A flashlight (also called a torch) is a portable electric spotlight which emits light from a small incandescent lightbulb, or from one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The light source is mounted in a housing which contains a parabolic reflector, a clear protective lens, a power source (typically electric batteries), and an electric power switch. While most flashlights are intended to be held in the hand, there are also helmet-mounted flashlights designed for miners and campers. Some types of flashlights can be powered by hand-cranked dynamos, electromagnetic induction or recharged by solar power. The name flashlight is used mainly in the United States and Canada. In other English-speaking countries, the more common term is torch or electric torch.

In 1898, Joshua Lionel Cowen invented a decorative lighting fixture for potted plants which consisted of a metal tube housing a light bulb and a dry cell battery. It failed commercially, and so Cowen sold his company and patents to Conrad Hubert that same year and turned his attention to building and selling model trains. Hubert renamed Cowen's company the American Electrical Novelty Manufacturing Company and, recognizing the true potential of Cowen's invention, hired David Misell to produce a tubular flashlight for portable use. They donated some models to the New York City police, who responded favorably to it.

These early flashlights ran on zinc-carbon batteries, which were poor at providing sustained currents. they would run down after a while and needed to rest before being usable again.

Since these early flashlights also used energy-inefficient carbon filament bulbs, this happened rather quickly, and consequently they could only be used in brief flashes, hence the popular name flashlight.

A typical flashlight consists of a small incandescent lightbulb (or, in recent models, an LED) with associated parabolic reflector, powered by electric batteries, and with an electric power switch. The components are mounted in a housing that contains the necessary electric circuit and provides ease of handling, a means of access to the batteries for replacement, and a clear covering over the lightbulb for its protection. Although a relatively simple device, its invention did not occur until the late 19th century because it depended upon the earlier invention of the electric battery and incandescent light bulb.

Incandescent flashlights use bulbs that contain a heated-up coil of tungsten wire, which gives off light energy as well as heat. The bulbs are filled with gas (usually argon, perhaps with a trace of a halogen. in higher quality models, xenon is used). A popular example of an incandescent flashlight is the Maglite by Mag Instrument and are capable of producing 40 to 50 lumens [1]. Flashlight hobbyists often modify Maglites by replacing the bulb, reflector, switch, and batteries with more powerful options, producing much more light than a stock Maglite.

Recently, flashlights which use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of conventional lightbulbs have become available. LEDs have existed for decades, mainly as low-power indicator lights. In 1999, Lumileds Corporation of San Jose, CA, introduced the Luxeon LED, a high-power white-light emitter. For the first time this made possible LED flashlights with power and running time better than some incandescent lights. The first Luxeon LED flashlight was the Arc LS in 2001. LEDs can be significantly more efficient at lower power levels and so use less battery energy than ordinary lightbulbs. Such flashlights have longer battery lifetimes, in some cases hundreds of hours, although the LED efficiency advantage diminishes at higher power levels. LEDs also survive sharp blows that often break conventional lightbulbs. LED flashlights are often electronically regulated to maintain constant light output as the batteries fade. By contrast a non-regulated flashlight becomes progressively dimmer, sometimes spending much of the total running time below 50 percent brightness level. A common misconception about LED-based flashlights is that they generate no heat. While lower-power LED flashlights generate little heat, more powerful LED lights do generate significant amounts of heat – although not as radiant energy, as the semiconductor junction inherently dissipates heat. For this reason higher-powered LED flashlights usually have aluminum bodies and can become quite warm during use. The use of aluminum is largely due to its thermal properties, acting as a heatsink for the high-power LED. Very few high-output LED flashlights use a plastic body due to plastic's being a thermal insulator rather than a conductor.

Another less common type of flashlight uses a High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamp as the light source. HID lamps work by discharging an electric current between 2 electrodes in a capsule filled with a mixture of metal halide salts and argon, producing an extremely bright light. Some advantages of this design are that they produce more light than an incandescent flashlight using the same amount of electricity, and the lamp will last longer and is more shock resistant than a regular incandescent bulb. However, they are much more expensive (due to the need for a ballast and other circuitry to start and operate the lamp) and are usually rather bulky. An example of an HID flashlight is the Surefire Hellfire Weaponlight.

A headlamp is a flashlight worn on the head for hands-free operation. Powerful headlamps mounted on helmets have been used in mining for decades, but general-purpose ones with fabric straps are now also available. Sometimes a light is mounted to a handgun or rifle.

See also Streamlight and SureFire. Most flashlights are cylindrical in design, with the lamp assembly attached to one end. However, early designs came in a variety of shapes. Many resembled lanterns of the day, consisting largely of a box with a handle and the lamp attached to the front. Some others were made to have a similar appearance to candles. It is possible that future developments of battery and LED technology will bring interesting new designs. For instance, one very small light consists of a few LEDs with a switch, designed to be an endcap for a 9-volt battery.

