A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible form of ruler. It consists of a ribbon of cloth, plastic, fiber glass, or metal strip with linear-measurement markings with metric units and sometimes additionally imperial units. It is a common measuring tool. Its flexibility allows for a measure of great length to be easily carried in pocket or toolkit and permits one to measure around curves or corners. Today it is ubiquitous, even appearing in miniature form as a keychain fob, or novelty item. Surveyors use tape measures in lengths of over 100m (300+ft).
Tape measures that were intended for use in tailoring or dressmaking were made from flexible cloth or plastic. Today, measuring tapes made for sewing are made of fiberglass, which does not tear or stretch as easily
Measuring tapes designed for carpentry or construction often use a stiff, curved metallic ribbon that can remain stiff and straight when extended, but retracts into a coil for convenient storage. This type of tape measure will have a floating tang on the end to aid measuring. The tang will float a distance equal to its thickness, to provide both inside and outside measurements that are accurate. A tape measure of 25 or even 100 feet can wind into a relatively small container.
The design on which most modern spring tape measures are built was patented by a New Haven, Connecticut resident called Alvin J. Fellows on 14 July 1868. According to the text of his patent, Fellows' tape measure was an improvement on other versions previously designed.
The spring tape measure has existed since Fellows' patent in 1868, but did not come into wide usage until the early 1940s, when it slowly began to supplant a common folding wooden design of carpenter's ruler.

At least one tape measure should be in the toolbox of every homeowner or renter. It is an inexpensive and handy device that has many uses when building, maintaining, and repairing a home or auto.
A tape measure is a portable measurement device used to quantify the size of an object or the distance between objects. The tape is marked along the tape edge in inches and fractional inches, typically in quarter-, eight-, sixteenth-inch increments. Some tape measures are marked in millimeters, centimeters, and meters on one edge.
The most common tape measures are 12 feet, 25 feet, or 100 feet in length. A 12-foot tape measure is handiest for consumers. The 25-foot length is called a builder's tape and is marked in feet and at 16-inch increments to make measuring the standard distance between wall studs easier. The 100-foot tape, usually of reinforced cloth, is useful for determining property boundaries and other exterior measurements.
Tape measures are relatively safe and easy to use. Extend the tape from point to point placing the end-clip at the location you want to measure from. Most tape measures have a clip that can be attached to a fixed object to measure spans easily. Many steel blade tapes have tension-control brakes that lock the blade in place for measuring spans. Longer tapes have a crank on the side of the case to retract the cloth tape.
Tape measures are virtually maintenance free. To extend their life, keep the measurement blade clean and don't retract the blade into the case too fast.
Product Description Track all of your body measurements and progress as your muscles grow and your unwanted fat goes away. This is the perfect complement to the Accu-Measure brand of Body Fat Calipers. (However, if you want a MyoTape for FREE, it comes copacked with the purchase the FatTrack GOLD Digital Body Fat Caliper from AccuFitness.) Product Description Track your body measurements and progress as your muscles grow and your unwanted fat goes away!
As a tape measure, it does what it says it does. You press a button and the tape tightens around your body part. You won't have to worry about, "Did I hold the tape tigher last time?" as the tension is always the same for consistent measurements every time. The tape starts measurement at 2" since the tape casing holds the tape and that part measures around 2 inches. I think this tape is accurate plus-or-minus half-an-inch but it sure beats a regular tape measure since at least the button ensures that each time the tape wraps around you at the same tension level.
One challenge we have when we lose weight is that sometimes it might look like we've hit a plateau. Really, this usually means the body is slimming down but as we convert from fat to muscle we aren't "loosing weight" at the moment. A tape measure can help show this! I've used several different kinds of tape measures in the past. Usually the problem is you're trying to hold the two ends of the tape measure in place while figuring out what they say. Often I have to call in my boyfriend to help out. For a variety of reasons there are many people who cannot or do not want help in this area.) That's where the MyoTape tape measure comes in. I actually got this for myself solely because I had lost my old tape measures and needed one, and it was the top result on Amazon and looked easy to use. So I wasn't out seeking a "new and improved" tape measure. That being said, when I got this in the house I was really impressed that it WAS much easier to use than my previous ones. You hold the handle, which is nice and solid and well shaped to grab onto. Then if you want you can "make the loop" and step into it, or pull the loose end around, depending on what part of you you are measuring. But the nice thing is you can keep everything loose while you get it into place. Once you are close to where you want it to be, you push the button on the unit and it automatically snugs up. So you don't have to try to hold it in a certain spot or try to make sure you're holding it "tightly enough" or "loose enough". It always snugs up to the same level of tension. You only need to hold with one hand because the unit has connected into its closed loop. This means it's VERY easy to then look at the numbers and see what the total measurement is. You don't have to add or subtract - the unit is set up so that the number you see is the total number. Well recommended! There are ALL sorts of situations where you "seem to be not losing weight" but really your body is getting slimmer. This is a great way to keep track of your progress!
It works exactly how it should. And I'm going to respond to some comments that almost caused me not to buy the thing. 1. Can't get an accurate measure because of 1" intervals. a) You're using it wrong. The intervals are to keep it from recoiling on it's own as you're pulling it out. When you press the button to recoil, there are no intervals. (hint. read the directions) Also, this gave the same measurements as a standard tape measure. 2. Broken out of the box, bad clicking noise. a) It's a feature, not a defection. See answer above. You can also hold the button as you pull it out to avoid the clicking, but release the button when you're done so it doesn't recoil before you're ready. 3. The pin keeps falling out. a) I don't know if it was the company's intention, but I see this as a feature. The only time it pops out is if the tape isn't straight and/or flush, which would give an inaccurate measurement anyway.
It's easy to take measurements now! I really like this MyoTape Body Tape Measure. It's easier to take those difficult measurments. Just hook the end of the tape measure into the slot and push a button to tighten.
No more fumbling! Finally I can get an accurate measurment without fumbling with a roll of tape and dealing with the pain to re-roll it. This makes taking BMI measurments a cinch!
MyoTape This product is great- it's nice to have consistency in my measurements, so that clients know when they're making good progress and when they need to bump it up a little.
Great little tape measure Easy to use and provides a consistent reading which is very helpful when trying to track weekly or monthly progress.
Nice tape measure for it's purpose This device does exactly what it was meant to do and does it well. It is a rather cheaply made device and I don't know how long the spring mechanism will last, but for occasional.

A tape measure is a must-have tool for sewing. Having more than one and carrying one in your purse is not uncommon!
Description. A sewing tape measure is a non-stretchable flexible strip usually marked with inches on one side and centimeters on the other. Use. Taking body measurements is the most common use of a tape measure but it can be used for any measuring task. Because it is flexible but firm, it can stand on its edge and measure the distance around an item, such as a circle. Care & Maintenance. Tape measures require very little maintenance. Simply keeping it clean and using it for measuring will preserve a tape measure for years. If the kids were to get a hold of it for a game of tug-of-war, be sure to check the accuracy of the markings just in case it did manage to stretch. Available Options. The size of the markings, the width of the tape measure and auto retractable are a few of the options available. Expense. Tape measures are a very inexpensive sewing tool. Sometimes they are even given away at store openings or other promotional opportunities. A retractable tape measure for your purse is not an expensive investment and you will find many uses for it when you are out and about.
Ast month, where she also showed her Pins Thread project. See our earlier story. Debbie, who graduated in textile design this year, uses techniques like knitting, knotting, basket making and origami. The following is from Debbie Smyth. Debbie Smyth’s work rises to the challenge of employing a variety of skills and techniques to transform unusual and unorthodox materials and objects into playful yet sophisticated pieces. Employing an array of mechanisms, she folds, collapses, inflates and interlocks her materials to transform two dimensional lines and planes into three-dimensional shapes and space. The designs are the result of detailed explorations both in terms of visual inspirations and material qualities. The processes and mechanisms are seldom hidden but openly displayed to reveal the story of their transformation. Drawing upon traditional techniques, which include knitting, knotting, basket making and origami, combined with exciting new technologies such as laser welding, she conjures up structures that reside on the imagined boundary between sculpture and constructed textiles. Precise folds, calculated angles and measured lengths combine in multiples of interlocking knots to transform the familiar builder’s tape measure into an alien three-dimensional form. Myriad pins and lines of thread are given a new lease of life as floating linear structures. Each one plotted and measured accurately to depict the hated obtrusion of the electricity pylon which themselves are floating lines in space. Suspended interlocking stitched and printed units are mechanisms of movement and change as they play with power of pattern to emerge as light and shadow. The newly created forms can then take on a life of their own, as happy decorating 21st century interiors as featuring in fashion shoots. unique gifts at one scale, gallery installations at another.

