Some stuffed animals have names that come with the product, while others, such as Zurlain, above, are named by their owners.
A stuffed animal is toy animal sewn from cloth, plush, or other textiles, and stuffed with straw, beans, plastic pellets, cotton, synthetic fibers, or other similar materials. Stuffed animals are also known as plush toys (U. S English) from plush, the outer material used, and soft toys or cuddly toys (British English). They are made in many different forms, some resembling real animals, some in a caricature with emphasis on different features, some in the form of Legendary creatures or Cartoon characters. Some stuffed animals are very old – home made cloth dolls stuffed with straw go back to at least the 1830s, perhaps much older. The most well known type of stuffed toy is likely the teddy bear. They are often used as comfort objects.
Stuffed animals in the past were used for random stuffing of the evacuated skins of hunted animals. The phrase is still sometimes used to refer to examples of taxidermy. However, with modern technology it is now possible to produce them with synthetic materials. For this reason, plush toy or plushie (U. S. English) or soft toy (British English) may be more appropriate names for modern synthetic stuffed animals. The first commercial concern to create stuffed toys is apparently the Steiff company, founded in 1880 in Giengen an der Brenz, Germany. Among the most popular types of classic stuffed animals are teddy bears and sock monkeys.
Stuffed animals are bought for a variety of reasons. Some are bought for display in home or a work place. They can also be given as gifts, such as for graduation, Valentine's Day, birthdays, any kind of special day, or just as an expression of thought.

Unfortunately, every day in America many children are caught in traumatic, emotional, and transitional situations. That's why in 1997 Cammie Sanders, 2002 Ms. Florida US Continental founded Stuffed Animals For Emergencies (SAFE), to give these children a little joy during these troubling times. SAFE volunteers collect new and gently used stuffed animals and toys to be redistributed to Police, Fire & Rescue, Ambulance Services, Children's Homes, Hospitals, Life Flight, and other emergency organizations. These emergency organizations use the stuffed animals to ease the children's nerves and calm their fears. These donations let the children know you care and give them hope in a world that at times seems so very cold. Read more about our founder Cammie Sanders.

N. The art or operation of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of dead animals for exhibition in a lifelike state.
As the demand for quality leather and hides grew, the methods became more and more sophisticated. By the 1700s, almost every small town had a prosperous tannery business. In the 1800s, hunters began bringing their trophies to upholstery shops where the upholsterers would actually sew up the animal skins and stuff them with rags and cotton. The term "stuffing" or a "stuffed animal" evolved from this crude form of taxidermy. Professional taxidermists prefer the term "mounting" to "stuffing". More sophisticated cotton wrapped wire bodies supporting sewn on cured skins soon followed. In France Louis Dufresne, taxidermist at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle from 1793, popularized arsenical soap in an article in Nouveau dictionnaire d'histoire naturelle (1803–1804). This technique enabled the Muséum to build the greatest collection of birds in the world. In the early 20th century, taxidermy began to evolve into its modern form under the leadership of artists such as Carl Akeley, James L. Clark, William T. Hornaday, Coleman Jonas, Fredrick and William Kaempfer, and Leon Pray. These and other taxidermists developed anatomically accurate figures which incorporated every detail in artistically interesting poses, with mounts in realistic settings and poses that were considered more appropriate for the species. This was quite a change from the caricatures that were popularly offered as hunting trophies. Taxidermy saw a burst in popularity in the late 1960's after the past time featured in the short-lived BBC comedy 'Smoking The Hams' (1968) where the main star Dean Chant (played by Mark Coleman) practiced taxidermy in his mothers living-room. Taxidermists seek to continually maintain their skills to ensure attractive, life-like results. Taxidermy specimens can be saved for later use by freezing. The taxidermist then removes the skin, to be tanned and treated for later use. The remaining muscle fibers and bones are measured and posed. The carcass is then molded in plaster. The carcass is then removed and the mold is used to produce a cast of the animal called a mannequin. Mannequins can also be made by sculpting the animal first in clay. There are many companies that produce stock forms in many sizes that can be used. Glass eyes are then usually added to the display, and possibly also artificial teeth, depending on the subject's original dental condition. An increasingly popular trend is to freeze dry the animal. This can be done with reptiles, birds, and small mammals such as cats, large mice and some types of dogs. Freeze drying is expensive and time consuming. The equipment is expensive and requires much upkeep. Large specimens can be required to spend as long as 6 months in the freeze dryer, although it is the preferred technique for pets. Another new trend is the creation of entirely artificial fish mounts from photographs for catch-and-release fishermen. This technique, called reproduction Taxidermy, which is not really Taxidermy at all, is gaining favor with both fishermen and animal-rights organizations.