High end lights often go for as much as several hundreds of pounds/euros/dollars. Using metals such as titanium, steel, or even silver, and often being limited in production they often end up as collector's items trading at many times their original sales price. Such flashlights are very advanced, using special batteries, have adjustable brightness levels, waterproof ratings, and are very bright. As a unique example of a high end manufacturer, with non-cylindrical, unique design, Lumencraft was one of the first manufacturer to create designs that cater more towards a higher end design and art-conscious market rather than the tactical military and law enforcement markets.

The most common power source for flashlights is the battery. Many types of batteries are suitable for use in flashlights, such as button cells, alkaline batteries, lithium batteries and rechargeable NiMH and lithium ion batteries. The choice of batteries will depend on the light source used, and will usually play a determining role in the form factor of the flashlight. Some flashlights are solar powered, using the energy generated from a solar cell to charge an on board battery for later use.

Some flashlights have an electrical generator built into them. One type of dynamo-powered flashlight has a winding crank connected to a small alternator that feeds several diode bridges with their outputs connected in parallel feeding a field effect transistor that charges a capacitor that connects to one or more LEDs. Others generate electricity using electromagnetic induction. They use a strong permanent magnet that can freely slide up and down a tube, passing through a coil of wire as it does. Shaking the flashlight will charge a capacitor or a rechargeable battery that supplies a current to a light source, typically a light-emitting diode or, more rarely, an incandescent light bulb. Such flashlights can be useful during an emergency, when batteries may not be available.

The Forever Flashlight uses the Faraday Principle of Electromagnetic Energy to eliminate the need for batteries. The Faraday Principle states that if an electric conductor, like copper wire, is moved through a magnetic field, electric current will be generated and flow into the conductor.

Portable electric lights are a relatively recent invention, but actually older than most people think. Searching in a dark closet before 1896, one had to use a candle or kerosene lantern. Accidents occurred and fires followed. A safer alternative was needed. The first trustworthy lighting device was the flashlight, invented about 1896. Portable electric lights were called flash lights since they would not give a long steady stream of light. The carbon filament bulbs were inefficient and the batteries were weak, allowing the user to flash the light on for only a few seconds, then release the contact. Very early lights did not have an on/off switch, just a ring or tab that would push against a button or band of metal. When batteries and bulbs became more efficient, the switch was improved. As flashlight became popular, flashlight makers began to add decorative elements to the lights.

Since the flashlight could not exist without a battery and a bulb, the history of the flashlight is associated with batteries and bulbs. The first battery appeared in 1866, invented by French inventor, George Leclanche. He called it a single fluid electric generating battery. It was a wet cell, made by filling a glass jar with ammonium chloride, manganese dioxide and zinc and then adding a carbon bar for the positive end of the cell. It was not portable. If tipped over, the acid would spill out. Thomas Edison invented the incandescent bulb in 1879. Improvement to the battery came in 1888, when a German scientist, Dr. Carl Gassner, encased the wet cell chemicals in a sealed zinc container. This was the first dry cell and the first portable battery.

It is 8 inches tall and took 2 D cells which were contained in the upright tube. This early brass flashlight was turned on by screwing down the pointy thing on the top (to use the technical term.) The design and lines of this beauty would fit right in to a 1920s Flash Gordon adventure. Don't move. I am turning on the Protecto-Ray.

The leading name in flashlights was Eveready. Eveready, originally named The American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company was founded by Conrad Hubert. Hubert did not invent the first flashlight. David Misell qualifies as the inventor of the tubular flashlight and the early bicycle light. Conrad Hubert was born Akiba Horowitz on April 15, 1856 in Minsk, Russia. He came to the United States in 1891 and changed his name to Conrad Hubert. A few years later he opened a novelty shop in New York City and probably sold some of the battery powered items made by Birdsall Electric Mfg., an 1896 unsuccessful early maker of battery powered devices. David Misell worked for Birdsall and bought their assets when that company failed. He was an inventor and not a businessman, so in 1897, he went to work for Conrad Hubert. In 1895, a #6 battery was needed to produce useful light. The #6 battery was six inches high and weighed over three pounds. In 1896, the D cell battery was invented and several together could produce the power of the #6 battery in a much smaller size. They provided enough power to make hand held portable light a possibility. One of the early electrical novelties powered by a battery was a simple stick pin with a miniature bulb. Wires connected the bulb to a battery hidden in a pocket or behind a scarf (tie). When the wearer pressed a switch carried in the pocket, the bulb flashed. D batteries powered the scarf pins. The scarf pin was a novelty when introduced, but users discovered practical uses for it, such as reading in dark restaurants or theaters.

About 1897, David Misell patented several flashlights. One was a 3 D cell bicycle light with a wooden battery case. Misell filed the application for the bicycle light patent on October 9, 1897. When the patent was granted on April 26, 1898, it was assigned to Conrad Hubert's company, The American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Co. which later become Eveready.