Carpenters, woodworkers and others involved in the construction of structures, furniture and other goods typically rely on some form of measuring tool in laying out the dimensions of the object being constructed. Perhaps the most common tool of this sort is the tape measure. Despite its popularity, however, the typical tape measure is not always easy to use, given the frequency and typical conditions of use. For instance, carpenters must often take several measurements in multiple directions from one position. As a result, many of the measurements must be read "upside-down" as tape measures are frequently marked in only one orientation. Furthermore, measurements must often be made in many different intervals, i. e., eighths or sixteenths of an inch. A typical tape measure may use very similar markings between such intervals, increasing the risk of an erroneous reading. In construction, measurements are typically made in a single unit, such as inches. Nonetheless, many tape measures are marked in mixed units, such as feet and inches, further increasing the risk of erroneous readings. Users must frequently identify some fraction of an overall measurement, e. g., a carpenter may need to know the center-point of board he or she has just measured. Tape measures typically do not provide mechanisms for readily identifying such a fraction. Some measurements made during construction occur on regularly repeating intervals, such as laying studs on sixteen or twenty-four inch centers. It would be desirable to provide a tape measure that easily allows these repetitive measurements to be made.
FIG. 1 is a front view of a first portion of an illustrative embodiment of the tape measure according to the present invention. FIG. 2 is a front view of a second portion of the tape measure of FIG. 1. FIG. 3 is a front view of a third portion of the tape measure of FIG. 1. FIG. 4 is a front view of a fourth portion of the tape measure of FIG. 1.
FIGS. 1-4 illustrate a carpenter's tape measure 10 according to the present invention. Tape 10 features indicia 12A-N on a first indicator strip 14, indicia 16A-N on a second indicator strip 18, indicia 20A-N on a centering strip 22 and stud centering marks 30. Indicia 12A-N, 16A-N, 20A-N may be numerals or other symbols useful for indicating units of distance. Indicia 12A-N, 16A-N, and 20A-N are evenly spaced on a linear scale so that measurements of units of distance may be taken with reference thereto. Indicia 12A-N on strip 14 alternate between the upright and upside-down positions. In other words, if 12A is upside-down, 12B is upright and so on. Indicia 16A-N likewise alternate between the upright and upside-down positions, although the pattern complements that of inidicia 12A-N. Thus, if 12A is upside-down, 16A is upright, and so on for the extent of tape 10. In addition, indicia that are in the same orientation, i. e., 16A, 12B, 16C, 12D, etc. (the nominally upright indicia), may be sized differently that the complementary set of indicia. By this, the user more easily may distinguish one set of indicia from another. (Of course, as the position of tape is changed, e. g., if the tape is rotated one-hundred and eighty degrees, first one and then the other set of indicia will be "upright.") Because tape 10 is marked in the manner described, a user easily may take multiple measurements in multiple directions without changing position or reading symbols that are upside-down. For example, a carpenter standing along one side of a board may wish to take measurements of the board in both the left and right directions. With a conventional tape measure, the carpenter would either have to move about in order to take the measurements, or take at least some of the measurements by reading the tape measure in an upside-down position. Using tape 10, however, the carpenter may take measurement of the board to the right and left of his position and read from the set of indicia which is upright. To increase further the ease of reading, each indicia 12A-N, 16A-N may bear an underline 17 which indicates to the user the bottom of the symbol, thereby facilitating the identification by the user of the indicia that are upright in the given position. Fractional divisions of units of length defined by indicia 12A-N and 16A-N are denoted by hatch marks 40, 41 and 42. For instance, if the scale of tape 10 is in inches, hatch marks 40 represent one-quarter inch divisions, hatch marks 41 represent one-eight inch divisions and hatch marks 42 represent one-sixteenth inch divisions. To improve ease of reading, the length of each hatch mark may be varied according to the fraction it represents. Thus, hatch marks 40 may be longer than hatch marks 41. Likewise, hatch marks 42 may be dots rather than lines to further distinguish that fraction from the others. Furthermore, each hatch mark may extend to the very edge of the tape measure. Indicia 20A-N are distributed linearly along centering strip 22. The quantitative value of indicia 20A-N is some fractional value of indicia 12A-N, 16A-N. For example, it is often necessary, when measuring construction materials, to determine the center of the material being measured. Thus, if indicia 20A-N are calibrated to indicate exactly one-half of the quantitative value of indicia 12A-N, 16A-N to which indicia 20A-N are proximate, the user easily can identify the mid-point of the material. The user reads indicia 12A-N, 16A-N and locates the indicium 12x, 16x representing the overall length of the object. The user may then refer to the proximate indicia 20x, which will show one half of the value indicated by the indicium 12x, 16x. Other fractions may also be used. As illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, particular indicia may be highlighted with stud centering marks 30. Marks 30 allow a user easily and rapidly to mark the proper spacing for studs or other regularly occurring structures. In the illustrative embodiment, the sixteen and twenty-four inch marks are bracketed with marks 30, as these distances are the most common spacings for studs. Other intervals may be used as appropriate. Marks 30 may be provided over the entire length of tape 10. For instance, marks 30 for measuring sixteen inch centers may be placed at indicia 12A-N, 16A-N indicating inches sixteen, thirty-two, forty-eight and so on. Marks 30 for measuring twenty-four inch centers may be placed at indicia 12A-N, 16A-N indicating inches twenty-four, forty-eight and so on. Marks 30 for measuring different intervals may be visually distinct. For instance, marks 30 for sixteen inch centers may be squared off, whereas marks for twenty-four inch centers may be rounded. In this manner, the different stud centering intervals are easily distinguished. Where such marks coincide, such as at the forty-eight inch mark (not shown), marks 30 for the differing intervals may overlap, the differences between each marking allowing both to be readily identified. Marks 30 may be bracketed around the desired indicia so that the width of the typical structure can be accounted for. Thus, as illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, marks 30 span a distance of one and one-half inches, the width of a standard "two by four" stud, and are centered on the desired point. In this manner, the user can mark the desired center-point of the stud, as well as its boundaries, eliminating the chance of an erroneous reading of markings made on the structure. Other features may also be included to increase the ease of use of tape 10, while reducing the risk of erroneous measurements. For instance, tape 10 may employ a contrasting color scheme to improve ease of reading. Indicia 12A-N, 16A-N, 20A-N may be numbered out in single unit, e. g., inches, as illustrated in FIG. 4. Thus, large readings can be made in inches alone rather than as a combination of inches and feet. Each of the features described herein may be used alone or in combination. The effect of these features, either alone or in combination, is to ease the task of taking the numerous measurements associated with construction by providing readily distinguishable visual cues to the user. Although the foregoing is provided for purposes of illustrating, explaining and describing embodiments of the present invention, modifications and adaptations to these embodiments will be apparent to those skilled in the art and may be made without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention.

One from the random convergence device generator. a 16-foot tape measure with a voice recorder and one of those ineffectual LED lights, so "you'll be able to see exactly what you're measuring." I can record only 20 seconds of audio, and costs $20. Why stop there? What would it have cost to add, say, an FM radio? Or a rape alarm? Product Page [X-tremegeek via Gizmodiva]
Actually, oddly enough these features make sense to me, even if they may not be super-practically useful. My guess is that the *idea* is that you are using this tape-measure, working alone. Instead of writing down how much you just measured to refer to it later, you record those measurements as audio on the device itself. Then later, when you go 'now how long was that piece of timber again?', you just hit playback on the tape measure.
Well, for one thing, it's plastic and therefore vulnerable. For another, it has electrical parts & therefore it's vulnerable. I have 3 tape measures here in my desk because that's the minimum number required for me to have one at hand while doing a project because 1 will be out of sight, covered up and another will in my pocket where I didn't look. All of my tape measures are scarred and dented from being dropped, buried under wrenches, stepped on and occasionally thrown just as far as I can. If it's not as durable as a brick I just can't use it and this little plastic electrical thing looks like it would come apart at its ultrasonic welds the first time a 2 X 4 fell on it.
I concur with Ross. I'm not even a contractor (my dad is) and I'd still have one of these crying for mercy in a day. Maybe it's designed for those home improvement types. You know, the home improvement types who would actually find it a bother to take a pencil and scratch their measurement down on the piece of wood they're measuring.