Rogue taxidermy is the creation of stuffed animals which do not have real, live counterparts, such as the jackalope and the skvader. They may have mythical counterparts (e. g. dragons), be of the taxidermist's imagination, or be endangered or extinct species. They can be made from the supposed parts of mythical animals (e. g. chimeras, griffins, unicorns) or they may be artificially created. Rogue taxidermy is often seen in sideshows and dime museums among genuine freak animals. The term "Rogue Taxidermy" was introduced by the Minneapolis, MN based group, The Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermists (or M. A.R. T.)[1] in October of 2004. It was first coined by M. A.R. T. founders Sarina Brewer, Scott Bibus, and Robert Marbury. The term first appeared in print in a New York Times article about the group's debut exhibition on January 3rd, 2005. [2] Since that time its definition has become more general, referring to many types of taxidermy that do not fall under the trade of it. Art taxidermists such as David Blyth and Polly Morgan use taxidermy to create art either as its sole content or as part of an installation.
Anthropomorphic taxidermy is where stuffed animals are dressed as people or displayed as if engaged in human activities. This style was popular in Victorian and Edwardian times but can still be found today. The style was popularised by Herman Ploucquet, taxidermist in Stuttgart, Germany, when he exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851. The most famous practitioner was English taxidermist Walter Potter. His most famous work includes The Upper Ten or Squirrels’ Club featuring 18 European red squirrels socialising at their 'club', and Death of Cock Robin, a setting of the nursery rhyme. Another important practitioner was Edward Hart, whose The Prize Fight series depicts a boxing match between two red squirrels. A modern anthropomorphic taxidermist is M. Cattelan who in his installation Bidibidobidiboo showed a squirrel that had committed suicide, dead at its kitchen table.
This item. Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads. The Culture and Evolution of Natural History Museumsby Stephen T. Asma
Amazon. com Review Science museums can be illuminating, exciting, and disturbing--just like the collectors that make them possible. Scholar Stephen T. Asma turned his professional curiosity about preserving bodies into an engrossing, wide-ranging exploration of the nature of these places and their curators. Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads. The Culture and Evolution of Natural History Museums brings a refreshing vitality to a subject usually thought boring, if not morbid. Asma's writing ranges from expositive to chatty, and it occasionally feels like a travelogue or memoir, as he investigates the American Museum of Natural History, the Galerie d'anatomie compare, and other collections in the U. S. and Europe. This informality keeps the reader engaged throughout. Referring to the process of skeletonizing specimens--while maintaining his hold on all but the most sensitive--he writes. I stepped into the foulest, most pestiferous stench you can imagine.. Inside each tank were thousands of dermestid beetles, otherwise known as flesh-eating beetles, blissfully chewing the meaty chunks and strands off the bones. Each bug was no bigger than a watermelon seed, but en masse they could strip a skeleton clean in two short days. To Asma's credit, the bulk of the text is less a gross-out fest than a consideration of the hard, sometimes obsessive work of the men and women behind the displays. He examines the role of museums and collectors in the great evolutionary debates of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the future of these institutions as they come more and more to depend on corporate largesse. Equally enlightening and entertaining, Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads is a perfectly exhibited specimen. --Rob Lightner
