surgical stainless steel provided with a 1/8" thick disk of LEXAN polycarbonate joined together by four equally separated detents and complementary intrusions as illustrated in the drawings were tested by attaching the same into a tool driver of the type disclosed in U. S. Pat. No. 4,811,632. The tool driver was clamped in a vise whereby the longitudinal axis of the tool driver and the axis of rotation of the acetabular reamer cups were essentially vertical. A 1/4" hexagonal machine nut was welded coaxially of each acetabular reamer cup. A conventional torque wrench was then applied to the nuts and each of the acetabular reamer cups of the invention were torqued until failure. The torque registered at failure was recorded. Half of the acetabular reamer cups tested were torqued in a clockwise direction. The other half of the acetabular reamer cups of the invention were torqued in a counterclockwise direction. The test results are indicated below. Failure occurred in each case by the plug 14 separating from the bow 12. All of the plugs tested failed between 300 and 342 inch-pounds. The average inchpounds at failure was 327.33 inch-pounds. The plugs tested failed as follows. Plug 1 failed at 326 inch-pounds in clockwise rotation Plug 2 failed at 342 inch-pounds in counterclockwise rotation Plug 3 failed at 300 inch-pounds in clockwise rotation Plug 4 failed at 340 inch-pounds in counterclockwise rotation Plug 5 failed at 336 inch-pounds in clockwise rotation Plug 6 failed at 320 inch-pounds in counterclockwise rotation The improved acetabular reamer cup provides a disposable reamer cup which fits on a tool driver with a minimum of free play, light in weight, relatively inexpensive and quick and easy to install from a tool driver. With the season for picnics and beach weekends approaching, chemists may have found a way to keep disposable cups, plates and utensils — so popular at birthday parties and many outdoor activities — from overstaying their welcome in the environment. What researchers have found is a special kind of soil bacterium that could change commonly used polystyrene foam — known as Styrofoam™ — into plastic that eventually melts away, significantly reducing the environmental impact of this difficult-to-recycle item. A study about this finding is in the April 1 issue of the American Chemical Society journal, Environmental Science Technology. While there is little recycling of polystyrene today, reusing other products can do much to protect the environment, according to Paul T. Anastas, Ph. D., Director of the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute. Recycling aims to eliminate the word “waste,” Anastas notes. “Waste is just something people haven’t found any use for,” he says. “You could look at a twig as waste, but a bird gives it new life when it uses it in building a nest.” He urges children and their parents to find uses for things they used to consider waste. “Recycled plastic soda bottles are actually being used to make fibers that are used in making clothing, for example,” Anastas point out. Worldwide, more than 14 million metric tons of polystyrene are produced annually, according to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. Most of this ends up in landfills. Although polystyrene represents less than 1 percent of solid waste generated in the United States, at least 2.3 million tons of it is dumped in U. S. landfills each year. Only 1 percent of polystyrene waste is currently recycled, the authors of the study note.

The present invention is a sipper cup for children composed of a disposable material with a molded hinge that connects the container body and cling lid of the present invention. The hinge serves the user by providing easy opening and closing of the cup, for filling or refilling purposes. The cling lid prevents the beverage contained therein from easily spilling and is outfitted with a sipping tip with aperture therein. The cling lid attaches to the container body via a locking flange and locking recessed channel that fit into and mate with one another. The sipping tip minimizes the amount of liquid spilled if spilling conditions such as knocking over or dropping the cup occur, making this device ideal for children. It's easy to be impressed by such numbers and it is even easier to show the horror of the anti green policy. But the logistics of using reusable glasses, collecting them, moving them, washing them and then redistribute them might very well be less green than using disposable cups and recycling them. In many cases the environmental impact of using disposable plastic cups is less than using glassware - glassware has to be cleaned, and that means energy consumption for autoclave temperatures, and dirtied water which includes detergents that ultimately end up in the environment since these typically survive waste water treatment. Plastic cups also weigh a lot less, so that's less fuel burned carting them all around the globe repeatedly. That said, I agree, they should just give you the can unless you specifically ask for a cup for ice. Something to keep in mind - most of the paper-style disposable cups can be recycled with paper/cardboard, or, even better, tossed into your home or work vermicomposting bin. They're quickly consumed. Ditto for the cardboard "sleeves". It's better in the long run not to use them, and to always skip the plastic lid, but if you have no choice, you can certainly keep them out of landfill and from littering the sidewalks!