Tape measures are special types of rulers that can be made of metal, cloth, or plastic. All tape measures included linear-measure markings, with many including both imperial and metric units. Imperial measurements are those commonly used in the United States, including feet, pounds, and seconds. Metric units, on the other hand, are those used in the metric system, commonly used by many countries outside of the United States. Tape measures are commonly used by surveyors in order to determine hectometers. Surveyors are individuals who work to accurately determine the position of points on land and the angles and distances between these points. Often, surveyors are called upon to help create land maps and to establish land ownership boundaries. The flexibility of tape measures makes them an easy to use measuring device for surveyors, because they can follow along curves and corners. They can also be rolled up neatly and conveniently stored in a toolbox or a pocket. Tailors also use tape measures. Typically, these tape measures are made of cloth and are used to take measurements of the person for whom the clothing is being made. As such, these tape measures are used to measure around a person’s waist, chest, and hips. They are also used to measure the length of a person’s arms and legs in order to ensure the best possible clothing fit. Carpenters and construction workers also use tape measures. The tape measures used in this capacity are generally stiff, yet somewhat flexible, and are made of a metallic ribbon that is slightly curved on its sides. These tape measures are capable of remaining stiff and straight when properly extended. At the same time, they can retract and coil up when not in use. These tape measures have a tang at the end which allows them to be hooked onto the object being measured as the user walks to the other end of the object. The first modern day tape measure was patented on 14 July 1868 by Alvin J. Fellows. According to Fellows, his design was simply an improvement on the design already being used for the creation of tape measures.
Measuring tapes come in different styles. For measuring rooms, or large areas, the heavy duty style, in a case that pulls open and snaps shut is often used. Measuring tapes also come in soft material, used for the dress maker, or to measure a hem and everything in between. Understanding what measurement it shows, is important, in any project.
Understand what a 1/16th is. A 1/16 of an inch, is usually the smallest measurement on a tape measure. The distance between every line on the tape measure is 1/16 of an inch.
Hold the front of the tape at the point you wish to start the measurement from, and extend it to the point where you want to stop.
Note. Most measuring tapes have the same unit of measure on the top and bottom of the tape. This guide assumes that this is the case.
With contractor measuring tapes, used for measuring large areas, you often cannot get a measurement using just the tape, as the body or case of the measuring tape gets in the way. That's why these bodies are carefully designed and marked to a certain width. Look on the case body for the width indicator. Many are 3". To measure a room from one corner to the other.
Example. Measure a space on your wall. Place the front of the tape at the start point and extend it until after you reach the stop point. Look at the tape and see the last number before the stop point, for example, 17. After the number 17, count four lines, noticing that you stop on the third longest line. That would make the total measured space 17 and 1/4 of an inch.
This applies only to a tape that measures using standard Imperial (feet and inches) units. Consider using a metric measuring tape, which some say are more logical and easier to use. Also consider that the usage of metric is not commonplace to linear measurements in areas that use Imperial units. and to expect to confuse contractors, home-improvement store employees and other people that may assist you. You may have to use a calculator and list of conversions as building materials commonly do not list both systems of measurement.
This would not work exactly the same for a metric tape measure. Metric tape measures are based on a different system of measurement.

One of the gratifying things about being an editor at POPULAR MECHANICS is that you get to meet and talk with inventors. Inventors are a breed apart, and, generally speaking, they're a pleasure to work with. There's no corporate baloney with them or their products. Simply stated. it's fun. That was the case when Everett Byrom of Atlas Magnetic Tools approached us for some coverage on his company's new product, the Magna Measure. Byrom is a former Hollywood special effects technician who worked on movies such as "The Grinch." He teamed up with Jake Lee, another special effects technician whose credits include animatronics work with Muppets creator Jim Henson. Atlas's gadget is simple. It's an oversize aluminum end clip into which you slide the hook of a tape measure. Embedded in the aluminum clip is a powerful rare-earth magnet. With the Magna Measure in place, a standard tape measure is easily adapted for metal work and fabrication. It's obviously a help for welders and fabricators, but other trades would benefit as well. steel constructors or plumbing and mechanical contractors who work with steel pipe or duct. It's ingeniously simple. Each Magna Measure comes with two storage discs that attach to a tape measure. This allows you to remove the device when it's not needed and store it on the tape measure. Having two storage discs allows the device to be shared between two tape measures, or you can put one storage disc aside in case the tape measure you are using is broken or lost--not an unusual occurrence on a construction site. It's a neat idea, and it reminded me again of why this is such a great place to work. The Magna Measure costs about $7 plus shipping. Contact Atlas Magnetic Tools, P. O. I made this little zippered tape measure pouch to hold my super sharp scissors that I take to work for the Craft-at-Work challenge and though they might be a fun thing for other people to have a go at.
My fabric measures approx. 14 cm x 46 cms and I used a wool blend for the lining - it hides my hand stitching nicely as it has a bit of texture. I also switched zips after this photo. I Didn't really like the pink one. Begin to create your tape measure fabric by setting your machine to zig zag with a reasonably close stitch size. You want this stitch to hold your tapes together. I also made sure to use a good quality thread and an old needle. I switched my machine to slow (down on the foot pedal usually). Then you simply set your tapes next to each other on your light cotton and sew them down while joining them together.
Now just lay your tape measure pieces in place along your zip. Pin them into place. Try and put the pins where you expect to stitch and that way you'll stitch right over the pin holes.
This line of stitching not only attaches yout tape measure sides but also stitches your inner lining away from the zip.
The best way to do this is to warm up the tape measures for a few seconds with the hair dryer - it makes them nice and soft and easy to turn, and it helps when you press out the corners too.
One can never have too many bags or purses OR TAPE MEASURES, I say! (I'm a closet tape measure collector, too!!). Great idea for a purse!!!
Absolutely fantastic - it's going on my list of "Ric-Rac tutorial must-do's". Now I just need a tape measure collection (all of mine are pink).
Great tutorial, but is there such a thing as "A tape measure collection?" I have two, not quite enough for this project.
Wonderful tutorial. I just love your tape measures - great collection there. You are amazing, and totally deserve the Domestic Goddess and Tutorial Whiz Crown!
Wow us. what a great tutorial might use ric rac or ribbon as a bit low on tape measures at the moment.
I'm with Lucy Locket, I don't have a collection of tape measures (actually its not often that I need one - I just tend to rebel against them and freestyle on sizes when it comes to my own work - i'll never make a quilter will I! This pouch is great btw. I'm bound to end up using the tape measures that you packaged my quilt in - maybe as a brooch though. Mondax
It's great fun reading your tutorial, now if only I had so many different colored tape measures, I'd do your project in a jiffy!!!Thank you for your tutorial!!!
Thanks for your comment Jodie! I was doubting my humour after I posted that!! I love the tape measure pouch, trouble is I'll have to go a buy some!
Think me crazy but I never new tape measures came in so many gorgeous colors! A great tutorial. Thanks Jodie. CheersLibby
You can make a pouch or you can buy one at Etsy from Miriam, a very crafty Portuguese girl that has been making these tape measure pouches for years.)