If you do not want to know the nuts and bolts (or rather, the knives and molds) of the craft of taxidermy, but you want to know about why people might be interested in such an activity, what happens to their exhibits in museums, how museums express cultural and scientific philosophy, and how we come to categorize the biology that fills our world, then Stephen T. Asma's _Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads. The Culture and Evolution of Natural History Museums_ (Oxford University Press) will do nicely. It is an amusing ramble through museums, but since Asma is a professor of philosophy, it veers through much larger ideas. Asma obviously likes museums, and he has gained entrance to the back rooms denied to other mortals. He is delighted to report his findings, such as the dermestid beetle room at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. These beetles, held in a stinky sealed room that has a door like a submarine hatch, swarm over the skinned bodies of specimens, literally gnawing them to the bone in a couple of days. He has interviewed curators and exhibition designers, and has them explain what they are trying to accomplish in their exhibits. But they may not know. how a display is arranged depends on scientific and social philosophy which varies from time to time and from nation to nation, and may be covert. Louis Agassiz displayed human racial artifacts at Harvard to emphasize that races were different, having been separately and specially created, rather than showing the continuity of human descent. The natural history museum in England have exhibits that emphasize Darwin, but the French hardly mention him. The Americans will have the most modern philosophy of taxonomy. Comfortable with including Plato, James, Wittgenstein and others from his own field, Asma gives a wide-ranging discussion of epistemological issues that is academic but is never stuffy and never loses its sense of fun.
Stephen Asthma's Stuffed Animals And Pickled Heads surveys the presence and evolution of natural history museums around the world, interviewing curators, scientists and exhibit designers and providing many observations of the history of these museums and how their contents and approaches have evolved. The result is an excellent and intriguing story of the evolution of natural history collections.

What comes to mind when someone mentions stuffed animals? For most of us words like cute and cuddly or maybe kids and toys come to mind. For these photographers and product designers, however, words like twisted and disturbing or even demented and deranged are perhaps more fitting. Some have explored the innards of these seemingly innocuous childhood toys (more or less literally) while others have had Blair Witch Project experiences with strange, spontaneous and surreal roadside stuffed animal art installations.
Artist Matt Kirkland had always wondered what lie beneath the fuzzy exterior of the worlds cutest stuffed animals - particularly those animated ones that sing, dance, talk or teach. He set out to discover the secrets of some of the most outwardly sweet and snuggly plus toys including Elmo, Pooh, Barney, the Care Bears and other assorted childhood favorites. In some cases the results are what one might expect while in others they are rather shocking. These road kill stuffed animals by RoadKillToys are anything but cuddly and cute. Twitch the raccoon and Grind the rabbit each come complete with a toe tag and body bag. Coming soon in their toy line are Pop the Weasel (a door stopper), Fender the Fox (a bloodied bobble-head toy) and Splodge the hedgehog (as a plush toy or a mouse pad). The site advises customers to collect them all before the maggots set in. Unfortunately these are currently only available for purchase in the UK. The story of these strange impaled teddy bears, photographed by WebUrbanist reader Nic Nichols, is arguably stranger than fiction. His wife spotted one stuck in a tree and when he went back to photograph it he found a total of three. After blogging about the experience a reader informed him that the practice of putting a teddy bear in a tree can be an indicator that a child passed away in that location. When he returned to the location even more teddy bears had appeared. So what had happened? A series of child deaths? As it turns out, a local farmer placed one lost teddy bear he found in a tree in hopes that its owner might find it and in the end other folks passing by took their cue from it and added their own with a strange kind of individual spontaneity.

WASHINGTON, DC–According to a World Wildlife Fund study released Monday, stuffed-animal biodiversity is rapidly rising, with the number of species available in plush form up nearly 800 percent since 1990.