American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Co. of New York was formed to sell these new battery powered devices. Misell and Hubert assembled a number of tubular flashlights and gave them to New York City policemen in different precincts. As shown in their first catalog, by March, 1898, Hubert began receiving favorable testimonials from the policemen. Testimonials are statements from people extolling the virtues of a certain product. These testimonials were used in the company's literature to promote sales. Hubert was a great salesman and the publicity obtained by the testimonials made the public want to own a flashlight.

On January 21, 1899, Conrad Hubert filed a patent application for a clover-leaf bicycle light (shown near the top of this page). The patent was granted on October 24, 1899. In 1898 Conrad Hubert produced his first catalog. The cover of his second catalog of 1899, showed the world being illuminated with Hubert's flashlight, with the words Let There Be Light. The catalog featured 25 different battery/bulb objects. The brand name of the products was Ever Ready. During the first few years of the company, the name Ever Ready did not appear on their lights. By about 1902 the name was stamped on the endplate of the light.

Above are three variations of the first tubular flashlight - The 1899 Model One Ever Ready ring contact Flashlight. The screw thread model (lower photo) is the second version of the Model One, ca.1900. The top photo shows two first Model One lights. They have a bayonet locking bottom cap and a friction fit top cap. None are marked Ever Ready. There are patent dates on the middle band of each light.

When you think of what a flashlight is, you rarely think of table lights. These three are us. Ever Ready candle lights with a battery in the base. The Lily, the Iron Candle, the O. N.C. Candle and a rare 1902 Reliable Iron Candle . Several early electrical companies made the Iron Candle. Telling them apart is difficult, but there are slight differences, such as switch placement and shape or color of the wooden base that give a clue as to the maker.

In 1906, National Carbon Company, which had supplied Eveready with materials for their batteries, bought a half interest in the company for $200,000. Conrad Hubert remained president and there was little change in the general policies of the company. The name was changed to The American Ever Ready Company and the trade name was shortened to one word, the familiar Eveready. 1906 was also the year of the introduction of the tungsten wire filament to replace carbon filaments in light bulbs. This made bulbs more efficient and brighter than before. Batteries had also improved and new switches began to appear on flashlights that allowed them to stay on for a few minutes. One of these was the Glove Catch switch begun in 1903 and phased out by 1911.

Circa 1905 Vest Pocket Ever Ready flashlights. Note no switch, just a button to flash the light. I named the switch on top the ramp to the button style. Note that the battery was made with a well in it to take the bulb assembly. That idea was short lived.

In 1911 Eveready replaced the push button and glove catch switches with a low profile simple slide switch (so regardless of the date on the bottom plate of the light, any flashlight with a slide switch was made in or after 1911). In 1912 Eveready replaced the low profile switch with a high profile simple slide switch. The new higher profile slide switch was used on both vest pocket and tubular flashlights in 1912. The 1912 switch design was soon replaced by a switch introduced in December, 1912. It combined the slide switch with push button switch. Due to the short production run of only a few years, the earlier switch models are more difficult to find. The switch with the button was used by many flashlight companies.

Flashlight original boxes. If you think it is tough to find early flashlights in good shape, just try to find them with the original boxes. The earliest box shown is the second from the left made about 1913. Daylo boxes date to the period from 1917 to 1921.

In 1917 National Carbon Company merged with Union Carbide to form The Union Carbide and Carbon Co. and Eveready began using the name DAYLO. The logo on the battery cap was changed to read EVEREADY DAYLO. Daylo was never well accepted. The main reason for the non-acceptance was that only Eveready could use Daylo. The public still used the word flashlight and all other flashlight making companies called their products flashlights. The advertising campaign was a success but the name was a dud. The Daylo name was dropped in 1921.

We have unusual and highly prized flashlights available in LED and Krypton bulb formats with light outputs from invisible Ultraviolet (UV) through Visible ranges and up into Infrared (IR) regions.

Most of us have had the annoying experience of the bulb failing in our flashlight, usually at a less than opportune moment. Even when there's a spare handy, changing it can be a challenge in the dark. How appealing would you find a flashlight with a bulb that never burns out, or at least not for tens of thousands of hours? Then there's battery life, or lack thereof. If the bulb isn't failing, the batteries are petering out. The light dims and is extinguished just about the time you need it the most. Changing batteries in the dark, even when you have them, is usually a trial. How appealing would you find a flashlight whose batteries last tens of hours, or even hundreds of hours?