I love this! Oh to have so many tape measures to choose from, like you did..I'll have to make one out of old fabric scraps, or something. Thanks for sharing! Julie
Hi, I am Jodie. I craft almost everyday . I am more than a little obsessed with selvedges- you know those little maker marks on the very edge of fabric. I collect Buttons, tape measures, shopping jeeps, sewing mannequins and old aprons. I work in a Primary school library and read lots of books about bottoms and farts and underpants as a result. Cold. (I know those of you who have lived here for awhile are scoffing at me, and I will admit my windbreaker was not appropriate clothing for yesterday’s chilly air, but people, really…) Regardless, the only planting one does in Iowa in December is one’s ass. In a chair. Preferably under a very warm blanket. Because it’s already snowing there and people are already not going to work and sliding in the ditch and piling up their trucks and shutting down highways. Planting in December? This I had to see. “Do you need any help?” I asked. “You would help?” Cameron asked right back at me. “If I can blog about it, yes,” I said. I am prone to negotiations when the situation requires it. A plan, underway The next day, following the Manhattan and a few other cocktails that shall remain in the mists of memory, Cameron asked me if I was serious about the whole helping thing. I was, so we affixed a date. There was a corollary plan. While San Francisco is a city of incredible restaurants, there are a handful of absolute stars that have been on my yet-to-be-tried list. Among those were SPQR and Range, two that I knew are particular faves of the Married With Dinner consortium. We agreed planting, followed by dinner at SPQR, would be an excellent way to spend the afternoon and evening. Cameron suggested I arrive at the closest BART station at 1 p. m. so we could be sure to have enough time to get everything planted. It was, I will admit, at this point that I wondered what I had gotten myself into. As near as I could figure it, that meant he thought we probably had, at bare minimum, four hours worth of planting to do. But hey…I had not yet seen their house, nor their yard. I knew they had trees in the yard, because I had seen pictures of the makrut lime, the bergamot, and other citrus. And trees, to me, mean space. A lot of space. The afternoon in store And so…on Saturday morning, I set off, gloves and a change of clothes in my bag, envisioning that, perhaps, Cameron had not yet put the dirt in the raised beds, or maybe had more raised beds that I did not, indeed know about. It occurred to me, as I walked to BART, that I might be in for a back-breaking afternoon. When I arrived, I followed Cameron out to the back yard, where I peered at the two beds, each approximately 32 feet square, and already filled with dirt. And driplines. Around the edge? The very beautiful, but compared-to-my-imagination-very-small trees. Then he pointed out the stack of seed packets and the bag of onion sets we would be putting in. This is the point at which I became quite certain we were not going to need all afternoon to put in 14 rows of seeds. When he pulled out the Moleskine with a chart mapping out the plan for planting, I began openly laughing. And trust me, this was not the laughter of mockery. (Well, maybe it was a hint of mockery, but in the kindest of ways.) This was the laughter of terror. Because the way I plan and plant gardens? Not at all (planning) and ever-so-haphazardly (planting). It’s one thing to kill one’s own plants. But to kill a fellow gardener’s crop before it even sprouts? That seems, somewhat, unforgivable. But then, as I was standing there feeling highly inadequate, Cameron said, “Do you think I need to get a tape measure?” “Um, no,” I said. “No, I do not.” And, I must say, I said that with great confidence, even while thinking about the time that I planted seeds that like 1/4” depth at something more like a 2” depth, and then wondered why they didn’t come up. We set to work, and I put in leeks (which I’d only planted from starts in the past), beets, two kinds of radishes, and Cameron put in peas, mixed lettuce, and onions. We were done in less than an hour. “Are you going to come back tomorrow?” Cameron asked. “We ought to have something ready to harvest by then.” “Boiling onions,” said Anita, who had come out to survey our progress and tell us sandwiches were almost ready. “We’ll have an excellent crop of boiling onions.” The part that did, indeed, involve sitting around, although not under a blanket All that planning? Paid off, as far as Im concerned. It just meant we had more time to tell each other stories, and to relax on the upper deck eating the incredible Reubens Anita made us, and to sit around in the living room with their dog Angus napping across the way and their dog Bella licking the air around my face, and to drink the beers we barely earned for our effort. And then, it was off to SPQR, where Anita and Cameron introduced me to a restaurant to which I plan to return often, and not just because of the sandwich that uses five to six different forms of pork to make itself delicious. So maybe we didn’t spend more than an hour on the planting of the garden, but really, what’s more important is cultivating new friendships. At one point during dinner, I talked about how I’d applied for jobs in the South Bay when I was trying to move out here, and said I’d dodged a hell of a bullet by landing a job and an apartment in Oakland. “Can you imagine?” I said. “If I’d moved to Mountain View, I wouldn’t have known ANYbody.” “Well,” said Anita. “You would have known somebody. Different somebodies, perhaps, but somebodies nonetheless.” But here’s the thing about my gardens. I dont really plan them out, but I am always thrilled with what I harvest. And so it is with all my Bay Area friends. They’re exactly the kind of somebodies I want to know. That’s why I can already feel myself growing roots, happily.

ALTA FLORESTA, Brazil. A convoy of black sport utility vehicles pulled into a lumberyard unannounced here one recent morning. Out popped more than a half-dozen members of Brazils security and police forces, packing sidearms and rifles. But the weapon that the lumber foreman feared most was carried by officials from Brazils national environmental agency. bright yellow tape measures. "Thirty-eight! Seventy!" the agents shouted from the logs clustered in the thick mud as they quickly went to work. One agent, Mario Rubbo, jotted down the volume of each log for comparison with what the lumberyard had declared to state authorities. Discrepancies could mean fines or criminal charges. This is Operation Arc of Fire, the Brazilian governments tough campaign to deter illegal destruction of the Amazon forest. It is intended to send a message that the government is serious about protecting the worlds largest remaining rain forest, but so far it has stirred controversy for its militaristic approach to saving trees, and the initial results have been less than promising. The operation began in February after new satellite data showed that deforestation had spiked in the second half of 2007 after three consecutive years of decline. The new data rattled the government of President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, which has been trying to play a bigger role in discussions about global climate change amid mounting scientific evidence that some 20 percent of annual global greenhouse emissions come from the clearing of tropical forests, including the burning, decay and decomposition of the land.
The government says it will now spend about $118 million over at least the next year to crack down on illegal loggers. It has mobilized some 600 officials on the ground in three states - Mato Grosso, Para and Rondonia - as well as 175 cars and trucks and four airplanes. In the operations first few days, the police discovered hidden troves of wood, sometimes buried underground and invisible from the air. Already, the authorities have issued $18.4 million in fines, made 19 arrests and seized more than 39,100 cubic meters, or 51,140 cubic yards, of wood, which has been transferred to local governments, said Kezia Macedo, an analyst with the federal environmental agency, known as Ibama, in Braslia. But the challenges are daunting. The Amazon is vast, with some 3.4 million square kilometers still forested, or 1.3 million square miles. The contingent of 48 police officers and two dozen agents involved in Arc of Fire here seems minuscule for the territory in northern Mato Grosso. That is one reason the agents are mostly concentrating on bottlenecks where the wood must be transported, catching loggers coming in and out of Alta Floresta, a city of about 50,000 people in northern Mato Grosso. The federal government has tried such police operations before, notably in early 2005. But those efforts were only sporadic. This time government officials say they plan to establish permanent operations in the region to control the exit of wood from the forest, and keep pressure on the loggers. Tensions were high in the first few days of the program in Tailandia, a city in Para State, where loggers joined local officials to protest and harass agents involved in the operations. Here in Mato Grosso, the giant agricultural state where the most deforestation has occurred, Ibama agents are confronting a powerful governor, Blairo Maggi, the worlds largest soybean producer, known in Brazil as the "King of Soy." While Maggi has softened his public stance on deforestation over the past few years, he remains a forceful advocate for agricultural expansion. He has reportedly sought meetings with da Silva in recent days to discuss Arc of Fire. Ibama agents privately suggest that Maggi exerts a strong influence over Mato Grossos state environmental agency. The state officials have successfully challenged Ibamas method of measuring wood volumes and criticized the deforestation-detection system of Brazils National Institute for Space Research. Both the federal and state environmental agencies have struggled with accusations of corruption. In 2005, Maggi fired his environmental secretary after he was charged with bribery, although the charges were never proved. In Alta Floresta, the Ibama agents are led by Rodrigo Almeida, a former travel agent who has been with Ibama for 14 years. They try to maintain a low profile and declined to have their faces photographed for fear of being singled out for intimidation. "For sure, there are a lot of interests involved in these operations," said Glauco Saraiva, the chief with the federal police who is in charge of Arc of Fire here.

The invention relates to a material measure for a distance measuring system. Such material measures are known from German Patent Disclosure DE 199 22 363, which is hereby incorporated in full as a reference. It shows a material measure which has a base body 3, to which a first tape measure 29 with perforations 37 is secured. The base body 3 is formed by the guide rail of a linear anti-friction guideway. The center line, not shown, of the tape measure is therefore a straight line. On the guide carriage 19 of this linear anti-friction guideway, there is a sensor head 31, with which the tape measure can be scanned inductively to ascertain distance information. As perforations, rectangles are provided, which extend transversely to the center line of the tape measure and are located periodically. The tape measure is of steel and has a thickness of approximately 0.3 mm. The width of the rectangle and the spacing in the longitudinal direction is 0.5 mm each, so that the inductive sensor head outputs sine and cosine signals with a period of 1 mm. The period of the tape measure is set exactly by means of a suitable tensing or stretching thereof. The stretched tape measure is secured to the base body by means of spot welds, and it is received in an indentation which is closed with a covering tape 15. The perforations in the tape measure are made by means of etching. To that end, a flat, unperforated steel band is coated with photoresist and exposed to light with high precision using the desired perforation pattern. The photoresist is then developed and at the places where the perforations are provided it is removed, while it still covers the steel band at the other places. This process is performed on both sides of the tape measure. By dipping the pretreated band into an etching fluid, the perforations are chemically dissolved out of the band. The problem here is that the boundary faces of the perforations, which extend in the thickness direction of the tape measure, have an irregular shape. These irregularities depend on both the process conditions in etching, such as the etching time, and on the geometry of the tape measure as well as its period and thickness. In inductive scanning of the tape measure, these irregularities lessen the precision of the entire distance measuring system. This leads to conflicting goals, since the thickness of the tape measure should be as great as possible on the one hand, so that as strong a sensor signal as possible can be generated, and as small as possible on the other, so that the least possible irregularity of the perforations will be obtained. Similarly conflicting goals exist in terms of the period of the tape measure. If the period is short, the sensor can generate a more-precise measurement signal, while the irregularity of the perforations of the tape measure increases.