Guiltily, I have to be honest and answer 1-2. I've got my trusty treehugger mug (a starbucks one, but I don't drink coffee -- I use it b/c it was a free gift). I do feel guilty when I get a quick cup at SB and throw the cup away only a few feet from the store (taking only moments to down a glass). What's even worse was last winter when I decided that my life was so rushed I started buying disposable cups to put my home-made latte in and run out the door. I am happy to say that I now wash and reuse my mug, but as a person on-the-go it is easy to fall into the disposable trap.

Growing number of customers are buying fewer paper shopping bags (48.6% in 2001 to 24.0% in 2004) at department stores and other large stores. returning more disposable cups (17.2% in the first half of 2003 to 30% in the second half of 2004) to fastfood restaurants and take-out coffee shops. The Ministry of Environment released the result of the second half of past year on March 25, based on the data from businesses signed the ‘Voluntary agreement’ for reducing disposable products (25 fastfood restaurants and take-out coffee shops) and the businesses joined ‘Voluntary Practice Declaration’ for reducing disposable products (31 department stores and discount stores). The ‘Voluntary Agreement’ is a system that applies to fastfood restaurants of more than 2846 square feet and take-out coffee shops of more than 1779 square feet to make them use mug cups instead of disposable paper cups and place deposits on take-out paper cups (refund the deposits when cups are returned). The ‘Voluntary Practice Declaration’ is a system that applies to department stores and large discount stores to lower the use of disposable plastic and paper bags. The businesses charge 50 won for a plastic bag and 100 won for a paper bag and refund when the bags are brought back to them. The sales amount of disposable cups stood at 32.8 million won (41,392 cups), and 9.86 million won amounting to 30% of the total was returned. Particularly, customers’ awareness that continued to increase each year contributed to the growing returning rate of disposable cups. The Ministry of Environment plans to discuss measures to control the use of disposable cups and raise the cup-returning rate through a meeting with related businesses in April, 2005. It also plans to have related businesses use the unreturned deposits for environment preservation projects such as recycling, and encourage them to post the result of used deposits on their home pages. A group of five different types of reusable and disposable hot drink cups have been analyzed in detail with respect to their overall energy costs during fabrication and use. Electricity generating methods and efficiencies have been found to be key factors in the primary energy consumption for the washing of reusable cups and a less important factor in cup fabrication. In Canada or the United States, over 500 or more use cycles, reusable cups are found to have about the same or slightly more energy consumption, use for use, as moulded polystyrene foam cups used once and then discarded. For the same area paper cups used once and discarded are found to consume less fossil fuel energy per use than any of the other cup types examined. Details of this analysis, which could facilitate the comparative assessment of other scenarios, are presented.

Weâve all read or heard of these studies that say that when you account for the much higher energy of manufacture and of washing a reusable cup, you might as well as use a disposable cup. You would have to use a hell of a lot of disposable cups, such studies say, before you equal the energy use of the reusable cup.
The Nova Scotia government has proposed a recycling fee for disposable cups, but the fast food industry is fighting the plan to charge a tax. The province estimates 300 million disposable beverage containers are thrown out annually in Nova Scotia. To help with the cost of dealing with those cups, the government wants to levy a two to five-cent per cup "tax". The government officials reponsible for recycling appeared before a legislature committee Wednesday. But members of the fast food industry walked away when they were presented with a plan to make them pay for litter. "It's a significant problem and we had high hopes the industry would come along on a voluntary basis," says Derrick Firth of the Resource Recovery Fund. The industry says the plan is impractical. "It's going to include dixie cups at the dentists. How would you enforce this? This is a nightmare. and they're going to end up in the landfill any way," says Luc Erjavec of the Canadian Restaurant Association. Tire tax paid for tires to be burned There's no guarantee from the government the cups will be recycled. The money is to help it clean up the mess. Critics say the province only has to look at its tire tax levied to cover recycling costs. Nova Scotians have been paying three million dollars a year since 1999 and not one tire has been recycled. In fact, 720,000 of them have been sent out of province to be bruned. The province's environment minister would not address the question of directing the money for recycling purposes. According to some public opinion polls, half the people say they wouldn't mind paying the tax while others are skeptical of where the money is going.