We're talking about flashlights that use LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) instead of conventional incandescent bulbs. Yes, these are the same LEDs you've seen in electronic equipment, digital signs, cheap key ring lights, and the like for years. The problem has been that while LEDs came in an array of colors, they didn't come in white--until very recently. Other colors might suffice to light up a keyhole or to read a chart without diminishing your night vision, but for general practical use they left a good deal to be desired. Some have tried using a mixture of primary colors, with varying effectiveness, but that's not exactly an elegant solution. In the early 1990s Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Chemical (now Nichia America) developed the first viable white LED (Read. about his significant accomplishments in this a related fields as well as a fascinating interview about his battles to develop this and other ground breaking devices in a Scientific American interview). Actually, the term “white LED” is not technically correct. The LED itself generates blue light, but a micro-thin coating fluoresces when struck by the blue light, generating a white light. In part because of this two-stage process, initial examples were pretty dim. They were also very expensive, as with most newly developed technologies. Recently they have been getting brighter and brighter and, if not inexpensive, at least much more affordable. While still far dimmer than other LEDs of comparable size and energy use, they are bright enough to make a white LED flashlight practical, at least for some uses. Brightness is also a function of the beam angle built into the LED's integral reflector. The advent of narrow angle (20 degrees) LEDs has also made a big difference in usability. Not all white LEDs are equal. When they produce LEDs, and especially white LEDs, there is considerable variability among them, both in terms of brightness and the actual color, a problem that was at times very evident in our tests. Like pearls, LEDs are graded and can be matched, in this case for output and color. One fallout from this has been that the brighter and whiter you want them, and the better color matched they are if more than one, the more expensive these LEDs are. That translates to a more expensive end product. In any case, the bluish white color is far different than that from a typical incandescent bulb. No matter what type incandescent it is, there is a yellow cast to the color, to one degree or another. The white LEDs' color is far closer to that of natural sunlight, thus colors are rendered more naturally. However, some find this color “unnatural” since it's so different from what they are used to from a conventional bulb. It can take a while to get comfortable with the color.

We collected all such white LED flashlights we could find for our review. Developments and new entrants into this market are coming so fast, it's difficult to keep up, so inevitably we're going to be a bit behind the power curve for a while. There are numerous single-LED "key chain" style lights available that operate only via a momentary switch, they do not have a constant on mode. We feel that constant on mode operation is an essential element for any flashlight, so we have not reviewed any new lights which do not have this feature. NOTE. If you manufacture or distribute an LED flashlight we haven't covered here, please email us and we'll make arrangements to evaluate your light(s) to add to this review. Some of these lights claim to be waterproof or water-resistant. However, with the exception of one manufacturer's product line, these are not truly waterproof in the same sense as we think of a dive light being waterproof. (Actually, the proper technical term is “submergible” for which there are accepted standards and tests.) For the most part these lights don't claim to be waterproof--if you read the fine print. We tested the lights claiming to be waterproof by submerging them for a few days in four feet of water and all passed that moderate test. Those claiming to be water-resistant, we submerged in the sink for five minutes. All did just fine. We then tested the water resistant lights in the pool as well. Only a few, as noted, continued working. Many of the water resistant lights function even though they were flooded inside and drying them out after getting wet is all that is needed to maintain their usefulness. Failing to do so results in a rusty mess that sooner or later quits functioning. Shock resistance is another advantage claimed for LEDs. We drop tested the flashlights four times from six feet onto concrete with not a single LED failure and little in the way of any other visible damage to the body of the lights themselves. That's an impressive showing. In some instances with tubular design flashlights with multiple AA-cell or larger batteries we had some functional failures. This occurred intermittently and only when dropped squarely on the head or tail. The weight of the batteries combined with the force of impact deformed the positive terminal (the "nipple"), forcing it down into the body of the flashlight. When this occurs, either contact is lost between the batteries or internally there is some sort of damage, either of which can prevent electricity from flowing. This is no different that what can happen with a conventional flashlight of similar design. While some makers claim the LEDs will last upwards of 100,000 hours, others only claim 50,000. Experts tell us that LED life may vary considerably depending upon how they are powered and what voltage is used. Many of these lights are pushing more volts through them than the LEDs were originally designed for in an effort to increase light output. Even so, you should expect the LEDs to last, as we noted above, tens of thousands of hours, even when over-powered to a degree. They can be burned out if too much power is applied, but none of the lights we tested exhibited that problem. Another significant advantage of LED flashlights, as noted above, is that battery life is extended far beyond anything we have come to expect, though in our tests actual results varied from manufacturer's claims, both plus and minus. With no real standards for measuring battery life with this new technology, all claims must be taken with a grain of salt. Moreover, you are rarely comparing apples to apples as light output is also often much less than typical incandescent bulb flashlights. As the battery charge declines below nominal, the LED doesn't go out, it simply gets dimmer. In many cases this residual illumination will last again as long or longer than the nominal light output and the flashlight may still be useable for many chores at these reduced light levels. In many cases battery life overall can be measured in days, not hours. We arbitrarily defined battery life as the point at which light output was noticeably dimmer and full original functionality diminished. Most of these white LED lights have a brief initial period of greater brightness after which the light settles down to a slightly lower level of illumination that will continue for some time. Also, in normal use, where flashlights are generally used intermittently, battery life may be longer because batteries are at their worst when current draw is continuous. On a related note, battery price and availability can be an issue worthy of consideration, depending upon your use and where you reside or plan to travel. Conventional alkaline AAA-, AA-, C-, and D-cell batteries are easy to find almost anywhere and are inexpensive. An unusual size, such as an AAAA-cell alkaline battery or 3.6 volt AA-cell size lithium battery can be very hard to find and expensive to boot, often over $10 each. In the middle range are coin and button cell lithium batteries, often used in watches, hearing aids and similar devices, that are fairly widely available, even in non-specialty stores, and the cost, while not cheap, is not outrageous. Lithium batteries generally offer more power for a comparable package size. This may be greater voltage or longer life or a combination. Lithium batteries also have a much longer shelf life than alkaline batteries, up to 10 years with 90% to 95% capacity, or better, retained. A conservative storage life for undated lithium batteries would be 6 years. Expect only 4 to 5 years from alkaline batteries with a conservative storage life for undated batteries of 2 to 3 years. Lithium batteries also deliver far better cold weather performance. An added benefit is that they are much lighter than alkalines by over one third for a comparable size. For example, an AA-cell lithium weighs in at 14.5g vs. 23g for an AA-cell alkaline. The flashlights we tested ranged from single LED lights to a 24-LED flashlight. Even the brightest won't punch a beam out as far as a bright, well-focused halogen or xenon beam from a conventional incandescent flashlight, regardless of size. That hasn't prevented some from claiming they are “visible for over a mile,” which isn't a false statement, just a bit misleading if you don't read carefully. That someone can see the light a mile away doesn't mean you can illuminate anything a mile away, a different thing altogether. However, for many uses, bright, tightly focused beams are counterproductive and the best of these lights provide excellent quality, diffused light, along with generally exceptionally long battery life and those nearly indestructible bulbs. One flashlight we tested doesn't even require batteries. Size also varied a great deal, from diminutive lights smaller than a quarter using miniature lithium cells to lights the size of a conventional three D-cell flashlight. Smaller lights designed for pocket carry need to be really small to be functional, in our opinion. Few people care for a big bulge in their pocket, it's uncomfortable and unsightly. Larger lights had best provide enough added performance to warrant the extra bulk and weight.