While the number of living species continues to plummet, the exact opposite is true of their toy counterparts," WWF director Ruth Aberg said. "This is particularly true in America, where polyester-fiber-filled replicas of even the most endangered species can be found in glorious abundance." According to the WWF report, 885 animal species are in danger of extinction worldwide, and another 165 are classified as threatened. Of these 1,050 at-risk species, however, an estimated 970 can be found in mass quantities in children's toy boxes and on collectors' shelves. Stuffed-animal biodiversity, Aberg said, has not always been so robust. Ten years ago, the number of species produced by toy manufacturers was "abysmally low," mainly restricted to North American wildlife and a few select jungle animals. The past decade, however, has seen a proliferation of all manner of synthetic fauna. "There are an estimated 41,000 species of vertebrates on Earth, yet until recently, only a small handful were available for purchase–tigers, bears, lions, penguins, giraffes, and perhaps an owl or a duck," Aberg said. "Even then, only the most common species within a particular genus was represented. In the case of bears, for example, you'd have the brown bear, but rarely the polar bear and never the sun bear or sloth bear." Today, by contrast, consumers regularly encounter river otters, hedgehogs, hammerhead sharks, warthogs, capybaras, opossums, tarantulas, and rare caimans found only in remote regions of the Amazon. "Look at sea turtles, a species rapidly disappearing due to pollution and poaching," Aberg said. "Several years ago, EcoToys Inc. introduced Sam The Super Sea Turtle, a green turtle, or Chelonia mydas, complete with a tag describing its natural habitat and status as an endangered species. It was so well-received that the company then introduced Louie The Loggerhead, a large-headed, brownish-red turtle better known as Caretta caretta. That, in turn, was followed up with Lepidochelys kempi, a small, gray Atlantic ridley named Bo Ridley. Store shelves that were once devoid of sea turtles are now teeming with all manner of them."
The rise in stuffed-animal biodiversity, experts say, has been made possible by humans' growing interest in environmental issues. Science-themed toy stores have popped up in malls across the nation. Entire shelves of such retail giants as Toys 'R' Us are devoted to animals from around the world. Beanie Baby manufacturer Ty can barely keep up with consumer demand for plush biodiversity. Wild Republic, a major manufacturer of stuffed animals, produces more than 100 species of animals, including Halima The Snow Leopard, Brunei The Probiscus Monkey, and Adoncia The Poison Dart Frog. Several of the company's more popular species are also available as backpacks. "As rainforests continue to disappear at a rate of one and a half acres every second, I thought there was no hope for the leopard frog," Sierra Club associate director Dianne Wilmot said. "But Wild Republic just announced there will 5,000 more Rana pipiens in existence by Christmas. A walk through the aisles of any toy store reveals what a diverse world we used to live in." While Wilmot is encouraged by the stuffed-animal boom, some see cause for alarm. "The number of species is rising way too quickly," said South Bend, IN, wildlife enthusiast Wendy Elias. "I wanted to get all the animals in the Jack Hanna collection. They're so cute, and I knew I could give them a good home. But they keep introducing new ones faster than I can make shelf space. My husband will absolutely kill me if I bring another one home." Manufacturers, however, do not regard overpopulation as a threat. "We have a plan, should the animals on store shelves become too numerous," said Adrian Rohn, a spokesman for Wild Republic. "We will simply employ a systematic reduction of prices to encourage bargain hunters to thin the herd."

For many years, the original Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Kanga and Eeyore were lovingly cared for by Elliott Graham at the offices of E. P. Dutton in New York. After reading a newspaper article reporting that Dutton had taken possession of the 'stuffed animals,' Elliott applied for and was given a job at the publisher, where he quickly became the official guardian to Pooh and his companions. On September 11th, 1987 the toys found a new home at the Central Children's Room at the Donnel Center, a branch of the New York City Library, where they are on display in a large glass case inside a room with a viewing window. The toys have been left uncleaned an unmended and look as if they are awaiting the return of Christopher Robin.