It is the object of the invention to create a material measure whose tape measure is as precise as possible and at the same time is as thick as possible. This object is attained by providing that at least one further tape measure, substantially identical to the first tape measure, is provided, which is located parallel to the first tape measure, and the perforations of all the tape measures are located congruently one above the other. The two tape measures thus act like a single tape measure. This effective tape measure is as thick as all the tape measures put together, but at the same time is as precise as a single tape measure. The material measure of the invention can be produced by gluing the tape measures onto one another in the tensionless state. However, that is difficult, since the tape measures, because of their slight thickness of preferably 0.1 mm, are very flexible, and the period of two different tape measures is never exactly the same. It is therefore proposed that the parallel tape measures are folded from a one-piece rough tape measure. For that purpose, the one-piece rough tape measure has a plurality of fold-symmetrical rows of perforations, that are separated from one another by fold lines. By means of the fold line, which may for instance be embodied as a narrow, straight groove, the site of the fold is precisely predetermined. The fold-symmetrical perforations, which are located side by side on the rough tape measure, will therefore always be located precisely one above the other, even if the period of the rough tape measure fluctuates somewhat in the longitudinal direction. The fold line may be embodied such that upon folding, the rough tape measure breaks apart into a plurality of separate tape measures. However, it is also conceivable to embody the fold line such that it acts like a film hinge. A tape measure folded in this way can then be further processed like a solid tape measure. What is decisive in each case, however, is that the individual tape measures are not bent in the region of the fold line upon being folded. Such deformations would adversely affect the parallelism of the individual tape measures and thus impair the precision of the overall measuring device. In a further embodiment, the tape measures can each be tensed in such a way that the perforations are congruent. A material measure of this kind can be produced as follows. The first tape measure is secured under tension on the base body, as is known from DE 199 22 363, in such a way that it has the desired period. To that end, it is secured to one end of the base body by means of spot welding. Next, the tape measure is stretched, until it has the desired period. To that end, in the tensionless state the tape measure period must be somewhat shorter than the target period. The tensed tape measure is then likewise spot-welded to the diametrically opposed end of the base body. The second tape measure is now secured, again to one end of the material measure, by means of spot welding. It is advantageous here if the spot weld of the first tape measure is somewhat closer to the end of the base body than the spot weld of the second tape measure. The second spot weld will then fix the two tape measures jointly on the base body, since they rest on one another. Before that, however, the recesses of the two tape measures must be aligned with one another. This is advantageously done with the aid of a microscope, since a very high alignment precision is the goal. As a reference point for the alignment, one recess on each of the two tape measures is used, which is located as close as possible to the second spot weld, and specifically on the side of the spot weld that is tensed in the finished state of the material measure. Following that, the second tape measure is tensed, until all the perforations are precisely congruent. In this method step as well, a microscope will surely also be used, in order to align two recesses of the two tape measures, which are located on the diametrically opposed, not yet secured end of the second tape measure, with one another. Because of the high precision of the etched tape measures, all the other perforations in the middle region of the material measures are then exactly aligned as well. Finally, the second end of the second tape measure is also secured with a spot weld. This weld will again be made at a place where both tape measures can be welded jointly to the base body. It is assured in this way that even the tiniest deformations that are made in the tape measures by the spot welds will have the same effect in both tape measures, so that the perforations continue to be exactly congruent. Although this arrangement of the spot welds relative to one another promises advantages, nevertheless any other arrangement may be provided instead, as long as it enables secure fastening of the tape measures. Depending on the application, still other material measures can be mounted on the base body in this manner. The optimal number can be determined by means of a computer simulation or by trial and error. In material measures for inductive measuring systems, it is advantageous if an electrical contact exists between the tape measures resting on one another, so that the eddy currents that occur in the scanning can propagate unhindered throughout the entire stack of tape measures. This goal can be most simply achieved by providing that cleaned, bright steel tape measures are placed directly on one another and then tensed. At this point, it should also be noted that the method for cutting a shorter material measure apart from a long material measure in accordance with claim 11 and following claims in DE 199 22 383 A1 can also be performed in a material measure of the invention. However, in a material measure of the invention, the plurality of tape measures are spot-welded jointly. It should also be noted that the invention does not relate only to tape measures with a straight center line. Instead, it can also be imagined that the tape measure be wound onto a cylinder, so that angle information can be obtained by way of the distance measurement in the circumferential direction. However, a circularly curved tape measure can also be applied to a flat surface, to attain this same function. The perforations of the tape measures can be either periodic or aperiodic. Aperiodic perforations are used for instance in distance measuring systems that function in absolute fashion that use a random sequence of numbers, as described in German Patent Disclosure DE 39 10 873 A1. The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the present invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a material measure according to the invention. FIG. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the material measure of FIG. 1 taken along the line A-A. and FIG. 3 is a sectional view of a one-piece rough tape measure for use in a material measure according to the invention.
In FIG. 1, a material measure of the invention is identified overall by reference numeral 10 . It comprises a base body 12, on the outside of which an indentation 16, shown in FIG. 2, is made. The indentation is closed by a covering tape 18, which is joined to the base body by means of two laser-welded seams 32 . In FIG. 1, for the sake of simplicity, the covering tape has not been shown. The base body 12 is a straight, elongated profiled body, for instance the guide rail of a linear anti-friction guideway. Located beneath the covering tape is a first tape measure 20, a second tape measure 22, and a third tape measure 24, each with a straight center line 14 . The tape measures are all embodied identically, except in length, and comprise sheet spring steel that is 0.1 mm thick. By means of an etching process, perforations 34 have been made in the tape measures, in the form of rectangular recesses that extend transversely to the longitudinal direction of the tape measure. The recesses are each 0.5 mm wide and are distributed periodically along the center line 14 of the tape measure. in the tensionless state, the minimal period is less than 1 mm. The three tape measures 20, 22, 24 rest directly on one another, so that eddy currents that occur upon an inductive distance measurement can propagate unhindered through the stack of tape measures. The perforations 34 of the tape measures 20, 22, 24 stacked one above the other are located precisely congruently one above the other. The first tape measure 20 is secured to the base body 12 under tension by four first spot weld connections 26 in such a way that the period of the perforations is exactly 1 mm. The second tape measure 22 has first been secured to the base body by two second spot weld connections 28 . Before that, on the basis of a first alignment perforation 36, which is located directly next to the second spot weld connection 28, it was aligned relative to the first tape measure 20, with the aid of a microscope. The second spot weld connection 28 penetrates both tape measures 20, 22, so that they are secured jointly to the base body. Before the two second spot weld connections 30 are applied, the second tape measure 22 was tensed, such that now the second alignment perforations 38 of the two tape measures are also located exactly one above the other. The second alignment perforations 38 are located directly next to the third spot weld connections 30, just like the first alignment perforations 36 in the tensed region of the tape measures. Showing the third tape measure 24 has been dispensed with in FIG. 1. The installation of this tape measure proceeds analogously to the second tape measure 22, and the corresponding additional spot weld connections are again offset somewhat from the center of the material measure, because it is disadvantageous to place a plurality of welded points at the same location. In FIG. 3, a one-piece rough tape measure 40 is shown, from which the parallel tape measures 20, 22, 24 can be folded. For that purpose, the rough tape measure 40 has two fold lines 42, which are embodied as straight grooves 44 . The grooves 44 are placed on diametrically opposite sides of the rough tape measure 40, so that the latter can be folded up in accordion fashion, specifically in the direction of the arrows 46 indicating folding. The rough tape measure 40 of spring steel will typically break apart, so that the individual tape measures can be installed as described above. The grooves 44 are produced together with the perforations 40 in an etching process, so that the perforations 40 are located exactly fold-symmetrically to the fold lines. So that a groove will be created in the etching, the rough tape measure 40 must be covered entirely with photoresist on one side, while on the other side an opening in the photoresist is provided, whose width corresponds to the groove width. The depth of the groove can be adjusted by way of the duration of etching. The U-shaped cross section of the groove is essentially predetermined by the etching process. It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of constructions differing from the types described above. While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a material measure with parallel tape measures, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention. Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention. What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
The third article in the basics series discusses reading a tape measure and includes a drawing showing the breakdown of the fractions of one inch. The importance of accuracy is discussed. Here are the first 3 of the 7 paragraphs of this article.
One of the most useful tools in a tradesman's toolbox is the common tape measure. Let's see how to read a tape measure. The tape measure can be marked with English measurements, metric measurements or both shared on the same tape. Most tape measures have common elements to be able to use them easily. Most tape measures have both inches and foot marks. Notice that the 16", 32", 48", 64", etc. are marked differently than the other inch markers. Some tape measures have small black diamonds with a box around the number, others have these numbers highlighted in red. These numbers refer to the 16" centers for laying out studs and joists. Most carpenters have the 16" centers memorized up to 8', but a little help on the tape is well received when you get to 128". When reading a tape measure a little math is involved. We know that 1/2 is the same as 4/8, 8/16, 16/32, etc. We could refer to the 1/2" mark as the 16/32" mark but we usually use the simplest numbers possible. Since we know that 16/32 is 1/2, when looking for 15/32", for example, it is the first 32nd before the 1/2" mark.