This is very inaccurate, the wind up flashlight sucks horribly because it's not very bright at all, and after having it for a while, the lights get dimmer, and would not help if you really needed some light. If you want a good flashlight, get a Surefire flashlight. They are insanely bright, even if you get their cheapest one, which isn't really that cheap. About $80. (I think Surefire flashlights are flashlights that SWAT use.

Always carry a flashlight into structures, even during daylight hours. Interior rooms may be dark and it will take a while for your eyes to adjust. Also, some rooms like basements might not have lighting.

During encounter-type calls, don't turn the flashlight completely on. Only use the kill-switch option. This way, if you drop the flashlight, it can't give away your position.

If moving in a group, only the first officer should have his flashlight on. Otherwise, you give away your numbers. Also, if officers in the rear are lighting up the officers in front (this is called silhouetting), a perfect target is created for an armed suspect.

(I think Surefire flashlights are flashlights that SWAT use.

However, it was not until the nineteenth century that electricity was harnessed to create light. The modern battery powered flashlight was created in 1898 by Joshua Lionel Cowen, the original owner of the American Eveready Battery Company. Cowen originally developed an idea for a decorative lighting fixture for potted plants. His fixture was composed of a metal tube with a lightbulb and a dry cell battery. Cowen passed his idea to one of his Eveready salespersons, Conrad Hubert, who turned the metal tube, lightbulb, and battery into the world'.s first flashlight and started selling the batteries and the flashlight. In the last hundred years, advances in technology have resulted in flashlights with hundreds of different styles and features. For example, flashlights are now made with rechargeable batteries that can be used multiple times. Other lights are designed for special operations, such as working underwater or in high-temperature conditions.