We often look at the arguments for greener options in our lives, and wonder - just because it's greener how much energy did it take to produce this green product? How long do we have to use this greener option to make it truly green? It is a question that Single Serve Coffee has been looking at for years, and we've finally found said answer. A Dutch study that demonstrated that we have to drink a lot of coffee out of our ceramic cup to beat out the paper or polystyrene one. Now a new study from the University of Victoria confirms this feeling that greener isn't always greener (or at least not right away). According to Adharanand Finn in the Guardian, one needs to use the ceramic cup over 1,000 times to outdo the polystyrene cup, and even more compared to paper. It may not sound very plausible - but on closer inspection the arguments seem to add up. Firstly, ceramic cups use more energy in their production. Second, there is all the hot water and washing-up liquid used when you wash up your mug. Third there's the environmental consequences of distributing ceramic mugs - because they are bigger and heavier than polystyrene cups, which can be tightly stacked, you are looking at more ship and lorry journeys, using more fuel. And, finally, polystyrene cups can be more easily recycled. So hang on to your ceramic or stainless steel mug and in three or four years you will have made a difference. I think it's important to note that both the Dutch study and the study from U. Victoria evaluate the energy impact of these coffee cups, and not the overall environmental footprint. Naturally, a reusable cup made of ceramic, plastic, or steel will be more energy intensive upfront. But that energy is made up over it's entire lifespan. Similarly, a reusable cup is more eco-friendly in terms of waste and garbage created, natural resources consumed, and greenhouse gases emitted. Once ALL the eco-areas are factored in, we find that reusable cups become more eco-friendly after a handfull of uses. Don't focus entirely on energy to the detriment of other eco-areas that are just as important. Drink your coffee responsibly, and bring your own reusable cup. Here's a life-cycle energy analysis on reusable vs. disposable cups -another data set to look at would be from washing a cup in the sink (I have a dishwasher and never wash cups in it) but that said, a lot of people use a dishwasher for everything. There are other factors like soap production, transportation costs, etc too, but then it would be really confusing. It's interesting to note that a ceramic cup takes 1,000 uses to break even with foam cups. so, about 3 years if you use a cup every day - that's not so bad -- perhaps someone could make a line of coffee cups that say "use me for 3 years to recoup the energy costs" it would make the cup more important and more heirloom-like. People would try and save the cup for as many years as possible to be efficient. Maybe bight green cups with the date of creation on the bottom. Someone tell treehugger. If a cup lasts only ten uses, then each use gets "charged' for one-tenth of the manufacturing energy. If it lasts for a hundred uses, then each use gets charged for only one-hundredth of the manufacturing energy. But in order to reuse a cup, it has to be washed. What is the energy usage of the trucks driving the styrofoam cups to walmart, and then all the consumers driving to walmart to pick up the cups. How about the energy for the packaging of the disposables over the packaging of the more durable cups. I think the bottom line is that waste is waste. As a modern society we will always be increasing our demand for energy to maintain a modern lifestyle. That is why the solution is going to involve cleaner and more renewable forms of energy. for myself I'm glad I don't suffer the irritation of finding a new low energy cup each and everytime I want more coffee
For the individual, the cost-benefit analysis of reusable vs disposable is very complex, as other posters have noted. However as a freelancer I've worked at a couple of very huge corporations with subsidized cafeteria. There I noticed people used disposable cups even when eating in, and in spite of ceramic cups being available. in that situation its hard to see how the disposables could win up against the economies of scale enjoyed by the high capacity and presumably more efficient washers. In a kitchen serving several hundreds, if not thousands of beverages a day, a cup would hit the break-even point in weeks if not days. I think definitely corporate american kitchens could make more of an effort (like a surcharge for disposable service ware).
When using disposable cups the second use does require twice the energy as the first use, the third use requires 3 times the energy as the first use, because you have to use 3 cups. so 3 uses require 3 times the energy to produce.
BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to a detachable cup handle adapted for securing to a disposable cup to make it more convenient for carrying by hand. In hospitals, offices, factories, public facilities, etc., disposable paper or plastic cups are frequently provided for holding drinking water from, for example, a drinking fountain. In order to minimize manufacturing cost, regular disposable cups do not have a handle for carrying. A disposable cup with no handle is not suitable for holding hot water, because heat is directly transmitted through the thin wall of the cup to the user's hand, causing discomfort to the user's hand or even scalding. The present invention has been accomplished in view of the above circumstances. It is the main object of the present invention to provide a detachable cup handle which can be conveniently and detachably fastened to a disposable cup to make the cup more convenient for carrying by hand. It is another object of the present invention to provide a detachable cup handle which permits the user to carry a disposable cup for holding hot water without touching the cup body directly. According to one aspect of the present invention, the detachable cup handle comprises a curved hand grip section for the holding of the hand, a vertical support section extended from a bottom end of the hand grip section and adapted for attaching to the periphery of the disposable cup to support the cup handle, and a retainer section extended from a top end of the hand grip section and defining with a top end of the support section a clamping space for clamping on the rim of the disposable cup. According to another aspect of the present invention, the disposable cup handle is injection molded from plastic so that its manufacturing cost is low. According to still another aspect of the present invention, a stick extends downwardly from the bottom end of the support section, such that the detachable cup handle can be used as a stirrer for stirring, for example, sugar in tea. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTReferring to FIGS. 1 and 2, a detachable cup handle in accordance with the present invention is adapted for securing to a disposable cup to make it convenient for carrying by hand, comprising a hand grip section 1, a support section 2, and a retainer section 3. The detachable handle is preferably injection molded from plastic for the advantage of low manufacturing cost. The hand grip section 1 comprises a front connecting portion 14 at one end connected to one end of the retainer section 3, a rear connecting portion 15 at an opposite end connected to one end of the support section 2, a curved bearing portion 13 connected between the rear connecting portion 15 and the front connecting portion 14 and defining with the support section 2 a space 11, and a thumb rest portion 12 horizontally connected between the front connecting portion 14 and the curved bearing portion 13.The retainer section 3 comprises a U-shaped wall portion with an angle wall portion 32 extended vertically upwardly from the front connecting portion 14 of the hand grip section 1 (defining a first leg of the U-shaped wall), and then turned horizontally forwards (defining a base of the U-shaped wall), a smoothly curved flange 311 (defining a second leg of the U-shaped), a vertical clamping wall portion 31 connected between the angle wall portion 32 and the smoothly curved flange 311, and a transverse rib 321 raised from the angle wall portion 32 at an inner side adjacent to the vertical clamping wall portion 31.The support section 2 is vertically extended from the rear connecting portion 15 of the hand grip section 1, having a top end terminating in substantially arched clamping wall portion 21 and inserted into the space defined between the vertical clamping wall portion 31 and angle wall portion 32 of the retainer section 3. The arched clamping wall portion 21 has a front side 211 spaced from the vertical clamping wall portion 31 of the retainer section 3 by a clamping space 20, and a top edge 212 spaced from the transverse rib 321 of the retainer section 3 by a gap 30.Referring to FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, when in use, the detachable handle is fastened to a disposable cup 4 by forcing the rim 41 of the disposable cup 4 into the clamping space 20 between the arched clamping wall portion 21 of the support section 2 and the vertical clamping wall portion 31 of the retainer section 3, permitting the support section 2 to be closely attached to the periphery of the disposable cup 4. When installed, the top edge 212 of the arched clamping wall portion 21 of the support section 2 abuts the bottom side 411 of the rim 41 of the disposable cup 4, the transverse rib 321 abuts an outer side 412 of the rim 41 of the disposable cup 4, and curved flange 311 of the vertical clamping wall portion 31 of the retainer section 3 is clamped on the inside wall of the disposable cup 4. When holding the disposable cup 4, the thumb 52 is pressed on the thumb rest portion 12 of the hand grip section 1, the forefinger 51 is inserted through the space 11, and the middle finger 53 is stopped at an outer side of the bearing portion 13 of the hand grip section 1. The lifetime needed for the energy per use of a reusable cup to become less than for a disposable cup, is called the 'break-even point." In Table 2, the break-even matrix shows how many uses are required for each reusable cup to do better than either disposable cup. The results are extremely sensitive to the amount of energy the dishwasher requires for cleaning each cup. Hocking's choice for the dishwasher, requiring 0.18 MJ/cup-wash, is barely less than the manufacturing energy of the foam cup, 0.19 MJ/cup. If Hocking had chosen even a slightly less energy-efficient dishwasher as his standard, then the reusable cups would never have broken even with the foam cup. The lesson of this life-cycle energy analysis is that the choice between reusable and disposable cups doesn't matter much in its overall environmental impact. One should use one's best judgement. Indeed, in situations where cups are likely to be lost or broken and thus have a short average lifetime, disposable cups are the preferred option.

A paper cup is a disposable cup made out of paper and often lined with plastic or wax to prevent liquid from leaking out or soaking through the paper.
Based on these concerns, and as paper goods (especially after the 1908 invention of the Dixie Cup) became cheaply and cleanly available, local bans were passed on the shared-use cup. One of the first railway companies to use disposable paper cups was the Lackawanna, which began using them in 1909. By 1917, the public glass had disappeared from railway carriages, replaced by paper cups even in jurisdictions where public glasses had yet to be banned.
Dixie Cup is the brand name for a line of disposable paper cups that were first developed in the United States in the early 20th century. While they were undoubtedly novel and profitable, they were also seen as a way to improve public hygiene.