THE FULL DATA OF THIS ARTICLE (AND EVERY OTHER ARTICLE AND PLAN ON THE SITE) IS AVAILABLE IF YOU REGISTER AS A MEMBER TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE ENTIRE SITE, WHICH REALLY IS NOT EXPENSIVE. Actually, in the field a carpenter refers to a 32nd as plus or minus a major fraction. For instance, 13/32 is 1/32 less than 14/32 or 7/16, so we say "7/16 minus" and 11/32 is 1/32 more than 10/32 or 5/16, so we say "5/16 plus". This is a fast way of reading the tape measure on the job when taking a measurement of something to cut it to fit. What you should do is memorize the common fractions down to sixteenths. Here they are. 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16 and the inch mark. Notice the size of the graduations change with the fraction. 1/2 is the largest, then 1/4 and 3/4, then the eighths, sixteenths and the smallest are the thirty-seconds. These divisions are the most common, but you can get a measure in tenths and hundredths. I have a framing square that divides an inch into one hundredths. We use thirty-seconds in the stair calculator, and other instances like that, just for accuracy because when you're cutting 16 risers, if you are 1/16th inch out on each one, you are out a whole inch at the end. Even being 1/32" out gives an error of 1/2"!

Distance (aka Acoustic Tape Measure) determines the physical distance between two XOs by measuring how long it takes sound pulses to travel between them.
Normally, distance measurements that use audio transit time work by first synchronizing the clocks on the two computers. The receiver starts recording, and notes the wall-clock time at which recording started. The sender then plays some sound, noting the wall-clock time at which playback was initiated. The distance is then determined by the amount of time between the start of playback and the receiver hearing the pulse. The speed of sound is over 300 meters per second, so 1 cm accuracy requires synchronization to within about 30 microseconds. This is very difficult to achieve, even with advanced tools like NTP, over an unreliable wireless network. Moreover, determining at what time recording or playback started is very difficult. The audio function calls typically take several millisecond to return, and recording or playback could have started at any point during that interval. Accurate timing is especially difficult on a multitasking, non-realtime operating system like the XO's Linux kernel, and even more so due when writing in a high-level language (Python) on an overtaxed, underpowered processor. On the XO, this would a be a futile approach. Acoustic Tape Measure sidesteps the synchronization issue entirely. Instead, it uses the fact that the XO's microphone can hear the output of the XO's speaker. Therefore, the algorithm works by turning on both XO's microphones, and then having each XO play a distinctive sound. Each XO will hear its own sound almost immediately, but there will be a delay before it hears the other XO's sound, due to the propagation delay. The XO that plays a sound first will hear its sound immediately, but it will hear the second XO's sound delayed by the propagation. The XO that plays second will hear the first XO's sound delayed, but hear its own sound immediately. Therefore, the first XO will measure a longer distance between the two sounds, and the second XO will measure a shorter distance. The difference between their measurements is twice the propagation delay. In this way, Acoustic Tape Measure computes the distance between two laptops by taking the difference between two measurements of the same interval.
In testing, accuracy was 1 cm or better at 2 m. At a distance of 10 meters, measured distance typically fluctuates no more than 1 cm, with sporadic errors up to 4 cm. However, there is likely a systematic error of a few cm, depending on temperature. The measurements seem to be extremely accurate, under controlled conditions. In fact, accuracy seems to be limited by variation in the speed of sound with air temperature. The variation is approximately 0.2% per degree C. Code currently assumes an air temperature of 25 C, which means ± 3% over the whole range of reasonable temperatures. At short distances, accuracy is limited by the 48 KHz sample frequency, corresponding to a distance of ~7.5 mm between samples. An estimate of temperature would be useful to improve accuracy. Even an almanac, giving average temperatures by location and time of year, would be helpful. Alternatively, it is in principle possible to use this system to measure the air temperature due to its effect on the speed of sound. However, to achieve accuracy of 1 degree C, it would be necessary to separate the laptops by a fixed distance of at least 10 meters, known to 1 cm accuracy. This is extremely difficult, and unlikely. The test signal uses the entire audio spectrum to maximize accuracy. Specifically, the test sound is a Maximum Length Sequence. The system only seems likely to work well when the laptops are facing each other and have uninterrupted line of sight. However, early performance testing suggests that it is more tolerant to these disturbances than initially estimated. The measurements are unlikely to work well if the distance is changing during measurement. Each measurement cycle requires about 8 seconds. Stability is not perfect. Typically the program runs for a few hundred measurements before hitting a networking bug. This corresponds to about 15 minutes of continuous measurement. Acoustic Tape Measure originally used Gstreamer for audio playback and recording. However, this proved to create threading bugs when combined with GTK and Telepathy, as all three toolkits share the same GLib mainloop. Therefore, the playback and recording were transitioned to use the ALSA aplay and arecord tools. The code incorporates a delay to compensate for corruption at the beginning of a microphone recording, bug #3813.
The Boston Museum of Science has an exhibit which measures user distance from a computer along a long mat. The computer then horizontally scrolls a graph with a pattern, along with your current distance. Idea is you have to scurry back and forth to try and match your position to the pattern. Vaguely Digital Dance Revolution-like. I'm not really sure the concept works, but it could be easy to try, and with music added, and kids able to draw their own patterns, it might be interesting. The algorithms would have to be greatly accelerated before something like this would be possible. Children would have to move with one laptop in hand, pointed at the stationary laptop. Also, the measurements are unlikely to work well if the distance is changing during measurement. One possibility would be for the computer to say "go N meters away" and then have a competition to see how many tries it takes to get within, say, 5%. This could be a good distance-sense training exercise. Activity Summary
The tape measure has evolved into a much modern process of getting measurements. It developed from the ribbon type to the most modern digital and laser technology capable of measuring in the most accurate method. To learn more about tape measures, read below.
The tape measure has evolved into a much modern process of getting measurements. It developed from the ribbon type to the most modern digital and laser technology capable of measuring in the most accurate method. Tape measures are similar to rulers but, the difference is that it can be folded or rolled. They are commonly used for dressmaking and tailoring. They are made up of ribbon, cloth, plastic, or metal. Tape measures consist of linear measure marking in metric and imperial units. Carpenters or construction workers also make use of tape measures made up of thin metallic ribbon that remains straight. The metallic ribbon retracts into a small convenient storage. Surveyors also utilize tape measures with a hectometer as its measuring unit. A unique feature prevalent to most tape measures is a small diamond which is embedded every 19.2 inches. It is called black truss marking. Measuring tapes are ideal measuring tools because of its flexibility which can be used to measure even tight corners and curves. It can also be carried in a pocket because of its small size. This measuring tool comes in different types.Body Measuring TapeThis type of measuring tape can be used to measure circumference of the head, waist, legs and arms of the body. One of the models of this type is the Quick Medical QM2000 Measure Mate Body. It features accurate and quick measurements. Another good feature of this tool is that it can measure up to 60 inches and has automatic retracting system. In addition, measurement readings are shown on both sides of the tape. For a more accurate measurement, a 0.1 cm increment is used with this tool. Measuring with the Measure Mate is simple. Just wrap the retracting tape around the area which you want to measure and then put the end into position. Afterwards, just push on the button and it automatically locks into position. Adhesive Measuring TapeThis type of tape measure comes with an adhesive that allows it to be removed and positioned on almost any surface. The tape can be written with marking pens or pencil. It is 1 inch wide and 100 inches long and is colored white with black numeral markings. This is mostly used by police investigators or Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO). It is ideal in measuring blood splatter on any surface, bullet holes, or any pieces of evidence for crime scenes. Magnetic Measuring TapeThe magnetic measuring tape is ideal for measuring metal surfaces. It is made up of vinyl material with a UV resistant red and blue ink. It is one meter long and uses standard and metric measurement system. Laser Measuring TapeThis type of measuring device is one of the latest advancements in measuring technology. This device can be manipulated to accurately measure length, width, distance, area, and volume. Basically, it is used by interior designers, architects, and craftsmen. The great feature of this device is that it is able to measure hard to reach objects such as buildings and billboards if it is 300 feet in distance. The TLM100 is one of the models of this kind of measuring tool. With its point and shoot technology, it can measure quickly and precisely without having a need for an assistant. Plus, it lessens the burden of having to calculate a lot of measurements. Some of the latest models include LCD display and Bluetooth technology for fast and easy data transfer. Digital Measuring TapeIt features an LCD that displays the measurement made. Measurements can be made in inches, feet, and even fraction measurements. The measuring device automatically switches on when the tape is extended. It will turn off when the tape is retracted into its case. The measuring tape operates with the use of two LR44 batteries. Most of the modern spring tape measures are design based on the patent by Alvin J. Fellows on July 14, 1868. The spring tape measure has existed ever since Fellows patent. It was not widely used during that time. But in 1940, it slowly emerged and supplemented in the form of the folding ruler. Having a proper tool for measuring jobs requiring the most exact measurement is important. The slightest inaccuracy in measurements can cause a big difference and may lead to waste of time and material. This is especially true in woodworking, tailoring, and architecture. To achieve the best results, accuracy is necessary. For more information on Tape Measures please visit our website here for more articles from ZingArticles. com
One of the most useful household tools you can have is a good tape measure. A tape measure is used just as much as a hammer or screwdriver and probably more so today with many homeowners taking on DIY (do it yourself) projects that require precision measurements. The old fashioned retractable tape measures from Stanley are still found in most households across America and are great for measuring short distances inside or outside your house. Woodworking or construction related jobs pretty much require that you own a quality tape measure to get exact dimensions and measurements. The smallest tape measures usually are 12' and the longest are over 25' for outdoor jobs and housebuilding. With technology tape measures have evolved and now you can find laser tape measures and digital tape measures which really make the retractable ones seem "old". The digital tape measures give you exact readouts meaning you no longer have to know how to read a tape measure by looking at the 1/16" markers.