The most common flashlight design is the simple household light that consists of a tube-like handle that contains the batteries. This handle is affixed to a threaded head assembly that houses the bulb mechanism. These units operate on standard batteries and provide a typical light output. Special designs are required for industrial or professional use. These lights are made from heavier gauge materials, and are more durable. They are also intended to produce a brighter beam of light. Flashlights with brighter beams are used by the police, firefighters, and the military. Camping lanterns are larger units, usually powered by heavy duty batteries. These frequently use fluorescent tubes as their light source because of their greater energy efficiency, however, this type of bulb does not cast as strong or directed a beam of light. Furthermore, the increased size and weight of this type of lantern limits its portability. Novelty flashlights are designed for use by children. These tend to be made of lightweight plastic and are notable for their visual design. The body of the light may be adorned with decorative plastic overlays that increase the child-appeal of the unit. Their designs are often based on favorite characters from popular cartoons or children'.s books. Finally, there are a variety of specialty lights designed for particular uses. For example, snake lights, flexible tubes that can be bent or twisted to provide light in hard to reach places. Others are designed to be small enough to fit on a key chain to illuminate keyholes. Factors to consider when designing flashlights include light output, durability, and the ability to operate in special environments. Battery life is also an important factor, and some lights are designed to be plugged into an electrical outlet to be recharged or to maintain a charge until it is needed. Other lights use special bulbs, like the new generation flashlights built with light-emitting diodes. These are not as bright as conventional incandescent bulbs, but their power consumption is so low that they can last hundreds of hours on a set of conventional batteries, as compared to a few dozen hours for incandescent bulbs.

1 The plastic components used in flashlight construction are typically injection molded using polystyrene and other durable polymers. In this process, plastic pellets are mixed with plasticizing agents and colorants. This mixture is liquefied by heating and then injected into appropriately shaped molds via an injection plunger. The mold is then subjected to high pressure to assure that the molds are completely filled, and to hold the molds together against force of injected liquid plastics. The end closures are also molded, where usually both internal and external threads are molded. Pressures as high as 2,500 tons may be used for high-speed or multiple-cavity production molders.

3 Incandescent bulbs are the most common light source used in flashlights. These consist of a metal filament sealed in a glass bulb. When the filament is exposed to an electric current the resistance of the wire causes it to heat up and emit light in the visible wavelengths. The filament is welded to two wires that pass though holes in a cylindrical glass bead that forms the base of the bulb. This structure is placed in a fixture and a cylindrical glass envelope that is closed at one end is placed over the filament. The open end of the glass envelope rests against the glass bead.

5 The electronic circuitry of a flashlight varies depending on its design. Simple lights rely on an off/on switch to make the connection between the wires connecting the battery terminals to the wires extending from the base of the bulb. This type of switch is most commonly a slide type that moves up or down to make the proper connection. The switch assembly is more complicated in the more sophisticated lights. One United States patent describes a flexible metal strip that is depressed to create a contact between the wires.

Completed flashlights undergo a series of quality control tests to ensure they function properly. First, the bulb must be checked to ensure it is properly aligned with the reflector. if it is misaligned performance may suffer. Second, the switch assembly is evaluated to determine if it makes proper contact with the electrical leads. Third, the seal on the battery compartment must be checked to determine if moisture will not inadvertently enter the battery compartment. This seal must allow venting of gasses that may be formed during battery operation. The bulb itself must meet separate quality standards. Generally, Division 2-approved flashlights are temperature-rated as TI to T6, where Tl is a temperatures less than, or equal to, 842°.F (450°.C) and T6 is less than, or equal to, 185°.F (85°.C). Testing labs used by flashlight manufacturers include Factory Mutual Research Corporation, Underwriters Laboratories, and Demko.

Any flashlight that will be used in a hazardous environment or confined space must be properly tested to ascertain that it meets or exceeds all applicable safety standards for those locations. Hazardous Locations are defined by the National Electric Code and include the following classifications. Class I locations are areas where flammable gases may be present in sufficient quantities to produce explosive or flammable mixtures. Class II locations can be described as hazardous because of the presence of combustible dust. Class III locations contain easily ignitable fibers and filings. Hazardous atmospheres are further defined by ".groups.". These include atmospheres containing acetylene, hydrogen, or gases or vapors of equivalent hazard, such as ethylether vapors, ethylene, cyclo-propane, gasoline, hexane, naptha, benzene, butane, propane, alcohol, acetone, benzol, lacquer solvent vapors, or natural gas. Metal dust, including aluminum, magnesium, and their commercial alloys, may also create hazardous atmospheres. Environments containing carbon black, coal or coke dust, flour, starch, or grain dusts, are classified by the Code. Flashlights designed for use in these environments are individually tested before leaving the factory.

Manufacturers continue to improve upon the design of their flashlights. New models with improved power sources are becoming increasingly popular. For example, the power plant of a new self-powered flashlight is the revolutionary Freeplay Generator, which is a unique and patented mechanism that stores kinetic energy in a carbon steel spring as the user turns a winding handle. This energy is released as electrical energy when the light is turned on, thus powering the light without any other external power source. Other improvements in flashlights include tougher polymers for improved durability and smarter computer technology that will allow automatic shut off mechanisms to conserve battery life. Finally, increasingly sophisticated molding techniques will allow the creation of novelty flashlights in a wider variety of shapes and colors.

The best flashlight is Surefire L2 Digital LumaMax. It's small, rugged, bright, and long-lasting. In this article, I cover the selection of battery and flashlight. I am no expert on batteries and flashlights (not even a hobbyist). What I collected here is a compilation and derivation of data that helped me understand the subject. perhaps it will help you, too. I was just shopping for a light.