Sadly Roo is one of the original toys that has not been preserved. His disappearance was described by A. A. Milne in the birth certificate. "Roo is believed to be somewhere in Sussex, but no details are available. A subsequent dog who became part of the establishment, took him for a walk once and left him in a hollow tree, from which he was extracted a year later. But the spirit of adventure was now strong upon him and soon afterwards he was off again, whether or not with the co-operation of the dog this time is not known". Interestingly, Ernest Shepard's beautiful line drawings of Pooh were not inspired by Christopher Robin's bear, but by Growler, the much-loved bear belonging to the artist's son, Graham. Years later, the tired and worn bear lost a fight with a Scottie dog in a Montreal garden, where he had gone to live with Minette, Shepard's granddaughter. If anyone has plans to visit Christopher Milne's stuffed animals in New York, here is the address and hours for viewing. Photo's are allowed for personal use, but no flash photography is permitted. Feb 2005 Do you have a good recommendation for cleaning stuffed animals? Ours are not exactly stained, but are looking rather grimy a few years later and my daughter doesn't seem ready to part with them for some time to come. I'm hoping for an easy-to-get product - something that doesn't have to be mail ordered with extra shipping/handling or minimum order amounts. Heike
I've had great luck just throwing stuffed animals in the washing machine with the sheets and towels. For the ones with parts (like wind-up music) I just wash them by hand with Woolite and am careful not to submerge them. I typically just put them in the dryer too. Haven't had any ruined loved ones yet! Kristen
Both my kids have had stuffed animals that have been loved into horrible, occasionally smelly, condition. We have always put them in a pillowcase, tied it with a twist tie, and tossed it into the washer, then the dryer. (A trick recommended by a store where one was bought.) The loveys have survived many such washings, and have always come out fine and smelling a whole lot better. Leslie
Many stuffed animals can be washed in the washing machine with ordinary detergent and then air dried. Start with the gentle/delicate cycle and cold water and don't mix cotton-covered animals of different colors (in case the dyes run). Make sure the filling can get wet. I wash the polyester-covered-and-filled animals in hot along with any other clothes. David
I threw all my son's stuffed animals in the washing machine, even though every label said not to, and dried them on hot at the laundromat (really hot). The only serious casualty was a lion with a long, soft mane. The mane came out permanently densely ratted. It might have been fine in a home dryer on medium heat. I don't recommend doing what I did (laundromat dryer on hot) but I'd do it again with a home machine, keeping an eye on them, turning it down to medium after awhile. They were all the usual, squishy type, and the ALL had dire warnings against anything more than a damp cloth. Jenny
Oct 2002 Does anyone have any fancy tricks for cleaning well-loved stuffed animals that are surface wash only? I've heard something about cornstarch, but haven't a clue how to go about this. Thanks. Lauren
Re. cleaning ''surface wash only'' stuffed animals. Use the washing machine and dryer. My son spit up a lot. I mean a _lot_. I decided that surface washing just wasn't going to cut it and machine washed all his surface wash only stuffed animals. The ones with the crinkling sounds - like w/ paper inside - no longer crinkled, but the rest were fine. I must say i didn't have or wash any with anything fragile seeming. There are no guarantees, but realize that they might be just fine. Good luck! Sue
I ignored the tags that said ''surface wash only'' and threw all the used stuffed animals that I was given into the washing machine, using warm water and a scoop of Oxy-Clean along with the laundry detergent. Thus far, every stuffed animal I've tried this with has survived and looked almost like new. Diane
Jan 2002 Does anyone know a good way to thoroughly clean stuffed animals and cloth toys that are marked "surface washable only"? My 9-month-old teeths on everything, and I'm trying to find a non-toxic, but fairly thorough way to clean her cloth books, stuffed animals, etc. Thanks! Lianna
If your child hasn't already attached to one specific stuffed animal, try allergycontrol. com. They have stuffed animals designed to be washed in hot water. I have frequently put in "surface washable only" animals in the washer and had no problem, as long as they were well-constructed to start with. meghan
Nov 2001 I have a 30-year-old stuffed animal that I want to pass down to my son, but I'm having a hard time cleaning it. I handwashed it first, but the water turned so brown that I felt I needed to machine wash it, and now I can't get it dry. I started off tumbling it on no heat and then moved on to full blast for almost an hour, but the stuffing still feels heavy like it's wet inside and seems like it's starting to come loose a little. Now, after taking a hair dryer to it and letting it sit out for several days, it smells a little mildew-y. I'd really like this special toy to be played with, not put on a shelf, but I don't want to give it to my baby if it's unsafe. Should I dry clean it? What about the chemicals? If I do need to store it, is there some way to keep it pristine?