Laser tape measures have really revolutionized the industries of landscaping, real estate appraisers, and construction/remodeling. Just point the laser tape measure at the target you wish to measure to and hit the "Read" button to find out the precise distance. Many laser tape measures have an easy to read LCD screen that will display the distance in feet and inches or in metric dimensions. They are 99.5% accurate and great for measuring longer distances which used to require 2 or 3 measurements with the older 16' retractable tape measures. Everyone should own a top rated tape measure in their home, and if you do lots of measuring on the job, consider a higher end laser tape measure to make things easy on yourself. We researched the best tape measures available by reading online reviews on woodworking sites, in construction forums, and in Popular Mechanics magazine. We also ventured to Amazon. com to read up on customer feedback and Epinions. com to see what actual owners have to say about their purchases. We have tried to list most popular brands and models in each category below, taking into consideration consumer ratings and expert reviews. We recommend shopping for the best selling digital tape measures on Amazon. Amazon carries all the leading brands and provides the cheapest prices of any online retailer.
The CST/Stanley 77-910 TLM100 FatMax Tru-Laser ($100) is accurate to 1/4 inch at up to 100 feet and is the best laser measurer on the market. The Stanley laser tape measure is more accurate than any sonic distance meter and it's quick and efficient for household measuring or on the job. The TLM100 is easy to use, just point the laser, press the button and measure. It's a great investment for lots of different occupations. estimators, glass and window contractors, realtors, painters, carpet layers, floor or tile guys, and landscapers. The advantages of having a laser tape measure over a traditional tape measure is that measuring long distances (up to 100 ft) is much faster and safer when trying to measure hard to reach areas or even hazardous zones. The Stanley TLM100 is equipped to measure linear distances, it can do area calculations or volumes, and add or substract distance measurements. The LCD screen is large enough to read measurements without having to squint except in bright light situations. It runs on a 9-volt battery and is a great gift for professionals as well as amateur DIY's. Owners say it's accurate, light, and the rubber protection on the corners are great if it ever gets dropped. The Zircon 58430 DMS50L 50 Ultrasonic Measure with Laser Targeting ($44) is another highly rated measuring device that will measure length, width, area and volume. The Zircon tapeless measuring device works great on room dimensions but rounds all measurements to the nearest inch so getting exact readings isn't going to happen. If you just need to estimate measurements, then the Zircon works well.
Bosch makes some great household appliances and we found their digital tape measure listed on several home improvement sites as a top rated device. The Bosch DLR165K Laser Rangefinder Kit works just like a normal tape measure but is much easier to read since you get a digital readout. You can measure up to 16 feet and get accuracy of 1mm. The LCD panel is large enough to read and the unit can store past measurements with it's built in memory function. Many carpenters like the fact you can measure in meters, millimeters, feet or inches. We had some difficulty locating the Bosch tape measures in stores but Amazon carries it online.
The fact is most of us don't need laser or digital reading tape measures, a good old fashioned one will do just fine for our measuring needs around the house. We were caught between Stanley and Lufkin, but went with the Lufkin PRO Series since they get better reviews and ratings from carpenters and homeowners. The Lufkin 1" x 25' Power Return Tape Measure ($9) with Magnetic End Hook is a top seller along with the Lufkin L516 3/4" x 16' Hi-Viz Orange Power Return Economy Tape Measure ($9). I read an online article from the Woodworkers Gazette on normal tape measures and the writer of the article says the Lufkin 25' had the best ergonomics and blade lock. Lufkin also has some of the best customer service in the industry if you ever need questions answered. Their website is at with complete details, photos and descriptions of all the consumer long steel tapes, industrial long steel tapes, pocket tapes, and fiberglass long tapes. You can see the entire inventory the most popular tape measures on Amazon.
A 25-foot tape measure is a good basic model for your tool kit. When the blade is extended on a 25-footer, it'll stay stiff up to 6 feet. Why does that matter? Because when you're measuring up the side of something, like window casing, it's nice if the blade doesn't collapse down on you. On most tape measures, 1 inch is divided into 1/16-inch increments. All those little lines make for tricky reading at first. Just know that the longest line dividing each inch is the 1/2-inch mark. The next longest lines are the 1/4-inch marks, then the 1/8-inch marks, then the wee, little, need-your-reading-glasses-to-see-them 1/16-inch marks. There are even some tape measures that go way down to 1/32-inch marks. Gimme a break! Anything that needs to be cut with that much precision can beat it. There's an old carpenter's saying about measuring. measure twice, cut once. Take this to heart. If you've bought some fancy, expensive wood trim for a window or door, you don't want to waste a piece. Measure twice, cut once.
The tape measure is one of the most common tools in a homeowner's arsenal. in fact it is so common that most people take it for granted. Many people do not even think of their tape measure as a tool. But, the reality is there are not many projects that do not require accurate measuring and marking. A good tape measure in the hands of someone who knows how to get the most out of it ensures that a project gets off to a good start. If you haven't ever taken the time to learn what your tape measure can do, or if you just want a refresher, check out our tape measure tips and tricks. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.
Most tape measures have lines or inch marks that go across the entire face of the blade. The scale between inch marks is divided into 1/16 increments. There are four different sizes of lines between the inch marks. The longest line represents 1/2, the second longest 1/4, then 1/8 and finally 1/16. The value of any line on the scale can be described in sixteenths of an inch, but it is customary to give the value of the line with its lowest common denominator.
Different manufacturers may use different markings or symbols on the faces of their tapes based on the tape's length and any special purposes for which the tape measure is intended. Given the possibility for variance, most tape measures share the following markings.
Many tape measures also have a small black diamond every 19.2. The diamond is an alternative OC spacing for framing materials. The diamond OC spacing matches 16 OC spacing every 8' so it is compatible with most sheet goods (plywood, paneling, etc.). The benefit of using the diamond spacing is that you save one joist or stud every 8'. Always check with your local building authority before using an alternate spacing.
Most tape measures have a slight curve in the tape to add rigidity to the blade. To get more accurate measurements, roll the tape so the side from which you are reading is in direct contact with the material being measured.
Measuring tools such as angle finders, calipers, chalk line tools, depth/height gauges, dial indicators, fish tapes, light-sound-speed testers, line/open reel tapes, marking tools, measuring tool sets, measuring wheels, micrometers, rulers, tape measures and telescoping gauges are all used to determine a quantity, distance, length, depth and/or angle. Features to look for in a measuring tools include accuracy and durable construction.

A tape measure is disclosed which has a spooled measuring blade mounted via a rotatable connection within a casing (100). The tape measure has impact-protection components. These components may be resilient means (46, 60, 62, 82, 108) arranged between the spooled blade and the case, such as at the rotatable connection. Further impact-protection components are resilient pads (112, 114) which are moulded into impact-vulnerable locations on the outer surface of the case.
Promote your brand with this rugged and comfortable tape measure featuring non-slip, rubber sure grip.
The ideas that small companies come up with are amazing. Take the Builderscale tape measure. One side of its blade has standard inch markings. The other side of the blade has a 1/4-in./ft. architect's scale. That way, you can just lay your tape on the plans and come up with the actual dimensions. The idea is so clever, you wonder why a larger company hasn't developed the product. Otherwise, these tapes are heavy-duty products that would be right at home on any construction site. They have nylon-coated blades and shock-absorbing cases. They are available in three sizes. 16, 25 and 30 ft. (about $15, $20 and $22, respectively). To purchase the tapes, send an e-mail to us .