Non-rechargeable batteries come in very different availability, with different prices, different capacity, and different sizes. The following table (data comes mostly from theLIGHTsite and a bulk battery dealer, also Candle Power Forums, the LED Museum, and Sean's Flashlight Site) should help make sense of a few common types of batteries.

Lithium Ion Polymer -- a compact (and more than twice as expensive) alternative to Lithium Ion, somewhat lower energy density, immature at this point (commercial start in 1999) Unfortunately, at this time it appears to be impossible to get a flashlight that would use rechargeable Lithium Ion 18650-type cells. Large Lithium Ion batteries conservatively provide about 2Wh/cent over their life time, assuming daily -- or more frequent -- charge cycles (almost three times cheaper than lantern batteries). They are also maintenance-free and have energy density only slightly worse than non-rechargeable alkaline batteries (about 120Wh/kg). Lithium Ion batteries rapidly become very expensive if used infrequently due to their aging properties. NiCd batteries made to fit type D sockets can provide up to 10Wh/cent with regular maintenance. Improperly maintained NiCd would provide approximately 3Wh/cent. NiMH batteries can yield about 2Wh/cent with proper maintenance.

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have very long life (essentially never needing to be replaced), produce light that can appear more white than that of other lamps, have very good lumen/Watt ratio. However, they cannot have very high wattage, and, therefore, even with their good lumen/Watt ratio cannot be made very bright (the new Luxeon 1W LEDs seem to be an exception. they can compete in brightness with a conventional lamp. the coming 5W LEDs may very well obsolete many incandescent lamps). Since they typically have low wattage such as us. mW, LEDs are often combined to produce a flashlight with higher light output. however, this way they cannot be all placed in the focal point of a reflector to produce a beam. Several LEDs make a good flood light, while a single LED makes an excellent key-chain light. Xenon lamps are used in high-end automobile headlights. They produce absolutely the most amount of light for their size, if we are to ignore HIDs. They burn out much faster than LEDs and, of course, use much more power. Conventional and halogen lamps appear inferior to Xenon lamps for serious-beam applications in terms of total output, while they lose badly to LEDs for flood or small light applications. Halogen lamps have better than xenon lumen/Watt ratio, so they might be preferable in a flashlight with only incandescent bulb and no LEDs. They are also cheaper than xenon bulbs. High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps are very expensive (up to $100 per bulb), very fragile (no dropping!), large, and take tens of seconds to come to full output. They produce a lot of light. The main application is stationary lights.

LED lights often come with no reflectors at all. However, all `beam' lights (and most lights in general) are equipped with paraboloid reflectors. Assuming point light source, an ideal manufacture process, and no diffraction, the flashlight with a smooth paraboloid reflector and a lamp in the focal point would emit a perfect beam of parallel rays. Since lamps actually have non-zero size and manufactured paraboloids are not perfect (often, they are simply approximated by spheres to simplify the specification), typical flashlights with smooth reflectors produce rings and dead spots. The rings are unavoidable if the light allows for wide beam setting (moving the lamp out of focus). One can alleviate this problem by introducing facets or minor random imperfections. the beam will be smoother at the expense of throw. A faceted reflector consists of a large number of tiny flat mirrors. A textured reflector has a fine texture. it is also known as a stochastic or an orange peal reflector. Faceted and textured reflectors help produce smooth light out of focus. Textured reflectors work better than faceted (and are harder to make, so they are found in more expensive lights). Some reflectors can be combined, so that the outer part is smooth (resulting in a tight beam with a good throw) while the inner part is textured to reduce rings in wide beam setting.

There is the familiar push-button on/off switch, the cap or bezel twist, and tail-end `tactical switch'. Tactical switch is so known because this is what police officers and other users of flashlights for pistol shooting in the dark use. it works by momentarily turning the light on while the button is pushed in (usually with a thumb). A bright flashlight can, in addition to illuminating the target, temporarily blind or dazzle an opponent. [It should be noted that `serious' types, such as the military, would not use a light for shooting in the dark at all, since night vision equipment is readily available.] The tactical switch is ideal for very bright beam lights. not least because they use a lot of energy and it is convenient to be able to turn them off as soon as they aren't necessary. It is almost always combined with a way to turn the light on and keep it on, often by twisting the tail cap. A growing number of lights come with both an incandescent lamp and one or more LED. These require the selection of a mode for their operation. Unfortunately, the most common way to allow to select one of several modes is to provide a button that cycles through the states. This has the unfortunate consequence that after you're done using a low-level mode and want to turn the light off (perhaps to regain night vision) you have to go through a high-output mode that erases your night vision. A much better user interface would be to provide an on/off switch (perhaps a tactical switch as described above) along with a separate selector of modes.