Has there ever been a child that didn't love stuffed toys? Very unlikely. small children (and many big children) love soft toys. Stuffed dolls, plush toys and animal toys tickle their skin and make them feel all safe and comfy. New kids' toys come and go every year, but stuffed toys, from tiny animal pillows to big stuffed animal rockers, will never go out of style. Nor will the low, low prices at Overstock. com ever go out of style, especially not while the shipping is only $2.95 per order.
What makes a popular toy? A plush toy is really, really soft. they feel so good against baby's soft skin. An animal pillow recreates the cute baby animals that kids see on TV and love so much. Stuffed rocking horses and other animal rockers allow even very young children to feel like they're really on the move! When night falls, every little kid knows there might be monsters under the bed or in the closet, but they'll feel so much safer with a stuffed animal, or maybe several stuffed animals on guard. animal toys may be warm and cuddly to a kid, but they'll leap off the bed and devour all the monsters, if those monsters ever come out!
Remember, stuffed toys are not just kids' toys. they are grown-up toys as well. Many adults still have stuffed animal toys they received as children. many others collect them as a hobby and trade toys almost like a game. So, when you buy games, hobbies and toys at Overstock. com, you get the lowest prices on the Internet, great customer service and a toy store that's open 24/7. Who could ask for anything more?

When searching for a stuffed animal a good place to start is by deciding what kind of animal to get. Teddy bears are probably the most popular stuffed animal and are available in such a wide assortment that there is likely to be a bear nearly everyone. If a bear is not the animal of choice, there are many categories to try. But first, where did the tradition of stuffed animals and teddy bears come from?
History of Stuffed Animals Stuffed animals, also referred to as plush toys or plushies, had early roots commercially in 1880 with sales of an elephant pincushion from Steiff in Germany. The company expanded the felt animals they carried and in the early 1900s created/invented the teddy bear. Gund stuffed animals were introduced in 1898 when the company was started in Connecticut, and Gund continues to be the top soft toy manufacturer in the US. These soft animals are attached to many snuggly memories and usually elicit a smile from kids of all ages. In the United States this trend became a national obsession, in part to honor President Theodore Teddy Roosevelt. Kinds of Stuffed Animals Today Farm animals and wild animals are basic divisions separating those you find home or at a petting zoo from those in forests, oceans, and exotic zoos. Other animal divisions are those seen only in the imagination, such as the historical and mythical including dinosaurs and dragons. Finally, many popular stuffed animals are whimsical or nonsense designs, which are fanciful made-up creatures. A great example is Ugly Dolls, which are teethy monsters that somehow are still cute enough to cuddle! Designer dolls can be appropriate for all ages, but do include some more mature themes that may be only suitable for older teens and adults. Choose your Interaction Style Interaction is another consideration when choosing the right soft toy. This can be found in the animal in many styles. When certain senses are stimulated that is considered interaction. Some stuffed animals, such as the Audubon Birds from Wild Republic have sound boxes containing the actual call of the animal that sound when squeezed. Others make strange noises or wiggle when dropped. Some grab with magnetic hands or velcro feet, while others have their own virtual world online. Webkinz plush toys are the leader in this area. These popular plush toys come with a code to enter online so that the child can play and learn in a protected online environment. Dont forget about classic puppets! Puppets as interactive plush are limited only by the imagination. They are being used more often as educational toys and are becoming more available with a range from tiny finger puppets appropriate for toddlers to larger puppets the size of a five year-old. When size matters in standard plush as well as puppets, there are miniature stuffed animals all the way to extra large stuffed animals - even life-sized for the right