For more information on Tape Measures please visit our website here for more articles from ZingArticles. com
Tape measures are essentially rulers that are flexible in nature. A tape measure may be constructed of a thin band of metal or made with cloth. These handy measuring tapes normally take up very little space, making them ideal for carrying or storing in small spaces. A tape measure can be used in a number of different professions with ease, making them extremely popular and functional. The tape measure will use the same units of measurement that are common with rulers. Often, the tapes produced today will be double sided. One side of the tape will provide measurements in linear increments, while the other side will provide measurements in metric increments. This means that one simple tape measure can function just about anywhere in the world. Tailors often favor a cloth measuring tape. Because the device is completely flexible, it is ideal for taking measurements that can be used to alter an article of clothing, or to create a new garment altogether. The image of a tailor wearing a tape measure draped over his or her shoulders is a common part of many cultures. Spring style measuring tapes are often favored in construction situations. First developed in the 19th century, this type of tape measure is constructed with a retractable metal band that is housed in a small casing. The casing easily fits into the palm of the hand. A locking device makes it possible to extend the tape to a given point, then lock the tape into place. Because the thin metal band of the tape is flexible, it is possible to measure at an angle as well as a straight line. Both examples of the tape measure are also found in the home. The cloth type is often found in sewing boxes and comes in handy for quick and easy measuring jobs. The spring style of tape measure is often kept in the toolbox and can be handy for small woodworking projects or even determining the position of supports for hanging large works of art on walls. In all its forms, the tape measure is a relatively inexpensive device, and can be purchased at hardware stores and discount retail shops.
A good quality steel rule has many uses, drawing plans, measuring material, checking if glue ups are flat, aligning table saw wings, and any other application where accuracy is necessary. They are available in various lengths, some have the markings starting from the edge, others are indented, these are better for precise measurment since damage to the end will not affect the reading.
Some craftsmen still rely on these rules today, however they have been mostly replaced by the tape measure.
Tape measures come in a variety of widths and lengths, I would not recomend anything less than 3/4 wide for a tape over 6 feet long as they can not be extended out and remain rigid. For small projects in the shop 1/2 wide ones are adequate. Some have highlighted indicators at each foot, others have them at 16 inch intervals which is handier in construction for stud layout, whereas the foot indicators are more useful in the shop. Special tapes are available for lefties as well as ones with digital read-outs.
Use it to mark with. To measure the user hooks the blade to his left and pulls the tape to his right with his right hand, the numbers are right side up. To measure and mark it is necessary to either hold the tape case in the left hand and cross-over with the right to mark, or measure from right to left putting the numbers upside-down.

When I designed this antenna I had one basic idea in mind. It had to be easy to get in and out of the car when hunting for a hidden transmitter. This would be accomplished by the use of steel "tape measure" elements. These elements could fold easily when fitting the antenna into my car and yet still be self supporting. I decided to use three elements to keep the boom from getting too long.
Since I had never seen any plans for an antenna using elements made from 1 inch wide steel "tape measure," I had to do the design myself. To assist in the design I used a shareware computer aided yagi design program written by Paul McMahon VK3DIP. It allowed me to optimize the antenna for the cleanest pattern combined with the best front-to-back ratio.
I used a pair of shears to cut the tape measure elements to length. An old pair of scissors will probably do as well. No matter how you cut the elements be very careful. Those edges are very sharp and will inflict a nasty cut if you are careless. Use some sandpaper to remove the really sharp edges and burrs resulting from cutting the elements to size. I put some vinyl electrical tape on the ends of the elements to protect myself from getting cut. I encourage you to do the same. It will probably be best if you round the corners of the elements once you cut them. Wear safety glasses while cutting the elements. Those bits of tape measure can be hazardous.
The RG58 coax feedline is connected directly to the driven element. No matter what method you use to attach the feedline, make sure you scrape or sand the paint off the tape measure element where the feedline is attached. Most tape measures have a very durable paint finish designed to stand up to heavy use. You do not want the paint to insulate your feedline connection.
If you are careful, It is possible to solder the feedline to the element halves. Care must be taken since the steel tape measure does not solder easily and since the PVC supports are easily melted. You might want to tin the tape measure elements before mounting them to the PVC cross.
If you decide not to solder to the tape measure elements, there are two other methods that have been used to attach the feedline. One method employs ring terminals on the end of the feedline. The ring terminals are then secured under self tapping screws which hold the driven element halves. This method does not allow you to tune the antenna by moving the halves of the driven element. 6-32 bolts and nuts could be used if holes are drilled in the elements near the ends. If the bolt heads are placed nearest the PVC fitting, you could secure ring-terminals with nuts and lock washers. Another possibility is to simply slide the ends of the feedline under the driven element hose clamps and tighten the clamps to hold the ends of the coax. I know this is low-tech, but it works just fine.
Rubber faucet washers have been used by some builders between the tape measure element and the PVC fittings on the director and reflector. These allow for the tape to fit the contour of the PVC fitting and will make the antenna look better. Now you know what to do with those washers left over from the assortment you once purchased. You know the ones I mean, the washers that do not fit the faucets you have in your house. If you are an apartment dweller, ask around, these things are stashed in almost every homeowners basement or garage.
Cut a length of tape measure to 41 3/8 inches. It will be the Reflector element. Cut two lengths of tape measure to 17 3/4 inches. These will be used for the Driven element. Cut one length of tape measure to 35 1/8 inches. It will be used for the Director. Once you have cut the tape measure to length, put vinyl tape on the cut ends to protect yourself from the sharp edges. You will want to scrape or sand off the paint from one end of each of the driven element halves so you can make a good electrical connection to the feedline.
You will need to cut two lengths of PVC pipe to use as the boom. One should be cut to 11 1/2 inches. It is used to form the boom between the Director and the driven element. The other piece of PVC should be cut to 7 inches. It will be used between the Reflector and the Driven element. Just about any saw will cut through the soft PVC pipe. I used a hacksaw. When we mass produced this antenna as a club project, we marked the pipe and used a portable jig saw to cut the lengths in assembly line fashion. It took longer to measure the pipe than to actually make the cuts. Since the pipe is available in ten foot lengths, you can make a few beams from a single 10 foot length. In any case, you might want to cut a few extras lengths for your friends. They will want to duplicate this once they see your completed antenna.
At this time you can pre-assemble the PVC boom, crosses and tee which will support the tape measure elements. I did not use any cement or glue when I assembled mine. The PVC pipe is secured in the fittings with a friction fit.
The hose clamps I used are stainless steel and have a worm-drive screw which is used to tighten them. They are about 1/2 inch wide and are adjustable from 11/16 inch to 1 1/2 inch diameter. Attach the tape measure elements to the PVC fittings as shown in the accompanying drawing. It is normal for the Reflector and Director elements to buckle a bit as it is tightened to the PVC Tee and Cross. You can eliminate this buckle if you use the washers and self tapping screws to attach these elements instead of the hose clamps. I do not think the beam will withstand as rough a treatment as when hose clamps are used.
How does it perform? Once you have completed your beam you probably will be interested to see if it performs as well as the computer predicted. The SWR should be less than 2.1 across the entire two meter band. The front-to-back ratio is predicted to be very good with the antenna exhibiting a very deep notch in its pattern towards the rear. The YagiCad 4.1 program produced these antenna pattern graphs showing the pattern you should expect. If you would like to experiment a bit with this program, the yagi specification file for this tape measure beam is available for download here. Simply download the YAGI-CAD program and put the tape measure beam design file in the same directory. You will then be able to experiment with the design. Note. under Windows95, only the first .yag file will show in the OPEN-FILE menu. You can either move all the other .yag files to a sub-directory or re-start the computer in MS-DOS mode. It works fine there. (I really do not know why this occurs but will blame Microsoft)
How does the tape measure beam "measure up?" WB4SUV and WA6EZV used a storage scope connected to a copy of this antenna constructed by KC8FQY and provided the following picture of the actual antenna pattern. I am very happy to see that the computer prediction of a clean pattern with a really great front-to-back ratio was accurate. What do you think?

Expert. Barbara K. Acchino - 4/25/2008 QuestionQUESTION. Hi, I have a plastic bull-dog shaped tape measure that is about 2" high. I inherited this when my great grandfather died back in the late 1970s, making it at least 20-something years old. The dog is white with black patches that cover each eye and ear. The measure comes out of it's tail and curls right back into the plastic dog after you let it go. Can you tell me anything more about it? ANSWER. Hi Jackie - Without a picture, I am at a real loss of information for you. However, there are at least three books out on tape measures. You might check your local book store or library to see if you can find them. They also appear on eBay frequently and Amazon may offer some of them too. Condition is important to value, especially if the tape still works. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Barb us. FOLLOW-UP us. QUESTION. Barbara, Thank you for your response. Do you know the titles of those books so I can ask for them at the library? Jackie
AnswerHi Jackie. Your best bet is probably "Collecting Figural Tape Measures" by Elzabeth & Douglas Arbittier and Janet & John Morphy. It has a price guide. It was published by Schiffer Books. Another good reference on tapes, but more advertising than figural, is "Collector's Digest Advertising and Figural Tape Measures" by L-W Books Sales. The third eludes me at this time. Good luck with your search. Barb