Flashlights are commonly made of plastic, aluminum, steel, and (synthetic) rubber. Plastics lights (and pure rubber lights) are cheaper than metal ones, but they do not protect the content well and are hard to make even marginally watertight. Steel is unnecessarily heavy. Any light should have an aluminum case with rubber edges for grip, water protection, and cushioning. Rubber cases can be OK for cheaper lights that use inexpensive bulbs/LEDs and have no electronics to protect.

Beam lights to illuminate remote objects. Lights that can be used for more than one purpose are convenient and popular. Traditionally, a combination beam/flood light was implemented as a beam light with a conventional bulb and an adjustable focus. when such light is seriously out-of-focus, the beam is wide (in reality, irregular and unsightly). With the advent of LEDs (which are ideal for flood lights) these combinations are becoming obsolete. Further, flashlights can be portable (those that you intend to carry) and non-portable (for the home, the car, etc.). For non-portable lights, there's no reason not to provide both flood capability with LEDs and a beam capability with a xenon bulb and a smooth reflector in a package that includes a lantern battery (or, more expensively, several type D batteries). Portable lights are trickier. In a portable light, at least the choice of batteries is very clear. lithium type 123A. Nothing small comes close in capacity per gram, and they are only slightly more expensive than AAA or 9v batteries (and much cheaper than AAAA, N, or AA Lithium). Ideally, a portable light should provide a combination of key-chain, flood and beam. If the light has integrated LEDs, the incandescent bulb will not be (ab)used for flood light purposes and will therefore only be used sparingly. therefore, in a LED/incandescent light combination, xenon bulb makes the most sense since it provides highest total light output. The ideal non-portable light.

I'll wait for Luxeon 5W white LEDs. They'll probably cost around $30 retail and have light output of 120 lumens (same output as the HOLA option of Surefire 6P, but larger than xenon bulb, so beam would be wider with less intensity for the same size reflector). but, on the same two 123A cells they'll burn for an hour rather than 20 minutes. Rumor has it that their white version has some 1000-hour problem that should be corrected perhaps in early 2003. Once the LED is available, a number of flashlight manufacturers in likely to take advantage of it. In the meantime, I'll use assorted lights. maybe I'll buy the Princeton Tec 40.

Since the last time I checked, two things happened. the 5W LEDs started to show up in production lights and a new light that pretty much answers my call for a combination light came out. Both innovations are produced by Surefire. Their flashlights are very highly regarded by the experts (of which I am not one). The 5W LEDs did not turn out to be the wonder they were touted to be, but they are still

Good. Their rated life expectancy is 500 to 1000 hours for different versions (so, they may need replacement, but the cost of the LEDs is negligible compared to the cost of batteries). They have better lumen/Watt ratio than xenon bulbs, but the difference is not as great as was expected. But they are shock-proof. Xenon lamps with outputs up to those found in lights up to 6P are essentially obsolete at this point. Surefire A2 Aviator has a xenon bulb plus three standard 5mm LEDs. It has two modes (LEDs only and xenon lamp plus LEDs), regulator, soft-start for the xenon bulb, and is otherwise similar to the E2. $140. Surefire L4 Digital Lumamax (and KL4 bezel for any E series light) has a single 5W LED and blows away any xenon-based E series flashlight in light output (but not in center luminosity) while having very similar power consumption. One intensity level only. Regulator that results in constant light output for about an hour. $140. Surefire L1 with a single 1W LED and a two-stage tail switch is otherwise similar to the L4. $100. All of the above lights take two CR123A cells. What I want now is an L4 variant with two-stage switching mechanism to be able to save battery.

Since nothing major (like a one-element 5-W LED) seemed to be coming out, I bought the Surefire L2 Digital LumaMax flashlight. I can find no fault with it. I'm sure a more miniature version with less light output will be coming out one day.

Geoff says. First of all, hand-held flashlights are out. If you want some bang for your buck, get a headlamp. They don't require you attention, and you can go about life as normal. I use one for rock climbing and to say the least, they work quite well. Check out the Black Diamond Spot headlamp for $39, and I promise you won't regret it. This is very inaccurate, the wind up flashlight sucks horribly because it's not very bright at all, and after having it for a while, the lights get dimmer, and would not help if you really needed some light. If you want a good flashlight, get a Surefire flashlight. They are insanely bright, even if you get their cheapest one, which isn't really that cheap. About $80. (I think Surefire flashlights are flashlights that SWAT use.

Ive been testing the Tri-L LED light by Altus Lumen. I have to admit that this light has become one of my favorite gadgets. The design of the Tri-L shows great attention to detail. The metal housing is made out of 85% recycled magnesium which is lighter than aluminum, so the Tri-L feels solid yet light in your hand. A knife, some rope and a decent flashlight. When it comes right down to it, these are tools that a guy can really use. As for the latter of the three, a good choice may be these new "Daylite" superbright torches from Duracell.