price. Even though interest in puppets peaked with Jim Hensons Muppet Show in the 1980s, puppets are gaining in popularity again. For instance, the musicians They Might Be Giants have moved into puppetry arts to sing their creative and original childrens songs. The Unique Feel of Stuffed Animals Another stimulant in the interaction category is the tactile quality of an item. There are more plush toys available now for small children than ever before and many of these are covered with a variety of fabrics to stimulate the touch sensors. When small children are involved that means there will be lots of chewing on the item so its important to consider wash-ability and the quality of the materials. Dont worry, there are options to go green with organic materials and often avoid allergic reactions as well. This is a sector of childrens toys and stuffed animals that we anticipate will grow immensely in the next ten years. Safety First with Plush Toys No matter what size or shape the stuffed animal, it is important to remember a few safety tips when considering children. Stuffed animals are toys that encourage close interactions, so it is important to take extra care in making sure toys are high-quality, made with non-toxic materials, and securely assembled. Any stuffed toys for children under 3 years should have stitched detail (eyes, mouth, etc) instead of sewn-on bits like buttons that can detach and become a choking hazard. While dolls and toys and blankets are wonderful for playtime, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends for a childs safety that babies be put to bed with no blankets, or fluffy, plush-type items. That means that cuddling up with that blankie or boo-bear will wait until the child develops his own attachment to the item.

Most stuffed animals have a suspicious chemical smell to them, and some are even quite scratchy. These guys from Aurora are made of soy fiber and stuffed not with polyester, but kapok, this fluffy stuff that's soft and hypoallergenic (it's also found in lifejackets--it floats) and it a sustainable rainforest crop, so perhaps it might give some incentive to not just chop/burn the whole place down.

A stuffed animal is toy animal sewn from cloth, plush, or other textiles, and stuffed with straw, beans, plastic pellets, cotton, synthetic fibers, or other similar materials. Stuffed animals are also known as plush toys (U. S English) from the plush outer material used, and soft toys or cuddly toys (British English). They are made in many different forms, some resembling real animals, some in a caricature with emphasis on different features, some in the form of Legendary creatures or
Some stuffed animals are very old – home made cloth dolls stuffed with straw go back to at least the 1830s, perhaps much older.
They can also be given as gifts, such as for graduation, Valentine's Day birthdays, any kind of special day, or just as an expression of thought.

Health Canada and the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission are recalling 41,000 stuffed animals sold by Old Navy stores in Canada and the United States. The dolls have hard button eyes that came off the toys during testing by Health Canada and thus pose a choking hazard for small children. Old Navy voluntarily extended the product recall to include similar toys sold in the U. S. So far, there have been no reported injuries related to the dolls. About 5,400 of the cuddly dolls were sold in Canada in nine different shapes including a rabbit, dog, reindeer, dove, penguin and two unnamed creatures. The toys are identified by a style number that is printed on a white label sewn into the side seam of the toy. Consumers should immediately take the dolls away from children. Old Navy is offering a full refund for the stuffed animals with an addition $5 gift card if the toy is returned prior to July 1. Recall notice Previous Topic | Main | Next Topic

A good example of how essential subtle shading of dialogue is to achewood's humor. Alive stuffed animal, though awkward and grammatically questionable, is much funnier than living stuffed animal, or stuffed animal that's come to life. The caps and lack of puncuation lend a nice quality, too.
Philippe was an alive stuffed animal. Is that an alive stuffed animal? HOLY CHRIST IS THAT AN ALIVE STUFFED ANIMAL
The dynamic of them actually being stuffed animals interacting in a human world is kind of lost later in the strip.
